NE W TO UR AP P Cornelius Vanderbilt II T he B reakers 1895 National Historic Landmark The Breakers is a surviving jewel of the New York Central Railroad fortune, making a statement about the global sensibilities of the Vanderbilt family. The 70-room summer estate of Cornelius Vanderbilt II includes a two and a half story high Great Hall and a Morning Room adorned with platinum leaf wall panels. Its interiors feature rare marble, alabaster, and gilded woods throughout. There’s more to the Newport Mansions story. So technologically advanced for its time it appeared to work “as if by magic,” it also houses monumental art works, including wall-sized Venetian paintings, Chinese lacquer panels and tapestries. House guest Baroness Von Boecklin, 1938 Dolphins under the staircase & Dragons in the dining room The Breakers Family Tour Where you can hear a talking house and see a flying dragon. This imaginative audio tour brings the great house to life for visitors of all ages. “My youngest was listening to the “family” version & she was smiling & chuckling, so I switched to the family tour. Very well done and funny! I enjoyed it more than the adult version!” Trip Advisor Traveler Review NE W TO UR AP P H unter H ouse c. 1748 National Historic Landmark Pass through the front door of Hunter House and you step back into Newport’s 18th-century Golden Age, the era before the American Revolution. It was the home of a merchant, ship owner and colonial deputy, and later became the Revolutionary War headquarters of the French Navy. You’ll see up close a great collection of exquisite colonial furniture, created by legendary Newport craftsmen like the Townsends and Goddards. Deborah Malbone Hunter with daughter Eliza www. New p ortMans i o ns .org • 401.847.1000 “We learned the history of this wonderfully restored Victorian. I really enjoyed seeing the architectural “tricks” they employed to make the house appear even grander than it was…. And don’t forget to check out the trees as you exit..” Trip Advisor Traveler Review Chateau-sur-Mer 1852 National Historic Landmark A product of the America-China Trade and one of America’s great Victorian houses, Chateau-sur-Mer was home to three generations of the Wetmore family. You’ll see hand-carved Italian woodwork, Chinese porcelains, Egyptian and Japanese Revival stenciled wallpapers, and rare trees from as far away as Mongolia. Senator Wetmore with daughter Annie I saac B ell H ouse 1883 National Historic Landmark The Isaac Bell House is a masterpiece of the American Shingle Style featuring Arts and Crafts interiors, Japanese-inspired columns, and a sweeping open floor plan. Together with Kingscote, these two picturesque cottages illustrate Newport’s evolution as a premier place for great design, fine living and the creation of a distinctly American style of architecture. www. Breathtaking architecture and design. I could have stayed there all day. The view is AMAZING … A definite must see!” Trip Advisor Traveler Review TO NEW UR A • PP Sta & rt AU M D ay IO 21 M arble H ouse 1892 National Historic Landmark Created by Alva Vanderbilt and Richard Morris Hunt and inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles, Marble House contains 500,000 cubic feet of marble. Intended as an ultimate statement of Gilded Age privilege, only a few years later it hosted Alva’s “Votes for Women” rallies on the back lawn. Hear the words of Alva Vanderbilt, her daughter Consuelo and many more, brought to life in the award-winning audio tour. See and hear how the Duke of Marlborough proposed to Consuelo Vanderbilt, his American princess. Vanderbilt family, 1880 “Romantically beautiful…Rosecliff would be what I would imagine most little girls would dream as their ideal wedding location. It is as perfect as it can get....” Trip Advisor Traveler Review O DI y 21 U A a & M P tart P A S • EW UR N O T R osecliff 1902 The audio tour brings Rosecliff’s history and romance to life with never-before-told stories and first person remembrances of its colorful families. From Tessie Oelrichs, who built this fantasy in terra cotta, to the Monroes of New Orleans, the last family to call Rosecliff home, you’ll discover the very human story of Newport’s great party house. Private Events Glistening white and boasting ocean views, Rosecliff provides the perfect backdrop for any special occasion. Whether planning a corporate event or grand wedding, this Gilded Age masterpiece is the ideal setting. Splendor at Sea: The Golden Age of Steam Yachting in America R osecliff E xhibition M ay 21 - J anuary 1, 2017 The advent of private steam yachts in America brought with it a new social schedule as industrial tycoons took to pleasure cruising as never before. Much like the city mansions and summer cottages of the Gilded Age elite, these floating palaces quickly became status markers for the men who used conspicuous consumption as their standard of measure. New p ortM a ns i o ns .org • 401.847.100 0 “A lesson in preservation…What pleases me as a lover of history is the painstaking efforts taken by the Preservation Society to restore, preserve and present history to the present generation! I would unhesitatingly recommend the measures taken by this ‘Preservation Society’ as a model.” Trip Advisor Traveler Review K ingscote 1841 National Historic Landmark Built in 1841 for Georgia plantation owner George Noble Jones and rebuilt for the King family in 1881, Kingscote still possesses original rooms from each era. At the center is one of America’s greatest dining rooms, with Tiffany glass and a unique cork ceiling. Its furnishings reflect the King family’s success as China Trade merchants, with rare furniture, silver collections and Chinese decorative arts. C hepstow 1861 Gwendolen King’s wedding, 1901 This charming Italianate-style cottage was designed by Newport architect George Champlin Mason. Today it reflects the mid20th-century style of its last owner, Alletta Morris McBean, a descendant of Lewis Morris III, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The house contains original family furnishings, and a collection of important 19th-century American paintings, including Hudson River landscapes. “Hidden gem....Wonderful!.” Trip Advisor Traveler Review Green Animals Topiary Garden c. 1860 A lion, a camel, a bear, oh my! These and dozens of other fanciful animals, a sailing ship, teacups, spirals and other geometric shapes sculpted from living plants populate one of the oldest topiary gardens in North America. The Brayton family home is located on the grounds of Green Animals. A self-guided tour of the house is included with your admission. T he H istoric G ardens and A rboretum of the N ewport M ansions ® Newport was renowned in the 18th century as the “Eden of America.” The properties of the Preservation Society contain The Elms gardens and trees that together comprise one of the most important arboretums in New England.
