Annual Report - Girl Scouts of North East Ohio
Girl Scouts of North East Ohio 2015 Annual Report Oct. 1, 2014 – Sept. 30, 2015 Girl Scouts of North East Ohio connects girls to a world of possibilities in a positive and inclusive, girl-led environment. Girls are inspired to discover their passions and empowered to reach their full potential through a proven leadership development program. 2 GSNEO ANNUAL REPORT OCT 2013-SEPT 2014 Dear Friends of Girl Scouts, We are often asked if a 103-year old organization like Girl Scouts is still relevant. The answer is– Yes! In fact, we are needed now more than ever. Only 22 percent of girls say that being a leader is a top goal in their life. Not every girl needs to be a leader, but everyone deserves the option to lead. Girls are passionate about making a difference, but opportunities for leadership are scarce. Girls who shy away from leadership often do so because they fear being seen as bossy by others, and they fear not being liked. Adults who work with girls need to help them develop the skills to cope with these issues – skills such as conflict resolution, healthy communication, and problem solving – so that these barriers no longer prevent girls from stepping into more public leadership roles. We know that girls are most willing to lead when leadership is defined as collaborative, inclusive, and concerned with making a positive difference. Girls also need to see more women stepping up to leadership positions. If they can’t see it, they can’t be it. For 103 years, Girl Scouts has been the nation’s largest leadership organization for girls, helping girls build skills around affecting change in themselves, our communities, and the world at large. Girl Scouts is relevant – and part of the solution. We are proud of the work we do at Girl Scouts of North East Ohio with the support of friends like you who are dedicated to advancing our mission. When you invest in girls, you give them real world, hands-on experiences that empower them to innovate, create, and reach their potential. As we eagerly look to the future, we hope you will be a part of the movement that is creating the next generation of leaders. Yours in Girl Scouting, Brenda Heidinger GSNEO Board Chair Jane Christyson GSNEO Chief Executive Officer GSNEO ANNUAL REPORT OCT 2014 - SEPT 2015 1 OUR MISSION Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. GIRL SCOUT PROMISE On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law. GIRL SCOUT LAW I will do my best to be: honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout. 2 GSNEO ANNUAL REPORT OCT 2014 - SEPT 2015 BOARD OF DIRECTORS CHAIRPERSON Brenda Heidinger, Mahoning County Alcohol & Drug Addiction Board FIRST VICE CHAIR Laura Watson, Thompson Hine LLP SECOND VICE CHAIR Catherine Lippert, ProdOptic, LLC TREASURER Joan Villarreal, Community Volunteer SECRETARY Dawn Marie Lecklikner, The Equity Engineering Group MEMBERS-AT-LARGE Jacquelyn Adams, Community Volunteer Diana Bilimoria, Ph.D., Case Western Reserve University Hope Bradley Hnat, The Salvation Army Northeast Ohio Division Paula Chesser, Robert W. These young ladies were definitely up to the challenge! They built and fine-tuned their Soap Box Derby cars to race down the track at 30 mph. The girls learned how to identify and use tools; identify car parts and understand what they do; and learned shop safety. Teams also learned marketing skills by securing sponsorships and designing the logo, banner, car and t-shirts. The Trefoilers (Troop 90469) made history at the race being one of the first Girl Scout sponsored teams to race in the Gravity Racing Challenge. They advanced to the top 16 of all the cars in the Super Stock division. Team Samoas (Troop 71364) and Team Thin Mints (Troop 71364) also competed. GSNEO ANNUAL REPORT OCT 2014 - SEPT 2015 7 GIRL SCOUT COOKIES Today’s Girl Scouts are tomorrow’s business leaders Imagine getting your start in business in the world’s largest girl-led enterprise. Girl Scouts do! Some of the nation’s most successful leaders started in Girl Scouting, gaining leadership and financial literacy in the iconic Girl Scout Cookie Program. In addition to the 5 Skills: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics, a new webbased component teaches girls vital skills for the modern economy. Digital Cookie helps girls run and manage their Girl Scout Cookie business online. Girls can set their cookie goals, track their progress, manage orders and inventory, learn Internet safety skills, and more—all while they earn age-specific badges and explore ways to help others by investing their earnings back into their communities. GSNEO ANNUAL REPORT OCT 2014 - SEPT 2015 9 Did you know that six out of ten girls stop doing what they love because they feel bad about the way they look? Thousands of Girl Scout members from Northeast Ohio spent the evening at the SouthPark Mall Lock-In, where they engaged in fun, inspirational activities. The theme “Healthy Selfie” encouraged girls to explore a life of health and happiness. Girls learned about healthy eating, exercise, setting goals, keeping 10 GSNEO ANNUAL REPORT OCT 2014 - SEPT 2015 balance in their lives, following their passions, and happiness. GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN! The Girl Scout Leadership Experience includes council-sponsored programs, events, and trips 1. First annual trip to Girl Scout founder’s birthplace in Savannah, Ga 2. Girl Scout Day at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo 3. Exclusive STOMP performance, activities, and behind the scenes tour at Playhouse Square 4. Girl Scouts assembled fleece hats and scarves for “Crafting for a Cause” at JoAnn Fabric and Crafting Stores 5. Techbridge partnership offers Girl Scouts hands-on, real world experience in engineering GSNEO ANNUAL REPORT OCT 2014 - SEPT 2015 11 12 GSNEO ANNUAL REPORT OCT 2014 - SEPT 2015 GIRL SCOUT CAMP Where every day is a new adventure! The moment girls find out they are going to camp, excitement erupts. The ear-to-ear grins and shouts of joy are proof enough that Girl Scouts of North East Ohio knows how to turn learning into fun-filled memories. As if girls don’t have enough to brag about when they return from camp, GSNEO is giving them even more reason to look forward to their next trip to Camp Ledgewood, Camp Timberlane, and Camp Sugarbush. Zip lines, high ropes, stargazing, and water-works join the recreational highlights, providing girls from kindergarten through high school with hands-on, outdoor activities that help them build leadership skills, conquer fears, make new friends and learn about the environment. Each of the new camp features, while providing hours of fun and entertainment, also deliver some kind of character-building aspect. CAMP LEDGEWOOD High Ropes Challenge Course Those who take risks, communicate well, push their physical limits, and explore leadership can find out how far they can go. Also at Camp Ledgewood, municipal water negotiations continue. This is a slow process due to the number of entities involved. Other options for water include additional storage tanks and wells. GSNEO ANNUAL REPORT OCT 2014 - SEPT 2015 13 14 GSNEO ANNUAL REPORT OCT 2014 - SEPT 2015 CAMP TIMBERLANE Aquatics Center The Trefoil-shaped splash pad, new pool house and zero-entry swimming pool were completed just in time for summer camp! CAMP SUGARBUSH Low Ropes Challenge Course The nice thing about teamwork is that you get to work together to achieve a common goal. Also at Camp Sugarbush, the new Astronony Center and Woodland Pavilion are available for year-round troop camping. GSNEO ANNUAL REPORT OCT 2014 - SEPT 2015 15 WOMEN OF DISTINCTION & ADVANCING WOMEN AWARDS Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship This annual event honored 15 exceptional women and three high school Girl Scouts who have modeled the courage, confidence and character that Girl Scouts embodies. Juliette’s outstanding leadership was matched by her stewardship when she converted the carriage house at her home into the first Girl Scout national headquarters, and she gifted the property to Girl Scouts in her will. Juliette’s bequest was the beginning of planned giving to Girl Scouts. In her memory, we have established the Juliette Low Legacy Society to thank and honor friends of Girl Scouting who have chosen to make Girl Scouts of North East Ohio part of their legacies and a beneficiary of their estate plans. With their foresight and planning, these donors are crucial to ensuring that our Council will be able to provide future generations of Girl Scouts with opportunities to reach their fullest potential.
