DOT IS TAKEN OFF WHEN ITEM COMES IN. • BLUE: MORE OF ITEM ON TOP SHELF DOT SYSTEM CONT. • YELLOW: ITEM IN CASES,PK IN BULK ROOM AREA-WE PUT BULK LOCATION ON THE DOT AT IT’S ―HOME‖ IN MAIN AREA. • RED: DISCONTINUED – DS-DOESN’T SELL – NA-NOT AVAILABLE ANYMORE OTHER HELPFUL IDEAS • COLOR AND NUMBER CODING – WE DID EACH KIND OF TUBING IN A DIFFERENT COLOR – WE NUMBER THE TUBING BOXES BY SIZE, IE: # 16, #17, ETC. – WE NUMBER GADGETS, TOO. • SPATULAS, FORCEPS, SCALPEL ETC MORE IDEAS • WE MADE SAMPLE BOARDS OF VIALS, STOPPERS, SCALPELS, ETC AND PUT THEM UP BY THE CHECKOUT, WITH THE INVENTORY NUMBER, OUR SEQUENCE NUMBER AND LOCATION • OTHERWISE, CUSTOMERS WOULD HAVE TO PULL OUT EACH BOX TO SEE WHICH ONE, THEN MAY PUT BACK IN WRONG BOX LAST THINGS • FILL ODD SPOTS WITH ODD ITEMS THAT DON’T REALLY FIT • READJUST WIDTH OF PARTS BINS, # OF FACING, ACCORDING TO HOW MUCH YOU USE. • REMEMBER, LESSER USED ITEMS OR SIZES ON FIRST SHELF OR BOTTOM SHELF MORE LAST THINGS • WHEN FILLING SHELVES, START WITH ITEMS ON THE BOTTOM SHELF FIRST • THEN PUT SHELF IN ABOVE THAT, CONTINUING ON TO THE TOP. • OTHERWISE YOU END OF WITH THE BOTTOM SHELF WRONG AND YOU HAVE TO START ALL OVER AGAIN. LABELING • DON’T LABEL THE PARTS BINS OR THE SHELVES UNTIL ALL OF THEM ARE IN PLACE AND YOU HAVE THE RIGHT WIDTH BIN YOU WANT. THIS CAN CHANGE QUITE A BIT UNTIL YOU ARE SETTLED • AFTER SOMETHING THAT IS DISCONTINUED,PULL THE BOX AND ADJUST OTHER ITEMS ON SHELF LABELING CONT • WE USE OUR BARCODE LABELS ON MOST OF THE BINS, TO STOCK ITEMS IN THE RIGHT PLACE • OUR BARCODES GIVE THE LOCATION: IE: M-K4-6 IS IN THE MAIN STKRM, IN SECTION K, WHICH IS AN END UNIT, FOURTH SECTION AND ON 6TH SHELF. • YOU CAN DO BIN # ALSO, BUT WE DON’T LIKE THAT LABELING/ID CHIPS • WE ALSO PUT IN EACH BIN, OR ATTACHED ON THE LIP OF SHELF IN A LITTLE OPEN ENVELOPE, 2 BLUE CHIPS. THIS EACH HAVE THE BARCODE WITH INFO ON THEM. SOME ITEMS YOU REALLY CAN’T ATTACH A BARCODE TO, LIKE RUBBER STOPPERS. SO WHEN WE TAKE ON FROM BIN, WE CAN USE BLUE CHIP ID’S CONT. • THAT AT THE CHECKOUT. THE SECOND ONE IN THERE HELPS IDENTIFY THE CHIP YOU HAVE IS GOING IN THE RIGHT SPACE. • WITHOUT THE BARCODE OR LABEL ON THE FRONT OR THE CHIPS, WHEN THE BIN BECOMES EMPTY, YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT, EXACTLY, GOES THERE.(UNLESS YOU ARE GYPZY…) MORE ON LABELING • WE USE AN EIGHT DIGET ALFANUMERIC SYSTEM: TWO LETTERS, THEN EIGHT NUMBERS • THE TWO LETTERS GIVE A GROUP ID:BK=BEAKERS, EF=ERLENMEYER FLASK, VF= VOLUMETRIC FLASK, TU: TUBING, CY:CYLINDER, PP = PIPETTES MS = MICROSCOPE SUPPLIES, MC = MISCELLANEOUS (COLUMNS, ETC ) CHEMICAL ID NUMBER • CH=CHEMICALS, REGULAR ONES • VH=PSUEDOCHEMICAL THAT WE DON’T TRACK CRADLE TO GRAVE: SAND, DRIERITE, RESINS, METAL WIRE, GLUES, PAINT AND ENZYMES(THEY ARE SO SMALL AND USED ONE TIME IT’S NOT WORTH TRACKING SURPLUS CHEMICALS • CHEMICALS WE HAVE INHERITED FOR LABS, LIKE WHEN A PROFESSOR RETIRES OR REDUCES HIS/HER STOCK, BUT ARE STILL GOOD. • WE PUT THEM INTO OUR STOCK AND INVENTORY, SO IF SOLD THEY ARE STILL TRACKED TO PROPER LAB, • HOWEVER, WE DO NOT CHARGE ANYTHING FOR THEM. SURPLUS CHEM, CONT • THIS REINTRODUCING SURPLUS HAS ITS PRO & CON, BUT IT FALLS UNDER THE FED.WASTE REDUCTION/MINIMUMIZATION ACT. HOWEVER, YOU HAVE TO DETERMINE IF THEY ARE STILL FINE, OTHERWISE THEY SHOULD BE DISPOSED OF. SHARE WITH OTHER DEPARTMENTS/PROF TO ELIMINATE THIS SURPLUS CHEM, CONT • THIS IS ESPECIALLY USEFUL IF YOU OR YOUR WASTE MANAGEMENT OR RISK AND SAFETY OFFICE HAVE A LIST OF ALL CHEMICALS ON CAMPUS. • ALSO USEFULLY ESPECIALLY ON DYES AND INDICATORS WHERE SOMEONE ONLY NEEDS A GRAM. • WE USE THE BARCODE WITH S AS THE LAST DIGIT ITEM UNITS & INV #S • WE USE ID # WITH GROUPINGS FOR VARIOUS PACKING SIZES • BK003400 EACHES • BK003401 PK/6 • BK003402 CS/36 • BK003403 CS/24 THE VERY LAST THINGS • GO THROUGH AND LOOK FOR WAYS TO IMPROVE: OUR #1 SELLING ITEM IS GLOVES, SO WE HAVE THEM CLOSE TO THE FRONT • TAKE A BREAK, COME BACK AND WALK THROUGH, IF SOMETHING DOESN’T WORK, MAKE ADJUSTMENTS • MAKE YOUR STOCKROOM UNIQUE WITH SOMMMMEE KIND OF DÉCOR THE VERY LAST • • • • THANK THOSE WHO HAVE HELP HAVE A PARTY ENJOY YOU NEW HABITAT! TAKE A BREAK, BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO REDO ALL THE LOCATION IN YOUR INVENTORY SYSTEM • DON’T REINVENT THE WHEEL: • QUESTIONS: EMAIL OR CALL ME!
