A Message from Baystate Children’s Hospital
The Pediatric Hematology-Oncology division at Baystate Children’s
Hospital takes care of young children and teenagers with blood and
cancer diagnoses. Treatments happen in the hospital as well as the
outpatient clinic at Sadowsky Center for Children. Currently, we are
able to cure more than 75% of the children with cancer. However,
children with cancer and their families undergo an intense experience
due to their aggressive treatment, frequent admissions to the hospital, at
times complications from their treatment and other social stressors. Our
program aims for a team approach to provide holistic and family
centered care for these patients and their families. A particular focus is
to provide support for families and improve the experience for children
who can spend long hours in the clinic or the hospital.
Warm hearted and generous donations to the program, such as from
Statewide Towing Association, make a huge difference in improving the
experience for the patients and families. Last years’ utilization of
philanthropic funds included providing Christmas gifts for children,
massage therapy for parents while in clinic with their children,
purchasing of better entertainment equipment for children getting
chemotherapy in clinic (wii gaming system, flat screen TVs, notebooks,
new movie DVDs), a newer digital weighing scale with side bars (better
for children who are weak or handicapped from their treatment), lighter
and more mobile i.v. infusion poles with child friendly colors (allowing
children to be more independent and mobile while receiving many hours
of infusion in clinic). Among other things on the wish list, we are also
planning to add music therapy ( Rusty plays musical instruments with
the children while they are in clinic) for our patients.
