Introduction
The ComSonics’ Sniffer Sleuth II is a handheld cable leakage detector with
vehicle mounting capability. It is the flagship model in our line of cable leakage
equipment. The Sleuth II is an attractive and easy to use tool. Five buttons on the
display panel and a multifunction trigger type control integrated into the handle
blend with the ergonomic contours of the device. The buttons operate the
functions needed in normal use, such as; power, operational functions, backlight,
and the loudness of our famous historic Sniffer warble tone.
The Sleuth II has a built-in folding dipole antenna for handheld use and is capable
of operation in either of two receiving modes based on the signal source used for
leakage monitoring.
Standard TV
Video Carrier
Sense Mode
In this mode, the Sleuth II utilizes our Leakage Validation
Indicator™ function to isolate real leakage from ambient
noise, as emitted by hair driers, vacuum cleaners, blenders,
food processors, etc. This feature, along with a 25 kHz or
50 kHz frequency offset from a neighboring system’s channel carrier offers the best available solution for making sure
the leakage read is your leakage and only your leakage.
Sniffer II/III
Signal
Source Mode
In this mode, the Sleuth II receives and displays the Signal
Source’s carrier including the actual warble tone generated
by the Source. The receiver’s leakage identification function
detects the unique characteristics embedded in the Source’s
signal.
A Docking Cradle is available for use in a vehicle. With the Docking Cradle, the receiver is powered from the vehicle and receives leakage signals from an external
monopole antenna. It also provides connections to an external audio amplifier and
a GeoSniffer Nexus Data Acquisition Unit.
A PC based Configuration Utility software kit is available separately to customize
Favorite Channel Selections, Receiver Mode, Level Units-of-Measure, Distance
Units-of-Measure, and Peak Hold Delay Time. The kit provides the workstation
application and interface cable necessary to communicate with and personalize
the Sleuth II to conform to your system specific parameters.
Unpacking - The Sleuth II, its charger, and any ordered accessories are included
in a shipping container designed to provide the maximum protection during shipment. Immediately upon receipt, inspect the container and contents for signs of
physical damage. Notify the freight forwarder of any damage detected.
Battery Care - An internal Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) rechargeable battery pack powers
the Sleuth II. Charge the battery for a minimum of 3 hours, especially before using
for the first time. Make sure the Sleuth II is powered off to fully charge the battery.
The Sleuth II automatically powers off when the battery charge condition is low to
protect the battery from excessive discharge.
Caution! Failure to properly charge the battery may result in reduced battery life.
Only use the included AC Charger, the Docking Cradle, or the Vehicle Charger to
charge the Sleuth II. Use of other AC adapters or chargers may cause equipment
failure, create a safety hazard, and void the warranty. Do not charge the receiver
for more than 24 hours.
See the ComSonics publication titled Rechargeable Batteries & Getting the Most
from Them for more information on battery maintenance.

Sniffer Sleuth II
General Operation
The Sleuth II display panel is equipped with five function buttons. Press the
Power button momentarily to turn the receiver on or off. To change a function
setting, press the desired button and select a setting with the Trigger Control, in
the handle, by using a trigger up or trigger down action. The selected setting is
activated 3 seconds after the last button press. The Trigger is the audio volume
control when no other user setup function is active. A single press of the trigger
or any function button activates the backlight for 10 seconds.
Audio Volume Control - trigger up to step the audio volume from the current
setting up to step 5. Trigger down to step from the current setting down to step 0.
The available steps are: 0 (audio off), 1, 2, 3*, 4, and 5 (maximum). The audio
volume control is enabled only when no other setup function is active. The volume
step is displayed temporarily in place of the distance setting.
F-Chan (Favorite Channel) - Trigger up to cycle the tuned channel through F1*,
F2, F3, and then back to F1. Trigger down reverses the sequence.
Squelch - Trigger up to cycle the squelch level from the current setting up through
the choices of: 0 µV/m (audio always on), 5 µV/m, 10 µV/m, 20 µV/m, 50 µV/m*,
100 µV/m, 1999 µV/m (audio always off), and then back to 0 µV/m. Trigger down
reverses the sequence. The Squelch setting is displayed temporarily in place of
the level reading. Equivalent squelch level steps for other Units of Measure.
Distance - Trigger up to cycle the distance setting from the current setting through
the choices of: 10 feet*, 30 feet, 75 feet, 150 feet, and then back to 10 feet.
Trigger down reverses the sequence. Equivalent distance settings for meters.
An additional uncalibrated 1 foot setting (reduced sensitivity) can be enabled
(firmware 1.8 or greater) with the Configuration Utility. The 1 foot setting is only
available when feet and µV/m are selected. See the Configuration Utility section.
Sense - Trigger up to cycle the bar graph sensitivity from the current setting
through the choices of: x1 (1999 µV/m full scale)*, x10 (200 µV/m full scale), x20
(100 µV/m full scale), and then back to x1. Trigger down reverses the sequence.
The Sense setting is displayed temporarily in place of the level reading as: r1, r10,
or r20. Equivalent scale ranges for other Units of Measure.
Notes:
• The trigger function reverts to audio volume control 3 seconds after the last button press.
• The Sleuth II powers up in same functional state as power down. The current function
settings are stored on power down and are in place on the next power up.

Display Panel
The Display Panel provides information on the tuned channel, distance setting,
battery charge, signal level, units-of-measure, signal type, and relative signal
level.
Favorite Channel - F1, F2, or F3 and its associated frequency is the channel
selected for monitoring leakage signals. Press the F-Chan button and use the
trigger to select the desired channel. The frequency and mode for each of the
three F-Chan’s can be customized through the Configuration Utility.
Distance - The distance compensation setting adjusts the signal level reading
to approximate the equivalency of the measurement being made at a distance
of 10 feet (3 meters). Press the Distance button and use the trigger to set the
distance to a value correlating to the actual distance to the leakage source. The
units-of-measure for distance is factory set to Feet. The Distance units can be
changed to meters with the Configuration Utility.
Battery Level - A fully charged battery is indicated by 4 bars. Each bar represents
approximately 25% capacity. When the last bar goes out, the battery outline remains on and the audio is muted. The unit automatically powers off when the
battery is low to prevent damage to the battery pack.
Signal Level - The signal level reading is the intensity of the received signal
based on the distance setting. The units-of-measure for signal level is factory
set to µV/m. The level units can be changed to dBµV/m or dBµV with the
Configuration Utility.
Signal Validation - The Sleuth II contains two methods of validating the received
signal to be leakage or noise. In the Video Carrier sense mode, Leakage is displayed if the received signal is a single distinct carrier or Noise is displayed if the
received signal is of a broad spectrum nature. In the Sniffer II/III Signal Source
mode, Leakage is displayed if the received signal originated from a Sniffer II/III
Signal Source or otherwise Noise is displayed. The three factory set F-Chan selections are set for the Video Carrier sense mode. The signal validation operating
mode can be changed through the Configuration Utility.
Bar Graph - The bar graph indicator displays the relative signal strength based
on the current sensitivity setting for full scale of 100, 200, or 1999 µV/m. The
indicator operates in a peak hold mode and resets the peak indication at predetermined intervals. The peak hold reset interval is factory set at 1 second. The
reset interval can be changed (0 to 60 seconds) with the Configuration Utility.
Equivalent scale ranges for other Units of Measure.

Sniffer Sleuth II
Field Use Setup
The Sleuth II delivers optimum performance when the following settings and
functions are tailored to the current measurement environment.
Built-in Antenna Adjustment
Squelch Setting
Tuned Channel
Sensitivity Setting
Distance Setting
Audio Volume Setting
Built-in Antenna - Unfold and extend both antenna elements perpendicular to the
body of the Sleuth II. Refer to the Built-in Antenna Reference Table for the proper
element length according to the channel frequency. In situations requiring a nearfield probe analysis, collapse and fold back both elements. This creates a narrow
reception pattern to the front of the receiver.
Tuned Channel - Usually the cable system leakage manager designates a particular channel or frequency for leakage monitoring. The Sleuth II provides for
user selection of three favorite channels, F-Chan.
Distance Setting - The distance setting is designed to simulate typical distances
encountered in cable leakage measurements: 10 feet is the normal distance,
30 feet is for street-to-suspended cable, 75 feet is for street-to-home, and
150 feet is for street-to-back easement. The distance setting changes the level
reading and the bar graph to compensate for user to leak distances greater than
the normal 10 feet but does not change the receiver’s basic sensitivity. For example, if the level reading is 20 µV/m with the distance setting at 10 feet and the
distance setting is changed to 30 feet, the level reading will then be 60 µV/m.
If the distance setting is changed to 75 feet, the level reading will then be
150 µV/m. If the distance setting is changed to 150 feet, the level reading will
then be 300 µV/m. The proper setting for the distance is the setting that matches
closest the actual distance between the user and the leakage point. The level
reading will then be approximate what it would be if the user was 10 feet from the
leakage point.
For locating extremely high leakage levels, an additional uncalibrated 1 foot setting (reduced sensitivity) can be enabled in units with firmware 1.8 or greater with
the Configuration Utility. Only available with feet and µV/m settings.
Squelch Setting - The squelch setting determines the minimum displayed signal
level required for the receiver to produce an audible warble tone. At squelch settings other than 0 or 1999 µV/m, the Leakage label must be on before the warble
tone sounds. Selections for normal operation are: 5, 10, 20, 50, or 100 µV/m.
Select 0 µV/m for audio always on or 1999 µV/m for audio always off. Press the
Squelch button to review the current squelch setting.
Sensitivity Setting - The sensitivity setting changes the scale range of the bar
graph display and the relative audio level. Setting x1 has the largest dynamic
range of 2 to 1999 µV/m. Setting x10 has a range of 2 to 200 µV/m and setting
x20 has a range of 2 to 100 µV/m. Select a setting that optimizes the visible
movement of the bar graph and the audio warble loudness. Press the Sense
button to review the current sensitivity setting.
Audio Volume Setting - At signal levels greater than the Squelch Setting, the
Sleuth II produces an audible warble tone when Leakage is indicated. The warble
tone varies in loudness according to the volume setting and the bar graph indication. In the Video Carrier mode, the warble tone is internally generated. In the
Sniffer II/III Source mode, the warble tone is the demodulated signal of the Sniffer
II/III Source. Use the Trigger Control, when no other setup function is active, to
select a setting to optimize the warble loudness with variations in signal level.

If running Windows XP or XP SP1, temporarily disconnect the computer from the
Internet. This can be done by either removing the network cable from the computer or by disabling the network card by accessing the ‘Control Panel\Network
and Dial-Up Connections’, right clicking on the appropriate connection and selecting ‘Disable’ from the menu. The connection can be enabled after the installation
is complete. This is not necessary under Windows XP SP2, SP3, or Vista if
configured to ‘ask before connecting to Windows Update’. Windows XP SP2 and
Vista settings for Windows Update can be changed through ‘Control
Panel\System’. Select the ‘Hardware’ tab and click ‘Windows Update’.
Note: The Sleuth II displays ‘SEr’ when connected to the computer.

Sniffer Sleuth II
Step 1
After the application is installed, connect the
Sleuth II (powered on) to an available USB
port on the computer with the supplied
interface cable. The Microsoft composite
device driver is automatically loaded silently
in the background. Once the composite
device driver is installed, the Windows
Found New Hardware Wizard launches.
With no available Internet connection or
Windows XP SP2/Vista is configured to ask
before connecting to Windows Update, this
screen is shown. Select ‘No, not this time’
from the options available and then click
Next to proceed with the installation.
Warning! If there is an available Internet connection, Windows XP will silently
connect to the Windows Update website and install any suitable driver it finds for
the device in preference to the driver manually selected.
Select ‘Install from a list or specific location
(Advanced)’ as shown and then click Next.
Select ‘Search for the best driver in these locations’ and check ‘Include this location in
the search’. Enter the file path ‘C: \ Sleuth II
One Foot \ FTDI \ VCP WINXP - CSI PID’ or
browse to it by clicking the browse button.
Once the file path is entered into the box,
click Next to proceed.
If Windows is configured to warn when unsigned
(non-WHQL certified) drivers are about to be
installed, this screen is displayed. Click ‘Continue
Anyway’ to continue the installation. If Windows is
configured to ignore file signature warnings, this
message does not appear.

of the USB driver installation.
Step 2
The COM port emulation driver is loaded as indicated in the following steps.
The Found New Hardware Wizard will
launch automatically to install the COM port
emulation driver. Select ‘No, not this time’
from the options and click Next to proceed

Verify the USB Driver Installation.
Open the Device Manager located
in ‘Control Panel\System’. Select the
‘Hardware’ tab and click ‘Device
Manger’. Select ‘View’ and ‘Devices
by type’. Click on Ports(COM&LPT).
The unit appears as ‘ComSonics’
Sleuth II (COMx)’ but only when
connected and powered on with
‘SEr’ on the display.
Troubleshooting the USB Driver Installation
Windows forces a reboot after installing a device
This can occur if an application is accessing a file while the New Hardware Wizard
is trying to copy it. This may occur with the FTD2XX.DLL file. If installing a D2XX
device, select ‘do not to restart the computer’. Then unplug and plug in the cable
to allow the device to reinitialize. Restarting the computer allows the device to
work correctly.
Driver installation fails and gives error code 10
Windows error code 10 indicates a hardware error or failed driver installation. This
error may appear if a device has insufficient power to operate correctly (e.g.
plugged into a bus powered hub with other devices), or may indicate a more
serious hardware problem. Also, it may be an indication of incorrectly installed
USB root hub drivers.
Windows displays an error and terminates installation
If this message is displayed, Windows has been
configured to block the installation of any drivers
that are not WHQL certified.
To successfully install the device, the driver
signing options can be changed to either warn
or ignore to allow the installation to complete.
To change the current driver signing setting, go
to ‘Control Panel\System’, click on the ‘Hardware’
tab and then click ‘Driver Signing’. Select the
desired signing option.

Sniffer Sleuth II
Battery Replacement
The Sleuth II is powered by a 7.2V lithium ion (Li-Ion) rechargeable battery pack
contained in the handle. Everyday use of the unit and recharging will eventually
require battery replacement.
To replace the Sleuth II battery, remove the screws holding the hand grips in
place. Remove the hand grips. Note the placement and orientation of the original
battery. The battery may vary from the illustration below. Carefully pull out the
battery.
The battery is plugged into a connector on the trigger circuit board assembly. The
battery connector is held in place with a latch. Press the latch tab on the connector and pull to remove. Insert the new battery connector into the trigger board
connector (observe latch tab position) and push until it latches with a click.
Insert the battery pack into the handle in the original placement. When the battery
pack is fully seated, place the wiring as not to interfere with or be pinched by the
hand grips. Position the hand grips and insert the screws. Do not over tighten.
Important:
A new battery must be fully charged before the first use.
Charge the battery for a minimum of 3 hours before the first use.
If it is not fully charged before the first use, the lifetime capacity may be reduced.
