From my office window, I see the daily and steady movement of workers and trucks. Footings have been laid and concrete is being poured to secure the foundations. This is how the construction area looks as of mid-May. Our employee of the month for April 2016 is Federico Mata. Federico has been with The Athenaeum for three years and this is his first time being honored as employee of the month. Federico is from Zacapa, Guatemala and moved to the United States in 1996. Prior to working at The Athenaeum, Federico spent 7 years working at the JPL cafeteria. He has also worked at Capistrano’s and Rod’s Grill. Federico first started out plating meals before transitioning to the sauté station. He enjoys working on the team with fellow kitchen staff members, especially during the Easter and Mother’s Day brunches. Federico’s commitment to teamwork and his positive attitude make him the best choice as our April Employee of the Month. Federico and Arcely, his wife of eleven years, have two daughters, Aidy and Arely. When not working hard in The Athenaeum kitchen, Federico enjoys playing as a midfielder in the Duarte Soccer League and watching professional soccer. Many members have asked me if the Rath al Fresco will open this summer. Of course! Summer would not be the same on the Caltech campus and at The Athenaeum without the Rath al Fresco. The old time favorites are back on the menu – fire grilled fresh artichoke, beer can chicken, pulled pork tacos, potato and pea samosas, and the fish tacos plate. New items include a crispy spicy tuna roll, vegetarian gyro, the “al fresco crunch” which is a brisket quesadilla with green onions, corn tortilla crisp, guacamole, sour cream and pico de gallo. At the bar, the ever popular mojito stays a staple along with some light summer wines that will be selected and featured by Food and Beverage Director Jerry Rodriguez. Jerry will also make sure there is a continuous rotation of great beers on tap. Bar opens at 5:00 p.m. and no reservations required. Come and join the fun! We honor and celebrate our employees on June 2 when Caltech gives out its annual service awards. One of our chefs, Fernando Amador, has been at Caltech and The Athenaeum for 30 years. Other honorees include Roberto Elias and Chevo Ocampo, for 15 years of service; Mateo Amador, Michael Jones, Margaret McVey Thomas and Jesus Valles, for 10 years of service. I look forward to see you at The Athenaeum. Please drop by my office when you are next at the club. Or, see you at the Rath al Fresco. Congratulations, Federico, on a job well done!
