The Visionary Bowling Products/TCBA National Playoff Tournament was held May
18-20 at AMF Alpha and AMF Clearlake in Houston, TX. 169 teams from six states
participated in the tournament.
In the women’s division, Horizon Pro Shop, Lady Horizon from Houston claimed
the title. Their trip to the title started with their first game being a win. Member
Tangela Doaks rolled a perfect 300 to start the finals, and the team rolled a 1238
scratch. In their second game they faced last year’s champions, Lusha’a Ladies
which ended in their first defeat in the finals, but held on to the lead. They got back
in the winning column with a win in their third game. The fourth game was no different posting their third win in four games. The fifth game was close, but they
posted their second loss in the finals. The sixth game found them posting their
fourth win and left them with a commanding 300 point lead going to the last two
games. The team coasted to victory with wins in the seventh and eighth games.
The Horizon Pro Shop, Lady Horizon members are Angela Hysaw, Sandra White,
Donna Brown, June Lawson, Tangela Doakes, Nikki Battistoni, Lakesha Crawford,
and Yolanda Johnson.
In the men’s division, Scully’s II from Corpus Christi was this year’s champions.
The team from Scully’s II came all the way from the Wildcard squads. What a way
to finish the weekend. This puts to rest the thought that bowling as a wildcard team
leaves you no chance to win the tournament. Scully’s trip to the championship included four additional games in the wildcard squad where they finished first in their
squad. After bowling in the qualifying and semi finals they finished seventh overall.
In game one of the finals, they pulled out their first victory. Game two also ended in
victory, leaving the team in first place in the finals. Game three did not fare as well
as the first two, their first loss, moving the team to fifth. Game four was another
win and total pins moved them up three spots, to second place. They loss game five,
but the team in first place posted a score low enough for Scully’s to regain first place
by 40 pins. Scully’s II won games seven and eight, extending their lead to 403 pins
and a championship.
Members of the winning team, Scully’s II include Henry Lai, Joshua Munoz, Chuck
Drillen, Daniel Norval, and Matt Drillen. Five bowlers from start to finish. Jessie
Meier was also a member of the team that could not attend. Boy did he miss out on
the fun.
Thanks to our host centers, AMF Alpha and AMF Clearlake for providing conditions and a staff that was second to none.

Welcome back to a
new season of
TCBA!
Welcome back to a new season of TCBA.
There is a lot of information in this issue, so you may want to take it home
and review it. We will always print the
first issue of the newsletter, but emailing
the issues went well last year. Send your
email address to the TCBA and we will
add you to our news letter mailer. Printing and mailing cost have soared, and
email is becoming the method of choice.
The weekend started with the Delegates
meeting on Friday morning at the Hilton Hotel in Clearlake. Betty Shields
said an opening prayer, as has been customary in our Delegates meeting. The
meeting started with something that has
been feared would happen eventually.
There were no bids for the All Star or
National Playoffs. My thoughts on this
was read in a letter that I prepared for
the delegates. A copy of this letter is in
this issue. The National awards were
announced. This being an election year,
the Executive board was re-elected without opposition.
After the joint meeting, the women voted on their proposed rule change. The
delegates after some discussion approved
the raising of the minimum average to
165 for bowlers without verifiable averages and also voted to add 15 pins to
bowlers joining with only a sport average.
The men had one proposed rule changes,
which was defeated by majority vote.
As usual I cannot say enough about the
tournament staff. Every tournament
that we have is exceeded by their efforts
at the next. I could not ask for a better
group.
The Visionary ball proposal was a mild
success. The bowlers received 518 balls
due to their participation in the program. Visionary added $5,180.00 to the
national prize fund. Many more of the
TCBA bowlers got a chance to get the
Classic at the tournament. Jason and
Willie were on hand to give bowlers a
chance to test the balls at the tournament. A majority of the championship
teams members selected the Classic as
the ball they chose from Visionary for
winning the tournament.
After the response from the bowlers at
the National Playoffs about the ball,
Jason and I agreed that we will do the
ball proposal again this year. He will
offer the bowlers a choice of the
“Classic” or the new “Classic Pearl.”
The cost will be the same as last year,
$1.00 per game or $108.00 for the year.
Hopefully our participation level will be
one that exceeds the levels of last year.
Let’s show our support and make it past
50%.
Apologies Are In Order
The TCBA would like to extend a
humble apology to the Men’s National Championship team, Scully’s II.
The printed version of the TCBA
yearbook inadvertently left last
years members names under the picture of the team. Also the dates for
the National Playoffs in May are incorrect in the printed version. The
electronic version on our website has
been corrected.

Letter to TCBA Bowlers
Let me start by saying that the TCBA is the most exciting and competitive venture that I have ever participated in. Every year the bowlers
say they can’t wait for next season to start. The concept of this league
gives the bowlers a true view of their abilities as it covers a vast number
of conditions.
Over the past several years the TCBA has experienced a decline in the
number of teams bowling in the league. There are many factors that
contribute to this decline. The current state of the economy is playing
the largest factor, and the low number of bowlers these days does not
help. One of the biggest advertising tools for any league is word of
mouth. I feel we are lacking in this department. Unlike most leagues,
we do not have the luxury of a league coordinator, working at a bowling
center, whose main job is to find bowlers for the league. Over my two
years as president, I have spoken to many current bowlers in the TCBA.
To my dismay, I am hearing a very similar pattern to the conversations. When speaking about tournaments, promotions, or our national
sponsor Visionary, I get the feeling that I am speaking to someone that
I am trying to recruit for the league. Visionary Bowling Products is
currently helping us spread the word about the TCBA. I have given
them flyers to pass out explaining the TCBA to areas that the TCBA
does not bowl.
For the first time in TCBA history, there were no centers bidding
for the All Star (October 2013) or the National Playoff (May
2014) tournaments. This disinterest is firmly on the lack of participation from the league as a whole. At our last All Star tournament, we had a total of 135 individual bowlers participate.
That’s less than 10% of the league. We have over 1800 bowlers,
nationwide. According to the bowlers present at the tournament,
the lack of a large prize fund was to blame. I can understand the
frustration of the bowlers not to want to support the tournament
without a guaranteed prize fund, but our tournament is entry
driven. The more that bowl, the more money goes in the prize
fund.
Visionary Bowling Products came up with a brilliant idea, help
them help us get money to our tournaments. One dollar per game
during the regular season, for a premium bowling ball, and TCBA
gets approximately $40,000.00 added to the tournament prize
funds. Sounds like a no brainer, not quite. Participation was
21% of the entire national league. Of the over 1800 bowlers, 518
supported the promotion. I would like to thank all of the bowlers
that participated in the ball promotion. Even though we did not
get to the participation level hoped for, Visionary still graciously
put over $5,000.00 in the playoff prize fund. Had there been
more participation, perhaps there would have been some for the
All Star tournament. By the way, several 300 games have
already been thrown with “The Classic”.
With the rising cost of transportation, hotels, flights, and all other expenses that go along with traveling, perhaps it’s time to
make a change in the way TCBA holds the tournaments. About
seven years ago the delegates voted in the possibility of Regional
Wildcard Tournaments. We had a vision that one day the TCBA
would outgrow the Wildcard tournament at the national playoff
tournament. We believe that time has arrived, only for a different reason, economics. With regional wildcard tournaments, all
teams going to the National playoff tournament will cash.
This also opens the door to holding the TCBA All Star tournament at the same time as the National Playoff tournament. To
hold both tournaments on the same weekend would require some
changes to the format of the All Star tournament. We would
hold the All Star tournament with one or two (three game) squad
Thursday evening and three, (three game) squads Friday, with
stepladder finals on Friday night. This scenario would I feel enhance the entries to the All Star tournament, as bowlers that
normally do not attend the All Star tournament, being in October, would now bowl in the All Star.
When I talked about the two tournament concept to most bowlers, they said that traveling twice a year was too costly, and the
main reason they did not bowl in the All Star. But, since they
were guaranteed to cash at the Playoff tournament, they would
bowl in the All Star also.

Page 6
TCBA News
Letter to TCBA Bowlers From Page 5
A regional wildcard tournament schedule would have to be laid out
in such a manner that multiple regions would combine for the tournament. This is something that we will have to work out, as some
regions are not near any other regions and others are clustered in
one area. The one team in a fixed number of teams to advance to
the qualifying tournament has been a successful model for most
tournaments.
The Playoff Tournament format would also have to change, but
not much. We would go from five games to four, and the semifinals from four games to three. The finals format would remain
the same. We are also thinking of moving the tournament to the
second week of June. This would clear the time for graduations, as
many teams in the past have had to miss the tournament for this
reason.
We feel that this would be an attractive prospect for bowling centers. With guaranteed teams for the Playoffs and a good potential
for the All Star tournament as well.
What we do now:
Travel and hotel expenses for Thursday to Sunday in October (kids
still in school)
Travel and hotel expenses for Thursday to Sunday in May (kids still
in school or graduating)
Proposed:
Travel and hotel expenses for Thursday to Sunday in June
(summer vacation for family)
Please give this some thought, as the TCBA tournaments are in
jeopardy.
