INTERVAL DIRECTORS NOTE Recently there has been a lot of talk about whether culture; theatre, art, films are important, and indeed governments are very keen to limit funding for arts organisations with excuses of budget cuts. But imagine if we were not allowed art? No freedom of choice in music, theatre, painting? The importance of the arts rises when banished by an oppressive society and as humans we find ways of including art even within barren prison walls; painting on brick, smuggled books, music transposed on crude machines. In Shakespeare’s day theatre was in constant battle with the establishment and fought hard to have theatres opened, running and vibrant. Theatre can be a protest, (among other themes Shakespeare’s Richard III can be seen as a treatise on Queen Elizabeth’s ponderous decision on succession) and many plays have hidden meanings. Art can also be solace in times of duress and in some countries, escape from a heartless society. The idea of art being banished completely - as with many countries in various upheavals - even in our times - led me to think of a play being performed by players hidden away from their oppressors as a private protest and as a solace for those who have to keep their spirt alive. Shakespeare’s Richard III offers poetry and protest, and whatever it wants to be within its written walls. - MARK KILMURRY RICHARD III REHEARSAL SHOTS BY CLARE HAWLEY
