Hello HOG Friends,
This past month of February was cold, but at
least we were able to get on our Harleys and ride
again. Our trip to Meridian to have lunch with
the Chunky River HOG Chapter was chilly, but
good. The outing to McComb for lunch at the
Dinner Bell and tour of the train depot was a lot
of fun. Almost forgot about our ride to Lorman
and lunch at the Old Country Store – can’t leave
that ride out. It looks like the weather is finally
changing for the better.
We had our February B.N.O. at Jerry’s Fish
House and had a really good turnout. If you
weren’t able to attend you missed a good time to
fellowship with other members and have a good
meal. B.N.O. for March will be at Reed Pierce’s in
Byram, so check the calendar and plan to come.
Show (doing three performances each day), a
Fallen Bikers Memorial Exhibit and the all new
Indian Motorcycles will be on display. Come
check it out.
I want to remind everyone about the Louisiana
HOG Rally in Lafayette, LA scheduled for April
3rd to the 5th. We are planning to meet at the
Jackson Harley Dealership on the 3rd and depart
from there. It is not too late to register if you are
interested in going. This trip is going to be a lot
of fun, especially with the performances of the
Marshall Tucker Band and R.E.O. Speed Wagon. I
have talked to other Mississippi HOG chapters
and many of them plan to attend. It would be
great if we showed up with the most members.
Don’t forget to keep up with the miles you
ride. Bring your miles to the March meeting.

The Great Southern Motorcycle Expo event is
March 22nd and 23rd at the Trade Mart on the
fairgrounds in downtown Jackson. I’ve been told
they are expecting about 60 vendor booths. A
single day armband is $10.00 and a two day
armband is $20.00. Some of the features at this
year’s show will be the Team FMX Extreme Stunt

Minutes – February 11, 2014
The Jackson Harley Owners Group meeting was held on February 11, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. at Harley
Davidson of Jackson. There were 31 people in attendance. Dan Ellis opened the meeting in prayer.
John Murphey welcomed the group and introduced the current officers. There were five new
members in attendance.
Genifer Freeman read the minutes and the minutes were approved. Mollie Murphey gave the
membership report. Dues are to be paid at the end of February. There are 50 paid members
currently. More than 300 people are currently receiving e-mails.
Bike Night Out was changed to Jerry’s Fish House in Florence this month. The March location will
be at Reid Pearson’s in Byram.
The Motorcycle Bike Expo will be next month and we need volunteers. New this year, volunteers
will need to pay to get into the expo.
The Trail of Honor still needs volunteers.
This Saturday, February 15, from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. there will be a certification meeting for firing the
cannon. Please sign-up downstairs in the dealership.
Head Road Captain, Bobby Loper, thanked everyone who rode last Saturday. They ate at the Old
Country Store in Lorman on Hwy 61. He mentioned he’ll have safety items on his bike for the rides.
Some of the items include a first aid kit and jumper cables. Upcoming rides: Chunky River ride
February 15 for free pulled pork barbecue. Riding on the highway there to be sure we are there in
time for lunch which starts at 11:30 a.m. The group will be meeting at Love’s truck stop at 9 a.m.
February 21 will be riding to McComb. We’ll be meeting at Love’s TruckStop at 8 a.m., leaving at
8:30 a.m.
March 8 we’ll going to Philadelphia, MS, meeting at Harley dealership. Time to be announced.

SOUTHERN CHICKEN GUMBO
Submitted by Genifer Freeman
Prep time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 30 minutes
Serves: 6 people
1 lb. Jalapeno Cheese Sausage (we prefer
venison)
1 Tbsp. Olive Oil
1 12oz. frozen bag mirpox cajun style blend
(onions, celery, green peppers)
2 cloves chopped garlic
1 12oz. frozen gumbo vegetable mix (okra,
corn, onions, celery and red peppers)
2 13oz. cans of chicken breast
3 14.5oz. cans of chicken broth
1 10oz. can Rotel tomatoes and green chiles
1 cup minute rice (can substitute 2 cups
cooked rice)
Sriracha to taste (@ 2 swirls around pot)
Sauté first four ingredients until onions are
translucent and sausage is cooked, add
chicken and sauté a few minutes more, add
remaining ingredients. Simmer until okra is
cooked approximately 20 minutes.
Serve with a side of jalapeno corn bread* or
garlic bread.
JALAPENO CORN BREAD
1 box Jiffy cornbread mix
1 egg
1/3 cup milk
1 Tbs. Mayonnaise
½ cup shredded cheese
10 pickled jalapeno slices chopped
Preheat oven to 395 degrees. Preheat cast iron
skillet with 2 Tbsp. butter. Mix all ingredients
and put in hot skillet. Cook for 15-20 minutes
until bread is cooked.

My Visit with Mike “Curly” Sumrall

A portion of my participation in the ride
to Meridian was to do an interview with
Mike “Curly” Sumrall, Rally Coordinator
for the 2014 Mississippi H.O.G. Rally
in Natchez on September 18, 19 and 20.
Finding Mike was not difficult as all I
had to do was locate the individual
everyone was gathered around. When I
introduced myself to Mike, he suggested
we find a location where we could
prepare my article for the newsletter.
Little did I know Mike is also a member
of H.O.G. Chapter 2496, serving as
Director in 2007, 2006 and 2004, 2002. Mike
also served as Assistant Director several
times and Road Captain,
Besides serving Harley riders in 2496, Mike also has been important to Harley riders
throughout Mississippi and Louisiana, serving as Rally Coordinator of the Mississippi
H.O.G. Rally, which attracts riders from Mississippi, Louisiana, many other states and
even foreign countries. Not bad for someone who shares membership in our chapter.
Mike has accomplished a lot in his riding career.
I enjoyed the stories of his riding experiences; riding throughout the lower forty-eight
states, the Canadian Provinces and his many biker camp outs. I hope he kept a diary of
his riding adventures.

During our visit, a continuous stream of riders stopped by to greet Mike with a handshake
and warm smile. Obviously, Mike has touched the lives of many motorcycle riders. What a

great compliment.
A Message from Ride Captain

There's a lot to know when we are
riding as a group, every thing from
riding and communicating with the
whole group. This is because we are
not only responsible for our own safety
but to share responsibility for making
sure the ride is safe and fun for every
one involved. We have to go by the
rules of the law and respect and obey all
laws. You have to ride in the limits of
your own skills and knowing the
capabilities of your own motorcycle. If
you are a new rider you may want to
take a riders training class offered by
our Harley Dealership.
The group rides are one of the
greatest experiences and fun rides of
motorcycling. The fellowship of riding
with our friends, having fun and seeing
different sights are why we ride in our
chapter.
We are still planning new rides and a
long distance ride. I'm starting to plan
our group ride to the Smokey Mountains
and setting up the month and dates that
everyone can take off and make this
ride.

Students Competing in Skills USA
SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers
and industry working together to ensure
America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA helps
each student excel.
SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization
serving teachers and high school and college
students who are preparing for careers in trade,
technical and skilled service occupations,
including health occupations. It was formerly
known as VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of
America).
The above students from Mississippi high school
and community colleges were performing today
(February 26) at Harley-Davidson of Jackson.
Our Director, John Murphey organized this event
and Earl, Homer and the service staff did an
outstanding job of taking the students through
their required performance objectives. Seeing
those students carefully listening to the
technicians, performing their task and moving
to another station was very interesting. These
students had the experience of learning from an
experienced team in a real Harley service
center. Great job John, Earl, Homer and all the
staff for assisting our next generation of Harley
technicians.

Preparing for an early Saturday ride when the temperature is in the 30’s takes some dedication. That
was the case as my friend Gary Schwabe and I met at the intersection of Bozeman and Gluckstadt
Roads in Madison on our way to enjoy an early breakfast with friends and to Love’s Truck Stop for our
9:30 A. M. H.O.G. chapter ride to Meridian. Yes, some electrical connections do make cold weather
rides a lot more comfortable, even though the electric chord dangling from my jacket may indicate I
am not as “macho” as I once was. However, at this point in my life I am perfectly willing to let the
younger generation “layer up” and prove their toughness.
Arriving at Love’s Truck Stop found an impressive number of colorful bikes parked near the edge of
the parking lot. Riders were engaged in conversation and the sound of H.O.G. laughter permeated
the crispness of the early morning air. As 9:30 approached, more bikes arrived and the number rose
to upwards of 25, an impressive number to me. It was easy to tell this was going to be a great ride.
Following prayer, Ride Captain Bobby Loper and Chapter Director John Murphey divided the group to
make our interstate ride safer. The signal was given, kickstands came up and starter buttons were
pressed, resulting in a cumulative roar that turned Love’s Truck Stop heads our direction. Our ride
had begun. We exited Love’s as several bikes with flashing lights held traffic until the last bike was in
the road and headed toward I-20 East. Two groups of bikes on the highway is a pretty impressive
sight. Thanks to the watchful eyes and communication between the first and last bike in each group,
we were able to enjoy the ride to the fullest. Bobby Loper and John Murphey, along with Bill Dickson
and Eric Thornton did an outstanding job monitoring I-20 traffic all the way to Meridian.
We were provided free sandwiches and chips by the Meridian H.O.G. chapter. The food was great
and we found their members very friendly. Conversation with them was almost always centered
around motorcycles, our common link. Our chapter gives the Meridian Chapter of H.O.G. a big Gold
Star and hearty “Thank You” for your hospitality. We hope to see you again in the near future.
Due to other obligations, Gary and I had to return to our homes but, not quiet reaching the riding limit
for the day, our chapter continued to Philadelphia and a couple more hours enjoying the roads, sights
and sounds of Central Mississippi.
If you love riding and making friends, hook up with H.O.G. 2496 and have some fun. Every effort is
made to see that each rider has a safe, enjoyable riding experience. Remember, it does not matter
the bike you ride, the goal is to Ride and Have Fun.
