many of the residents used to have. This model provides the
element of emotional support and a sense of security. It is very
heart-warming to see the caregiver sharing a special relationship
with the resident. I don’t know any other program that has totally
and positively changed the way dementia is treated.”

W
hen my husband
began showing
signs of Alzheimer’s
disease, I was told that
he would have to leave
The Terraces. Where to
go was a devastating
problem. Searching
from Redwood City to
Cupertino, my daughter
and I found long waiting
lists. Eventually one
became available. I am so glad that The Terraces is planning to
build a memory care residence to be available to residents and
the greater community. There is a great need.”

that we have a memory care residence within our
“ItLosis vital
Altos community,” says Frank Verlot, former Los Altos
Mayor and Chair of the Board of Advisors. “For residents as well
as non-resident seniors, The Grove will mean those who need
memory support will no longer have to be transferred away from
their community. The Grove is a sign of hope for those families
desperate to keep their loved ones safe and well-cared for
near home.”

Your donation will make The Grove at The Terraces at Los Altos
ready now and in the future for your loved ones, friends and
neighbors. Help us reach our goal of raising $500,000 from the
local community. The Grove located close to downtown—at the
corner of Pine Lane and Los Altos Avenue—will be completed
and ready for occupancy in mid-2013.
P
ilgrim Haven first offered residential care for seniors in the Los Altos
community in 1949. In 2010 it was renamed The Terraces at Los
Altos to signal the beginning of its redevelopment and expansion into
memory care. The Grove is a vital part of the new campus because it
offers the first state-of-the-art memory support residence located in the
Los Altos/Los Altos Hills community. The Grove emphasizes support for
each individual resident within a secure, dignified, home-like environment that encourages life in the moment. The overarching promise is
that no one will be alone with dementia. The program provides a country
kitchen, easy-to-follow floor cues and memory boxes for each resident
to help them identify their personal spaces, comfortable home-like
suites surrounded by secure landscaped gardens and walkways. Daily
activities are customized to each resident’s interests.
No longer will Los Altos/Los Altos Hills residents have to look outside of
the area for exceptional 24/7 care of loved ones. And spouses won’t be
separated from their life partners.
“I
want to see my wife
every day (preferably
twice a day), but the required
car trip has become tiring
over the last four years. We
were married nine years
ago, but half the time has
been living separated lives
because of her need for care
for Alzheimer’s disease.
I really enjoy the limited
time we have together, holding hands, seeing her smiles and laughter,
and reminiscing about our children and grandchildren from our earlier
marriages. I’ve always thought how great a comfort it would be to have
her nearer to me in the remaining time we have together.”
