WOMAN'S CLUB
November 2012
"The object and purpose for which this corporation is formed are as
follows, to-wit: For educational purposes and especially to promote
literature, science and art and the study thereof, and general
intellectual culture".
President’s Letter
Dear Fellow Members,
I have wonderful news to report. Since the printing of the 2011-2012
Yearbook we have added 12 new members! Under the outstanding
leadership of our Vice President of Membership, Anne von der Heydt,
along with her hard-working committee, we have welcomed 12
intelligent, interesting, and enthusiastic women to our Club.
Let’s continue this trend of inviting exceptional women such as you and
your friends to join our Club and enjoy the many diverse programs and
fun events. The Saint Louis Woman’s Club is an extraordinary place and
we want to continue to grow our membership!
In addition to the unique women at our Club, we have competent and
dedicated staff members. General Manager Sheri Gwinnup oversees our
events and staff with grace and careful attention to detail. Executive
Chef Leon Dubinovskiy is in his 18th year with us and continues to create delicious and delectable menus for
us to enjoy. Susan Taylor is our Banquet Supervisor and does an excellent job overseeing the table and bar
service. Debbie Thomas, our housekeeper, makes sure that the Club House is sparkling and ready for daily
use. Elysée Mizaire is the jack-of-all-trades setting up for events, making general house repairs, and helping
in the kitchen as needed. Tina Holland keeps our records and books with an eye for detail and numbers.
Ashley Massey is our Sous-Chef helping Chef Leon with the many events, programs, and lunches.
Take advantage of our remarkable staff, facility and programs by encouraging additional friends to join us.
Please let us know how we can help.
See you at The Club!
Warmly,
Carolyn G. Farrell

Join us for a glimpse into the
wonderful world of ballet with
Gen Horiuchi, Artistic Director
of the Saint Louis Ballet.
Members of the Company will
perform Divertimento #15,
choreographed by George
Balanchine.
A formidable ballet dancer in his own right, Mr. Horiuchi
became artistic director of Saint Louis Ballet in 2000 and has
created a dozen original works for the company. His
international reputation with major choreographers throughout
the world has led to the presentations of many other original
works to Saint Louis Ballet dancers and St. Louis audiences.
Mr. Horiuchi, originally from Tokyo, Japan, moved to the
United States after winning the Prix de Lausanne, the
international ballet competition in Switzerland in 1980 and
receiving a scholarship to study at the School of American
Ballet. In 1982, George Balanchine invited him to join the
New York City Ballet, where he became a Principal Dancer in
1989. Among the many ballets he performed with New York
City Ballet, the role of Mercury in the ballet Persephone was
created for Mr. Horiuchi by George Balanchine, as well as the
ballets Eight More and Les Gentilhommes by Peter Martins.
Most recently in 2010 he founded Gen Horiuchi's Ballet USA,
which presents his works in Japan. Mr. Horiuchi will speak to
us about his background and this season's performances.

SLWC Semi-Annual Meeting
“Kate Howard Day”
Please join us at our Semi-Annual meeting to catch up on all that is happening at your Club.
The Board of Governors and their committees have been hard at work enriching our lives at
The Saint Louis Woman’s Club. You won’t want to miss their reports!
At this meeting we celebrate Kate Howard, who was appointed chairman of the building
committee in 1910, and oversaw the move to our present location in late 1911. She is best
known for her generous donation of $48,500 to retire the debt incurred from the first
renovation at 4600 Lindell Boulevard. Her portrait hangs above the fireplace in The World’s
Fair Room.

Membership Matters
The Membership Committee hosted a wonderful
Champagne Reception for Prospective Members
on September 25, 2012. Chef Leon presented a
beautiful and delicious hors d’oeuvre table and
the house was sparkling. Seven Prospective
Members and one former member attended.
Laura Shaughnessy and Marguerite Garrick led
house tours for the group.
On November 29 the Membership Committee
will be hosting a Prospective Member Coffee.
The coffee will begin at 10:00 a.m. and last until
11:30 a.m. The format will be the same as our
other coffees; we will have social time for half
an hour or so, then members will talk about Club
activities followed by a tour of our beautiful
clubhouse. The house will look especially
festive decorated for Christmas and who can
pass up Chef Leon's Christmas cookies!
