We have come from two people and grew into a company of over 140 employees. We have been a Partnership, a C corporation, and an S corporation. I have survived 5 partners and now hope that finally a singular vision and purpose will guide the company and its employees to individual and corporate success. For me, much satisfaction has come from the development of innovative products and my name on several patents collaborated with many fine employees. The cast of characters in product development has changed over the years, but that keen desire to be innovative and solve problems remains constant. 1 SALCO Some of the uniqueness and passion I still experience at Salco Products, internally and externally, to exceed expectations is what keeps me going. Being competitive, aggressive, to desire growth and excel is a common thread in a Salco Products employee. I would hope some of that comes from the owner. So we push on with new ventures, products, and opportunities before us. We use a business marketing model which has proven quite successful; we provide excellent service to niche product market/segments. Our employees have a bright future and I am constantly aware that decisions made, especially the ones I make, impact the livelihood of so many, my employees, our fabulous customers, and our great vendor base. My thanks to all of the loyal and dedicated customers, vendors, and employees of Salco Products that have made these thirty years a success. Special thanks to my wife, daughters, and dogs. Keep it rollin! Dave Oestermeyer President 2 OUR Committed to Innovation Recognizing a need, solving a problem, finding a solution, and then turning what might seem impossible into possible; these are the concepts on which Salco was fashioned thirty years ago. Innovation continues the trend toward new products and services to meet the ever growing and changing needs among our customers. Change is constant…Innovation is our strength. What We Do Founded thirty years ago, Salco Products was born from the idea of replacing theft prone outlet caps with ones made from plastic at a quarter of the cost. From these beginnings, Salco went on to become an innovator in the railcar industry by developing the vented hatch cover for plastic resin shippers. Through the years, Salco Products began providing service throughout the shipping community, which today includes everything from tank car components to parts for trucking and intermodal containers. Salco is proud to be a dependable part supplier to its varied customer base that operates at chemical plant sites, freight car manufacturers, and the rail repair network in North America. 3 Capabilities: New Technology Innovation, ideas, and a can-do attitude is what creates and drives new technology. Fracking is the procedure of creating fractures in rocks and rock formations by injecting fluid into cracks to force them open. This allows oil and gas to flow out of the formation and into the well where it can be extracted. Who would think that the definition above would drive need for two different kinds of technology, welding plastic (our Hazarsolve line) and Transloading (moving fluids)? We create and design our fluid transload units and components to serve our customer’s needs. The needs and growth of the crude oil market created the basic need for our Hazarsolve line. Innovation has made it the “must have” line, providing durable and long lasting solutions for the acid and fracking industries. 4 En gi n e e r D e s i gn B ui l d Cre ate Co o p e rate Co lla b e rate Te s t Tri a l S e r v i ce D e l i ve r y Fi eld As s e m b l y Success Josh Chesser My career at Salco Products began in Operations in 1992. Back then we only sold hopper car parts and did not ship quantities of vented hatch covers greater than four pieces. Many years later, with parts and services to cover all areas of the freight transportation industry, Salco is more successful than ever. What has inspired me the most over the years has been our employees’ commitment to delivering the highest quality products and services to our customers. I have seen Salco’s employees go to great lengths to ensure that our customers are delivered a valuable product worthy of the cost, endlessly attentive to every detail down to the label on the package. I have had the honor of working with women and men who have selflessly sacrificed time with their families to make sure that a customer’s needs have been met. I believe we have the greatest employees in the world. I believe we deliver some of the best products in our industries, and I see today first hand that our customers have appreciated that commitment for the last thirty years. I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all of Salco’s employees who have worked so hard to make that commitment the foundation of the valuable relationships we hold with our customers. I would also like to extend an equally as important thank you to our customers whose loyalty and continued business for the past thirty years has made us who we are today. Josh Chesser VP of Sales & Marketing Services “I believe we have the greatest employees in the world.” 5 Scott Swanson I had some hesitation joining a company where there were only 30 employees which basically survived on one product line with no long term revenue generating contracts. However, after jumping on board what I found was an aggressive, innovative, and responsive company. One focused on its employees, customers, and vendors. Our focus has always been to listen to our customers and respond to their needs. Whether it is developing a new part with them to solve a problem, or shipping an emergency order when the phone call comes late in the day. One of the things I cherish most is how we have been able to diversify our customer base and our product line by listening and responding. I greatly value our long term customers that have partnered with us for decades and keep coming back. I love that we continue to find new customers to foster these same relationships. With our business philosophy, it takes a special kind of person to work at Salco Products. Employees are not co-workers, but truly a team of players executing their roles together for a common cause. Players that can think fast, react fast, and spin on a dime. Players that don’t just show up to play the game to collect a paycheck, but players that show up to win championships. I am proud that we are still the same company I joined all those years ago and that our growth hasn’t changed our culture. To see how this company started and where we are today is impressive… and to envision where we are going in the future is absolutely inspiring. Scott Swanson VP of Sales & Texas Operations “To see how this company started and where we are today is impressive...” 6 HISTORY OF SALCO - THE BEGINNING It all began in Oak Lawn, IL in a garage with an idea to meet a need to create something better. Salco recognized a niche to assist in supplying outlet caps in a market that needed a solution to limit theft of valuable steel components. By supplying a plastic outlet cap that was not so attractive to an “alternate” market, Salco quickly became a valued part and solution provider. 7 HOW WE STARTED The beginning focus was to supply railcar repair components to customers owning or leasing rail cars. The plastic outlet cap is where it all started. The industry needed a solution to limit the theft of valuable steel outlet caps. Salco began offering plastic outlet caps. Then another thought came about, could we help protect our customers equipment from expensive repairs due to implosion? The vented hatch cover solved implosion costs and hazards in the industry. Thus it began, and we have never looked back. WHERE WE ARE TODAY Starting with 2 employees and a very small space, and growing into 150 employees and 135,000 square feet, Salco has recently increased their foot print to make room for the new ventures serving the oil, gas, and chemical industries while serving customers we never thought we would meet. At Salco, we accomplish this by combining equipment, technology, With two locations in Lemont, IL and Tomball, TX, we ideas, innovation, and creativity to deliver design, build, assemble, and distribute over 26,000 the smallest of fittings and components component parts to meet repair needs and keep your to the largest transloaders to be shipped fleet running safely and on time. to an oil field. 8 Our Journey Here is a look at our growth over the past 30 years, from incorporation in 1983 to +50 million in revenue in 2013. 2 Ex in r a ste ad 19 Sal 19 92 -19 Wid 95 of o espre a u d cov r ve n com loa ers, a ted a mer n d c Pur ing/u d beg nd no ial ac cep n c n a h -v n lo a bu sin sed g adin supp ented tanc ess ate g ad ly o hat e . f a rec c on pters tank c h dit . a r ion ing 19 88 19 85 -19 De 89 vel and opm mo com ent o ldin me f g o rcial vente per d s atio ales, hatc b h ns in h egan cove i ous nje r ctio e. n -19 Est 86 a in G blish ulf ed p Co ast resen . ce 19 19 86 83 Inc orp ora ted . 19 84 -19 Mo 87 l d e no n-v d and ent ed sold fi hat r ch st cov ers . Alex Degutis VP of Business Development “Together we have worked hard to become the most innovative railcar parts supply company in the industry.” 11 David Clauter I have been at Salco Products for half of the 30 years we are now celebrating. I came to Salco out of a job, due to plant relocation. I started in the Accounts Payable department. 15 years later I am the VP of Finance & Illinois Operations. Salco hired me on the recommendation of an existing employee. Relying on employee references and promoting from within are Salco traditions which promote an atmosphere of family and a sense of combined purpose. This “can do” culture makes Salco the place to turn, whether customers are looking for a new solution or just immediate response. As we enter the next 30 years, I am excited to see the new areas of opportunity we are exploring and look forward to continuing the “one stop shopping” option we provide. Thanks to all of our dedicated employees who make coming to work a pleasure. Also, much gratitude to both our long term and new customers who have found Salco Products the place to go when you need it done right and done fast. David E. Clauter VP of Finance & IL Operations “I am excited to see the new areas of opportunity we are exploring...” 12 13 30 THE PEOPLE Salco Employees Our employees are a tight-knit, hard working group that has pulled together as a team to exceed quality standards. The dedication and commitment of this group is second to none and we are proud to have them exemplify Salco’s quality standards and mission statement every day. The family connections are more than just a team; many employees have started here and invited their family members to come along. There is more than one generation of families that contribute to Salco’s success. Many employees began their careers here, and continue to dedicate their commitment to Salco and its customers 20 years later. Tomball, Texas Lemont, Illinois 14 Brian Putnam As I reflect back on the last 24 years of my employment many things have changed at Salco Products. We used to mold our own parts and our operations and warehouse were configured in two small buildings in Romeoville, Illinois as well as a small operation in Tomball, Texas. We outgrew those locations and moved to Lemont, Illinois and in Texas moved from Industry Lane to the Huffsmith Kohrville location, which increased our indoor and outdoor space ten fold. These moves were made to allow Salco to further expand and grow in order to adapt to the changing marketplace we serve. All the while, we were developing new innovative parts and hiring various skilled employees to help support the growth. There are many key attributes to this success. Our people, our vendors, our customers, but the single most important is our leadership. Our fearless leader, Mr. Oestermeyer has the vision and discipline to steer our course. We have done a lot of good things in our last 30 years. We have made many great strides in our vendor development, product development, market development, and personnel development that are the key ingredients of Salco’s core. I often refer to the Salco family of employees as a finely tuned engine and our number one asset. We have developed this engine over the last three decades to allow it to support the markets we serve today. We have to rely on the vision of our leadership to determine how we maintain, improve, and utilize our most valuable asset. I look forward to the next 30 years and would only hope in 2043 we look back and appreciate all the hard work that was done to allow everyone involved the ability to participate in the changes that happen to make this company stronger and better and in the end able to achieve even greater successes than the first 30 years in business. “I often refer to the Salco family of employees as a finely tuned engine and our number one asset.” Brian Putnam VP of Product Management 15 DEDICATION E X C E L L E N T WO R K Do what our customers need. Do it when they need it. Do it right. Salco Products was a company founded on a single product to solve 1 problem in 1 industry. We are proud to say we have grown to build solutions to solve all types of problems in additional industries. Our bussiness began in rail and has grown to encompass trucks, transportation, chemicals, crude oil, and several other industries that needed our creativity, ideas, and problem solving skills. At Salco Products we create, market, and design solutions all of the time to meet your needs and the daily and ever-changing demands of growing industries. 16 CRAWFISH A Salco Tradition Laissez les Bons Temps Rouler! (Let the Good Times Roll!) This is the phrase that has kicked off the Salco Annual Crawfish Boil since 1990. What started as a small get together between neighboring companies has turned into a great annual tradition celebrating our appreciation for our customers. It is a time-honored tradition we look forward to continuing for another 30 years. 17 Great Food, Great People The long-established tradition of Texas Cookin’ 1 Part Crawfish Boil 1 Part Valued Customer 1 Part Salco Employee the crawfish boil brings together amazing people, great food and results in many good times shared by all. OUR VENDORS Salco has been fortunate to have vendors that are as committed to our business and customers as we are. Our vendors have supported us since the beginning, and 30 years later we appreciate their commitment to our growth and expansion. Their willingness and participation in helping our growth into new product lines and industries has been invaluable. We appreciate these relationships and value their support. 19 OUR CUSTOMERS “Every company’s greatest assets are it’s customers, because without customers there is no company...” ~ Louis V.
