Students Learn Compassion By Serving
AUTO HOME H E A LT H LIFE BUSINESS SPRING 2015 Students at McLoghlin Middle School adopted baby Noah James, who has serious kidney problems, as their sparrow. Students Learn Compassion By Serving Since 1995, Sparrow Clubs has offered financial and emotional support for families with critically ill children by matching them with the charitable service of community kids. “I like to tell people that Sparrow Clubs is not a fundraising organization,” says Matt Sampson, Sparrow Clubs’ Oregon director. “It is a service learning organization.” “If we made money the main focus, then many kids would not be able to help,” Matt explains. “But by focusing on community service, everyone is able to contribute.” He says that service can be as simple as raking a neighbor’s leaves or as organized as volunteering as a group at a food bank. “Our goal is to change youth culture, to change kids from the inside out by inspiring them to serve others.” “Even after they have met their goal, many kids want to keep doing the service,” says Matt. “Kids are asked to raise $2,500 through service, but schools typically raise between $5,000 and $9,000 for their Sparrow by continuing to raise funds after the service money is earned.” This school year, 17 local children will have benefitted from Sparrow Clubs. One of them is Noah James, a Central Point baby born with serious kidney problems. McLoughlin Middle School adopted Noah as its “sparrow,” and PayneWest is sponsoring the students’ efforts. Students document their service hours and their thoughts about community service. They earn $10 per service hour for service and can acquire up to 256 hours as a school. C L I E N T S | In addition to corporate sponsorships, Sparrow Clubs holds a fall fundraiser, Dancing with the Rogue Valley Stars, and hosts a Wings of Hope luncheon in May. Salon Team Gives Back To Their Community For Christina Apodaca, owner of Cielo Salon in Medford, success has everything to do with unique and extraordinary. Since 2005, the salon has brought a level of service that’s usually only seen in big cities. “I knew that my concept needed to be unique to the region,” explains Christina. “My mission was to bring a level of service and a salon environment that did not exist in our area.” Cielo Salon offers a full menu of hair care, manicure and pedicure services, as well as skin care and massage treatments. The salon also features grooming and barbering services for male clients in its traditional “guys only” barbershop environment, called Guapos Barber. “The men love it,” she adds. The salon is active in fundraising events for programs and organizations that work with at-risk and homeless youth. “The Cielo Artistic Team has participated in several events where they have coordinated the hair, makeup, wardrobe and photo shoot activities for these events,” explains Christina. For example, during their 4-year participation with the Southern Oregon’s Got Talent fundraiser for CASA, over $100,000 was raised. “This has been extremely rewarding to the personal lives of our team members,” she says. “I am very excited and proud of the reputation that Cielo Salon has gained in the community,” says Christina. “One of the most important relationships in business is between a business owner and their insurance agent. I have been very fortunate to connect with Rob Swallow and PayneWest Insurance. His knowledge and attention to every detail of my insurance needs provide me with a tremendous amount of peace of mind.” To find out more about Cielo Salon’s unique services, visit www.cielosalon.com. “My mission was to bring a level of service and a salon environment that did not exist in our area.” A U T O L I F E | | H O M E | H E A L T H B U S I N E S S C L I E N T S | C O L L E A G U E S Soaring For Hearts & Vines | C O M M U N I T I E S by Scott Sherbourne Last summer while attending the Annual Hearts & Vines Dinner and Auction, I was lucky enough to have the winning bid for a hang gliding adventure package donated by the Rogue Valley Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association and Valley View Winery. I thought it would make a great gift and fun adventure for my upcoming wedding anniversary with my wife Christin. Vines Foundation is committed to funding communitybased youth and family programs with a focus on the elimination of domestic violence. Scott Sherbourne paraglides from the top of Woodrat Mountain. I had been hang gliding before but this was Christin’s first time. I have to admit, we were BOTH a little nervous but we had confidence in our pilots and it was a TOTALLY THRILLING experience! We went to the top of Woodrat Mountain where we caught some good updrafts, which allowed us to sail over some peaks and stay in the sky for 45 minutes. We landed at Valley View Winery. We were greeted by fellow Hearts & Vines board members and Valley View family members Mike, Robert and Denise Wisnovsky, who hosted a lovely wine tasting dinner. As a member of the Hearts & Vines board of directors, the organization is dear to my heart. The Hearts & Special thanks to Safeco, our newsletter sponsor. I hope you’ll mark your calendar for the next Hearts & Vines Dinner and Auction that will take place August 15th at the stunning Applegate vineyard. Guests will enjoy an elegant dinner featuring locally grown ingredients paired with Southern Oregon wines. After dinner, a live auction will offer exclusive art, wine, dinners, parties and travel packages. Every dollar raised from the event offers life-changing services to families victimized by domestic violence. Christin and I would love to see you there.
