Veteran of the Month
Honoring Dr. Frank L. Christian
Captain, US Army
Dr. Frank L. Christian filled out a World War I draft
registration on 12 September 1918, when he was age 42 and
was superintendent of the New York State Reformatory at
Elmira.
He enlisted 29 October 1918, on orders of the War
Department, Office of the Surgeon General, and served in the
22nd Infantry Regiment until 19 February 1919, when his
service was no longer required.
Having been the prison physician for many years, he hoped
to find use for is abilities as a surgeon. But his prison work
soon came to light and he spent the war years, first at Fort
Jay and the U.S. Army Atlantic Disciplinary Barracks at
Castle Williams on Governors Island in New York Harbor,
and then at the Fort Leavenworth Army Disciplinary
Barracks. At Leavenworth, they were troubled with riots
resulting from racial difficulties and the unwise handling of
conscientious objectors. As aide to the commandant, Dr.
Christian’s talents were fully employed.
One of his grandchildren’s favorite stories of their Grampa’s
short military career occurred at Fort Leavenworth. He had
an office on the second floor of one of the fort’s buildings,
with an outside stairway leading up to it. The prisoners were
rioting and had gathered around the bottom of the stairway,
loudly threatening to storm his office. He stepped out of his
office, stood at the top of the stairs, leveled his .45 caliber
pistol at them and said, “I’ll shoot the first son-of-a-bitch who
puts his foot on the stairway!” Nobody wanted to be the one
to get shot and the rioters dispersed.
After his discharge as a Captain in the US Army Medical
Corps, he served until 1935, at the age of 59, as a reservist in
the 98th Division (NY Guard). After the War, he was a charter
member and first treasurer of the Horseheads NY American
Legion, Post 442.
