A Word
From Our Director
The 2011-2012 school year is
quickly coming to a close as the
Career and Technical Education
Department keeps a clear focus
on the mission of preparing
Grand Prairie ISD students to
be College and Career Ready.
We have continued to focus our
curriculum on relevant industry
experiences by providing our students
the opportunity to participate in
internship experiences in each
pathway. The Internship is designed to
give the senior level students practical
application in the program of study
of their chosen career field. Students
leave the internship experience with
industry standard skills.
The CTE Department is also in the
process of evaluating the types and
the number of certifications students
receive as a part of their program
of study. The Advisory Board will
be working closely with our CTE
instructors as to what certifications
they look for in entry level employees.
We will be meeting with CTE
Instructors to set goals to increase the
number of certifications students earn
and how this approach will change
what is taught in the CTE Classroom.
Several of our business partners have
visited CTE Classrooms across the
district to provide feedback about the
programs that we offer. Their insight
and experience is crucial in ensuring
that we stay on the cutting edge of
Career and Technical Education. We
are looking forward to their continued
support and feedback.
We are looking forward to a very
active spring as we have students
competing across the state for an
opportunity to represent GPISD in
National Competitions. The CTE
Instructors are working diligently to
prepare our students to be the most
outstanding students across the
United States.

How CTE Education is
making a difference!
Expanding Competition!
Grand Prairie High School Center for Law and
Public Safety takes on a new challenge this year
as they compete in mock trial competitions.
The Center for Law and Public Safety at Grand
Prairie High School is an outstanding program of
choice in GPISD. Two attorneys and a group of
core content teachers work with approximately
100 students preparing them for careers in Law
Enforcement. Students have had the opportunity
this year to hear from area legal experts, tour police
facilities and participate in mock trials. Next year,
the students will be moving into a renovated wing
at GPHS specifically designed to promote this
outstanding program. We are looking forward to
job shadowing and internship opportunities for our
students during the 2012-2013 school year
Through scholarships, internships, certification and CTSO membership,
CTE students are given assistance to take education to the next step through
outstanding scholarship opportunities.
Baylor Medical Center at Irving,
Texas Trust Credit Union in
Grand Prairie, Soroptimist
International of Grand Prairie and
Methodist Dallas Medical Center
have partnered with our CTE
Department creating scholarship
opportunities for graduating
GPISD seniors this year.
For the first time in GPISD,
we will be offering scholarship
opportunities specifically
for CTE students. We have
established 8 scholarships for
the 2011-2012 school year
totaling close to $15,000.
Students have applyed for
these scholarships through the
GPISD Education Foundation.
Selections for scholarship
recipients occurred during April.
The Advisory Board will award
the scholarships to each student
and parent at our Scholarship
Breakfast on May 10, 2012.
Students are also able to apply for
additional scholarships through their
CTSO and through NTHS (National
Technical Honor Society). Students
receiving certifications through
their pathway are showing business
partners their commitment. This
has been opening the door for more
scholarship opportunities as we go
forward.

The ICDC is the highlight of the DECA year.
Fourteen thousand high school students,
advisors, businesspersons and alumni gather
for several days of DECA excitement.
Most participants at ICDC compete in one
of DECA’s competitive events. The top
competitors in each event are recognized for
their outstanding achievements.
In addition to the competitive events,
many students and advisors participate in a
variety of leadership and career advancing
academies. Jennifer and Kevin have been
chosen to represent Dubiski Career High
School at just such an academy: The Senior
Management Institute.
The Business Professionals of
America chapter at Dubiski has

TAFE District Results
First Students to represent GPISD in
TAFE Student Organization
History was made February 12th – 14th
when senior Courtney Lynch, junior
Jessica Medrano of Grand Prairie High
and senior Banosha Chualan of South
Grand Prairie High were the first Grand
Prairie ISD students to represent the
district at the state conference of the
Texas Association of Future Educators
(TAFE - pronounced taffy) the newest
Career and Technical Student Organization. Courtney Lynch advanced to state
with her gold win, while Jessica Medrano
and Banosha Chualan advanced with their
silver place in the Education Leadership
Fundamental Contest at the Region X
TAFE Conference in November.
They currently have the record of 64 students
competing on the regional level, 36 students that
traveled to Dallas to compete on the state level,
and a wonderful total of 18 students traveling to
Chicago next week to compete on the National
level. They have been choosen for Leadership
Academy, Internships and Torch Awards. To add
to these accomplishments, they are also one of
the seven schools nationally selected to be in
the running for a $10,000 competition, called
Act Out Loud, to encourage safe teen driving
throughout the United States. It is this chapter’s
third year in operation and they have more than
surpassed our expectations. Congratulations!

Engineering Program Creates
Rocket Science of 6,000 - 10,000ft. These students have to
Advance Engineering
Design is the 3rd level of
the Engineering pathway
sequence of study.
These students participate in the Systems
Go curriculum which involves rocket design. The students in this program learn the
physics involved with rocketry design. They
construct threesmall rockets throughout the
course. They improve on their rockets by
understanding stability, integrity, and design.
The students build an understanding for center
of pressure and center of mass and how it
improves the rocket’s stability. The students
also use a simulation rocket design software
called Rocksims. They can replicate their
actual rocket in Rocksims and it calculates
their desired outcome. Then from Rocksims
they can build to scale using raw materials and
fabricating their wings with balsa wood. The
3 small rockets reach altitudes of 600ft. As
a culmination project, selected students will
build a 10ft rocket utilizing all of the knowledge and resources they used for the previous
small rockets. These rockets reach altitudes
calculate the design of their nose, air frame,
recovery, and propulsion. They must meet the
problem of getting their rocket to reach 1 mile
(5280ft.) while carrying a payload of 1 pound.
The Senior Practicum is the last level of the
Engineering pathway sequence of study.
These students prepared a presentation to
propose a rocket design for a Transonic (speed
of sound) rocket that they will construct. They
presented their proposals to Lockheed Martin’s
Quality Progam Managers. These rockets will
not only break the sound barrier but also reach
heights of 13,000ft.
Both of these rockets will be launched in the
Fredericksburg rocket launch on May 5th.
Dubiski Automotive Blazes a Trail
Through the newly created partnership with
the Grand Prairie Chamber of Commerce
& Workforce Solutions of Greater Dallas,

site for the job fair featuring businesses for
the Paragon Outlet Mall opening August
2012. On May 4th, over 40 businesses will be
recruiting during the fair from 3pm to 7pm.
Students from the campus will be assisting
with the project. The outlet mall will bring
a great shopping venue and employment
opportunity to Grand Prairie and opportunies
for high school students.
What’s Your
Career Plan?
Grand Prairie ISD Programs of Study are

Health Science
The Health Science Technology students at Dubiski Career
High School are immersed in a multi-faceted Health careers
course of study for four years.
The freshman and sophomore years are dedicated to learning the basics of the healthcare
system. During the second semester in the
sophomore year they receive their healthcare
provider Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
Certification and continue working in the smart
hospital. During the junior year, these students
have clinical rotations in up to 27 different areas
of Baylor Medical Center in Irving.
These students learn the necessary skills during
their sophomore and junior years while honing
their craft in our Dubiski School of Health
Science Smart Hospital. In this patient simulator laboratory, the students learn to properly
perform patient hygiene, follow privacy laws
and properly drape and perform basic nursing
procedures on our “patients”. Every student is
able to perform these skills prior to entering the
Practicum class and working with patients and
staff at Baylor.
Their senior year is spent doing another year of
internship at Baylor, becoming EMT certified
or becoming Pharmacy Technician/IV technician certified. EMT students obtain clinical
hours with Grand Prairie Fire Department
MICU’s (ambulances) as well as Methodist
Hospital and gain real world skills prior to
taking their National Certification Test.
Pharmacy Technician students learn how to
formulate and compound medications and
properly dispense them to their patients. This
allows them to have a positive outlook on the
job market upon graduation.
Using these skills, they can either have a good
job in a growing industry or help pay for
expenses while going to college.
