Event organizers are contacting the applicants to confirm their interest and ability to attend the 10th International Mines Rescue Competition, the first to invite judges from around the world, says Ted Hanley, Ontario Mine Rescue General Manager and a member of the organizing committee. Approximately two-thirds of the more than 80 applicants to be judges are from Ontario – many of them current Ontario Mine Rescue volunteers – and 20 per cent of the applicants are from outside Canada, while another 10 per cent are Canadians living outside of Ontario. International judges will be fully integrated into IMRC 2016, says Hanley. They will be represented in each of the competition events, as well as each of the underground activities. No event or activity will be judged solely by judges from Canada or Ontario, he says. An information package outlining each judge’s specific event; the head judge responsible for their event; the personal protective equipment they require; IMRC 2016 itinerary for judges; and hotel information; will follow after their attendance is confirmed. “We would like all judges to be in Sudbury from August 19 to 27,” said Hanley. “If they arrive August 19, they can attend a meet and greet event on August 20, and orientation for judges on August 21.” Judges must attend the orientation. During the competition, judges will also be required to stay at a hotel designated for judges only, and to refrain from socializing with competition teams. There is no registration fee for judges, though judges must pay their own travel, food and accommodation costs. IMRC 2016 will provide transportation to and from the Sudbury Airport and the hotel, local transportation to and from IMRC events, and admission to the opening and closing ceremonies. IMRC 2016 is still accepting applications from qualified individuals from outside Canada. Applicants must have a working proficiency in written and spoken English, experience in mine rescue, and be physically fit.
