2009 - Family Service Agency of Marin
ANNUAL REPORT 2009 Family Service Agency OF MARIN A Lifeline for Marin Families With a little help… Dreams can come true (See page one for story) Message from FSA Executive Director Margaret R. Hallett Tim Porter Photography Junitta Green (pictured on cover with her daughter) inspired a packed house at our recent Breakfast of Champions. Junitta came to FSA pregnant with her fourth child and newly separated from her husband. Faced with raising four children alone, she felt lost and depressed. But she was determined that her children be well cared for, healthy and loved. Junitta worked hard with her FSA Parent Aide and therapist. In spite of her own learning disability, Junitta secured a job at a private elementary school so her daughters could attend. She also helped her son earn a scholarship to Howard University, the first person in her family to go to college. Thanks to FSA’s Holiday Family-to-Family Fund, Junitta was able to attend her son’s graduation this year. Meanwhile, Junitta herself is now enrolled as a nursing student at College of Marin. What remarkable achievements by a brave and courageous family! Dreams can come true. Thanks to your ongoing support, FSA’s dedicated staff and volunteers are able to help families like Junitta’s embrace their strengths, pursue new goals, and turn their lives around. Success stories like Junitta’s keep me motivated and determined to surmount FSA’s fiscal challenges, which have resulted from the economic recession and state budget crisis. With the exception of the incredible generosity of our donors and community supporters, all other public and private revenues have declined. To deal with these financial realities, we’ve increased efficiencies, implemented a planned restructuring, and made reductions in personnel and other expenses. Unfortunately, the needs of the most vulnerable are increasing at the same time that our resources are shrinking. However, we continue to focus our Junitta with daughters and efforts on providing a critical safety net for thousands of high-risk children, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, First adults and families. Lady of San Francisco, at the Breakfast of Champions I extend my deepest gratitude to each of you who give so selflessly and generously to support FSA and the community during these challenging times. Warm Regards, 2 A Mother’s Road Home…. T he year Marika entered middle school in Mill Valley her mother fell ill and died from cancer. Marika turned to drugs for comfort. A full-blown addiction took hold by her late teens. She managed to remain sober long enough marry and give birth to two beautiful sons. She and her husband moved to Colorado to begin a new life. When that didn’t work out her drug use escalated. Marika Dessle with sons Johan-Axel and Tomas-Magnus She left her husband and moved back to Marin, desperate to get sober for her sons. She entered drug treatment and temporarily sent the boys to her husband’s family in Colorado. Even though Marika successfully completed treatment and stayed sober for over a year, her husband’s family fought for custody. Marika eventually regained custody of her sons, but when they came home the boys were out of control, refusing to comply with even simple requests and often ransacking the house in fits of anger. Marika came to FSA’s Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) program for help. Within weeks, she felt more confident and in control. The boys settled down, blooming under their mother’s calmer discipline techniques and loving, enthusiastic praise. “Through my work with my therapist, I now feel great as a parent,” Marika said. “My boys and I are not in a power struggle anymore. Our home is finally more peaceful and loving.” WHAT IS PARENT CHILD INTERACTION THERAPY (PCIT)? PCIT is a research-proven child abuse prevention model from UC Davis. It addresses problem behaviors in children 2-8 years of age such as hitting, biting, swearing and inappropriate aggression. Using a one-way mirror and a tiny electronic hearing device for the parent, therapists coach parents in effective discipline and behavior management skills, and how to give positive attention that improves the quality of their parent-child relationship. Extensive studies have shown that the child’s improved behavior is sustained over time and the skills parents learn generalize to other children in the family. 3 Highlights - 2008-09 Thanks To Your Support... LAST YEAR FSA community programs helped enrich the lives of more than 6,000 at-risk children, adults, and families – FSA’s 90 staff and 200 volunteers provided outreach and crucial, often life-saving services through our offices in Novato, Terra Linda, the San Rafael Canal, and Sausalito-Marin City; home visiting and parent mentorship; counseling onsite at elementary schools; and our 24-hour suicide prevention and crisis hotline. BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS RECOGNIZES COMMUNITY SERVICE Last spring 200 guests joined FSA at Dominican University to honor First Lady of San Francisco, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and others. Alana Shigekane distributed information about FSA’s 65th Anniversary Gala DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, held September 2009 Event sponsor, Bank of Marin, was represented by Elizabeth Kulavic and Joan Capurro Honoree Jennifer Siebel Newsom talks to guests Pedro, a mariachi and former client, was so inspired by his experience at FSA that he and his wife launched a music group to teach guitar to boys who wouldn’t otherwise have access to music lessons. Pedro was presented with guitars for his students. Many thanks to Dominican University, Bon Appetit Catering, photography by © 2009 Lila Sparks-Daniels, and all who made the breakfast a success, including guests who donated more than $12,000 toward a $50,000 Challenge Grant announced at the event! 4 Highlights - 2008-09 FSA Honored For Excellence By Statewide Association Last spring, the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) honored FSA as the recipient of their 2009 School and Agency Award at its 45th Annual Conference. This recognition reflects the outstanding training, supervision and staff development program at FSA. CAMFT presenter with Diane Suffridge, Ph.D., FSA Clinical Director FSA Expands Training In Cutting-Edge Child Trauma Treatment In order to ensure child victims have the best possible opportunity to heal in the aftermath of violence and to continue to enhance the efficacy of our services, FSA staff participated in a year-long training program at UCSF’s Childhood Trauma Institute. The program teaches evidence-based treatment methods from Don’t Hit My Mommy, a book by Alicia Lieberman and Patricia Horn, acclaimed experts in childhood trauma. FSA and The Marin Independent Journal Celebrate Beth Ashley Upon Her Retirement FSA’s Marianne Gabelman, Beth Ashley, and IJ Publisher Matt Wilson at luncheon Nearly 300 guests joined in honoring Beth Ashley this summer, not only for her decades of service as a Marin IJ writer, but also for her numerous contributions to the vibrancy of Marin County. The luncheon, sponsored by the IJ as a fundraiser for FSA - in combination with the newly-launched Beth Ashley Scholarship Fund for Families - raised $25,000. All proceeds will be used to fund mental health services for at-risk children and families who could not otherwise afford help. Even though Beth has retired from the IJ, she remains an active FSA board member. Beth’s friends take the stage to sing her praises…. I stayed because I thought that even if he didn’t love me, he would love his son. But he threw us out. We ended up in a shelter. I became very depressed. I couldn’t stop crying. Eventually the shelter referred me to FSA. My therapist sees me individually and with my child. She helps me understand what happened and how to handle it. More importantly, she helps me to take better care of my son. She even arranged for FSA’s developmental specialist to evaluate him. Now that I know my baby is OK I feel better about myself. I so appreciate getting this care and finally have a feeling of hope for the future.” PROMOTE SAFER, HEALTHIER CHILDREN ADULTS n FAMILY n COMMUNITY FSA Outcome Data reveals majority of clients become more productive, resilient, self-sufficient, and are better able to achieve success in school, work, and relationships E ven in beautiful Marin County, hundreds of economically disadvantaged families have limited access to resources and problems often go untreated. Family violence and conflict affect healthy growth and development of children and can lead to repeated cycles of abuse and trauma. Children who struggle with abuse, learning disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder, loss and abandonment, often withdraw, can have poor academic and social skills, and begin a downward spiral. JEANNETTE PRANDI CHILDREN’S CENTER Educated 200 teens and adults about Internet safety. Interviewed 40 child victims of physical and sexual abuse. Comprehensive child interviews in collaboration with law enforcement, district attorney, social services and mental health professionals to aid in prosecution of perpetrators. YOUTH AND ADULT COUNSELING Enhanced the health and well-being of 325 adolescents, adults and 490 family members Research-proven treatment groups; individual, couple and family therapy and support; culturally competent and bilingual services. TeenScreen V olunteer Jessica Heige s 8 SAFER, HEALTHIER YOUTH n ADULTS n FAMILY n COMMUNITY FSA Outcome Data reveals majority of clients become more productive, resilient, self-sufficient, and are better able to achieve success in school, work, and relationships W orking poor, low and moderate income individuals struggling with depression, mental illness, anxiety, relationship conflicts, family violence, addiction, and marital discord often cannot access needed and affordable services. Marin’s rate of suicide is higher than the national goal set by U.S. Healthy People 2010, with an increasing number of young people who attempt suicide and sometimes succeed. The greatest numbers of suicides are among older white males, Marin’s fast growing population FSA TAKES ACTION SERVICES 2008-09 I began therapy at FSA for acute alcohol dependency. I was ashamed and despondent, believing I would never recover from this terrible disease. My FSA therapist never gave up on me. She not only worked tirelessly in therapy sessions, but with phone calls, doctors, hospitals, and rehab clinics. Now I have been sober for 10 months. I would never have achieved this without my therapist. I owe my life to her. She exemplifies what an entire agency should and can achieve. PSYCHIATRIC SERVICES Assessed and treated the medical needs of 175 adults with mental disorders and 263 family members High quality, accessible and affordable psychiatric evaluation and follow-up. FSA is the lead agency in the Marin Alliance for Psychiatric Services, a collaboration with Marin’s largest mental health providers. – A retired Marin teacher AGESONG GROUPS FOR ELDERS Enriched the lives of 46 older adults Discussion groups for men and women 65 years and older to discover and share genuine concerns and desires, and enliven the search for deeper joy and satisfaction in life. AgeSong facilitators meet regularly for discussion and training 9 FSA Legacy Fund for Families Help to ensure vulnerable children and families get the support they need to be safe, and to grow and thrive. Remember Marin Families In Your Will Legacy Circle Members Britt & Steve Thal I feel privileged to have served on boards and volunteered with Marin non-profit organizations for nearly 30 years. My wife Britt and I recognize the vital importance of these organizations for the health of our community. We believe that FSA is a premier agency, not only in its award-winning leadership and scope of services, but in the dedication of its 200 extraordinary volunteers. Many of these volunteers work in areas of particular interest to our family, including suicide prevention and helping women and children who have been the victims of domestic violence. Without the hard work of FSA’s team, too many lives of Marin children and adults would be lost or destroyed. Britt and I have made a commitment to continue our support of FSA’s life-saving services through a planned gift. It is gratifying to invest in our community’s future, even as our ability to give annually has been effected by the economic downturn. It is our true hope that, with accumulated contributions from caring individuals, FSA can build an endowment so the agency’s work can continue well into the future. With this wish in mind, we’ve decided to augment our annual gift with a planned gift that will continue beyond our lives. – Steve Thal IT’S NOT THAT HARD… Most donors think of planned giving as daunting, an area of giving best left to the wealthy. As custodians of our community’s future, however, all donors can play a satisfying role in making planned gifts, leaving the technicalities to specialists. Planned giving is simply a financial strategy for making a major gift. Think of the good… Family Service Agency of Marin could do if every supporter made a planned gift! For confidential information on the tax and income benefits of planned giving, call Marianne Gabelman at 491-5705. 10 Volunteer Of The Year VICTORIA HEIGES For her extraordinary effort on behalf of at-risk Marin County Teenagers Thanks to Victoria’s passionate advocacy of teens and their wellbeing, FSA was able to offer a voluntary mental health check-up called TeenScreen to high school sophomores in Marin County last winter. TeenScreen was developed by Columbia University to raise awareness of the stresses teens face; prevent teen suicide; and to promote their mental wellness and ability to thrive. Victoria dedicated untold hours assisting the agency in managing TeenScreen and coordinating all activities at the school sites. It was a daunting project and an enormous achievement. As a result of Victoria’s tireless efforts, the lives of teens throughout Marin have been enriched, and some quite possibly saved. Thank you, Victoria, this program could not have happened without you! Spirit Of The Family Award Marin Independent Journal For its dedication to improving the lives of Marin children, adults, and families The Marin Independent Journal has been the county’s community newspaper for almost 150 years, and has worked from its beginnings to improve and strengthen the lives of all Marin residents and institutions. The IJ leadership has steadfastly maintained its commitment to delivering local news and supporting all that’s positive in the community, including the work of communitybased organizations. The newspaper has a long history of grant-making, marketing and giving broad public exposure to the needs of Marin’s residents and services that help to promote the wellbeing of our community. FSA honors this commitment and recognizes the newspaper’s positive impact on the lives of our children, adults and families, and the community as a whole. We extend our appreciation to Matthew Wilson, president and publisher, Doug Bunnell, executive editor, Brad Breithaupt, opinion page editor and Dianne Provenzano, manager sales and marketing. 11 Saluting Our 200 Remarkable Volunteers!
