If you haven’t been, it would be well worth Jennifer Kelly, your time and finances to attend this huge President event at least once. There are almost an endless line-up of new and improved products to offer our clients. Of these, lighting really caught my attention. It is everywhere! LED lighting has been brought to the forefront as an easy and affordable way to light EVERYTHING! Inside cabinets, drawers, toe-kick, under cabinets, behind crown, etc. If you are new to this product it is an easy and functional product to offer your clients. Check out more online. IBS is also a great place for education opportunities. What are you interested in? Yep, there is a class for that! NAHB offers classes on a diverse range of topics before, during and after the event. I was lucky enough to catch a class by one of my favorite instructors Joe Lstiburek (it’s OK, he can’t pronounce it either). Better yet, plan on attending the 2017 show in Orlando January 10-12, 2017. Bringing it back home, our Regional Home & Garden Show will be at TRAC in Pasco Feb 19-21. Nearly 11,000 people attend this event in 2015! This is a great way to check out suppliers and service providers in our area. Booth space is sold out (there are still several sponsorships available) but if you’re interested in participating the HBA is looking for volunteers. Please contact Cindy at 509.735.2745. One additional item to share regarding education- March is education month at the HBA. There are currently 9 classes scheduled and several more are getting scheduling kinks worked out. CESCL - Certified Erosion & Sediment Control Lead March 29-30, 8am-5pm Cost: $75 for HBATC Members / $250 for BIAW Members / $325 for Non-members RSVP: BIAW - Click Here Do you need a Construction Stormwater General Permit from Ecology? If your project disturbs over an acre of land or is in a subdivision, you probably do. Part of the requirements of this permit states: all sites disturbing over an acre must have a Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead (CESCL). The CESCL is trained to inspect, install, and manage stormwater controls on your site. Because Ecology requires CESCL to be on-call at all times, most companies will need more than one employee trained as a CESCL. CESCL Recertification March 31, 8am-5pm Cost: $40 HBATC Members / $175 BIAW Members / $250 Non-members RSVP: BIAW - Click Here The Department of Ecology requires a CESCL on all stormwater permitted construction sites over an acre, and CESCL certifications must be renewed every three years with a one-day class. Designed for residential builders, BIAW’s CESCL recertification course will answer the most-asked builder questions, including what BMP’s perform best on construction sites, how to keep those BMP’s working, what red flags signal erosion problems, and how to effectively work with local and state inspectors. This course will also walk you through the planning and execution of erosion control in a subdivision. Health Care Corner The ACA in 2016 - Changes in Policies, Procedures, Politics 2015 brought about several key changes and delays in the Affordable Care Act that have broad, even if sometimes unnoticed, effects on employers. Below are three key takeaways for employers to know in 2016. THE CHANGING DEFINITION OF A “LARGE” GROUP. One of the more substantial changes made to the ACA last year was the passage of the PACE Act in October. Originally, 2016 was to bring about a change in the definition of “small” group versus a “large” group for health insurance rating purposes. Prior to the passage of this law, thousands of business who employed between 50-99 employees were going to be considered “small” groups and thus required to be lumped into the more restrictive community rating model. The passage of the law allows employers with 50 or more employees to continue to be rated as a “large” group and avoid being community rated. THE DELAY OF THE “CADILLAC TAX” The so-called “Cadillac Tax” was delayed by Congress this past December from taking effect in 2018 until 2020 as a part of a rare bipartisan compromise. The Cadillac tax is scheduled to impose a 40% tax on employers whose insurance coverage cost more than certain thresholds ($10,200 for individual coverage, and $27,500 for family coverage) or so called “Cadillac” plans. This regulation has been widely contested since its passage and its delay (and likely demise) was widely applauded within the business community. DELAY OF THE 1095C AND 1094C REPORTING On December 28, 2015, the IRS released a notice granting much needed time for employers and their filing services to catch up to Affordable Care Act Information Returns that many employers are struggling to deal with. In summary: • Deadline to Furnish Forms 1095-C to Individuals: Extended from February 1, 2016 to March 31, 2016. • Deadline to File Forms 1094-C and 1095-C with the IRS (paper filers): Extended from February 29, 2016 to May 31, 2016. • Deadline to File Forms 1094-C and 1095-C with the IRS (electronic filers): Extended from March 31, 2016 to June 30, 2016. To achieve Spike status you must earn six credits within two consecutive membership years (Jan. 1 to Dec. 31). To retain Spike status and become a Life Spike, you must earn a minimum of one Spike credit (new or retention) each membership year until you reach a total of 25 credits.
