‘Born on Christmas Day’; Scarlett’s Song
sung by Dragon School Choir
What is the Dragon Sale?
The Dragon Christmas Charity Sale brings
the entire Dragon School community
together on the last day of the Christmas
Term to raise money for charities
linked to children and families.
It is a wonderful opportunity for absolutely
everyone – children, parents, grounds men,
teaching, administrative and catering staff – to
work together during the Christmas Term,
making and creating ideas, culminating in the
wonderfully chaotic and fun Dragon Sale.
A very well done to everyone
involved in the 2014 Sale.

Opening Address
He has played three members of the Royal
Family: George V (BBC), George III (HBO) and
Edward VIII (CH4).
He has played three priests. Tartuffe at the
Almeida Theatre, Mr Collins in
Pride and Prejudice and Adam Smallbone in Rev.
He has played seven gay men. Highlights include
Lord Alfred Douglas opposite Liam Neeson as
Oscar Wilde in David Hare’s The Judas Kiss, and
he was the original Baby in Jez Butterworth’s
Mojo at the Royal Court.
Tom Hollander grew up in Oxford.
His acting career began at the Dragon when,
owing to his loud singing voice, he was
encouraged by Rabbits to play Oliver in the
school play. Tim Luke, the Prime Minister’s
Special Economics Advisor, played a pickpocket.
Later at Cambridge Tom played the title role in
Cyrano De Bergerac with the Deputy Prime
Minister appearing as one of the Gascony
Cadets. Despite these connections Tom hasn’t
been asked to join the government.
In his final year at the Dragon he played the
leading lady in The Pirates of Penzance.
Years later he was cast in Pirates of the
Carribean. The leading lady however, was played
by Keira Knightley.
He did however win the part of Celia in Cheek
by Jowl’s iconic all male production of As You
Like It, whom he elected to play as a lesbian. His
Dragon School training proved invaluable and he
won an Ian Charleston Award.
He has played two of the Cambridge Spies: Guy
Burgess (BBC) and Kim Philby (TNT).
2
His first professional engagement was aged 14 in
BBC1’s John Diamond (1981). He got a term off
school (Abingdon) and lived in a hotel, which he
enjoyed very much.
Other film credits include: The Riot Club,The
Invisible Woman, About Time, Hanna, In the Loop,
Pride and Prejudice, Gosford Park,The Soloist, A Good
Year, Martha, Meet Frank, Daniel And Lawrence,
Enigma, Possession,The Lawless Heart, Some
Mother’s Son and Bedrooms and Hallways.
Next year he will appear in the Weinstein
Company’s Tulip Fever as an unscrupulous
society doctor, and for Warner Brothers as
Benedict Cumberbatch’s craven underling in The
Jungle Book.
This year for BBC2 he played Dylan Thomas in
Andrew Davis’ A Poet in New York.
He occasionally writes for The Spectator.
He was recently thrilled to be offered a small
part in a new film called Altamira (Directed by
Hugh Hudson) starring his god daughter Allegra
Allen (D Block). He was unfortunately,
unavailable.
2013 Sale
Beneficiaries
Authors’
Corner
Dragon
Philanthropists
Enterprise and Philanthropy are among the many
skills the Dragon aims to nuture in children.
The Sale provides a wonderful opportunity
for any Dragon pupil who has the desire to be
an entrepreneur to create a ‘pop up’ business
for a day. Creating a stall at the Sale requires
imagination, team work and determination, and
is a test of business skills in a very competitive
market place. In rising to this challenge,
devoting many hours to creating a successful
stall and dedicating any profit to the benefit
of others less fortunate than them, Dragon
entrepreneurs can embrace and celebrate the
spirit of philanthropy. All Dragon pupils (not just
those running the stalls) can request for Sale
funds to go to a charity they wish to support by
filling out an application form from the Lodge,
or by downloading one from the Sale website.
This year all pupils will have the opportunity
to vote for a charity they believe deserves
our support. Thirty-five charities have been
nominated. Each will receive a percentage
of the funds according to the pupil vote.

Authors’ Corner
Sir Roger Bannister CBE will be joining Authors’ Corner to sign
copies of his memoir, Twin Tracks. A former Olympic athlete,
Sir Roger is best known for being the first person to run the
sub-four-minute mile in 1954. Later becoming a distinguished
neurologist and Master of Pembroke College, Sir Roger is now
retired and lives in Oxford.
Nell Gifford will be signing copies of her book, Giffords Circus;
The First Ten Years. Nell has a degree in English Literature from
New College, Oxford. She began her circus career at Circus Flora
in the USA, and has also worked with Santus Circus, Chinese
State Circus, Bobby Roberts Super Circus and Circus Roncalli
in Germany under Yasmine Smart. Since 2000, Nell has been the
Executive Producer on all thirteen Giffords Circus shows.
Sir Roy Strong returns to the Dragon to sign copies of his latest
book, Remaking a Garden; The Laskett Transformed, in which
he tells the remarkable story of the remodelling of his gardens
in Herefordshire. A writer, broadcaster, historian and gardener,
Sir Roy was formerly the Director of the Victoria and Albert
Museum.
Janis Winehouse’s daughter, Amy, died tragically young at 27.
With a worldwide fan-base and millions of record sales, she had
the world at her feet. Instead, in the years prior to her passing,
she battled addictions and was often the subject of lurid tabloid
headlines. But who was the real Amy? Amy’s mother, Janis, knew
her in a way that no-one else did. In this warm, poignant and, at
times, heartbreaking memoir, she reveals the full story of the
daughter she loved.
Richard Dawkins returns to the Dragon to sign copies of his
memoir, An Appetite for Wonder, which tells the personal story
of his early life. He will also be signing copies of The Reality of
Magic, a beautifully illustrated science book for younger readers.
A professor at Oxford University until 2008, Richard was voted
the world’s top thinker in 2013 in a poll of readers by Prospect
Magazine. He is the author of bestselling books The Selfish Gene
and The God Delusion. A fellow of New College, Richard lives in
Oxford.

Authors’ Corner
Representatives of the Oxford Preservation Trust will be returning
to Authors’ Corner to sell copies of their two popular books of
guided heritage walks in Oxford. On Foot From Oxford Castle
To St Giles and On Foot From Broad Street both contain a
treasure chest of information exploring the history and evolution
of these areas of central Oxford.
Stephanie Dalley will be signing copies of The Mystery of the
Hanging Garden of Babylon; An Elusive World Wonder Traced.
This book and research formed the subject of a Channel 4
documentary on the true location of one of the seven wonders
of the Ancient World. Dr Dalley taught at Oxford University’s
Oriental Institute and is an honorary Senior Research Fellow at
Somerville. She has one husband, three children, five grandchildren,
one dog and a garden.

Children’s Authors
Award-winning illustrator Korky Paul returns to the Dragon to
sign copies of a number of his hugely popular children’s books
including titles from the Winnie the Witch series. Korky will also
be delighting his young audience in the Michael Cowan Lecture
Theatre with an interactive show with the incomparable Winnie…
not to be missed! A great favourite at the Dragon Sale, Korky
grew up in Rhodesia and now lives in Oxford.
Lauren Child almost needs no introduction as the creator of
the world-famous Charlie and Lola books and TV series – which
won four BAFTAS and is aired in more than 34 countries. Widely
considered one of the most creative author/illustrators working
today, she is also the author of the Clarice Bean series. Lauren will
be signing copies of her most recent work, the Ruby Redfort
series, of which book four, Ruby Redfort; Feel the Fear, was
published in September 2014. Lauren will also be signing copies of
her new titles for younger readers; The New Small Person and
The Princess and the Pea in Miniature.
13
Children’s Authors
Josh Lacey will be signing copies of his Dragonsitter series. The
Dragonsitter was shortlisted for the Roald Dahl Funny Prize and
there are four books in the series, all of which will be available
at the Sale. A former journalist and author of the Dog Called Grk
series, Josh lives in London with his wife and daughters.
Gillian Johnson is the creator of the delightful half-mermaid Thora
novels and illustrator of the best-selling We’re Going on a Bar
Hunt by Emlyn Rees and Josie Lloyd. A popular guest in previous
years, Gillian returns to Authors’ Corner to sign copies of her
new work, The Lost Sock and The Very Hungover Caterpillar,
a parody of the children’s classic aimed at adults. Her popular
Disastrous Little Dragon book will also be on sale.
Best known to the Dragon community as Head of Middle School,
Rob Overend will be signing copies of his first illustrated book
Horace Burp; Lizard Boy. He will be joined by his mother-inlaw and author of the story, Christine Tennent. Rob has started
a Dragon comic, The Scaly Scribbler, which raises money for local
children’s hospitals. He also teaches cartooning to E Blockers,
helping them to produce their own publications. Rob is looking
forward to creating more Horace Burp books and dreams of
seeing them one day in animated film.
Esme Kerr will be signing copies of her first novel, The Glass
Bird Girl, which is part of a new series set in a castle-like English
boarding school. Esme herself went to ten schools and studied
History at Oxford and Cambridge. She has three children, two
dogs, three cats and four fish. She lives between Oxford and
London, but only comes alive when writing.
Writer and illustrator Clive Goddard will be signing copies of his
Fintan Fedora series, which follows the adventures of a hapless
explorer. Clive didn’t know he was a writer until he wrote the
Fintan series. He thought he was a cartoonist. It was probably
illustrating a dozen or so Horribly Famous books that gave
him this idea. Selected copies from this series will also be on
sale. Clive has been on plenty of disastrous adventures himself
and lives in Oxford where he rides a bike, plays badminton and
practises sleeping for long periods of time.

collaborations with his greatest librettist,
Lorenzo Da Ponte, Così fan tutte is a bittersweet comedy in which real people face
real and painful predicaments. It drew from
Mozart some of his most captivating music,

shade of humour, passion and humanity;
dealing intimately with the ambiguities,
perplexities and joys of life. Artistic
Director Douglas Boyd conducts and John

JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY INTO

The Egyptian oasis of Siwa has drawn
settlers for millennia – even Cleopatra

three distinct buildings and sleeps up to 20,
in five bedrooms, plus three guest suites,
with cinema, traditional high-ceilinged
rooms and a room called the library, that
is open to the sky. There is a house-boy.
Michael, his wife Ali and family visit the
house during the winter to take advantage
of the balmy weather for outdoor activities
including horse riding, sand surfing,
shopping, visiting the museum and the salty
Shali Fortress, or swimming in the three
pools which double as cisterns for the
nearby vegetable garden. Michael and Ali are
offering a week’s stay anytime in 2015. They
will happily offer advice on what to do in
Egypt and Siwa, and will arrange transport
from Cairo airport to the house (to be paid
