Co-Chairmen’s Message For 40 years the European Union Youth Orchestra has represented and embodied the highest ideals of European cultural unity and cooperation. As Europe has grown and expanded its membership, so has the Orchestra. In its ranks, at its desks, young musicians from 28 nations between the ages of 16 and 26 work, play, learn, make music, make friendships, gain understanding, grow as musicians and as people. Which nation they come from only partly relevant, for they are united by a sense of a shared cultural heritage, a common cultural vision. Each season they start as 120 individuals; by the end Contents Co-Chairmen’s Message 1 Welcome Message 3 Milestones 4 Tributes 6 Thanks 8 they are an orchestra, that magical blending of brilliant individual skills and distinct personalities into a harmonious whole. Just like the European ideal itself. When the European Union Youth Orchestra The Future 10 and in reality. It is the finest, most vivid ambassador for a vision. Over 40 years, Conductors 16 Soloists 18 The Orchestra 22 Awards 30 Tutors 33 Honorary Patrons / Committees 36 performs, it is the expression of the European dream in practice several thousand musicians have colonised Europe’s music making. Many people the ranks of the greatest orchestras of the continent. Others teach, innovate, explore, inspire. They never forget what they learned with their fellow colleagues from the EU’s 28 countries. All of this nearly came to an end earlier this year when we announced that in the absence of continued core funding from the EU we would have to cease operations. The resulting outburst of support for the EUYO internationally was astounding and the EU has now undertaken to sustain the orchestra both in the short and the long term. We hope that in practice this will enable the continuation of the Orchestra. The scale of respect, affection and trust shown to Partners, Supporters and Friends 38 Governance 40 the Orchestra at this time by the world of the arts was more than could have been anticipated and places on us a responsibility to Sir John Tusa Ian Stoutzker CBE Trustee, Co-Chair Orchestra Board Chair, Trustee, Co-Chair EUYO > CO - CH A I RM E N’ S M E SSAG E Photo © Geoff Wilson continue to justify the confidence of the EUYO’s many supporters. 1 Congratulations! At Askonas Holt, we guide the careers of world-class conductors, instrumentalists and singers, and arrange tours for a prestigious list of international orchestras, dance and opera companies. We are thrilled to be working closely with the EUYO on its remarkable Capital Sounds project. www.askonasholt.co.uk PHOTO © JACQUI J. SZE Making TOURS Happen Welcome Message Monday 8 March and Thursday 22 April 1976 were seemingly unremarkable days. Yet when the cultural history of the EU comes to be written they could enter the history books, for these were, respectively, the dates when the European Parliament passed a unanimous resolution to found the European Community (now Union) Youth Orchestra and when the European Commission confirmed its official Patronage of the Orchestra. The scale of achievement of the EUYO in the ensuing years is articulated in the following pages by tributes from a number of the world’s great artists, politicians and – surely most profoundly – the players themselves. By any measure, the EUYO has combined performance excellence with a unique cultural ambassadorship for the EU, acting as an emblem for the European spirit of freedom, co-operation and creativity, in Europe and around the globe. To celebrate this tradition, the Orchestra is launching ‘Capital Sounds’, an ambitious project to visit all the EU Capital Cities in the coming years with performances that reflect not only the pan-European nature of the Orchestra, but also focus on the cultural identities of each country. The Project launches in Bratislava on 7 August in celebration of Slovakia’s EU Presidency, and continues this summer to Amsterdam, Berlin, Ljubljana and Warsaw. Amidst celebration however, it is impossible not to mention the crisis in EU funding for the EUYO earlier this year that nearly caused its closure, a reminder that even the most impressive achievements are eternally at risk if they are not properly safeguarded. We hope very much that a solution to the Orchestra’s funding from the EU can be found, for as I write discussions are ongoing but not yet resolved. Should they be resolved, then a question is worth posing: as the world changes, increasingly complex, progressively more connected, how can the EUYO best be of service, developing its role as a tangible beacon of the EU’s finest ideals during such an undeniably testing time for Europe? For now, though, we welcome you to our summer 2016 anniversary tour. Marshall Marcus EUYO > WE LCOM E Chief Executive, European Union Youth Orchestra 3 Milestones From Amsterdam to Abu Dhabi, New York to Nicosia, Moscow to Mumbai, Seoul to São Paolo and beyond, the EUYO has performed so far in 4 Continents, 43 countries, 177 cities and 224 venues, including cities in all 28 EU Member States. This prize gave me the opportunity to continue my studies EUYO > AWA RDS in Zürich, a very important goal in my life. 30 I would like to thank all tutors, staff and colleagues for all the teachings, sharing and the help that make me a better musician and a better human being.” The Aleksandar Pavlović Award The Lionel Bryer Memorial Fund Award Set up in 2008 with a generous donation from the Created in 2011, the Lionel Bryer Memorial Fund Award, is Orchestra’s Co-founders Lionel and Joy Bryer, the award designed to support a young musician who has demonstrated is a tribute to Aleksandar Pavlović, the long-standing huge musical talent and potential, but whose development and former Artistic Director of the International Youth and career would benefit greatly from financial assistance. Nikolaj Vestmar Henriques Recipient of The Aleksandar Pavlović Award “One of the most unique things I discovered through playing with the EUYO is that there are so many ways to play well. Even though we are from different countries and are taught differently, we can all learn from each other. It gives you the opportunity to be the musician that you want to be. No one expects you to play a certain way, they expect to hear YOU play, and I find the orchestra very unique in that way. This enables us all to grow as musicians within the Orchestra. I feel extremely lucky and very grateful to be chosen to receive this award. Many people who have been awarded this prize before, are people that I admire personally and professionally. It motivates me to continue to pour all my energy and soul into my work on the bassoon. I'll use the money that I've received for a complete overhaul of my instrument.” Victor Koch Jensen Danish, Trumpet Recipient of The Lionel Bryer Memorial Fund Award “Receiving the Lionel Bryer Memorial Fund Award marks an absolute highlight of my time with the EUYO. To be awarded this special prize is a tremendously generous financial boost, that gives me the possibility to go for lessons as well as auditions abroad. Looking back on my time with the Orchestra, I can't believe how many extraordinary friends I have met, how many epic and tear-provoking concerts we've played, and how strong the bonds we have tied in doing so. The EUYO creates a vital stepping stone for young musicians like myself, and I simply cannot imagine where I would have been without it, not just as a musician, but also as a human being. Mr. & Mrs. Bryer started something truly unique when they founded this orchestra, and I'm extremely grateful that I got to be a part of it.” EUYO > AWA RDS Danish, Bassoon 31 European Union Youth Orchestra Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester Orchestra Haydn Orchester European Union Baroque Orchestra Matthias Pintscher Katia & Marielle Labèque Philippe Jordan Vasily Petrenko Jordi Savall Leo McFall Christian Gerhaher Bernard Haitink Grigory Sokolov Thomas Demenga Nicholas Angelich www.bolzanofestivalbozen.it INFO & TICKETS Bolzano Festival Bozen c/o Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition Foundation Piazza Domenicani, 25 I – 39100 Bolzano · T +39 0471 976568 · info@bolzanofestivalbozen.it ORCHESTRAS MUSIC & YOUTH GUSTAV MAHLER ACADEMY 61ST F.
