2015 Annual Report
LOVE OF HUMANKIND Fiscal Year 2015 ANNUAL REPORT translated Philanthropy: A Greek term which directly means “love of humankind.” —BusinessDictionary.com Kids Co.’s mission is to provide and advocate for quality childcare that enriches and nurtures all children, supporting their success in school and in life. “Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindess in giving creates love.” ~ Lao Tzu, philosopher DEAR FRIENDS, Twenty-five years ago we opened our first center—Kid Co. at Adams—wide eyed and ready for new adventures. If we had known what Kids Co. would become, what it would invite into people’s lives, we never would have believed it. Kids Co. has grown from a single center with a handful of kids to 12 (yes, 12!) centers that annually provide a home-away-from-home for over 1,700. We made it this far because of the support of you, our Kids Co. Family, which includes kids, parents, guardians, board members, friends, and one heck of an amazing staff. Words cannot truly express the depth of gratitude we have for you. For over a quarter of a century Kids Co. has had the honor to help raise thousands of Seattle’s kids and for that privilege we are eternally grateful. We take this time now to express our heartfelt thanks. WE SAY TO YOU: > Thank you for trusting us—all of us—with your wonderful children FISCAL YEAR 2015 > Thank you for your smiles and your kind words Kids Co. Board of Directors > Thank you for helping us grow Shawn Larsen-Bright, Chair John Hoverson, Vice-Chair and Treasurer Lauren Offenbecher, Secretary Susan Brown, Ex-Officio John Bridge Henry Chou Tinamarie Feil Joe Jornadal Ray Luiggi Erin Overbey Lyla Ross Jonathan Siegel At Kids Co. we show our love for humankind, philanthropy, daily through kindness and care. This includes warm hellos, letters of gratitude, sharing of stories, family events at our centers, and getting to know you on a personal level. Within the next few pages we are sharing highlights of our 25th Anniversary, a glimpse of our financials, a thank you to our donors, and lots of pictures. Let us know what you think. With much appreciation and awe, FISCAL YEAR 2016 Kids Co. Board of Directors John Hoverson, Chair Erin Overbey, Vice-Chair Jonathan Siegel, Treasurer Lauren Offenbecher, Secretary Susan Brown, Ex-Officio Henry Chou Tinamarie Feil Joe Jornadal Shawn Larsen-Bright Ray Luiggi Susan R. Brown, President and CEO, 1989-present Shawn Larsen-Bright, Board Chair, 2012-2015 Kids Co.’s 25th Birthday Bash!! HOLY COW, ZEBRA, GIRAFFE, AND OPOSSUM— WE SURE KNOW HOW TO KICK-OFF A 25TH ANNIVERSARY! OCTOBER 4, 2014 Kids Co. hosted an Extraordinary 25th Birthday Bash at the Zoo, and it was a great day. Over 500 of Kids Co.’s best friends and families joined us in celebration. The day was filled with fun for all: * bouncy houses * photo booth * games & activities * kid-centric auction * amazing food (including a French fry bar) * and a special guest appearance by an opossum 2 | Kids Co. Annual Report FY’ 15 Kids Co.’s 25th Anniversary A REUNION OF FRIENDS What a night to remember—200 special guests and fabulous volunteers came together on May 30, 2015 at the Foundry in SODO, put on their best attire and most beautiful smiles, and helped us celebrate Kids Co.’s 25th Anniversary. Although the night was enhanced with activities galore (gourmet meal, dessert dash, a Ben Bridge mystery game to win diamonds, silent and live auctions, and an art bidding frenzy), the best part of the evening was seeing old friends, meeting new, and having a truly magical time. Oh—and we raised $91,000 for the Kids Co. Scholarship Fund to boot! A special shout out to our event sponsors who helped underwrite the event: PATRON OF PLAY – FAN CLUB PATRON OF PLAY – FRIENDS A REUNION OF Friends 1989–2014 Kids Co. Annual Report FY’ 15 | 3 GET ON THE BUS Mission: Fieldtrip Wheels | August 17–19 Special thanks to our sponsors: At Kids Co. we make fieldtrips a top priority for our kids year-round. Our challenge is the high cost of transportation—about $500 for each bus rental. We had a solution to this problem and our donors beckoned to our call! Get On The Bus was an online giving campaign with one goal in mind: raise the necessary dollars for chartered buses. This allowed us fieldtrip variety, safe door-to-door delivery, reduced travel time, and a whole lot of fun! Our 232 donors, as well as matching gift sponsors, helped us raise $20,618 to rent over 41 buses. Annual Report FY’ 15 { Thank you to everyone for making our 25th year incredibly special. You make it possible for Kids Co. to do what we do best— create safe spaces that inspire wonder, curiosity, and play for kids. { Kids Co. Annual Report FY’ 15 | 5 After 25 years in the child care industry we’ve made some VERY DEAR FRIENDS who have helped us grow, funded our programs, and had our back at every move. This year we paid special homage to three amazing individuals and a company that cannot be beat! Jon Bridge Best Board Member Ever Bobbe and Jon Bridge Husband, father, grandfather, philanthropist, and friend—words that only touch the surface of the many things Jon Bridge is to his family and our community. At Kids Co. Jon is dad to a former Kids Co. kid, Becky, and most notably, he is a member of the Kids Co. Board of Directors. For as long as Jon has been part of Kids Co. he has always answered our call for help. Jon has consistently, without fail, given his time, talent, and his treasure. He has shown all of us how to be a good citizen of the world. Here’s to Kids Co.’s Best Board Member Ever. Jim Brown Best Volunteer Ever Jim Brown and his dad, Paul For 25 years, Jim has literally done anything and everything he’s been asked to do for Kids Co. Being married to Susan Brown, Kids Co.’s CEO, for the past 27+ years likely provided the right incentive! Jim spent weekends and evenings building benches for seating and shelves for the toys when Kids Co. couldn’t afford to purchase classroom furniture. Jim believed in Kids Co. from the very start. He was determined to make sure Kids Co. opened its first location at Adams Elementary for the first day of school in September 1989. Jim has been carpenter, painter, landscaper, all around go-to-guy, and donor to Kids Co. for 25 years. That’s why he is Kids Co.’s Best Volunteer Ever. Char Davies Best Friend Ever Char Davies and his longtime friend, Kids Co. President & CEO, Susan Brown From the moment they met, and to this very day, Char has been friend and mentor to Kids Co. and Susan Brown, CEO. As a startup nonprofit organization, there are so many “to do’s” with so few hands to do them. Meeting Char meant having very capable hands to help Kids Co. build a strong financial systems footing. Char was Kids Co.’s first accountant and he set up Kids Co.’s original chart of accounts 25 years ago. In all these years, Char has held Kids Co. to the highest of standards. His confidence in Kids Co., and his belief in our work, serve as inspiration for us to be and do better. Char tells you what you need to hear, easy or hard—that’s the mark of a true and trusted friend. Thanks for being Kids Co.’s Best Friend Ever. Dorsey & Whitney, LLP Best Corporate Partner Ever The Dorsey & Whitney Reunion Table: Having a great time 6 | Kids Co. Annual Report FY’ 15 Giving back and service to the community have been core values of Dorsey & Whitney for over 100 years, going back to its founders. The privilege of service and giving lives well in the attorneys and staff at Dorsey & Whitney today. Kids Co. has been blessed with the kindness and philanthropic support of Dorsey & Whitney for seven years and counting. From July 2014, through June 2015, Dorsey & Whitney chose Kids Co. to be their charity partner of the year. From making grass caterpillars, to collecting books for our kids, to hosting a story telling program in their offices, Dorsey & Whitney has been the Best Corporate Partner Ever. Thank You! We clap our hands and thank our lucky stars for the generous support we receive at Kids Co.
