www.kuk.de Traffic facilities in central Berlin B 96 federal road Startup Tiergarten Spreebogen tunnel (TTS) For the central area of Germany's capital, Berlin, with its new government quarter and the newly-designed Potsdamer Platz, a solution was needed to manage road traffic moving in a north-south direction along the B 96 federal road. As a result of the planning process, the construction of a road tunnel between Heidestraße to the north and the Landwehr canal to the south was begun in 1995. There are additional entry and exit ramps at Invalidenstraße and Kemperplatz. The tunnel allows through traffic to be kept out of the government quarter and the above-ground road that cut through the Tiergarten park can be removed. The tunnel is composed of three main sections in a north-south direction: Fully equipped tunnel Heidestraße access ramp - Invalidenstraße access ramp Two tunnels separated by a central wall, each with one lane and a hard shoulder, total width of road surface in each tunnel 6 m, plus a 1 m wide emergency footpath on each side. Operations buildings There are three operations buildings to accommodate the technical equipment; they are all entirely below ground level. Invalidenstraße access ramp - Kemperplatz access ramp Two tunnels separated by a central wall, each with one lane and a hard shoulder, total width of road surface in each tunnel 8,5 m, plus a 1 m wide emergency footpath on each side. In the area of the main station there is access to the German Railways underground car park. Kemperplatz access ramp - Reichpietschufer access ramp Two tunnels separated by a central wall, each with one lane and a hard shoulder, total width of the road surface in each tunnel 6 m, plus a 1 m wide emergency footpath on each side. In this area there is access to the Sony Center and the supply center at Potsdamer Platz (VEZ-Daimler-Chrysler). Start of operations in the B 96 Tiergarten-tunnel Because of delays in the construction of the tunnel near the Lehrter station, the tender procedure for tunnel equipment according to the execution planning that was current at the time was suspended in 1999. In 2002, it appeared that the basic tunnel structure would be completed by the end of 2003, and because of this, the Berlin senate administration restructured the project leadership organization and commissioned Krebs und Kiefer to carry out the project management for the start of operations.
