Your Lord knows best what is in your minds; if you are righteous, then surely, He is Most Forgiving to those who turn to Him again and again (17:26) A Publication of Lajna Ima’illah & Nasiratul Ahmadiyya USA July - September 2014 Lajna Matters 3rd Quarter Issue, 2014 2 of 40 Ahadith Hazrat Abdullah bin Umr bin ‘Aasra relates that when the Holy Prophetsaw was asked what is the key to enter Paradise, he replied: “Telling the honest truth. Truth inculcates obedience. Obedience inculcates those qualities that a true Believer possesses. And a true Believer enters Paradise.” He was further inquired about who shall enter the gates of Hell. The Holy Prophetsaw replied: “He who shall tell lies. Falsehood inculcates disobedience. Disobedience inculcates Kufr. A disbeliever is destined for Hell” (Imam Malik). Shaddad ibn Ausra relates that the Holy Prophetsaw said: “A wise person is one who watches over himself and restrains himself from that which is harmful and strives for that which will confront him after death; and a foolish one is he who gives rein to his cravings and seeks from Allah the fulfillment of his vain desires” (Tirmidhi). The Holy Prophetsaw said: “Even in poverty, prosperity, and deprivation of one’s rights, one has to obey the commander. When a person observes displeasure in his leader, he should be patient, because one who disobeys dies a death of ignorance” (Bukhari). Writings of the Promised Messiahas It is my personal experience that to obey the Holy Prophetsaw with a sincere heart and love him, ultimately makes a person beloved of God. God creates in his heart a burning for His Own love and such a one, withdrawing his heart from everything else, leans towards God and his affection and desire remain only for God Almighty. He then overcomes his passions and from every direction extraordinary works of God Almighty appear as signs for his support and to help him (The Essence of Islam, p. 145). O all ye who dwell upon the earth, and O human souls that are in the east or in the west, I announce to you emphatically that the true reality on earth is Islam alone, and the true God is the God Who is described in the Qur’an, and the Prophet who has everlasting spiritual life and who is seated on the throne of glory and holiness, is Muhammad, the chosen one, peace be upon him. The proof of his spiritual life and holy majesty is that by following him and loving him we become recipients of the Holy Spirit and are favored with the bounty of converse with God and witness heavenly signs (Essence of Islam, Vol. I, p. 136). Now you can reflect and decide in your own minds that having made the covenant of Bai’at with me, and having accepted me as the Promised Messiah, arbiter and judge, if your hearts feel constrained over any decision or action of mine you should be concerned about the sincerity of your faith. No good can be expected from faith that is full of doubts and superstitions. If you have accepted truly that the Promised Messiah is in fact the arbiter, then submit to his order and his action and look upon his decisions with the respect so that you may be counted among those who honor the word of the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him, and esteem it highly. Sufficient is the evidence of the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him. He assures you that the Promised Messiah will be imam, and arbiter, and judge. If this is not enough to satisfy you then how will you be satisfied? (Ahmadiyyat - The Renaissance of Islam, p. 157). 3 of 40 Lajna Matters 3rd Quarter Issue, 2014 National Correspondence Message from National Sadr Lajna Ima’illah, Saliha Malik Allah has declared that the most beloved of Him are those who are righteous. And those who become righteous, they do so by submitting to His Will and being obedient to Him. The most beloved of Allah was our esteemed Master, Muhammad Mustafasaw, who showed us in every sphere of life how to “Obey Allah”. He showed us that obedience to Allah is nothing other than falling deeply in love with Him and ardently longing in turn to be accepted and embraced by Divine Love. Sometimes the word obedience loses its proper color and is seen as an arduous obligation. But we really understand the meaning of obedience to Allah when we reflect upon the Life of the Holy Prophetsaw and also the lives of God’s chosen ones; His prophets and Messengers and those who sacrificed everything for His sake - they were all deeply and profoundly in love with Allah. The subject is a complex one and beautifully explained in Huzoor’satba khutba, which I have included in this issue – Unconditional Obedience to Khilafat. Indeed when we take time to reflect upon the words “Obey Allah and obey His Messenger” we realize that they cover our whole journey in Islam through which we may be saved from the clutches of our own ego and the negative dictates of societal pressures. From the perspective of being stuck in the chains of one’s own ego or the dictates of society, obedience to Allah’s commandments can sometimes seem overwhelming and people might feel that certain things are beyond their capacity given their circumstances. However, when you love someone very deeply, you are completely prepared to forgo your own pleasures and choices for the sake of your beloved. You might stay up all night, for example, wondering how to please Him - Prayer You might think of doing special things to draw His attention – Good Deeds And when you discover that He likes certain qualities in people you do your level best to mold yourself in that way – Jihade Akbar. And you would definitely not want to deceive Him - Truthful. Let us all examine our level of obedience to Allah and His Messenger and our preparedness to sacrifice everything for His sake. Let us all examine our obedience to Khilafat and those in authority over us. Let us all recognize the true meaning of obedience in Islam, which is to fall deeply and profoundly in love with God and those who love God. It is to live our lives in Allah’s Care, having wholly submitted to Him. As the Promised Messiahas has said: Strive, therefore, to the utmost that not a jot or syllable of the Holy Qur’an should bear witness against you, and cause you to be apprehended on that account (Our Teaching, p. 24). Lajna Matters 3rd Quarter Issue, 2014 National Correspondence Letter from the National Sadr Lajna Ima’illah USA to of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Khamisatba Seeking Guidance July 18, 2014 Dear Beloved Huzoor, Assalamo Alaikum wa Rahmatullahe wa Barakatohu! I hope this letter finds Huzoor in the best of health and spirits. May Allah always be Huzoor’s support and Loving Protector. I am writing today at the direction of Respected Ameer Sahib USA to humbly request Huzoor’s guidance on several issues concerning the proper conduct for women in Jama’at events. There seems to be some confusion regarding the participation of women in Jama’at meetings and in particular: Jama’at Education meetings and Tabligh meetings where guests are invited. In Jama’at meetings such as Masih Maud Day and Khilafat Day, etc., where the whole Jama’at is gathered; men and women in their separate halls, (and children), I have understood the proper Jama’at protocol and conduct to be that the women do not recite the Holy Qur’an or sing the poems or give speeches, but they may participate in question/answer sessions through the PA system, which are sometimes held at the end of the meeting. In such meetings it is only the men who present. However the Nasirat may also present the Nazm or give speeches that they have prepared. (Though all the Jama’at meetings are very important and informative, I have realized the importance of Lajna meetings for this reason, which afford women the chance to fully participate). Local Jama’at Meetings: For the last few years, the Jama’at has encouraged each Majlis to hold an Education Day to celebrate the achievement of our students and thereby encourage our children to pursue a good education. As with the other Jama’at meetings, the men conduct them and Lajna and Nasirat observe through the PA system. Sometimes the Local Lajna Sadr asks me if our young women students can give a speech describing their school or college experience in those meetings. Wishing to keep consistent with the Jama’at protocol, as I understood it, I have always answered that our Lajna cannot give speeches, but the Nasirat may do so. My reasoning is that if we have a different arrangement for these Education Days, soon the other Jama’at meetings – Masih Maud Day etc. - would follow suit and other changes could also creep in. However, I gather that in some Jama’ats the organizers went ahead and included our young women as presenters via the PA system, without requesting input from me, hence the varied conduct and confusion. Recently one Jama’at President, who has planned an Education Day with invited guests for tomorrow Saturday July 19th, in which he wanted two young women to give speeches via the PA system, contacted me and raised some challenging questions: He explains that the message going to the respective Lajna graduates is a contradiction in that: 4 of 40 5 of 40 Lajna Matters 3rd Quarter Issue, 2014 It is allowed for them to conduct themselves in a public forum in school and college, even encouraged, but it is not allowed in the setting of the Mosque. If it is OK for Lajna to ask questions over the PA system and participate in the Shura, then why is it not OK for Lajna to share a speech? Especially when the speech pertains to their own experiences. There is a great ambiguity when it comes to Lajna participation in local programs. Especially when we look through the scope of MTA. Lajna participate in Real Talk programs, which are aired on MTA and go online. President Sahib has requested me to seek clarification from Huzoor on how Lajna should participate in a local Jama’at event as follows and is there a different allowance for the Education Day? Can they recite the Holy Quran over the PA system Can they recite a Nazm over the PA system Can they give a speech over the PA system Can they ask questions over the PA system Can a young Lajna member address a mixed gender audience, knowing that they are doing this already in their respective schools and college settings? Tabligh Events with invited Guests: Another point of confusion, which President Sahib raised concerns Tabligh events where guests are invited and the venue is restricted to one hall. He expresses the viewpoint that Lajna members should be able to sit with their invited guests in the hall. When I have been asked for guidance on this issue, I suggest that the women sit to one side of the room being very mindful of their observance of purdah and some of their women guests may choose to sit with them. However, there should at least be a separate area for ladies to take refreshments after the meeting. I do encourage a separate room for the women (as I have witnessed at the inauguration of Mosque events, which I have attended with Huzoor’s permission in UK), so that Ahmadis can show society about our practice of Hayaa and keeping separate, rather than follow society’s ways in these matters. When there is only one room, men and women tend to intermingle and some women are not so strong in their practice of purdah. On this matter also the majalis vary a lot in the way they conduct these events. Therefore we seek Huzoor’s guidance on the following: How should Lajna participate in an external facing event where men and women are invited and the venue is limited to a shared space? I have briefly explained my own viewpoint on these issues so that Huzoor may know my mind and correct me as needed. I humbly request Huzoor’s prayers for Jama’at USA. We are all hoping to do the right thing for our members and the Jama’at and eagerly await Huzoor’s guidance on these issues. Wassalam, 6 of 40 Lajna Matters 3rd Quarter Issue, 2014 National Correspondence Letters from the Office of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Khamisatba The following letter is in direct response to Sadr Sahiba request for guidance: August 2, 2014 Dear Sadr Sahiba Lajna Ima’illah USA, I have received your letter seeking guidance concerning the proper conduct for the women in Jamaat events. You have mentioned that some officials seek permissions and argue to include Lajna members’ speeches in Jamaat events in which men are also present, even though Lajna are in a separate place. This practice is not acceptable. A separate auxiliary organization of Lajna is formed to facilitate and cater to the needs of women in Jamaat. I have written about it to Ameer Sahib also. taking place and it is pleasing to read that by the Grace of Allah, a number of national visits, events and activities were organized. May Allah enable the members to serve the Jama’at with commitment and enthusiasm and make the efforts fruitful. May Allah the Almighty enable you to fulfill your duties in an exemplary manner, and may He bless you and your members in all your sincere efforts. Please convey my loving Salaam to all the Nasirat and Lajna Ima’illah members in USA. Wassalaam. August 28,2014 Dear Sadr Lajna Ima’illah USA, Assalamo Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi, I have received your activity reports for March and April 2014 and the Spring edition of the magazine ‘The Ayesha’, together with your request for prayers. Jazaka’Mullah. Arrangement for ladies and men in the same hall or room for Tabligh events is wrong. Your stance on this is very appropriate. Even if for some By the Grace of Allah, a number of Taleem & reason such Program has to be arranged in one hall, Tarbiyat program were held including the Lajna refreshment should be served in separate places for Mentoring Conference which was successful in ladies and men. every respect. Alhumdolillah. May Allah reward the Yours Sincerely. sincere efforts of Lajna Ima’illah USA and enable them to strive forward with zeal. Ameen. July 29, 2014 May Allah shower His blessings on you and enable Dear Sadr Lajna Ima’illah USA, you to serve the Jama’at in the best manner possible. I pray that your affiliation with the Jama’at Assalamo Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi and Khilafat may continue to grow. Please convey I have received your activity report for February my loving Salaam to all the Nasirat and Lajna 2014, together with your request for prayers. Ima’illah members in USA. Jazaka’Mullah. Wassalaam. The reports provide a good account of the activities 7 of 40 Lajna Matters 3rd Quarter Issue, 2014 Selection of Huzoor’satba Sermons Unconditional Obedience to Khilafat - June 6, 201 Do they then not look at the camel, how it is created And at the heaven, how it is raised high? And at the mountains, how they are firmly rooted? And at the earth, how it is spread out?’ (88:18-21) Hazrat Khalifatul Masihatba recited the above verses and gave a discourse on obedience in today’s Friday sermon. The Promised Messiahas has elucidated obedience of Prophethood and Imamat (spiritual leadership) of the time with reference to these verses. He has made, what may appear an odd connection between the camel and obedience of Prophethood and Imamat. However, the deep and profound spiritual significance of the Promised Messiah’sas words tells us that there are several words for the camel in Arabic but the specific word stated in the verse above is a plural noun and this signifies that God intends to explain cultural and communal traits of the camel here. The camel has a great sense of obedience. Camels walk/ travel in a long line and are led by an experienced camel in the front. The rest follow him at the same speed and none has any designs or aspiration to walk abreast with the one leading them, like other animals do, for example horses. Therefore in the first verse God has used the specific Arabic word for the camel to draw attention to its communal bearing of travelling in one long line and has thus laid emphasis on the need for an Imam to maintain unity. The significance of camels travelling in a line is that an Imam is needed to negotiate the journey of life and to avoid going astray. The camel is not negligent about making long journeys in the sense that it stores water. Similarly true believers should be mindful and ready for their journey of life and keep provisions and the best provision of life is righteousness. We have been enabled to accept the Promised Messiah as in this age and after him the system of Khilafat has been granted to us, which we should value and try to understand its essence. The Promised Messiah as had said that people who take Bai’at in his name will continue to come, thus the direct link with him is through Khilafat. The Promised Messiah’sas explanation of the verse above clearly shows that spiritual development and permanence of those who take his Bai’at is in staying connected to Khilafat. Progress of the Jama’at lies in staying connected to Khilafat, it facilitates facing satanic attacks. The Holy Prophetsaw said that an Imam is like a shield. Indeed, safety is behind the shield alone. And being behind the shield means perfect obedience. The Holy Prophet saw also said that whoever obeyed his Amir obeyed him and whoever disobeyed his Amir, disobeyed him. The Holy Qur’an also commands obedience in several places and it is indeed the secret for communal success and is a point that members of the Jama’at need to understand a great deal. Some question why do we have certain limits and do not have freedom in certain matters. Ahmadis should remember that Islam allows everything that is justifiable. The limits maintained are for moral correction, moral development and unity. Huzoor addressed Jama’at office-holders and said that if they wish to assist in the progress of the Jama’at then they need to understand the concept of obedience more than anyone else! If all office-holders on all levels understood the concept of obedience, the members of the Jama’at would inevitably understand it. Everyone would appear as the straight line of traveling camels. Amirs, Sadrs and other office-holders should self-reflect over their standards of obedience and ponder how they respond to any instruction of the Khalifa of the time. Do they obey instantly or do they construe their own meanings of what is instructed? Some office-holders act upon instructions received from the Khalifa Lajna Matters 3rd Quarter Issue, 2014 8 of 40 of the time but with some hesitation. This does not signify obedience. Obedience is when something is followed instantly. Indeed, it is fine to have your own opinion; however when the Khalifa of the time decides upon something, then one must overlook one’s opinion. Hazrat Mirza Bashir Ahmad Sahibra used to say that he held many opinions and also shared them with the Khalifa of the time. However, if his opinion was not accepted, then he did not even think about it and demonstrated perfect obedience. Perfect obedience alone will help us attain the level enjoined by God and His Messengersaw. One who takes Bai’at should instill this thinking and should prove it through practice. More than anyone else, this standard of obedience should be exhibited by office-holders from the top level to the bottom. If the information that reaches Huzoor is correct and some people do say that complete obedience is perhaps harmful; it is probably borne of the German historical background of Adolf Hitler insisting on obedience of everything he said resulting in German defeat and loss in World War II. Huzoor said he wished to make it very clear to every Ahmadi, every new Ahmadi and every youth that there is great difference between Khilafat and dictatorship. Khilafat is established after accepting the Imam of the age and everyone takes a pledge to work for the perpetuation of Khilafat. Islam teaches that there is no compulsion in religion, therefore when one accepts faith of one’s own volition; it is important to fulfill the pledge one takes. Obedience to Khilafat is important because mutual efforts have to be made to establish God’s kingdom on the earth under the leadership of one Imam. The other Muslims are without an Imam and the successful outcomes of the efforts of those who are associated with Ahmadiyya Khilafat tell us that they are borne of the strong sense of oneness as a community. Khilafat also draws attention to paying the dues of mankind, it exhorts to accept them and practice them. It instills the spirit of giving precedence to faith over worldly matters. Khilafat makes tremendous efforts to establish Unity of God whereas aims of worldly leaders are to extend their borders! They trample over justice for the sake of false pride and which dictator in the world has a personal connection with the people he rules? The Khalifa of the time has a personal connection with people of all backgrounds and all races. The content of the daily post of Khalifa of the time is an unbelievable matter for worldly people. People write personal letters to him, discussing their personal affairs. It is Khilafat that focuses on the pain of every Ahmadi of the world and the Khalifa of the time prays for them. Which worldly leader prays for the ailing? Which worldly leader is anxious for young women to get married and prays for them? Which worldly leader is concerned about education of children? Indeed, governments provide education and also provide health service but it is only the Khalifa of the time who is anxious for Ahmadi children to seek education and is anxious for them to have good health. There is no problem, be it of the Jama’at or of someone’s private life of which the Khalifa of the time is not aware, for which he does not make practical efforts and does not turn to God to pray! Huzoor said this is what he and all the Khulafa before him had been doing. Huzoor illustrated this outline of numerous tasks of the Khalifa of the time that God has entrusted to him and which he has to perform. Huzoor said: ‘There is no country in the world that I do not go to in my imagination before falling asleep and for whom I do not pray while sleeping and while waking. I am not saying this to count favors, no, this is my duty and may Allah the Exalted make me perform my duty more than ever.’ Huzoor said that his only purpose here was to make it clear that there can be no comparison between Khilafat and worldly leaders. Another misunderstanding that Huzoor wished to remove, although he has previously explained it in his sermons on conditions of Bai’at, is about the pledge each Ahmadi makes with the Khalifa of the time to obey him in every ma’roof (good) decision. Some people assume that it is for them to define/interpret 9 of 40 Lajna Matters 3rd Quarter Issue, 2014 what is ma’roof and what is not. Let it be very clear that ma’roof has been defined by God and His Messengersaw. A Ma’roof decision is the decision made in light of the Holy Qur’an and Sunnah. According to the prophecy of the Holy Prophetsaw Khilafat was to be established on the precepts of Prophethood and according to the Promised Messiahas Khilafat is everlasting. Thus, Khilafat cannot operate contrary to the Qur’an and Sunnah and there is no option but to obey Khilafat, or prove that the Khalifa of the time did such and such thing contrary to Qur’an and Sunnah. In order to prove that decisions are wrong much reflection will be needed and keeping within the confines of civility it should be written to the Khalifa of the time. While seeking a review is permitted, however, gossiping and spreading rumors is not allowed. So that if there is an error of understanding, Khalīfa of the time may correct that, or, if he will find it prudent to inform the Jama’at at large about it, he may do so. When the Jama’at grows and progresses, the hypocrites also want to move into action and the envious also start with what they do. True loyalty to Khilafat is in making their plans fail each time and to not even go near those who encourage thinking ill of others. The Promised Messiahas said that when truly adopted, obedience generates light in the heart. He said spiritual endeavors/exercises were not needed as much as obedience was needed. He also said unity cannot be established without obedience. Stories of early Islam tell us that the Companions ra gave their lives in obedience and thus Islam spread. This does not mean Islam spread with force. It was the spirit of obedience that made early Muslims face large numbers of enemies. We observe that the followers of Hazrat Musa as disobeyed him and as a result deprived themselves for forty years! The Jihad of this age is to reform ourselves and to spread the message of truth and this has to be done following the Khalifa of the time. Huzoor said in order to be saved from being ruined we need to enhance our levels of obedience. No matter how much the enemies of Ahmadiyyat persecute us God will take us to our destination but obedience is the condition and the obedience has to be complete. The other Muslims also believe in what we believe in but no patience or fortitude can be seen in them. Today, only the Jama’at of the Promised Messiahas demonstrates steadfastness and fortitude and this illustrates the subject stated in the Qur’anic verse: ‘And among others from among them who have not yet joined them…’ (62:4). Just as the Promised Messiahas said that the camel makes provision for his journey and is not negligent, similarly true believers should be always prepared and cautious and indeed the best provision to take with one is righteousness. We should adopt that tenor in our worship and our practice, which will be the best provision for us. By accepting the Imam of the age we have obtained spiritual water, now it is up to us to look after it and to avail of it. Fortunate are those who listen to the words of the Imam of the age with perfect obedience and go on to obey and this leads them to also derive the beneficence of Khilafat. People who chase worldly aims have no connection with spirituality whereas the purpose of those who seek pleasure of Allah has nothing to do with worldly gain and loss. We should try and attain nearness to God with perfect obedience and enhance in righteousness. Our objective is to establish the kingdom of God on earth and we spread the message of Islam to bring the world under the banner of the Holy Prophetsaw. These are the objectives for which Khilafat works. What is needed is to understand the essence of Khilafat. And this can only happen with perfect obedience. No matter how academic or authoritative one thinks one may be, there is no room in Jama’at Ahmadiyya for one who is not obedient and such knowledge and wisdom cannot spiritually benefit the world either. Lajna Matters 3rd Quarter Issue, 2014 We should always be mindful of the phrase of the Promised Messiahas: ‘It is essential that man makes a practice of following the Imam.’ Intellect and wisdom is fruitful with obedience of the Khalifa of the time and cessation of one’s own interpretation of matters. In light of the commentary of the Promised Messiah as the remainder verses recited at the start of the sermon we see that man can attain spiritual heights only when he understands the concept of: ‘…obey Allah and obey His Messenger and those who are in authority over you…’(4:60). Office-holders cannot rightfully be ‘authority over’ people unless they too completely obey Khilafat and do not desist from making their own interpretation; rather they consider each word of the Khalifa of the time as worthy of being obeyed. When some matters are investigated, at times the initial effort is to find out who made the complaint. No office-holder should be concerned with this. If they are asked to investigate and report they should not spin their own interpretations on matters. If an instruction of the Khalifa of time is not fully understood, then rather than guess what its interpretation might be, the Khalifa of the time should be written to and further advice sought. If each member of the Jama’at is obedient we will head towards spiritual heights and our faith will be as strong as mountains and as a result the message of Islam will spread in all directions in the world. With reference to spreading Islam, Huzoor said that some people are concerned about an objection raised over a saying of Hazrat Musleh Maudra, which was on a banner at Jalsa that if Germany is conquered Europe will be conquered. The objection raised was that we appear to have dangerous resolve although we seem peaceful. The objection was either raised due to ignorance or mischief. If it was mischief, then it is a dangerous step to incite against Muslims. Whoever explained to the objector also did not appear to have sufficient knowledge and has caused pointless concern. Generally speaking Germans are very sensible and they know the missionary and humanitarian works of the Jama’at are aimed to spread the beautiful teaching of Islam and to bring people into its fold. The word ‘conquer’ does not connote use of force or any aspirations of governance. We are spreading our message and let alone Germany and Europe, we aim to triumph all over the world, but not with the use of force. Hazrat Musleh Maudra had in fact articulated the significance of the German nation and alluded to their prominence within Europe and had meant to say that if the Germans understand Islam they will make the rest of Europe understand it. This is true, Germans are at the forefront even in the European Union, and their capacity is evident. Huzoor said he laid the foundation stone of a mosque at Wiesbaden a couple of days ago. German guests came to the event and Huzoor briefly spoke on the teachings of Islam and everyone was appreciative of Huzoor’s message. We should remember that if we work with sincerity and seek help from God, these people or their next generation will come into the fold of Islam. Whoever God will wish, He will enable them to accept Islam. We do not need to be scared or defensive, worldly governance is not our objective. Our task is to instill love of God in hearts and we will continue to do this and for this each Ahmadi needs to be completely obedient to Khilafat. 10 of 40 11 of 40 Lajna Matters 3rd Quarter Issue, 2014 Taleem Matters The Ahmadiyya Muslim Students Association for Women, AMSAW Our beloved Huzoor, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vatba, advised Lajna students to establish local Ahmadiyya Muslim Students Associations at universities at which Ahmadi Muslim ladies were studying. Alhamdulillah, we opened our first chapter of AMSAW in the United States, at the University of Maryland. Huzooratba gave three basic instructions: First and most importantly, we need to understand our role as Ahmadi Muslim ladies. Second, after we understand our role, we need to be thirsty for education, in both the religious and secular sense. Third, once we understand our role as Ahmadi Muslim ladies and have gained education (which is a continuous process), then we need to productively use our education and convey the message of Islam and Ahmadiyyat to others. The goals of AMSAW are: Faith – To promote awareness of the true teachings of Islam and the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. Love – To provide friendship, moral support, and professional guidance to women. Service – To offer service to the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and the larger American community. According to our current Taleem program, October has been designated as Seerat ul-Nabi month. Therefore all Lajna Majalis are requested to hold special Seerat ul Nabi meetings (Jalsa’s) and events during this month to educate Lajna and non-Ahmadi guests on the excellent life and character of our beloved prophet, the Holy Prophet Mohammadsaw. Discussion and speech topics can include any aspect of his character and life. Some of the suggested topics are the Holy Prophet’s saw kindness towards fellow human beings including his enemies, his courage and patience, his treatment towards his wives and respect for women’s rights. One topic that must be presented is the love of the Promised Messiahas for his beloved Prophetsaw. May Allah help us to follow the life and teachings of our beloved Prophetsaw and Promised Messiahas, Ameen. Huzooratba said: It is my desire that the members of our Jama'at strive constantly to reform themselves and achieve the highest standards of Taqwa so that they can become the best model for Muslims in the world. It is essential to selfreflect and assess your own every day behavior and then try to improve your character and actions so that you can come close to achieving the values that the Promised Messiah, peace be upon him, expected from adherents of his Jama'at. As Ahmadi Muslims, you are expected to set the highest example of goodness, honesty, integrity and most importantly- piety and righteousness. The best way that we can achieve the standards that our beloved Hazoor atba wants us to achieve is to walk on the narrow but straight path of Taqwa. Hazrat Ubbay bin Kab, a companion of the Holy Prophet saw, aptly explained Taqwa by likening a muttaqi (a righteous person) to one who walks through thorny bushes, taking care that his clothes are not caught in and torn by their branches. Today’s world is full of thorny bushes, waiting to entangle us, and our children in worldly enticements, which distract us from our true goal. Quarter 7 of the Tarbiyat syllabus covers some aspects of Taqwa presented in the writings of the Promised Messiahas and sermons of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vatba. Huzooratba also drew our attention to listening to his Friday sermons and stressed their importance in strengthening our attachment and loyalty to the blessed institution of Khilafat. Our reports and surveys show that overall the number of Lajna members listening to Huzoor atba’s sermons is still very low. How can we be the beneficiaries of the blessings of Khilafat if we do not even listen to the Khalifa’s words, let alone act on them? Please ponder over this matter and do your utmost to make listening to Friday sermons a regular part of your own and your family’s life. May Allah Ta'ala enable us all to do so, Ameen. # Majalis reported >75% members listening/reading Friday sermons SMALL MEDIUM LARGE MAY 2014 14 JUNE 2014 17 JULY 2014 19 Sacramento Merced New Orleans Charlotte Las Vegas Bloomington Iowa Oshkosh Hartford Baltimore Sacramento Merced Charlotte Las Vegas Bloomington Iowa Oshkosh Virginia South Dallas LA East Long Island Virginia South Virginia Central Dallas LA East Queens Long Island Sacramento Charlotte Las Vegas Bloomington Iowa Oshkosh Rochester New Orleans Baltimore Washington DC LA West Hartford Buffalo Zion Virginia South Virginia Central Dallas LA East Laurel Baltimore Ft. Ramadhan 2014 enabled Lajna to pray to Allah for self-reformation and mankind. This blessed month was a time to invite people to learn about Islam and rejuvenate their personal love of God or come to find their way to God. Therefore, several Lajna majalis held tabligh events during the month of Ramadhan. The guests they invited were very pleased and enlightened. Dhiya Bakr, National Tabligh Secretary Syracuse, NY In June, the Lajna members hosted a Women's Interfaith Event. The topic was “Meeting the Messiah of your Community.” Presenters spoke on the teachings about the Messiah in their respective faiths. The faiths represented were the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints, United Methodist Church, Judaism, and the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. Lajna members distributed literature such as World Crisis and the Pathway to Peace and Huzoor’s sermon entitled ‘Love for the Holy Prophetsaw.’ Seventeen guests attended the event. Alhamdulillah, we received very positive feedback. The Lajna assisted in hosting an Interfaith Ramadhan Dinner in July. The regional Qaid of upstate New York elaborated on the subject of fasting, the fourth pillar of Islam. The speech was very well received by the audience. Our regional missionary was available to answer the guests’ questions. Twenty-six guests (ten men and sixteen ladies) representing different Christian sects, Muslim sects, and Judaism attended the program. Many guests sent positive emails about the event. Chicago NorthWest During the blessed month of Ramadhan, the Lajna invited women from various faiths to our mosque for an Interfaith Iftar Dinner. Alhamdullilah, twenty six guests attended the event. The guests were greeted at the registration table with gift bags containing jama'at literature and magazines. The program began with the recitation and translation of select verses of the Holy Qur’an, followed by a brief presentation on Islam, Ramadhan and Fasting. After a Q&A session we invited guests to observe the traditional Iftar; by listening to the Dars and then saying our Maghrib prayers followed by dinner. The guests continued the conversation while partaking of the buffet dinner with all Lajna members. All the guests expressed that they enjoyed our event and would like to come back again. Dayton, OH Lajna members participated in a community barbeque that was organized by the Dayton Jama’at on Eid Day. Lajna members helped in decorating the mosque, putting up signs announcing Eid and the barbeque, and preparing food for the barbeque. They also distributed small gifts to the guests. About 250 non-Muslim guests attended. The local Lajna Matters 3rd Quarter Issue, 2014 20 of 40 news covered the event. Georgia/South Carolina Lajna members held an interfaith meeting. Five guests attended the meeting. The focus of the gathering was healthy eating. Each person was asked to read a religious verse about healthy eating habits, bring a healthy dish, and explain why the dish is healthy. The Lajna also held an interfaith meeting focusing on “The Glory of Allah’s Creation.” The guests discussed caring for Allah’s creation, being healthy to sustain the practice of worship, fasting, and being grateful. Attendees shared their knowledge about spiritual and healthy living with others. They also shared personal goals. Additionally, members attended an interfaith that focused on how faith communities can work towards solving homelessness issues. Queens, NY The Queens Jama’at was invited to attend the Queens Borough President’s Iftaar program in observance of Ramadhan at the New York Hall of Science. Lajna Matters 3rd Quarter Issue, 2014 A Beloved Sister Passes Away Hajja Naima Latif of Zion IL, wife of Zion Local Sadr, Hajji Jalaluddin Latif peacefully passed September 23, 2014 while preparing for Zuhr prayer time. Inna lillahi wa inna illahi rajeoon. She was born May 21, 1939 to parent Mamie Robinson and the late Perry Robinson who passed while her mother was still expecting, in Takoma Park, Maryland. She attended Dunbar High School in Washington DC and West Virginia State University. She volunteered for military service in the United States Army Women’s Corp, trained and worked in medical records and received an honorable discharge. Her civil commitments included lawful, peaceful demonstration including the notable March on Washington, DC with Dr. Martin Luther King. She converted to Ahmadiyyat early in her marriage and set her own pace to study the religion for herself. She regularly attended jumu’ah prayer only missing the few before her demise. It was also her practice to attend Lajna meetings, ijtemas, and national and international jalsas. She realized the benefits of optional and prescribed fasting as well and itakaaf observance. Naima volunteered weekly providing rides for the elderly members of her local jama’at, pioneers like Uncle Muhammad Sadiq and his wife Aunty Amina Sadiq, Uncle Bashir Afzal and his wife Aunty Jameela Afzal. She was central in the Islamic education of her children from habitual encouragement by example of regular prayers to getting them excused from school each week to attend jumu’ah prayers. She performed Hajj in 2002 with her husband and a large delegation of Jama’at USA members. Over the 40 years of membership in Jama’at Ahmadiyyat, Hajja Naima served in many local offices including Lajna Sadr in North Jersey, National Waqfe Jadid Secretary, and most recently on the USA Jama’at national Rishta Nata team. She was a Moosia, and ever obedient to Khilafat. She is survived by her husband Hajji Jalaluddin, children Abdur Rahim/wife Rehana, Junayd/wife Suriyya, daughter Aliya, and Hakim/wife Samiyya. There are seven grandchildren who will miss her loving smile. In addition to fulfilling prescribed fasting during the month of Ramadhan, Hajja Naima also practiced optional fasting on Mondays and Thursdays per the sunnah of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be on him. She realized the benefits of Itika’af during the last 10 days of Ramadhan, and would attend regularly with her husband. She loved the month of Ramadhan and can be remembered to recently say, “I have been waiting all year for this month! It’s nothing but mercy all month long." She was very dedicated to attending Lajna meetings and was known for encouraging others to strive hard and stay connected to jama’at. She welcomed financial sacrifices and any jewelry or valuables given to her were donated to mosque funds. She eventually told her husband not to bother buying her any expensive gifts because she would only donate them to the mosque. So why not just donate money directly there. She showed no signs of arrogance, selfishness, impatience or insensibility. She would often pray for Allah to make her actions, her thoughts, and her words, match her heart. She never wanted to be associated with hypocrisy and prayed often to be safeguarded from it. She was not inquisitive about others' personal affairs and was very trustworthy. So much so people would often confide in her, even strangers she would meet for the first time. Her life was centered around Islam and Ahmadiyyat. She saw value in people from all walks of life. 38 of 40 39 of 40 Lajna Matters 3rd Quarter Issue, 2014 She would refuse to backbite. When women, from jama’at or otherwise, would want to gossip or even mention something disagreeable about someone else who was not present she would say, “I do not want to backbite” or she would say, “I do not want to eat anyone’s flesh.” She would say it very frankly. It got to a point where people would stop themselves before gossiping around her and say, “yes, I know, Naima, you don’t backbite”…and then would almost always discontinue that conversation topic. She did not stay on the telephone long as a general rule and would say it encourages frivolous conversation which easily could get someone involved in backbiting. She liked to discuss only what was important and necessary on the phone and then lovingly give her salams, even with her own children. It may seem like she was stern, but in fact she was very warm hearted, funny, always courteous and very graceful. Even people who have wronged her, or her own children, she would not engage in backbiting them. She would instead pray for them and try to overlook. Her obedience to Khilafat was exemplary. When the 3rd Khalifara visited the USA for Jalsa at Drew University, he gave a speech advising women to observe purdah, she immediately began wearing the veil before the speech was over, without telling her husband or family and didn’t remove it until her older years, despite being the only visibly veiled muslim in her town, at a time when Americans were not at all familiar with Islam or seeing a garbed Muslim woman. She said wearing the full veil gave her so much courage when she had always been a naturally shy person. A moment she felt most proud of was when she attended UK Jalsa 2000 at Islamabad and during her mulaqat with the 4th Khalifa he asked her who her father was. My mother looked surprised and responded that he was not a muslim. Huzoor ra looked surprised and said she looked as though she had been Ahmadi her entire life. She was very touched by this remark. She was very committed to making prayer on time and in congregation, especially while raising children. Every day after fajr prayer she would recite Qur’an in Arabic with her entire family. Even when her husband was at work for long hours in New York City, she was committed to making sure all the children would come in for prayer - even if playing with neighbors and friends. So much so that children in the neighborhood would also come and want to join the congregational prayer as well. In her last days she found so much comfort in the beautiful relationship she had with Huzur and wanted to write to him expressing her deep gratitude for the homeopathic medicines he’d sent as well as his special prayers and attention. She wanted him to know that she was so grateful and amazed by his personal attention and remarked, “ Can you imagine the Khalifa of the whole wide world praying for you and sending you medicine? It’s so humbling!” Hajja Naima also remarked, “To be surrounded by such loving sisters and the community and my family, and with so many people praying for you... I am so grateful. I am not even going to try to guess how this could be.” In closing, we share one of Naima’s favorite prayers from the Holy Qur’an, which inspired her to want to join Islam many years ago. May Allah Almighty have mercy on on her soul. Our Lord, we have heard a Crier calling us unto faith, ‘Believe ye in your Lord,’ and we have believed. Our Lord, forgive us, therefore, our errors and remove from us our evils, and in death number us with the righteous (Holy Qur’an 3: 194).
