INVITATION FROM THE DEAN
This year represents the 50th Anniversary for the Faculty of Dentistry and as we come toward the end of this
celebratory year I am delighted to welcome everyone to the Annual Scientific Meeting over the following
two days 24 & 25 October. A warm welcome is extended to all from the Dental community and also those
from the Anaesthetic, Neurology and Pain Management communities who may be present. I would like to
thank and congratulate Dr Gerry Cleary and his Committee on providing an excellent programme and as
usual, recruiting a diverse and most respected group of speakers from Ireland, Britain and North America.
The meeting theme is “Surgical Aspects of Dental Practice” and will have four areas of clinical focus in the
meeting sessions : Facial Pain (TMD and Trigeminal Neuralgia), Surgical and Restorative aspects of Implant
Dentistry, Sedation and Anaesthesia in Dental Practice and Dentoalveolar Surgery. The presentations will
address topic overviews, management of clinical scenarios, review of long term experience and suggestions for clinical practice.
The Faculty are pleased as always to welcome all our speakers and a particularly warm welcome for our overseas presenters. From
North America ; Dr Karel DeLeeuw Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at the Mayo Clinic discusses the surgical aspects of
Temporomandibular Disorders and also a North American perspective on Dental Anaesthesia and Sedation. Dr Steve Scrivani and Dr
Brian McGeeney both from Boston will address the aetiology, treatment and also controversial aspects of Trigeminal Neuralgia. Dr Scrivani
is a reknowned expert in Facial Pain and Dr McGeeney, originally a Medical Graduate from Dublin and at present Assistant Professor of
Neurology at Boston University with a particular interest in Headache Medicine.
Dr Tony Pogrel, Chairman of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of California San Francisco presents on the varying
outcomes of dental implant surgery and also on the importance of the maxillary sinus to the dental surgeon. Dr Leonard Kaban, Chairman
of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital Boston will provide a historical insight into the role of the dentist
in the development of general anaesthesia. The Massachusetts General is a Hospital steeped in the history of general anaesthesia. We are
delighted to welcome these eminent clinicians and as part of the Annual Scientific Meeting Honorary Fellowship of the Faculty will be
conferred on both Dr Pogrel and Dr Kaban.
Mr Steve Dover, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in Birmingham will present on the importance of autogenous bone and
alloplastic materials in implant rehabilitation, and Dr Tara Renton, Professor of Oral Surgery at Kings College Dental Institute discusses
complications related to dentoalveolar surgery and more importantly the avoidance of these complications. We are very pleased to welcome
Steve and Tara to the meeting and very much look forward to their presentations. Professor Richard Ibbetson, Dean of the Faculty of
Dentistry, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is also most welcome. Richard is the Chairman of the Intercollegiate Group on
Sedation and Anaesthesia in Dentistry and will provide a summary of the Intercollegiate guidelines in this area.
The Irish based speakers are highly respected clinicians, teachers and researchers both in Ireland and Overseas, and it a pleasure for the
Faculty to welcome them to meeting and thank them for their contribution. Dr Dermot Canavan and Dr Michael O’Sullivan will open the
meeting with a discussion of the non surgical management and the role of the occlusion in TMD. Dr Jim Meaney Consultant Radiologist
at St James Hospital Dublin has a longstanding interest in the imaging of patients with trigeminal neuralgia and will share his experience
in this area with us. Drs Peter Cowan, Gerry Cleary and Tiernan O’Brien will review scientific, surgical and restorative aspects of implant
dentistry and all most welcome and we look forward to their presentations. Dr Jan Moriarty, Consultant Anaesthetist and Professor Leo
Stassen Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon both at St James Hospital Dublin will debate differing viewpoints of sedation and
anaesthesia in dental practice. In the final session Dr Pat Cleary, Dr Anne O’Donoghue and Professor Duncan Sleeman will discuss how
endodontic surgery, periodontal surgery and oral surgery have evolved with a particular emphasis on dental practice.
These meetings cannot proceed without the generous support of many companies. The Faculty are most grateful to all our sponsors and
could I please encourage everyone attending the meeting to take some time to visit and speak with the various representatives at the stands
in the conference hall during the breaks in the Scientific Sessions.
It remains for me once again to welcome everyone who has found the time to attend the meeting and also to welcome and thank our
speakers from home and overseas..
