It is the sincere hope of the Italian Festival Organizing Committee that you enjoy your time at this year’s Italian Festival. We have worked tirelessely

Dal Vice Console Onorario d’Italia
La componente italiana di Sudbury è importante non solo numericamente ma anche per quanto ha contribuito alla società
in cui viviamo. I primi italiani giunsero a Sudbury sul finire dell’Ottocento per lavorare nelle miniere. E da allora i canadesi
di origine italiana si distinsero in vari tipi di attività nella nostra città. Imprenditori, professionisti, abilissimi artigiani e
periti nel mondo dell’edilizia, uomini di politica, e via discorrendo. Insomma, riscontriamo la presenza italo-canadese in
tutti i settori della nostra vita civile. L’onestà, la serietà, la dedizione alla famiglia e agli amici, la grande voglia di lavorare
e di studiare, l’inventiva: queste sono le caratteristiche che fanno onore ai canadesi di famiglia itaiana. Ma va inoltre
sostenuto che il contributo degli italiani e degli italo-canadesi è apprezzato dalle Autorità e da tutta la popolazione di
questa regione. È doveroso porgere i nostri più sentiti auguri e le nostre congratulazioni agli organizzatori di questo

On behalf of Council and all citizens of Greater Sudbury, I would like to offer celebratory greetings and best wishes on the
44th Italian Festival hosted by the Societa Caruso in Greater Sudbury.
Over the last 44 years, thanks to our strong Italian heritage, the Italian Festival has evolved into one of the largest of its
kind in Ontario. It’s a great cultural celebration that brings the community together at the Caruso Club to enjoy the
traditional music and excellent cuisine of the Italian culture. Greater Sudbury prides itself on its diversity and vibrant
multiculturalism. It’s important that we share our cultural heritage with the young people in our community in order to
sustain the very best of what we have to offer, our people and our culture. I commend the Societa Caruso and all of the
partners, sponsors and volunteers for their work in ensuring this much anticipated annual gathering is a success.

On behalf of the Società Caruso Board of Directors, I would like to welcome you to the 44th Annual Italian Festival. The
Caruso has a tradition and a mandate to promote and celebrate the Italian Culture within our cultural mosaic and the
Italian Festival works towards these goals. The Festival serves as the largest event the Società hosts throughout the year
and combines the efforts of all the sub-committees of the Board.
This weekend would not be possible without the countless volunteers who return each year to help with the festival. John
Cimino and the staff of the Società are also an important part of the weekend, and I would like to extend my sincere
gratitude for participating with us throughout the weekend. To the Festival Committee, your countless hours of organizing will ensure that this Festival Weekend will be as memorable as years past.
I invite you to enjoy and experience our events; both new and old throughout the weekend. Spend the weekend being
Italian, as we welcome you to what many in the community see as their second home. Where they have come as children,

Life at the Società Caruso
Since its inception in 1947, the Società Caruso has created a feeling of community and family for the Italian citizens of Greater
Sudbury and Northern Ontario. The Società’s objectibes include the promotion, enhancement and preservation of the Italian culture
and heritage within the Canadian Multicultural Mosaic. As a non-profit organization, the achievement of these goals is accomplished
through the work of the Board of Directors and their Sub-Committees.

Message from the Società Caruso Ladies Auxiliary President
The Italian community is known for its great food, but we have more than that to share. At the festival we invite you into
our home to share good food, good wine and most importantly our heritage and customs at the Pesca and the bocce
courts. Throughout the entire weekend, you will hear our favourite music played by many Italian artists. You will also see
a broad spectrum of Italian talent at the Festival of Stars variety show. Our heritage is one to be celebrated and on this
occasion we are proud to share this celebration with all of our neighbours and friends. I hope you enjoy this weekend and
take time to learn more about our “famiglia”. On behalf of the Società Caruso Ladies Auxiliary, I would like to welcome you
to our 44th Italian Festival.

As one of the most active groups within the Società, the Ladies’ Auxiliary continues to be a huge supporter of all things Italian.
Founded in 1948, the aim of the Auxiliary is to work in conjunction with the Società to promote the Italian Heritage within the
community. Members can always be found volunteering at Caruso events including the Children’s Christmas Party, Canada Day at
the Sudbury Arena, The Italian Festival and whenever a committee needs a helping hand.

CULTURE AND EDUCATION
Cultura ed Istruzione
The Culture and Education Committee, whose members
include the Affliated Italian Associations, the Coro
Caruso, the Incontri Italian Club of Laurentian University,
and the Società Caruso Ladies Auxiliary, is one of the
most active committees of the Società.
A longstanding tradition of the Società, the Coro
Caruso performs within the community throughout
the year and is directed by Victor Comisso and
accompanied by Lina Sanchioni. The Coro continues to
perform Italian melodies, but when they are not filling
our hearts with music they are filling our stomachs, as
an army of volunteers making homemade pasta,
gnocchi, and crostoli. They also host the Castagnata
during the Christmas season and are staples at the
Italian Festival each year.
The Coro di Bambini also showcases some of the
youngest members of the Società. Their enthusiastic
rendition of “Mambo Italiano” is always a crowd
pleaser at events and gives children the opportunity to
participate and get introduced to the Società.

The Culture and Education Committee is responsible for two major events during the year at the
Società, the Festa della Donna and the Festa della Repubblica.
La Festa Della Donna
La Festa della Donna was held on Friday March 4th 2016
this year to celebrate International Women’s Day. The
event, in its fourth year, commemorated the international
celebration and was served by the men of the Società
Caruso. The event featured guest speaker Sandra
Mior-Gazdic, President of the Ladies Auxiliary, who spoke
of the influence that her Italian Heirtage has had on her life.
Also recognized that evening were “Most Experienced” and
the youngest attendees.
Proceeds from the evening’s raffle was dedicated to the
youth Italian classes being held in the fall at the Società.
La Festa Della Repubblica
La Festa della Repubblica was organized by the Culture and
Education Committee with the Associazione Nazionale
Alpini. The annual celebration commemorates the creation
of the Republic of Italy with the June 2nd referendum to
end the monarchy in Italy following the Second World War
in 1946. The festivities began with a wreath laying
ceremony at the monoument dedicated to the Alpini at the
entrance to the Società followed by a mass celebration in
the Heritage Hall.

Student and youth

The Student and Youth Committee actively works towards attracting
younger members to the Società. The committee is involved with not
only events at the Italian Festival, but also independent events
throughout the year.
This year the Committee organized a successful ball hockey
tournament and attempted to reviatlize an old tradition of a weekend
youth dance which was called the “Red, White, Green Dance”.

MEMBERSHIP
The Società Caruso is an association owned by its members, which means that being a member boasts many priveleges.
Membership is not exclusive to Italians and there are multiple categories that have evolved as the Società expanded to include
women, families, younger members, and students.
The Anniversary Banquet
The Annual Anniversary Banquet, held in November celebrates the incorporation of the Società in 1947. At this banquet, the Membership Committee announces the recipient of the Joe Fabbro Volunteer of the Year Award and also honours the 50-Year Life Members of the Società.
At the 69th Annual Anniversary Banquet held on November 27th, six members recieved recognition of being 50-Year Life Members:
Leo Cossetto, Enio DeMattia, Francesco DiLisio, Luciano Giusto, Gino Rovinelli, and Benito Signoretti. At this event John Cimino,
Manager of the Società Caruso, was recognized for his 30 dedicated years of service at the Società, and Daniel Melchior was
presented with the Joe Fabbro Award for his exceeding volunteerism and dedication to the Società.
The Membership Banquet
The Annual Memebership Banquet brings together hundreds of
members in the Sala da Vinci for an evening of great food and
entertainment. During this event 25-Year Life Members are
honoured. At the 69th Membership Banquet, six Caruso
members were honoured as 25-Year Life Members: Michael
Fabilli, Giorgio Menegon, Giovanni Rocca, Natale Rocca,
Franco Sacchetto, and Phil Taus.

Wrestling
In its 7th year at the Italian Festival, Live Pro Wrestling
serves as the unofficial opening of the Festival
weekend on Thursday Night. Organized by Mark
Bartolucci, the proceeds of the event are donated in
support of a local cause each year. This year’s proceeds
are going to the Sudbury Playground Hockey League
and tickets are sold for $15.00.
The main event of the evening will feature Tyler
Tirva returning to the Società to defend his
Canadian Heavyweight Title against Jake O’Reilly.
Other matches include Cody Deaner, Tornado,
Rosemary, and KC Spinelli.
FRIDAY, July 8th 2016
Official Opening
The Coro Caruso, as well as, the proclamation of Italian Week by
the City of Greater Sudbury holds the Official Opening of the
Italian Festival on the Friday afternoon with the singing of the
Canadian and Italian National Anthems, and speeches by invited
guests. As the official kickoff, it is held on the steps of the building
and is followed by the opening of the Regions of Italy Food Fair,
Pesca, the Outdoor Tent, and Barbecue.
Food Fair
Introduced in 1997 by Bernice Manoni as the “Italian Traditions
“Vivande Tradizionali” Food Fair”, the Società Caruso Italian
Festival has hosted the Regions of Italy Food Fair for the past 19
years. WIth the grateful participation of the Associazione
Regionale Marchigiana, Calabria Social Club, Fogolar Furlan Club,
Associazione Veneto, and the Società Caruso, the Regions of Italy
Food Fair offers the opportunity to showcase the cuisines that
make each region so very unique. As one of the most attended
events during the Festival, the Regions of Italy Food Fair never
disappoints. Located in the Sala da Vinci the Food Fair remains the
mouthwatering preface to the annual Società Caruso Youth
Contest.

Head over to the Coat Check for Pesca (Fish Pond), the annual
event that keeps you coming back for more. “In order to win one
of the special prizes, the person drawing a ticket must select the
corresponding number that was assigned to the prize. Hundreds
of consolation prizes will keep the children entertained and cause
them to try again and again ... while you (the parents) are doing
likewise, make sure you visit this unique game of chance

44° FESTIVAL ITALIANO
Annual Youth Contest
Annually, the Società Caruso Youth Contest is a highlight for the Festival as it showcases
the talents and aspirations of the youth and future of the Caruso. The event recognizes the
Società Caruso representatives for the year, and will award titles of Congeniality,
Community Leader, Mr. Caruso, Little Miss Caruso, Mr. Teen Caruso, and Ms. Caruso.
Beginning in 1948, and commencing again in 1964, the youth representatives of the
Società Caruso take active roles in attending and volunteering at our events throughout
the year. The expansion of the contest has served to include males and younger children to
the event. This year’s contest, coordinated by Romina Calisi and Daniel Melchior, will be
held Friday evening in the Sala da Vinci.

Outdoor Tent
The Outdoor BBQ opens on Friday evening and is open throughout the weekend. Hot porchetta
sandwiches, meatball sandwiches, and sausages will be served along with pizza outside. Our local
artists and bands, Filippo Mazza and Nolan Pyott (5:00 pm) and The Suicide Drifters (8:00 pm), will be
providing musical entertainment for those who wish to enjoy the weather.
Foosball Tournament
The Foosball Tournament, now in its 4th year, is
organized by the Student and Youth Committee.
The event, held in the Members’ Lounge is now
held on Friday evening and has an entry fee of
$30 per team of two.

Società Caruso - World Cup Futsal Tournament
During the 43rd Italian Festival, the Futsal Tournament
played in the parking lot behind the Outdoor Tent was a
major success. Because of this success, the Società has
brought it back bigger and better than before, teaming up
with local partners and organizers to keep that
competition alive ... especially during this Euro Cup
season.
Outdoor Tent
Entertainment in the Outdoor Tent will consist of young local
performers. The Incontri Italian Club of Laurentian University, a youth
group who takes an active role in the Società, sponsors most of the
day. They will also joke with the crowd, play games and contest, and
making sure everyone is happy.
In the evening performers Justin James (5:00 pm) and Ace & the Cobras (8:00 pm) will make sure the crowd
is well taken care of as others are inside being entertained by Y.E.S. Theatre.

YES Theatre
Saturday night, in the Sala da Vinci, Sudbury’s YES Theatre Company will be performing
medley of songs from past performances and a compilation of Italian songs. As long time
performers at the Italian Festival this is the first time they will be showcased as an
individual performance.
YES Theatre is a company that looks to bring to the stage pieces of theatre that have the
potential to inspire their audiences. They focus on telling stories that their artist can
connect to. Choosing pieces with the intention to spark creative conversation for new
generation of theatregoers (yestheatre.com). The company was formed by Alessandro
Constantini who is no stranger to the Caruso stage, and was Mr. Caruso in 2004.
YES Theatre will be presenting their very much anticipated production of Hairspray
starting in August.
Italian Festival Dance
The evening will end with the return of the Saturday Night Dance in the Sala da Vinci. The Festival Committee was pleasantly
surprised by the popularity of last years dance, after it was returned from hiatus.
SUNDAY, JULY 10th 2016
Mass
As a longstanding tradition an Italian Mass will be celebrated with Fr. Daniele Muscolino in the Sala da Vinci at 11:00 am.
Charity Car Wash in Support of Sam Bruno PET Scan & Rally for Dads (Prostate Cancer) with Dr. Clean
Between 12:00pm and 6:00pm, various charity carwash events will be taking place around the Caruso for guest to get
their vehicles cleaned as they enjoy the Festival
Outdoor Tent
Sunday entertainment in the Outdoor Tent will consist of loyal Società
musicians Lina Sanchioni and Silvio Ferucci with a medley of traditional
Italian classics sung by the Coro Caruso.
Later in the afternoon and evening, young local performers such as Todd
James (5:00pm), sponsored by Tony V’s Pizza and Restaurant.
Entertainment will continue into the evening as the Società officially
closes the 44th Italian Festival.
FESTIVAL OF STARS
Held annually in the Sala da Vinci, the Festival of Stars Variety Show, showcases the talents of young Italians in the
community. The event started in 1997 by Bernice Manoni and has been the stepping-stone for many Italian youth
within the community as a way to gain valuable stage experience and confidence being in front of a large audience.
