We are absolutely thrilled to have you all here, to celebrate the Brooks and to celebrate our featured winemakers: Robert Turner Wines, Tallulah, Bernardus Winery, Krutz Family Cellars, The Scholium Project and Three Sticks Winery. I hope you are as proud as I am of the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. We have the largest and finest art collection in the state of Tennessee, and one of the finest in the South. Our amazing education programs reach out to Memphis children in many ways, transforming young lives through the power of art every day. We could not do all that we do without your generous participation tonight. The dollars raised tonight will directly impact young lives, and enable access to the arts for children and adults across the Mid-South region. Please accept my heartfelt thanks! Emily Ballew Neff 4 FROM the CO-CHAIRS What an exciting time in the life of the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art! We are thrilled to be a part of it. With a new and extremely talented director at its helm, and a centennial celebration in the works for 2016, the Brooks is poised for continued success in serving this community and enriching so many lives. The Memphis Wine + Food Series is the largest fundraiser for the Brooks Museum and it includes many opportunities for the wine and food lover. It kicked off this year with the lively Brooks Uncorked event, which drew a sellout crowd. We raised more money this year than ever before! This was in large part a result of the efforts of our chairs, Suzanne and Jon Scharff, along with the rock star team that they put together. The Private Winemaker Dinner was held at the home of close friends of the Brooks, Mr. and Mrs. Kent Farmer. A lovely evening was enjoyed by a sellout crowd of 75 lucky attendees. They enjoyed wines from all of the 2015 vintners: Bernardus Winery, Tallulah, Robert Turner Wines, Krutz Family Cellars, Three Sticks Winery and The Scholium Project. This year, locallyacclaimed chefs Michael Hudman and Andy Ticer shared the stage along with fellow Memphian Jonathan Magallanes and guest chefs, Jeff Michaud and Brad Spence of Philadelphia, and Gerard Craft of St. Louis. All of them have been finalists for or won prestigious James Beard Awards, so we were blessed indeed. Chairs for this dinner were Pamela Hauber and Steve West. They put their unique touch on this dinner, for which we are so thankful. And soon, we look forward to announcing the details for the fabulous fall Fleming’s Wine Dinner, chaired by Sophie and Mat Parker. Tonight, we find ourselves at the Brooks Grand Auction, which promises to be a night to remember. Many thanks to Lindsey and Josh Hammond for chairing tonight’s event and to all of our featured vintners who are here to celebrate and share their wines with us. We are in for a real treat! The final event of the series, Vin-A-Que, will take place on October 2nd, and will highlight local BBQ offerings from various venues, both on and off the beaten path. Locally-owned Cornerstone Cellars will be our featured winery. Our chair, Chris Shelton, envisions making this a grassroots event that will make every Memphian proud. We are looking forward to the best Vin-A-Que yet, and welcoming you all back to the Brooks in October. We are very honored to serve as chairs for the 2015 Memphis Wine + Food Series. We wholeheartedly believe in the Brooks Museum and all that it does for our community. Besides hosting a world-class art collection, the Brooks is recognized nationally for its innovative educational programs and community outreach. Wendi and Marc Mihalko Billie and Joe Pierce 5 THE SERIES ABOUT The Memphis Wine + Food Series is the premier fundraising event for the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. Held each year, these prestigious events were created in the late 1980s as a biannual event, and over the last 18 years have grown into the most prominent annual wine auction in the Mid-South region. Since the early 1990s, the series has contributed over $4 million in net revenue to the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. Unique to the Memphis Wine + Food Series is the expense to revenue ratio: we are proud to direct proceeds raised from these events back into our award-winning educational programming for our Memphis community. The Brooks is enormously grateful to the many donors, buyers, and participants who worked so hard over the years to make these events a success. Countless people have given their time, talent and resources for the benefit of the Wine + Food Series and, ultimately, the museum. 6 THE MUSEUM Dedicated to the vision of transforming lives through the power of art, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art is one of the most innovative and community focused art museums in the nation. With an encyclopedic art collection spanning millennia of time, the Brooks Museum serves as a cultural cornerstone of our city, state, and region. Through the strength of unsurpassed professional practice, new scholarship, special exhibitions, and a permanent collection built on over 99 years of community investment, the board and staff of the Brooks are devoted to making our city a better place to work, live, and play. In recent years, the Brooks has grown to particular note in its deeply embedded education programs, which have included a new early childhood initiative and art therapy programs. Museums around the country are following the Brooks’ lead. Founded in 1916, the Brooks Museum is a vibrant cultural complex composed of 29 galleries, two art classrooms, a print study room, a private research library and a professional auditorium with state-of-the-art audio/visual equipment. In addition, the Brooks includes an award-winning restaurant, a museum store, and both public and private meeting spaces. Each year in our galleries we present more than a dozen special exhibitions and an ever-changing selection from our permanent collection. The art we present is brought to life by public programs for children and adults throughout the year, including numerous film screenings, visiting lecturers, dance performances and free family events. The Brooks is a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit institution that depends on the generosity of Memphians to support the museum’s impact through charitable giving, grants, sponsorships, and earned revenues. The Brooks’ membership program is highly active and raises over a half million dollars each year in support. Several generations of farmers and ministers make a large part of his family tree. Raised in Memphis just north of the family farm in Como, Mississippi, you could count on two things: Church on Sunday, and fresh farm-raised meals on the table afterwards. Mike always had a yearning for the outdoors and the good life. After graduation from Rhodes College, the urge to travel took over and he found himself in the Florida Keys for 15 months, where he found his love for wine and food. With the encouragement of a good friend, he moved to California and landed at DeLoach Vineyards as a cellar rat. The occasional chance to drive a tractor was the highlight of a burgeoning career as a winemaker. After a brief stint at Jordan Sparkling Wine, he was named Assistant Winemaker at the prestigious winery, Far Niente. In 2003 the opportunity to head up the winemaking operations at Luna Vineyards arose. Following in the footsteps of John Kongsgaard, he embraced a minimalist style of winemaking. Coaxing the smallest detail from the vineyard and a hands-off style in the cellar, Luna’s red wines began to get the attention of the world’s most demanding critics. In November 2009 Mike left his post at Luna and began his focus on Tallulah Wines, which happened to be his daughter’s first name. Tallulah Bankhead is a distant cousin on his mother’s side, as well. Tallulah focuses on single vineyard wines from sustainable and organic vineyards and there is no fining or filtering of the wines. ROBERT TURNER Owner/Winemaker, Robert Turner Wines Memphis resident Bob Turner graduated from White Station High School, Vanderbilt University and the University of Tennessee School of Dentistry, after which the U.S. Navy sent Bob and his wife, Shirley, to California. In 1970 they settled in Palo Alto where Bob practiced dentistry for 37 years in the Stanford Medical Center. Bob began his wine-making career in 1986 on a friend’s property in the Santa Cruz mountains, overlooking what is now Silicon Valley, with a group of friends. The wine, and the property were named Rancho Diablo. To add to his wine knowledge during this time, Bob studied oenology and wine chemistry at UC Davis. Eventually Rancho Diablo was sold, and after the Turners moved to San Francisco, Bob started making wine in their garage, to the delight of the neighbors. Robert Turner Wines was started in St. Helena in the Napa Valley in 2004 in a friend’s winery, and features carefully handcrafted varietals: Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and a Rosé. Production is kept to just below 500 cases per year, with the grapes sourced from premium vineyards in Napa and the Russian River area of Sonoma Valley. Bob is the winemaker, overseeing every step of the wine’s evolution from harvest to sale. The wines are distributed in Toronto, Memphis and Chattanooga, where they are found in numerous restaurants and wine stores. The Turners have a home in Memphis. They divide their time between here and California, where they enjoy their children and grandchildren in San Francisco and Laguna Beach. When not spending time with family or working on wines, Bob can be found on a golf course or a trout stream. 17 ROB BAKER Director of Sales and Marketing Global, Bernardus Winery Born and raised in Memphis, Rob Baker is a graduate of White Station High School and Baylor University. Upon graduation, Rob planted vines with Perry Welch of Millington plant vines in 1995 at what would become Old Millington Road Winery. After moving to California to attend UC Davis, he ended up working harvest and crush for cult Cab producer Kathryn Kennedy in the Santa Cruz Mountains. His love for wine and winemaking led him to start working for Bernardus in sales and marketing in 1998 and the rest, as they say, is history. He currently serves as the Director of Sales and Marketing Global for Bernardus Winery. Dutch winery owner Bernardus Marinus Pon has a unique heritage. His family is responsible for bringing the first Volkswagen to the U. S., he was in the Munich Olympics in 1972, and he also served as team leader for Porsche Holland Racing for many years. Winemaker Dean DeKorth did all his schooling in Burgundy with LaFlaive and others. He is an avid lover of BBQ so Baker trades him winemaking skills for BBQ secrets. Baker is the owner of Me and the Hound Memphis BBQ in Monterey County, California, a company set up to raise money for charities like SPCA, CASA, Boys and Girls Club, and Make-A-Wish. He is also fortunate enough to cook his BBQ in Clint Eastwood’s 4th Tehama BBQ every year (8 years running) and for Pebble Beach Food and Wine Festival (alongside Thomas Keller, Daniel Boulud, Morimoto, Bobby Flay and others) every year since inception. He truly embodies the Memphis meets Monterey mentality. PATRICK KRUTZ Owner/Winemaker, Krutz Family Cellars Born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, Patrick exemplifies the “Southern” gentleman. After graduating from Ole Miss in 2001, he went on a journey that started in Fiji and led throughout many countries along the way, ending the summer of 2002 in Carmel, California. While working at his day job at The Cheese Shop in Carmel, he was also getting his feet wet at night (and on days off) in grapes. Krutz Family Cellars was born in the summer of 2003 in Monterey Country, California. Krutz started the winery with the idea of producing 60 cases of built-by-hand (and feet) wine for family and friends. After growing each year and moving a couple times, the winery and tasting room have settled in Santa Rosa, California. Since Krutz Family Cellars’ conception, there has been one defining constant: a sensational portfolio of wines that are also true to varietal character and vineyard fingerprint, that also bear individual style, and unsurpassed quality. In just a few short years, Patrick has been able to identify grapes from some of the most prestigious vineyards in California. Once the grapes are in the winery, we guide the wine with a light hand, and the end result is a wine that speaks for itself. Youngest brother Cole came on the scene in 2007 and has been assisting in the cellar ever since. Also joining the operation (and the family) in 2008 was Rebecca Krutz. Rebecca and Patrick have two sons and a daughter. When the business was founded, the word “Family” was included due to Patrick’s close family ties, but now it encompasses an even bigger and broader meaning. After all, anyone that enjoys a bottle of Krutz Family Cellars is a part of the Krutz extended family. On the label, the Magnolia, the state flower and tree of Mississippi, is a symbol of their Southern roots and way of life. It’s been said, “One can’t get to where they are going without knowing where they’ve been,” and at Krutz Family Cellars they take pride in where they’re from and where they are aiming to go. 18 ABE SCHOENER Owner/Winemaker, The Scholium Project Abe Schoener is winemaker at the Scholium Project and Red Hook Winery. A former professor of philosophy, Schoener became fascinated with wine after starting a small organic garden at his home in Annapolis, Michigan. Eventually his fascination with agriculture led him to leave his academic life behind and pursue winemaking in California. Unlike many who take up winemaking midlife, Schoener chose to utilize neglected and forgotten vineyards and vines in his productions. Schoener’s pursuit of offbeat vineyards has led him to produce wines using grapes from New York State as well as California. Schoener has attracted a cult following with his unconventional wines. He has become well-known for his experimental winemaking techniques and the earthy, distinct flavors of his vintages. Adventurous oenophiles the world over adore Schoener’s wines, ensuring that the winemaker’s boutique productions sell out within weeks of their release. Notable restaurants including The French Laundry and Momofuku Ko have also featured Scholium wines. The Brooks is pleased to welcome this truly distinct winemaker and his wonderful creations. BOB CABRAL Director of Winemaking, Three Sticks Winery There is very good reason Bob Cabral’s name is synonymous with great Pinot Noir. With decades of experience in Sonoma County, Bob’s passion, experience and following for his work with the varietal is second to none. From 1998 to 2014 Bob was winemaker for Williams Selyem. There, he led the winery into a new era, overseeing an expansion of new vineyard sources and bottlings for the brand, along with the construction of a state-of-the art winery. Bob’s interest in wine and farming began in childhood helping his grandfather make wine in a barn. Growing up pruning grapes, irrigating vineyards and harvesting grapes became routine on his family’s 70-acre ranch near Escalon, California. A fourth-generation farmer and grape grower from the great San Joaquin Valley, he took all he learned at the family farm and applied it to his degrees at Fresno State University. While in college, his passion for Pinot Noir became evident as he spent every spare dime, and a good chunk of his student loans, on buying wines from all over the world—mostly Burgundy and Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs. After graduating in the mid-1980s, Bob knew that Sonoma County was where he could best hone his skills and make wines to rival the best in the world. He spent 11 vintages in various winemaking positions—associate winemaker at DeLoach Vineyards, custom crush winemaker at Kunde Family Estate, winemaker at Alderbrook Vineyards and winemaker at Hartford Court Winery—before taking his seminal position at Williams Selyem. Bob’s winemaking philosophy has remained constant throughout his career—to source and farm the best fruit possible, with minimal intervention in the cellar. He was awarded the 2011 Wine Star Award from The Wine Enthusiast as “Winemaker of the Year.” 19 WINEMAKERS CHEFS ANDREW TICER AND MICHAEL HUDMAN Born and bred Memphians, Andy Ticer and Michael Hudman opened Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen in 2008 to feature innovative Italian cooking rooted in Southern tradition. The chefs trained at Johnson and Wales University in Charleston, South Carolina and the Italian Culinary Institute in Calabria, Italy. Their newest restaurant, Hog & Hominy, is a wood burning, neighborhood eatery and has been named one of the top new restaurants by GQ Magazine, Southern Living, and Bon Appetit. It was also a semi-finalist for Best New Restaurant from the James Beard Foundation, which previously named the chefs semi-finalists for the Best Chef: Southeast award for three consecutive years in 2012, 2013, and 2014. In 2013, they were awarded Food & Wine Magazine’s Best New Chefs Award and named in Starchefs.com’s 2014 Kentucky-Tennessee Rising Star Chefs. In his review of the restaurants in 2013, Pete Wells of the New York Times called the restaurants “a sibling rivalry worth diving into.” Early 2015 saw the opening of the chefs’ third space, a craft butcher shop and café, complete with classic pastries, coffee, espresso and cicchetti served in the dim sum style. Porcellino’s Craft Butcher received four stars from The Commercial Appeal. GERARD CRAFT Chef Gerard Craft is the executive chef and owner of Niche Food Group in St. Louis, Missouri. After opening Niche in 2005 at the age of 25, Chef Craft has extended his restaurant group to include Taste by Niche, a modern speakeasy, Brasserie by Niche, a classic French bistro, his approachable Italian concept, Pastaria and his first fast casual concept, Porano Pasta + Gelato opening this summer in downtown St. Louis. Chef Craft’s creative yet simple food has earned him recognition as a Food & Wine Best New Chef, Inc. magazine’s “Star Entrepreneurs under 30” as well as a six-time James Beard Foundation Finalist for Best Chef: Midwest. A native of Washington, D.C., Chef Craft became addicted to the restaurant life while living in Salt Lake City as a snowboard photographer. Chef Craft went on to cook at Bistro Toujours in Park City, Utah and Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, California as well as a stage at Ryland Inn in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey before making the leap to open a restaurant of his own. Always a believer in following intuition, Chef Craft settled on the boarded-up building in the Benton Park neighborhood of St. Louis, a Midwestern city that he had never visited. Since opening Niche in 2005, Chef Craft has been highly acclaimed for his innovative interpretations of what he calls “humble” Midwest ingredients – the best available from numerous local area farmers. Niche Food Group sources their menus through relationships with area farmers. Craft and his wife, Susan, live in St. Louis with their two daughters. 20 JEFFREY A. MICHAUD Executive Chef and Co-Owner of Osteria Restaurant Philadelphia, Osteria Restaurant New Jersey, Alla Spina, Pizzeria Vetri, Lo Spiedo and Amis Restaurant in Philadelphia, Jeff Michaud began his cooking career at age 13 in a pizza shop in his home state of New Hampshire. Inspired by his grandmother’s cooking and the beautiful wedding cakes she created, Jeff attended the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY, and graduated in 1998. He moved to Aspen, Colorado, to join the kitchen staff at the Caribou Club and working his way up to Executive Sous Chef. Jeff then moved to Philadelphia to work for critically-acclaimed Chef Marc Vetri at Ristorante Vetri as the Sous Chef. Discovering his love for Italian cooking in Marc’s kitchen, Jeff decided to further hone his skills by moving to Bergamo, Lombardia, Italy. He worked there at Mangili, a family-owned butcher shop, where he refined his skills in meat fabrication, sausage, and making salumi. Over the next three years, Jeff worked his way through the top restaurants of northern Italy, including Michelin starred Frosio and La Lucanda, as well as La Brughiera, Ristorante Loro and Ol Fa Pasticceria. His tour of northern Italy culminated with the position of Executive Chef at Locanda del Biancospino, a small inn in the foothills of the Alps. In 2006, Jeff returned to the United States, working throughout New England, and a year later opened Osteria with Marc Vetri in Philadelphia. In 2008, The James Beard Foundation nominated Osteria for “Best New Restaurant” and in 2010, awarded Jeff the James Beard Award for Best Mid-Atlantic Chef. In 2011, the online magazine The Daily Meal, named Osteria as one of the 101 Best Restaurants in America and Food & Wine magazine nominated Jeff for “Best Chef – Peoples Choice” in the mid-Atlantic region. In 2012 Jeff published his first cookbook called Eating Italy. Jeff lives in Philadelphia with his wife Claudia and daughter Gaia. BRAD SPENCE Brad Spence developed his passion for food as a child cooking at home with his mother. In high school, he began working in small restaurant kitchens before entering the Culinary Institute of America and formalizing his studies. While at the CIA, Brad worked at the acclaimed Fifth Floor in San Francisco under Chef George Marrone. Upon graduation, he moved to New York City to work for award-winning Chefs Tom Colicchio at Craftbar, and Mario Batali at Casa Mono. In 2006, Brad relocated to Philadelphia to take the helm at Chef Marc Vetri’s critically acclaimed flagship restaurant, Vetri. In his first full year as Vetri’s Chef de Cuisine, Brad continued to hone his skills in Italian cuisine, and helped construct a curing room, allowing the Vetri Family of Restaurants to offer a full house-made salumi program. To further his culinary education, Brad took an educational sabbatical in Italy to study and apprentice at Ristorante Loro and Taverna Colleoni in Bergamo, Italy. Though most of his career was spent working upscale restaurants, Brad always remained enamored with more rustic, trattoria-style Italian cuisine. In 2010, he was given his opportunity to pursue his culinary passion when he became Executive Chef/Partner of Amis. That same year, Bon Appetit magazine named Amis one of the top 10 places for pasta in the country. It remains one of Philadelphia’s top dining destinations. In both 2013 and 2014, Brad was named a finalist for the prestigious James Beard Foundation’s “Best Chef: MidAtlantic” award. As an integral part of the Vetri Family, Brad is one of the chef/partners in the group’s recent projects, including Osteria Moorestown, Pizzeria Vetri and the forthcoming, Lo Spiedo. A proud New Jersey native, Brad currently lives in Collingswood, NJ, with his wife Kim and their three children. The 1999 vintage was of exceptional quality, with a low yield; only 7000 cases were produced.
