I spend as much time as possible in my Florida home during the winter. I don’t like the cold. I don't like the snow. And although I love Pennsylvania dearly, I don't like to be in the north until I'm sure that spring has definitely sprung. I'll be back north at the end of April, when I can walk down to the river and hear a hundred different birds greeting the sunrise with a chorus of delight. This is when I can watch butterflies circling down in the wind until they touch my hands and pass on their greetings. I love flowers, and when I walk around the local lakes and rivers after paddling, Current Paddler 1 I take great joy in seeing yellow and purple flowers sticking their heads through the ground to soak up the warm sunshine. These are always complimented by the red, green, pink, and white of the trees eagerly bursting in growth. Cool and gentle breezes kiss my face and fill the air with sweet smells. Spring is such a glorious time. It is a time of rebirth, new beginnings, and fresh starts. It is a time of growth, a time of beauty, and most of all a time of life. Being out there on the water helps to stir the life and joy within me as well. Spring paddling awakens my spirit, warms my heart, enlightens my mind, energizes my body, and uplifts my soul. The fresh start that occurs in spring is always especially meaningful to me because April is the anniversary of my breast cancer diagnosis, this year will be 14 years that I'm breast cancer free! I hope that the spring of this year adds a spring to your paddling too. I hope that the new life bursting forth along our waterways awakens you to the endless life in your own soul and that all the new growth and new beginnings around you help you to choose new beginnings in joy in your own life. The PACK race series is back. Join us. Your participation is valued and appreciated. Thank you for renewing your PACK membership. I am glad you are a part of PACK. We want to hear from you. Our members are the life and soul of PACK. Come forward and flow into spring with our renewed, full of life, PACK organization. Vice President’s Message SPRING RAMBLINGS Bob Snook So it is spring, if only according to the calendar. Not what I would call great paddling weather, unless you're one of the winter Florida residents, or one of those crazy people in the Warren area. I know those people are hardy, but.....( kidding guys-don't take offense, please ). Hope your off-season has been good, and you got some form of cross-training in the bag if not underway. Cross country skiing was not great in this part of Pa, so for me it's been a bunch of boring inside stuff. To date, minimal paddling, about 10 hours total, so I better get in gear. 2013 should be an interesting year for PACK. Some new officers, race series continues, and to my knowledge most all Pa races are a go. Look for more details in this publication. Keep the faith, the weather will improve, the sun will shine, and life will again be good. ( How about that line? And I'm stone sober at 3pm!) Seeya on the water soon. BobSnook, PACK Vice Prez Train hard. Paddle hard. Race hard. But most importantly, live well. Have a happy Spring, see you at the races. Current Paddler 4 2014 USCA National Championships http://lhnationals.com The location of the 2014 United States Canoe Association National Championships will be held in Lock Haven. This will be the third USCA nationals to be held in Lock Haven, PA. Prior Nationals were held in 1987 and 1998 with Norm Ludwig as race chairman. A proposal submitted by Jeff Rankinen, Amy Rankinen and Norm Ludwig of the Tiadaghton Elm Canoe and Kayak Classic Committee, was approved at the USCA Winter meeting in January. The course selected for the marathon races is an 11-mile loop course beginning with an upstream start at Lock Haven at the boat launch area. A turn-around buoy will be located at Farrandsville. A 500 meter sprint course will be located near the Jay Street Bridge. The Jay Street Bridge, walkway and a riverfront amphitheater allow ample spectator viewing of the race start and finish. Farrandsville Road provides viewing of the marathon loop course. The loop course contains a variety of water conditions and will offer challenges for all abilities. A 100 yard stretch of Class I/II rapids at Queen’s Run will be easily managed by experienced paddlers. An opportunity to pre-run this course will be available by participating in the PACK State Championship to be scheduled in July of 2014. The 2014 USCA Nationals will also correspond to the 50th year of the Tiadaghton Elm Canoe and Kayak Classic.
