Benefit Performance
~ ABOUT THIS EVENING ~
2014 is a milestone for numerous reasons. Seiskaya Ballet turned forty
this season, this is our thirty-fifth anniversary at the Staller Center and a total
of seventy Seiskaya trained dancers have now opted for professional careers.
In keeping with historical significance, La Boutique Fantasque is being
restaged after having debuted in 1981, our second season at Staller. Familiar
names dotted the cast such as current BESFI board member Lesli Lyon,
Seiskaya Ballet Mistress Johanna Hsu, BESFI Summer Intensive teachers
Eileen Houghton and Alexandra Kastrinos and professional dancers/ballet
teachers Allison Wade, Karen Lynch and Anthony Basile. Four distinguished
guest artists headline this year's cast: former NYCB principal dancer Stephen
Hanna, former ABT soloist Carlos Lopez plus the Joffrey Ballet's Oğulcan
Borova and Matthew Dibble formerly with England's Royal Ballet. It is only
fitting that this outstanding quartet of guest artists will be joined by one of
Seiskaya Ballet's brightest stars, home-grown guest artist, Anna Craddock, on
this memorable occasion.
BESFI PERFORMANCE 2013 ~ IN REVIEW
Dulcet Tones, Splashes of Color and Brilliant Dancers
Commanded the Stage
"The cornucopia of ballet that is the annual BESFI Benefit at Stony
Brook University’s Staller Center for the Arts was a feast for the ears full of
familiar classical passages and brimming with colorful costumes and stellar
dance performances. Seiskaya Ballet stages the BESFI Benefit annually and
has been treating patrons to a collage of ballet pas de deux, character ballet
selections and one-act ballets since 1980. This season’s program was especially
noteworthy because of the emergence of several new talents.
The program opened with the joyful Aurora’s Wedding Pas de Deux
from Sleeping Beauty featuring Seiskaya Ballet first soloist Alexandra Berti
and guest artist the Ajkun Ballet’s J. Ryan Carroll. The attractive couple was
well-matched with long classical lines melding perfectly with the tender musical strains that ascended into a joyful finale. The partners exhibited grace
and musicality. Of particular note was Ms. Berti’s solo variation which she
executed with verve.
The Harlequinade Pas de Deux featured popular guest artist Boston
Ballet’s Boyko Dossev and Seiskaya featured soloist Danielle Lovetro. The
couple was playful, and she was aptly coy throughout the pas. Dossev was,
as usual, a masterful partner and displayed impeccable technique landing all
his double tours in fifth position and finishing his gallop turns with a flurry
of pirouettes. Lovetro was simply stunning. She exhibited high ballon in
her jumps coupled with impressive à la secondes plus a long series of Italian
fouettès which were flawlessly executed.
Seiskaya principal dancer Alexandra Palma is rightfully taking her
place as Seiskaya Ballet’s pre-eminent ballerina. Matched with Milwaukee
Ballet principal dancer David Hovhannisyan, the couple was riveting in the
Paquita Pas de Deux. Mr. Hovhannisyan’s superb elevation in jumps and
artful partnering played against Palma’s magnificent split jumps, lightning
multiple turns and professional demeanor. Interspersed in the variation section
of the pas were three solos usually incorporated into the staging of the Paquita
Grand Pas. Soloist Lauren Kerr made her mark displaying grace and fluidity.
Dancing the “gloves variations,” featured soloist Jade Donnelly’s suppleness was captivating resulting in a spot-on interpretation of this challenging
variation. Statuesque Seiskaya featured soloist Julia Kharzeev executed a
series of arabesques that accented her classic balletic lines. The pas de deux
concluded with an inspiring coda highlighted by Alexandra Palma’s rousing
single-double-single-double… 32 fouettè exhibition.
In Act II, Mr. Dossev returned to partner Seiskaya principal Anna
Craddock. Craddock, one of Seiskaya Ballet’s all-time most acclaimed dancers, has been a gold standard by which other dancers are measured. In her
final BESFI performance, she did not disappoint. Dossev and Craddock have
partnered several times and each time the chemistry and artistry of the pairing
grows. Each musical note could be seen and felt. The pathos that was exuded
made the Black Swan almost magnetic. As she consorts and beguiles Prince
Siegfried, the audience sees glimpses of tenderness and then rejection while
she taunts her suitor. The pas was elegant and enthralling eliciting thunderous
applause.
The jaunty Flower Festival Pas de Deux is a lighthearted Bournonville
choreographed pas that paired Seiskaya featured soloist Ashley Chenery and
first soloist Mac Gershfield. The couple meshed nicely yielding a cheerful and
sprightly pas. Chenery’s impressive relevé développés, beautifully arched feet
and sweet vulnerability played well against Gershfield’s swift beats, energetic
tours and teenage shyness. The two made an appealing couple.
Mr. Hovhannisyan returned for the Sylvia Pas de Deux opposite 1
Seiskaya principal dancer Alexandra Tsivitis. Ms. Tsivitis is a nicely proportioned dancer with a facility for turns, excellent small and large jumps as
well as outstanding musicality. The pas was engrossing from the outset. Her
striking blue tutu, clean classical lines, assured stage presence and beaming
smile were captivating. It was obvious to all that the couple was having fun
dancing together which added another dimension to the pas. It seemed as if
they had been dancing together for years. Both dancers executed their solo
variations with panache showing off high elevation in jumps and performing
several difficult turn sequences. The pas was a fitting conclusion to Act II.
According to the program notes for the one-act ballet, Street People
is set to a medley of Saint-Saëns compositions. The ballet “weaves a tale of
confrontation, strife, flirtatious encounters and romance based on modern day
characters.” The Valia Seiskaya choreographed ballet premiered in 1986.
The four main characters in the story are portrayed by Alexandra Palma as
the Policewoman, guest artist Billy Blanken of the Ajkun Ballet as the Policeman, Alexandra Tsivitis as the Librarian and Seiskaya Ballet featured soloist
Marianna Spentzos as the Street Urchin.
The choreography for Street People incorporates a variety of styles ranging
from pure classical to contemporary and effectively utilizes touches of mime.
The ballet is fast paced, and the poignant ending is touching. Ms. Palma
was again at her best. Her turns, including a quadruple pirouette and ending
fouettè flourish were breath-taking. Alexandra Tsivitis has extraordinary leg
extensions which she displayed several times in her pas with Billy Blanken.
It was, however, the Street Urchin around whom the story revolves who stole
the show. The lithesome and leggy Ms. Spentzos danced her way into the
audience’s heart. The Street Urchin role was a coming of age for her. Her
nicely elevated split jumps, secure turns, impeccable facilities, cherubic looks
and an ability to stay in character won everyone over. The ballet was a tour
de force with additional outstanding performances by featured soloists Alyson
Miller as the Governess and Jade Donnelly as the Skull Gang Leader.
Two character dances, Tarantella and Siberian, were staged by Character Rehearsal Mistress Nicole DiFiore. The numbers had the audience
stamping their feet and clapping to the folk rhythms. It was great fun to watch
such young dancers perform in unison. Bravo!
Nothing But Water was a contemporary solo variation danced by
Alexandra Palma that showed the breadth of her dance talents and the extent
of her dynamic athleticism that has been heretofore seldom displayed. Ms.
Palma danced with a remarkable intensity that was simply stunning.
Kudos to Costume Mistress Sue DiFiore and her staff for their professionalism in costuming the production. Lighting Director Elizabeth Silver’s
selection of projected backgrounds and the effective lighting of Street People
also added production value. Let me close with a final well done to all the
dancers and a fond farewell to Anna Craddock and Alexandra Tsivitis who
2 are headed to college this fall."

VALIA SEISKAYA
Russian-born Valia Seiskaya took her first ballet
lessons in Greece at the age of six. Her teacher was
Adam Morianoff, also a Russian émigré. (Valia
was experiencing difficulty learning Greek; thus,
it was natural for her mother to seek out a fellow
countryman.) At nine she became a scholarship
student, showing prodigious technique—for example, entrechat huit, eight beats, in centre—by
age ten. Pointe work also started at ten, character
ballet at twelve. Thereafter, Mme. Seiskaya rapidly
developed the combination of strong technique and
high elevation which would become her hallmark
as a professional.
At fifteen, Valia continued her training under Sonia Morianova, the niece of Adam
Morianoff, who had recently retired from the National Opera of Greece. She became
a member of the National Opera at seventeen, soon attaining the rank of featured soloist, and touring Europe and Russia with the company. At the National Theater her
preparation continued under resident ballet masters and choreographers, including
the Bolshoi’s Asaf Messerer, Boris Kniazev, Nina Kyrsanova and Olympia Yelodari
(former judge at the International Ballet Competitions held in Varna, Bulgaria and
Moscow).
In Greece, as in most European countries, ballet students wishing to become professionals must pass comprehensive national level examinations and obtain a license.
Mme. Seiskaya fulfilled all of her requirements and was granted both a diploma and
a license.
The Seiskaya Ballet School was founded in 1974, one year after Mme. Seiskaya
retired from the National Opera of Greece. At that time she taught all fifteen class
sections. In 1976 Studio A was doubled in size to its present 2,500 square feet, and
in 1981 Studio B was opened, adding another 1,500 square feet to the dance facility.
That year also saw the establishment of the Seiskaya Ballet Academy.
The Academy was designed as a professional training program for serious dancers who
display the determination, physical attributes and musicality of the career-oriented
dancer. Admission to the Academy is by audition only. Since the inception of the
Seiskaya Ballet programs, seventy students have opted for professional careers. The
OPEN program was developed in 2006 to compliment the Academy and accommodate
requests for more scheduling flexibility.
All Academy students are encouraged to participate in the guest teacher and summer workshop programs offered by the Ballet Education and Scholarship Fund, Inc.
(BESFI). As part of their professional preparation, Academy students’ participation
in auditions for company schools, summer workshops, internships and major dance
4 companies is routinely encouraged.
Seiskaya students have compiled an outstanding record of achievement. Through the
years, full scholarships have been awarded by every major institution for which they
have auditioned, including schools affiliated with American Ballet Theatre (ABT),
New York City Ballet, and the San Francisco, Houston, Joffrey, Pacific Northwest,
Pittsburgh, Eliot Feld, and Boston Ballets. Some of the many dance companies
Seiskaya students have joined: ABT (5), Atlanta Ballet (2), Boston (2), Ballet West,
Fort Worth, Hartford, Pacific Northwest, Pittsburgh, Royal Swedish, State Ballet of
Missouri, Ballet Arizona, Tennessee, Milwaukee (3), New Jersey, Alabama, Washington,
Louisville, Austin, Tulsa Ballets and Momix.
In 1994 Seiskaya student Michael Cusumano captured a bronze medal and Special
Commendation at the International Ballet Competition (IBC) in Varna, Bulgaria and
a coveted Jury Award (a gold medal-level award) at the Prix de Danse, Paris, France.
Valia Seiskaya was nominated that year as the Best Teacher and Coach at Varna, one
of the few Americans ever to be so honored.
In 1996 Kirov student Rasta Thomas, coached by Valia Seiskaya, reached the pinnacle:
a gold medal in the Men’s Junior Division at the 17th IBC, Varna, Bulgaria. Incredibly,
he was the first American male dancer ever to win a Junior Division gold and the
youngest male dancer ever to do so. In addition, his triumph ended a sixteen-year
stretch in which no gold medal was awarded in the Junior Men’s Division.
In 1998 Seiskaya student Elizabeth McGrath represented the U.S. in the 18th IBC in
Varna, Bulgaria. In late‘98 she was a top finalist in the 8th Concours International
de Danse de Paris, France. Among the numerous awards earned during the current
decade: Anna Craddock earned 2nd prize in the 2008 American Ballet Competition,
Miami, Fl. and in 2009, the grand prize in the 9th International Dance Competition Hellas (Greece). Seiskaya alum Cory Stearns (ABT principal) won the vaunted 2008
Erik Bruhn Prize in Toronto, Canada. In 2012, Danielle Lovetro earned 2nd place in
the regional Youth American Grand Prix while Anna Craddock swept to a 1st place
finish at the American Ballet Competition in Houston, Texas and a 1st place finish in the
senior division at the 2013 YAGP regional. Seiskaya students have captured more than
twenty national/regional awards, including those from the National Arts and Letters
Competition; National Arts Recognition and Talent Competition (Presidential Scholar
in the Arts); Saraband, Ltd; and the Amilita Hoffman Memorial Ballet Competition.
During her seventeen-year professional career with the National Opera of Greece,
Mme. Seiskaya gained an affinity for the grand sweep of story-line ballets and operas
staged by the company. Her own choreographic works, such as Street People, Las
Damiselas, Forest, MASK, and the Nutcracker, reflect that interest. Fresh interpretations
of classical favorites La Boutique Fantasque, Walpurgis Night and A
Night on Bald Mountain complement her signature ensemble works Grand Waltz,
Seasons and Dance of the Hours.
Valia Seiskaya is listed in Who’s Who Among Outstanding Americans and was The
Village Times 1985 Woman of the Year in the Arts. Thrice, she has been
awarded Teacher of the Year by YAGP. She has received commendations
from, among others, President Reagan, Governor Pataki and Congressman Forbes. In 2011, Mde. Seiskaya was elected to the Long Island
Volunteer Hall of Fame for her work nurturing young talented dancers.

MATTHEW DIBBLE
Dear Valia and Dimitri,
Thank you for everything you have done for me. The skills you taught me
have reached far beyond the ballet studio and have enabled me to
accomplish anything! For that I am truly grateful!
Love you both,
Kiersten
Born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England, Matthew
Dibble was trained at the Royal Ballet School from
the age of 11. A five year veteran of the company,
he danced several roles under the watchful eye of
director Sir Anthony Dowell. His next engagement
was in Japan, where he became a founding member
and principal dancer of the Kumakawa Ballet,
dancing works by Sir Fredrick Aston and Roland
Petit. Arriving in the United States in 2001, he joined
the Twyla Tharp Dance Company. Choreographed
by Twyla Tharp and set to music by Billy Joel,
Movin’ Out allowed him to be showcased in the
principal roles of James and Eddie. In 2007, he
joined Adventures in Motion Pictures in London
performing in Carmen, which was centered in
London, and eventually toured the United Kingdom.
Splitting time amongst them, Mr. Dibble was a guest
principal artist with Scottish Ballet and also worked
with The Benjamin Millepied Company in New York
as well as The Christopher Wheeldon Company. In
2010, he again worked with Ms. Tharp in a starring
role on Broadway in Come Fly Away, created and
performed an original principal role at the Tony
Awards Ceremony to rave reviews, and went on
the first national tour of Come Fly Away. He has
traveled extensively, setting works for Benjamin
Millepied and Twyla Tharp with the National Ballet
of China, The Pacific Northwest Ballet, and most
recently, with the St. Louis Ballet.

Le Corsaire Pas de Deux
Based on a poem by Byron, the ballet’s plot
involves a pirate (Corsaire) and a beautiful girl,
Medora, sold to a rich pasha by her guardian. In
this interlude, the slave Ali pledges his devotion
to Medora after rescuing her from the evil pasha.
After many adventures, she is reunited with her
first love, the pirate. Margot Fontaine and Rudolf
Nureyev were the first to dance the pas de deux
with the Royal Ballet.
La Esmeralda Pas de Deux
Based on Victor Hugo’s novel, The Hunchback
of Notre Dame, the ballet tells the story of the
character Quasimodo’s hopeless love for the
gypsy Esmeralda and his attempts to shield her
from the machinations of Frollo, a lustful priest.
Against this backdrop, a romance between
Esmeralda and the student Gringoire develops.
The pas de deux depicts a joyful street scene
featuring Esmeralda and her suitor Gringoire.
Don Quixote Pas de Deux
Don Quixote premiered in Russia in 1869.
The Don is perpetually searching for his idyllic
mate, Dulcinea, and falls prey to the trickery
and pranks of Basil the barber and Kitri. The
Grand Pas is the culminating celebration of the
betrothal of Basil and Kitri.
Coppelia Wedding Pas de Deux
In this comedic ballet, inventor Dr. Coppelius,
creates a dancing doll so lifelike that the
village swain, Franz, falls in love with her. He
abandons his fiance, Swanhilde, until she shows
him his folly by dressing as the doll and saving
him from an untimely end at the hands of the
inventor. The ballet culminates with Swanhilde
and Franz dancing their Wedding Pas de Deux.
Flames of Paris Pas de Deux
This ballet, depicting episodes of the French
Revolution, started a new trend in Soviet ballet.
It was the first of the heroic ballets glorifying the
people, an alternative to Tchaikovsky’s fairy tales.
This heroic style of dancing was grander and more
exultant. One of the major female roles, Mireille,
was first danced by the great Ulanova. The pas
de deux from the last act, Grand Divertissement,
was modeled on open air celebrations in the style
of painter Jacques-Louis David.
Giselle Peasant Pas de Deux
This story is based on a libretto by Theophile
Gautier, and set in an historic wooded village.

harvest. Giselle, a lovely village maiden, brings
out two peasants to entertain the hunting party
of nobles from the nearby feudal castle. She
presents them to the Countess and the Pas De
Deux commences.
Diana and Acteon Pas de Deux
This Pas de Deux is an extract from the old
Imperial standard La Esmeralda that was
reworked in the 1930s by Chabukiani. The
Diana and Acteon Pas de Deux has entered the
permanent repertoire of many Soviet principals.
Flower Festival in Genzano
Bournonville's Flower Festival is a fantasy
contrasted with everyday characters and
incidents. The great pas de deux was inserted
by H. Lander in his one-act version of Napoli
for the London Festival Ballet in 1954, and has
since been a popular number for star dancers.
La Boutique Fantasque
Set in the mid-1800’s, The Fantastic Toy
Shop is a demi-character ballet, whose plot
revolves around a toy shop where dolls come
magically to life. The array includes animated
court cards, Cossacks, dancing poodles and a
pair of prize Can-Can dolls. Set to music by
Rossini and Resphigi, the story advances by
means of melodic dance vignettes: a Tarantella,
the Mazurka, a Cossack dance and the Can-Can
Pas de Deux. The Mazurka, or Dance of the
Cards, performed in counterpoint to the music,
is a fine example of Seiskaya’s most daring
and inventive choreography. The ballet opens
as the Shopkeeper displays her mechanical
dancing dolls. The customers are delighted
with everything, but the children fall in love
with the collection’s prize dolls, a pair of CanCan dancers. Spirited bargaining takes place
as the Russian and American families each
arrange to purchase one of the dancers. As
night falls, the dolls come to life in the little
shop. Dismayed at the imminent separation
of their friends, the dolls devise a plan to
rescue the Can-Can dancers by hiding them in
a storeroom. As the second scene opens, we
find the Shopkeeper beset by the distraught
customers, who have just discovered the dolls
they had purchased are missing. Led by the
children, the customers search the store, but
upon entering the storeroom, they are attacked
by the other dolls. Thoroughly disillusioned,
the customers leave while the dolls rejoice.

All Our Love Mom, Dad & Anthony
This evening, Danielle will enchant us as she
partners with guest artist Stephen Hanna to dance the
Diana and Aceton Pas de Deux. Be sure to look for
Danielle in La Boutique Fantasque as well, when
she will delight us as Card. Partnering with Boyko
Dossev in last year’s BESFI performance, Danielle
danced the Harliquinade Pas de Deux with playful
sophistication. The Smithtown Messenger’s Phillip
L. Sciarillo praised her performance, writing,
“Lovetro was simply stunning. She exhibited high
ballon in her jumps coupled with impressive à
la secondes plus a long series of Italian fouettès
which were flawlessly executed.” With an ethereal
grace befitting the resident fairy of the Kingdom
of the Sweets, Danielle danced the role of Sugar
Plum in Seiskaya’s Nutcracker 2013. Blessed
with elegant extensions and long, fluid lines, she
also sparkled on stage as Flower Soloist, Snow,
Friend of Clara, Doll and Chinese. Danielle is a
member of the National Junior Honor Society, and
a BESFI scholarship recipient for the past four
years. She attended Bolshoi Ballet and the School

Valia, Dimitri, Kerry Ann, Johanna and Mrs. DiFiore I thank you for all the
laughter, support and most of all guidance you always have for me!
Xo Girie
In Nutcracker 2013, this beautiful young woman
brought to life the character of Clara with her
amazing acting ability. Girie also exhibited her
talent for jumps, extensions, grace and stage
presence as Snow and Flower. In last year’s BESFI
performance, she portrayed a Street Hawker and
Gang Member. This evening, in what will surely
be a memorable performance, Girie dances the
Esmeralda Pas de Deux and as Gypsy Soloist.
She has attended summer programs with ABT
and Joffrey Ballet, as well as the BESFI Summer
Intensive. This summer, in between visiting the
beach and preparing for college life in the fall, Girie
will be returning to BESFI’s summer intensive once
again. An Honor Roll student, Girie has enrolled as
a freshman at Long Island University, she will be
majoring in nutrition as part of her plan to become
a nutritionist. She will also continue to study ballet
at Seiskaya in hopes of dancing professionally. In
her spare time, Girie enjoys reading, and spending
time with her family and friends. Considering she
only began dancing six years ago, this talented,
dedicated and disciplined dancer should continue
to delight us for many years to come.

An artistic and graceful dancer with beautiful

her lovely port de bras and a playful elegance in
the Pas de Deux from Bournonville’s Flower

and exquisite technique, Alyse will be dancing
the role of Snob in La Boutique Fantasque this
evening. A seasoned veteran of the Seiskaya Ballet

last year’s BESFI production of Street People.
Alyse exploded off the stage with jumps that sent
her soaring toward the stratosphere as Chocolate

playful interpretation of Fritz was a testament to
the depth of her acting ability. Alyse is a versatile
dancer, blessed with buoyant athleticism as well as

music and letting the rest of the world disappear.”
With all our love,
Mom, Dad, Justin and Ryan
Alyson will dance the role of Melonhawker in La
Boutique Fantasque and will be featured in the
Syrtaki ensemble. With her gentle charm and quiet
grace, Aly enchanted audiences as Governess in
last year’s BESFI performance of Street People. A
versatile dancer, she took to the stage as Bo Peep,
Snowflake, Flower Soloist, and Girl at Party in
Nutcracker 2013 and danced with great aplomb.
Aly is a veteran of the BESFI Summer Program,
where she has cultivated and refined the elegant
port de bras and powerful jumps for which she is
known, and she was accepted to summer intensives
with the Joffrey Ballet and Princeton Ballet in
2013 and 2014. Named “Prima Ballerina” by the
Hauppauge High School Dance Team, Aly’s love
of the performing arts extends to musical theatre –
she has performed in her high school’s productions
of Me and My Girl, Guys and Dolls, and Merrily
We Roll Along. A high honor roll student, Aly is
a member of the National Honor Society and the
French Honor Society, and she was awarded the
Academic Letter of Excellence. Aly aspires to have
a career in medicine, but she knows that dance will
always be part of her life and close to her heart.

This evening, Diana takes to the stage in the

This evening, Jamie takes to the stage in the
colorful Syrtaki character dance and displays
her exuberant stage presence in the role of Doll
in La Boutique Fantasque. Cast as Model
in last year’s BESFI performance of Street

and delighted audiences in the process. In
Nutcracker 2013, she lent her long, elegant
lines and dynamic jumps to the roles of
Snow, Bo Peep, Arabian Soloist, and Boy at
the Party. Jaime has been a student of the
BESFI Summer Program since 2012. A young
lady with a strong work ethic, Jamie plans to
someday take over her family’s business and
pursue her own business goal of restoring
classic cars. Passionate about watersports, she
enjoys waterskiing, snorkeling, and deep sea
fishing. Jamie has been driving boats since the
age of 10, and dreams of owning a superboat.
There are few things this ballerina enjoys more

Congratulations Brianna Jimenez
and all the Seiskaya Ballet dancers
on your 2014 BESFI performance.
Brianna takes to the stage this evening in
the Kazachok ensemble and as Shopkeeper’s
Assistant in La Boutique Fantasque. A
School Girl in Street People and member
of the Tarantella ensemble in last year’s
BESFI performance, Brianna is blessed with
beautifully arched feet and an elegant grace
that belies her age. Just 10 years old during
Nutcracker 2013, Brianna was cast as Child
at Party and Soldier and also enjoyed the
distinction of being the youngest Seiskaya
dancer to ever perform in both the Snow and
Flower ensembles, for which she was honored
with a featured article in The Nutcracker
Herald. A BESFI scholarship recipient Brianna
is a veteran of the BESFI Summer Intensive
program, Brianna participates in student
government at her school and assists with

Dear Valia, Dimitri, Nicole & Johanna,
Thank you for all of your guidance, teaching and support!
Love,
Jenna
Dynamic jumps and laudable leaps abound
when jubilant Jenna takes to the stage! Look
