FAMILY FUN
It’s a pretty casual
week at my house as the
kids enter their
second week of
vacation. We’ve
filled our time
with outings,
activities and a in tHe
little too much
finger painting,
but are looking
forward to our New Year’s
Eve party at home.

WEDNESDAY
Should New Year’s Eve be an
adults-only night or should
parents plan a child-friendly
event at home? In years past,
it has been an adults-only
outing at my house. This year,
I am including the kids. We’re
heading out to the annual city
of Naples new Year’s eve
fireworks show. The rockets’
red glare can be viewed from
7:30 to 8 p.m. They’re shot
from the Naples Pier and are
visible from Lowdermilk Park,
all the way south to the end of
Gordon Drive.
THURSDAY
It will be a day of rest and
recuperation at my house.
We might stay in our pajamas
all day. Everyone needs a day
to do nothing.

or decades, an elite group of
broadcast journalists have
prompted us to consider
new perspectives. One of the
best known among them is Jane
Pauley, “Dateline NBC” anchorwoman for nearly a dozen years
and “Today” co-host for nearly 13.
But not so many years ago,
Pauley herself was forced to
find a new perspective. In her
latest book, “Your Life Calling:
Reimagining the Rest of Your
Life,” Pauley talks about reimag-
ining life at various stages. It is
based on stories of people who
have reinvigorated their lives
and careers along with her own
views on the surprising journey
that can happen as we age.
“Opportunity was ringing my
doorbell from a very early age until it stopped rather abruptly, and
in my mid-50s, I realized if anything was going to happen, I was
going to make it happen myself,”
she said in a recent interview.
“I was too young to be answering the question, ‘How are you

On Feb. 19, the veteran

League Club annual fundraising efforts. The League
Club’s main event is the
“Your Life Calling: A Conversation with Jane Pauley
presented by IberiaBank”
luncheon on Feb. 19 at The
Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort,
Naples.
Pauley says the approaches to change and
transition and future opportunities intrigue her.
She recognizes not everyone who is reading the
book will want to sell the
house, jump into an RV
and hit the road.
“Reimagine doesn’t have
to be a 180 degree turn — it
could be a five-degree adjustment amplification of
your life,” she said. “There
may be a phase of life to
look forward to, where
you might be able to do

Accreditation
and recertification
Vein Specialists and Vascular
Diagnostics received a three-year
term of accreditation in vascular
testing in the areas of peripheral
venous testing by IAC. IAC grants
accreditation only to facilities that
provide quality ultrasound patient
care in compliance with national
standards through a comprehensive
application process.
Dr. Joseph G. Magnant, owner of
Vein Specialists, has been recertified
in vascular surgery by the American
Board of Surgery.
The certification required vascular surgeons to pass a rigorous
examination that includes the most
recent development in all areas of
vascular surgery. Magnant now is
certified through 2024.

Pauley’s storytelling
skills have enabled her to
remain timeless, even after long breaks from television.
“This is not a how-to
book — it is a story book,”
she said.
Pauley said she was
intrigued by The League
Club opportunity because
it is a group devoted to volunteerism and education
whose purpose deals with
meaning, community and
reimagined lives.
“The League Club members are lifelong learners
and that leapt out at me,”
she said. “When you volunteer, you are part of a
community that helps a
community.” Through

events with Pauley will
help them continue that
stewardship.
Pauley’s life has included a career in television,
best-selling books and family. Her list of professional
accomplishments is formidable. After co-hosting
“Today” from 1976 to 1989,
she anchored “Dateline
NBC” for 11 years and
then helmed her own daytime program, “The Jane
Pauley Show.” She wrote
“Skywriting: A Life Out
of the Blue” and created
an award-winning series
called “Life Reimagined
Today” in collaboration
with AARP. Pauley is an
Emmy award winner, a Radio and Television News
Directors Association
honoree and an Ameri-

can Women in Radio and
Television honoree for
outstanding achievement.
She has won the Walter
Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism
and was inducted into the
Broadcasting and Cable
Hall of Fame. The mother
of three also is an advocate
for health and education.
Pauley’s book encourages readers to make life
the best it can be. Here are a
few snippets of her wisdom:
■ Read. “Listening to
other people’s stories is
how we discover our own,
how we learn for ourselves
and about ourselves, and
that is even if the story is
about ourselves.”
■ Reflect. Pauley believes “that just one story
will speak to a yearning
or discontent and another
may help focus a rising
sense of optimism and
well-being. Maybe you’ll
be energized to take a bold
first step or decide to take a
step back and reflect.”
■ Realize. You’re not
alone. One of the most
poignant statements in
her book is this: “How reassuring to know we’re all
in this together.”
