Preparations underway as first competitors announced
T
he first seven teams have
been accepted to compete
at IMRC 2016 – Canada,
another 10 are on the waiting list,
and another dozen have contacted
organizers indicating their intent to
register.
“We are on target for the number
of desired teams,” to attend the
10th International Mines Rescue
Competition August 19-16 this year
in Sudbury, Canada, says Alex Gryska,
IMRC 2016 – Canada Planning
Coordinator.
Mine rescue teams from around the
globe will meet this year in the largest
international competition ever, hosted
by Workplace Safety North and Ontario
Mine Rescue, and sponsored by major
companies in the Canadian mining
industry.
Approximately 30 teams representing
20 nations are expected to compete in
different events including a simulated
emergency scenario, firefighting, first
aid, and more.
A current list of teams that have
been accepted to the competition or
placed on the waiting list is available at
IMRC2016.ca. The list will be updated
as applications are reviewed. The
criteria to select teams is also available
on the competition website.
In addition to the 16 teams
representing five countries that have
applied, more than 80 mine rescuers
from six countries have applied to be
judges at the competition, while more
than 30 people have applied to be
volunteers at the event.
Organizers are now contacting
successful applicants to be judges.

Here come the IMRC 2016 judges
W
ould-be judges for IMRC 2016 – Canada are receiving
their confirmations.
Event organizers are contacting the applicants to confirm
their interest and ability to attend the 10th International
Mines Rescue Competition, the first to invite judges
from around the world, says Ted Hanley, Ontario Mine
Rescue General Manager and a member of the organizing
committee.
Approximately two-thirds of the more than 80 applicants
to be judges are from Ontario – many of them current
Ontario Mine Rescue volunteers – and 20 per cent of the
applicants are from outside Canada, while another 10 per
cent are Canadians living outside of Ontario.
International judges will be fully integrated into IMRC
2016, says Hanley. They will be represented in each of the
competition events, as well as each of the underground
activities. No event or activity will be judged solely by judges
from Canada or Ontario, he says.
An information package outlining each judge’s specific
event; the head judge responsible for their event; the
personal protective equipment they require; IMRC 2016
itinerary for judges; and hotel information; will follow after
their attendance is confirmed.
“We would like all judges to be in Sudbury from August
19 to 27,” said Hanley. “If they arrive August 19, they can
attend a meet and greet event on August 20, and orientation
for judges on August 21.”
Judges must attend the orientation. During the
competition, judges will also be required to stay at a hotel
designated for judges only, and to refrain from socializing
with competition teams.
There is no registration fee for judges, though judges must
pay their own travel, food and accommodation costs. IMRC
2016 will provide transportation to and from the Sudbury
Airport and the hotel, local transportation to and from IMRC
events, and admission to the opening and closing ceremonies.
IMRC 2016 is still accepting applications from qualified
individuals from outside Canada. Applicants must have
a working proficiency in written and spoken English,
experience in mine rescue, and be physically fit. Full criteria
for judges and an online application form are available at
IMRC2016.ca.
