( Turdus pilaris.) is only a visitor here, remaining with us the winter months, and departing northwards for during about the beginning or middle of April breeding purposes This bird . SONG THRUSH. (Turdus musicus.} Common. On the 24th of May, 1862, I found an egg of this bird near Pinner Drive, perfectly spotless. REDWING. (Turdus iliacus.) This bird, like the Fieldfare, only remains with us during the winter, departing in March. BLACKBIRD. ( Turdus merula.) PARID^E. Of the seven species which compose this tribe, I have noticed five at Harrow. GREAT TITMOUSE. (Parus major.) Very common. BLUE TITMOUSE. (Parus cceruleus.) Common. COLE TITMOUSE. I (Parus ater.) found a nest of this bird in a hole in a barn, during the spring of 1862, containing young birds nearly fledged. One since 1873. Park. (R. B. H.) 142 MARSH TITMOUSE. The Whinchat, as well as the Stonechat, is very common here during the summer, and may be seen in almost favourite situation for their nests is the every field. Nightingales are very plentiful here in the summer time, and I have found several of their nests every year. BLACKCAP. (Sylvia atricapilla.} Pinner Lane, Oxhey Wood, Pretty common. To be found in most of the copses about here. GARDEN WARBLER. Occasional. etc. (Sylvia hortensis.) Harrow Weald. WHITETHROAT. (Sylvia cinerea.) Very common. LESSER WHITETHROAT. (Sylvia curruca.) Common. Nearly as common as the Greater Whitethroat. WOOD WREN. (Sylvia sibilatrix.} Rare, but occasionally met with. since 1873. None 144 WILLOW WREN. (Sylvia trochylus.} Common. CHIFF-CHAFF. Oxhey Wood, fairly (Sylvia rufa.} common. GOLDEN-CRESTED REGULUS. (Regulus cristatus.} MOTACILLTD^S. PIED WAGTAIL. (Motacilla Yarellii.} Occasional. RAY'S WAGTAIL. Near Pinner Road, one Frequently met with (Motacilla campestris.} nest, 1875. in during pairs the summer months. A N T H I D JE TREE Oxhey Wood. PIPIT. . (Anthm arboreus.} Common. MEADOW PIPIT. Very common, and (Anthus pratensis.} are caught in large numbers by the birdcatcher. ROCK PIPIT. (Anthus olscurus.) Rock Pipit was caught by the specimen of the uncertain birdcatcher here during November, 1862; being A 145 FRINGILLID^E. what kind of pipit this was, I skinned it and took some right name, it proved to be without doubt the Anthus obscurus. The Rock Pipit though common on the sea coast is very rarely seen so far inland trouble to discover as its Harrow. None since 1873. ALAUDID^E. SKY LARK. (Alauda arvensis.) Common. WOOD LARK. (Alauda arbor ea.) EMBERIZ1DJ5. COMMON BUNTING. (JEmbenza millearia.) Occasionally met with, though not BLACK-HEADED BUNTING. common. (Emberiza Schcenidus.} Common. YELLOW HAMMER. (Emberiza citrinella.) FBINGILLID.E. CHAFFINCH. (Fringilla Calebs.} BRAMBLING. (Fringilla montifring ilia.) Caught occasionally by the birdcatcher during the time. None since 1873. o flight 146 FRINGILLID^. TREE SPARROW. (Fringilla montana.} Uncommon, but seen occasionally in small flocks during the winter. HOUSE SPARROW. (Fringilla domestica.} Common. GREENFINCH. (Fringilla Moris.} Common. HAWFINCH. (Fringilla cocothraustes.} This neighbourhood seems to be rather a favourite place of resort for these birds, though they are not com- mon most in places, and they seem to be rather on the increase than the contrary. On the 7th of May, 1863, I saw a nest of the Hawfinch situated at the top of a apple tree in the Grove, containing five eggs it was composed of small sticks and twigs, slightly lined with tall : hay and one or two One found feathers. since 1873. GOLDFINCH. None (Fringilla carduelis.} since 1873. SISKIN. Do (Mr. Stuart's.) (Fringilla spinus.) not breed here. LINNET. (Fringilla cannabina.) Common. LESSER REDPOLE. (Fringilla linaria.} Very common during the winter. general here. Does not breed in CORVIDJE. MEALY REDPOLE. 147 (Fringilla borealis.} Not common, although some are seen most years during the winter, and are occasionally caught. TWITE. (Fringilla montium.} Occasionally caught during the months of October, November, and December, when they arrive here from the north. BULLFINCH. (Loxia pyrrhula.) Common.
