THE MUSIC CENTER 50TH ANNIVERSARY SPECTACULAR SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2014 MC50_GALA_PROG_1214.indd 1 11/24/14 11:52 AM MC50_GALA_PROG_1214.indd 2 11/24/14 11:52 AM LETTERS FROM THE PRESIDENT AND BOARD CHAIR Dear Friends, Dear Friends, On December 6, 1964, the doors opened to welcome the very first audience into the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for a celebratory performance by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, led by Maestro Zubin Mehta. Dorothy Chandler was in attendance, along with luminaries, politicians and arts lovers from across our great city. Only the second performing arts center to be created in the United States, The Music Center established downtown Los Angeles and the arts as the epicenter of a burgeoning city. Tonight, fifty years to the day of that opening event, we celebrate The Music Center, and we celebrate Los Angeles. This evening’s performance is a demonstration of the vision, commitment, and dedication of so many people and institutions over the years. We have to recognize and thank the County of Los Angeles, whose leaders and staff members continue to support the extraordinary concept of a public-private partnership, putting the arts at the heart of our County. The Music Center, now the second largest performing arts center in the nation, is an example of this extraordinary relationship, and, clearly, it would not be possible to succeed at the level we have without our partners at the County. We also have to recognize and thank the exemplary resident companies of The Music Center–Center Theatre Group, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, the Los Angeles Opera and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. From the very beginning, The Music Center has always been about connecting our community to great art, and these organizations, as well as Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center, represent the highest level of artistic achievement and performance in the world, bringing the very best in the performing arts to all Angelenos year after year. This evening’s performance heralds an unprecedented collaboration of our four resident companies, and the relatively new Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center, on stage together for the first time, with a special simulcast of the Los Angeles Philharmonic performing Esa Pekka Salonen’s Helix from our Walt Disney Concert Hall next door. Musicians, dancers, actors, choreographers, directors, stagehands, designers, costumers, make-up artists, and stage managers have all come together to create a remarkable moment. Fifty years of performances. Fifty years of delighting audiences. Fifty years of artistic collaborations, of never-to-be-forgotten moments on the stage. We never could have achieved any of this without all of you, our donors. We are proud and thankful that we can share this moment with you. Stephen D. Rountree President & CEO As we sit here this evening in celebration of The Music Center, it is impossible not to wonder at the generosity of the human spirit that made this all happen. Surely Dorothy Chandler was the igniting spark, but from that spark has emanated fifty years of consistent and continuing philanthropy in the belief that the arts unite us all and make us individually and collectively better people and citizens of the world. Based on that belief, we as a community have built and sustained an extraordinary institution that has given back to us a thousandfold in so many ways–culturally, educationally, economically, personally and for our own civic pride. Our–your–sacrifices, decisions and passions have given us The Music Center, and it is that same generosity that will support its future. It is you who have made it possible for the finest artists of our time to share their gifts with Los Angeles. It is you who have ensured that over ten million Los Angeles children have had an up-close-and-personal experience with the performing arts in a way that was life-changing for many. It is you who have guaranteed that The Music Center and its resident companies will thrive among the finest performing arts institutions in the world. I thank you for your support of The Music Center’s 50th Anniversary tonight, and recognize with great appreciation the generosity of so many community members who have participated in our Anniversary initiatives and the wonderful on-line reprise of Dorothy Chandler’s Buck Bag campaign. This outpouring of support has allowed us to celebrate the resident companies and dance program of The Music Center tonight in an extraordinary collaboration, and ensures a healthy future for The Music Center’s programming and arts education. I want to add a special thanks to our Gala Co-Chairs Judy Beckmen, Brindell Gottlieb, Eva Stern, Alyce Williamson and our Gala Committee for their leadership and hard work. And of course, we are deeply indebted to The Blue Ribbon, and our Host Committee, for their extraordinary show of support for The Music Center’s 50th Anniversary Celebration. On behalf of Board of Directors of The Music Center, I thank you all. Each and every person here, and many, many others who are not here, deserve enormous gratitude for building and sustaining the cultural life of Los Angeles and The Music Center. In accordance with the serene orderliness of modernism, the five-level structure was sheathed in black granite and dark glass and surrounded by a portico of white fluted columns. The architect, Welton Becket, explained, “We wanted the building to give the patron a feeling of elegance and beauty befitting the rich cultural adventures to be experienced within, and yet we wanted it to be contemporary and understated so that it would not overpower people.” 12 THE MUSIC CENTER MC50_GALA_PROG_1214.indd 12 11/24/14 11:52 AM THE FIRST 50 YEARS The Pavilion’s gently curving sides were at once sveltely modern and majestically classical. Because of its hilltop location, the word “acropolis” was attached to it from the beginning, sometimes in admiration, sometimes in concern at its elitist implications. On this evening, however, everyone present understood the magnitude of the accomplishment. Governor Edmund G. “Pat” Brown, Mayor Sam Yorty, Cardinal James Francis McIntyre, movie stars, moguls, celebrities of all stripes, and millionaires aplenty mingled in a made-to-order warm, clear Los Angeles night. Twenty-eight-year-old Zubin Mehta, Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, commenced the openingnight program with Richard Strauss’s Fanfare. Becket leaned over to Dorothy Chandler and said quietly, “We really did it, didn’t we?” She beamed. It was almost exactly ten years since she had conceived the idea of raising the money for the Music Center. Acclaimed violinist Jascha Heifetz came onstage for the performance of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, during which, Time “We were very excited watching The Music Center grow. When we walked through the front doors that first time, I remember seeing Dorothy Chandler on the Founders level. She was leaning over the railing, waving to a friend and saying, ‘Isn’t this fun!’” – Kathy Dooley, LAMC subscriber since 1965 It was called a pavilion because, as Becket said, “the building would be seen from all sides. We did not wish to turn our back on any part of the city.” It was, he added, “the most complex architectural problem our firm has ever attempted,” largely because of the multiple kinds of performances that were to grace its stage. Guests entering the foyer glimpsed the amber onyx walls and curved balconies. Women in long dresses glided up the dramatically cantilevered marble staircase that crossed a pool filled with white azaleas into the Grand Hall. The glow and glitter of jewels and formal gowns were infinitely amplified by marble-framed mirrors that soared up the walls and by the massive crystal chandeliers, each seventeen feet high and weighing over a ton. The arcs of the interior walls and balconies provided dramatic contrast to the angles of the exterior. The Grand Hall was meant as a place to meet and greet, as Becket put it, “a truly elegant, spacious and dramatic area for gathering.” Becket’s architectural philosophy reflected a concept known as “total design.” His firm controlled, as far as possible, every aspect of the building, from the shape and texture of the exterior to the composition of the carpets. He had sent designers to Bavaria to make sure the crystal of the chandeliers was cut exactly as imagined. His firm had designed the carpets and had them woven in Hong Kong. As he chatted with attendees at the gala, Becket would occasionally interrupt himself to whisper instructions to a colleague to move a drape here or brighten the lighting there. A grand flight of stairs led the guests to the elaborate auditorium itself, with its tiered, curved balconies. But what everyone was waiting for was the music. The orchestra had been rehearsing in the hall for weeks, but this was the first opportunity for an audience to hear the full orchestra in the newly completed hall. magazine wrote, “every member of the audience could feel himself the epicenter of the soaring sound.” At the conclusion of the performance, Mehta turned to the audience, his baton at his side, to say, “This is the most unique city in the twentieth century. I do not think it is too late now, in midcentury, to begin a new cultural life.” He motioned to Dorothy Chandler, seated in the first balcony, the Founders Circle. “I would like you all to join me in paying homage to the one person who is most of all responsible for the creation of this edifice. Unlike the princes of Florence and the pharaohs of Egypt, she is a dignified, simple lady.” Dorothy Chandler, radiant in white embroidered silk and a beautiful display of diamonds, rose reluctantly to her feet after a nudge by her son, Otis. The audience accorded her a long, heartfelt ovation, to which she bowed slightly. A music critic wrote, “In nearly half a century of concert going, I do not recall hearing a more enthusiastic or a longer round of sustained applause with its standing ovation than was accorded Mrs. Chandler.” At her side, Norman Chandler was proud to share in the celebration of his wife’s ambition come to splendid realization. “The acoustics were perfect, and it was so beautiful, and I realized my dream had come true,” Dorothy Chandler said. “What is important here tonight is not the fund-raising or the building that we are in. The only really important thing here tonight is the music we heard performed. That will go on forever.” The Music Center of Los Angeles County: The First 50 Years, by Margaret Leslie Davis, will be available in the spring of 2015. 50TH ANNIVERSARY STAGE SPECTACULAR MC50_GALA_PROG_1214.indd 13 13 11/24/14 11:52 AM THE MUSIC CENTER THROUGH THE YEARS 1955 1959 1962 Dorothy Buffum Chandler and friends host the Eldorado Party, named for the Cadillac Eldorado raffled off at the event, which raises more than $400,000 towards building a permanent home for the performing arts in Los Angeles. On behalf of the 470 members of The Blue Ribbon, we wish The Music Center a Happy 50 th Anniversary! The Music Center was born out of the determination and zeal of one of the city’s most dedicated visionaries, Dorothy Buffum Chandler. Mrs. Chandler, or Buff as she was affectionately known to her friends, was determined to bring a world-class cultural center to the heart of Los Angeles. Volunteering her own time, energy and resources, Mrs. Chandler encouraged others to share her passion and awakened an enormous commitment in the people of Los Angeles who supported her vision and helped to make her dream come true. She united Eastsiders and Westsiders, actors and industrialists, newcomers and native Angelenos, creating a dynamic organization of volunteers and leaders, including The Blue Ribbon, which has remained at the pinnacle of Los Angeles’ philanthropic organizations. Mrs. Chandler herself founded The Blue Ribbon, which over the last five decades has been lucky to have 1,200 dedicated volunteers who have raised over $72 18 million to benefit The Music Center, its resident companies and arts education programs. Our signature event, The Blue Ribbon Children’s Festival, invites more than 18,000 fifth graders to The Music Center to experience a live performance at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and since 1970 has hosted more than 815,000 students. The Blue Ribbon is only one example of the numerous support groups and volunteers who have continued Mrs. Chandler’s legacy. We all understand the value of the arts and how they enrich lives and society at large. In the words of Dorothy Chandler, “A life without commitment, without dedication to a purpose beyond ourselves, and without a close partnership, is only half a life.” And to everyone here whose passion, dedication and commitment allows The Music Center to grow and thrive as the cultural heart of Los Angeles, we say thank you. THE MUSIC CENTER MC50_GALA_PROG_1214.indd 18 11/24/14 11:52 AM THEATRES Dorothy Chandler Pavilion Named in honor of the visionary Dorothy Chandler who led the campaign to build a home for the performing arts in Los Angeles. Designed by Welton Becket The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the first and largest theatre of The Music Center, opened its doors on December 6, 1964. The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion has been the site of unparalleled performances by stunning music luminaries and virtuosos. It was the home of the LA Philharmonic for decades and the site for more than 20 Academy Awards® presentations between 1969 and 1999. It is now the home of the LA Opera, sharing its stage with Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center. Ahmanson Theatre Named in honor of Howard Ahmanson. Designed by Welton Becket The Ahmanson Theatre opened in 1967, three years after the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, with a state-of-the-art configuration to provide variable seating capacity and accommodate a diverse selection of performances, from the intimate to the spectacular. It has been the host of theatrical world premieres, award-winning shows and is the ideal stage for musicals and direct-from-Broadway productions. Mark Taper Forum Walt Disney Concert Hall Designed by Welton Becket Designed by Frank Gehry The Mark Taper Forum also opened in 1967 and is The Music Center’s most intimate theatre. This is a circular building, with an exterior drum that is decorated with an intricate relief-sculpture mural and surrounded by two reflecting pools. The “thrust stage” provides seating on three-sides of the performers giving the audience the opportunity to view the performance from a variety of perspectives. It is the ideal stage for intimate dramatic plays and productions by Center Theatre Group. Completed in 2003, Walt Disney Concert Hall, an architectural masterpiece and modern marvel, is home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Los Angeles Master Chorale. Walt Disney Concert Hall is one of the most acoustically sophisticated concert halls in the world, providing both visual and aural intimacy for an unparalleled musical experience. The auditorium is configured in a “vineyard” style, which allows for seating on all four sides of the stage. Named in honor of S. Mark Taper. Named by Lillian Disney in honor of her husband, Walt Disney. 50TH ANNIVERSARY STAGE SPECTACULAR MC50_GALA_PROG_1214.indd 19 19 11/24/14 11:53 AM THE DOROTHY B. CHANDLER LEGACY SOCIETY A LEGACY CAN BEGIN AT ANY MOMENT For Dorothy Chandler, it began in the 1950s right here in Los Angeles with a vision to build a world-class performing arts center. A place for inspiration and unforgettable experiences. A place for magic and wonder. A place that could be a living memorial to peace. A tall order by any standards. But not an unattainable one with the right support. At first, Mrs. Chandler enlisted her closest friends and family. As time passed, she brought in more friends and those friends brought in an even greater number of friends, adding rings and pillars of support. After more than a decade, something truly special had happened. Mrs. Chandler had gained the commitment of the entire community. It was then that The Music Center opened its doors. Over the last fifty years, The Music Center has brought countless great artists and one-of-a-kind performances to the community. It has opened the minds and expanded the horizons of millions of students. And it has been distinguished as one of the most highly regarded performing arts centers in the country and the center of cultural life in Los Angeles. The legacy that Mrs. Chandler created is not only ours to enjoy, it is also ours to preserve for the next generation. We must carry on her spirit of philanthropy to ensure that Los Angeles will continue to be an epicenter of creativity and that future citizens will experience the most compelling and highest quality cultural engagements. A meaningful way to ensure The Music Center’s future is through a legacy gift. The Dorothy B. Chandler Legacy Society honors and recognizes individuals who express their commitment to the arts through endowment and planned giving. Legacy gifts will ensure The Music Center will continue to be a cultural leader and provide the finest arts experiences in the nation for our community. We invite you to join Mrs. Chandler’s ever growing circle of friends and establish your own legacy at The Music Center. Together we can provide a lasting heritage for generations to come. 20 “I felt that through my bequest, I could make a difference. I could make an impact on the future in a significant and permanent way.” – David Conlon WE’D LIKE TO HEAR FROM YOU! If you have made a provision for The Music Center in your estate plans or would like to learn more about legacy giving, please contact Cheryl Brown at (213) 972-3316. In fact, thanks to Center Dance Arts, whose members are some of Los Angeles’ most passionate dance lovers, the audience for this celebration event will experience a number of “Music Center firsts.” Dancers from L.A. Dance Project rehearse a new piece by Justin Peck with lead support from Center Dance Arts. In a unique collaboration, Dance at The Music Center is presenting a world premiere of Peck’s work, performed live by L.A. Dance Project on the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion stage to a first-ever simulcast of the Los Angeles Philharmonic from Walt Disney Concert Hall. In a performance that unites two of the four Music Center theatres in celebrating the anniversary, the orchestra, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, will perform Helix, composed by Los Angeles Philharmonic Conductor Laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen. A lauded composer and world-renowned conductor, Salonen made his debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1992 on the stage of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and was the last to conduct the Los Angeles Philharmonic there in 2003 before the orchestra moved to The Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall. This is the first time that a work by Peck, recently named resident choreographer for New York City Ballet, and a Southern California native, is appearing at The Music Center. Catharine Soros, president of Center Dance Arts, says the organization’s role in helping commission new works fits well within its mission to 22 ensure The Music Center is home to the finest dance presentations. “One of the most exciting aspects of Los Angeles’ emergence as a performing arts town is that there are no walls up, not between dance companies and not between art forms. It’s because of that openness that everyone in Los Angeles can experience the best of the best, be it local, national or international talent,” Soros said. “Thanks to Glorya Kaufman, without whom none of this would be possible, along with leadership from the Center Dance Arts Board of Directors, we are experiencing a true renaissance in presenting the finest quality dance programming here at The Music Center,” she explained. Working closely with Center Dance Arts, Dance at The Music Center helped launch L.A. Dance Project by commissioning a piece that the company premiered at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in September 2012. The company’s founder and artistic director, Benjamin Millepied, who was recently named artistic director of the Paris Opera Ballet, personally selected Peck for the Los Angeles Philharmonic collaboration, and Soros is thrilled with the outcome, explaining that the choreography “…is upbeat, highly energetic, approachable and utterly fun, and serves as a real love letter to The Music Center.” Peck, who is excited to see his work appear at The Music Center, suggests he was inspired by the Salonen composition, offering that the dance itself takes on the shape of a helix, building slowly and then eventually spiraling out of control. “It was a bit of a puzzle to determine the piece of music that would be the right one, something that not only fits the occasion, but that would also support a simulcast,” he said. “It’s a challenging orchestral work, but the dancers are well suited to move in relation to it. The outcome is complex,” he offers, “with the dancers responding in reflective ways.” The Music Center Vice President of Programming Renae Williams Niles, is proud of the outcome of the collaboration. “This piece needed to be significant, both to salute The Music Center’s 50th anniversary, as well as to reinforce the leadership role of our dance series and the world-class caliber of the orchestra,” Williams Niles explained. “Not only is this a forward-thinking approach, with the help of technology no one could have dreamed of fifty years ago, but it is also exuberant, energetic and just the kind of choreography we needed it to be.” Center Dance Arts gratefully acknowledges lead support in honor of The Music Center’s 50th Anniversary from: Susan Baumgarten Walter and Ruth Chameides Morris and Natalie Darnov Joan Herman and Richard Rasiej Liz Levitt Hirsch Jane Jelenko and Bill Norris Carol and Patrick Kinsella Anita Mann Kohl and Allen Kohl Catharine and Jeffrey Soros Sutton and Christian Stracke Sue Tsao THE MUSIC CENTER MC50_GALA_PROG_1214.indd 22 11/24/14 11:53 AM THE MUSIC CENTER’S SUPPORTERS ANNUAL FUND Believing in the transformative power of the arts, The Music Center Annual Fund directly supports: ARTS EDUCATION The Music Center has one of the largest arts education programs in the nation.
