‘Fragile Balance’ at Kent Farndale Gallery Fragile Balance, the 11-member Visual Poetry Group’s art exhibition, opens March 31 at the Kent Farndale Gallery in Port Perry, where it will run until May 3. The group will carry the Fragile Balance theme to Toronto and then Peterborough adding new works. This thought-provoking show featuring abstract works in acrylic on canvas, explores worldwide concerns about climate change and the environment through the personal visions and techniques unique to each of the group’s 11 members, ranging in age from 50 to 80. In the words of group member Eugenie Fernandes, “Visual poetry is to art what poetry is to literature. This show is not just visual. There’s a larger message to communicate and that’s to get Cali Tanner - Miss Teen Canada Globe Teen Queen will challenge world Continued from page 7 the Oshawa Animal Hospital, volunteered at the Oshawa Zoo and recently became a spokesperson for the Durham Region Humane Society. Cali is also an accomplished athlete who enjoys figure skating, snowboarding and hockey. She’s an assistant captain and member of the Clarington girl’s hockey team. But it’s her modelling and pageant career that is foremost in her mind these days. She’s already been asked to ‘sign up’ with one of Canada’s top modelling agencies, but Cali declined the offer until she’s completed her work as Miss Teen Canada. While very excited about the possibility of a career in modelling, she says that will have to wait. She feels her obligations as Miss Teen Canada are the most important thing at this time, realizing at 16 years of age she has plenty of time ahead. Next for Cali is a trip down-under to Australia where she’ll compete against 50 young women from around the world in the Miss Teen World Pageant on April 29th. Cali leaves on April 18 with Michelle Weswaldi, her present manager and trainer. Ms. Weswaldi describes Cali as an energetic and vibrant young woman. “She has lots of energy and drive. When she puts her mind to something, there is nothing stopping her.” She goes on to say that Cali possesses great leadership qualities and is a very caring person. “She especially loves animals, children and her family, with whom she’s very close.” When not competing or attending functions as Miss Teen Canada, Cali spends time at home with her parents Kevin and Terri Tanner and brother Blake. Two weeks from now, Cali will be winging her way to the biggest challenge of her young life. Whether she comes back with the ‘World’ title or not, she’ll still be a winner in the eyes of those who are most important in her life. Go get ‘em Cali. You’re already a winner! By J. That’s what this show is about.” Together for more than four years, after taking an abstract art course led by Alice Teichert called Visual Poetry, they eventually formed their group, moving outside the class setting. “The group’s positive energy is what keeps it together,” says Eugenie, adding; “now we get together once a month to critique each other’s work.” The members come from diverse art-linked backgrounds (chilWaterfall by Kellie McDonell dren’s book illustration, teaching, dance, advertising and drama).
