To do this, follow the instructions in the section “Preparing the Espresso Machine for Use”. 5 FEATURES & CONTROLS Measuring Scoop with Tamper Two Cup Filter Water Tank Lid One Cup Filter Coffee Nozzle Water Tank Filter Holder Control Dial Steam Nozzle Steam Nozzle Protector Steam Control Dial Boiler Head Drip Tray and Cover Thermostat Indicator Light OFF Steam Production Power Indicator Light Pre-heating Coffee Extraction (Brew) 6 OPERATION Getting the right espresso for every user’s taste is dependent upon the type of coffee, the amount and the pressing. We recommend you choose your preferred coffee blend, one with a fine grind, especially for espresso. The result will vary considerably according to the quantity of coffee used. If you want a strong coffee you should use the finest grind possible and fill the coffee holder to the maximum. It is recommended to press the coffee down using the tamper, this will improve the crema on top of the espresso. Coffee should always come out of the filter holder in a regular stream without dripping, if this is not the case look at the quantity of coffee or adjust the coffee grind. PREPARING THE ESPRESSO MACHINE FOR USE Filling the water tank 1. Remove the detachable water tank and fill with cold water, taking care not to exceed the “Max” level on the water tank. 2. Replace the water tank back into correct position. Preheating your Espresso Machine To make sure your coffee is dispensed at the optimum temperature it is essential that the coffee unit is preheated before use. 1. Push the filter into filter holder firmly (without coffee). Attach the empty filter holder to the machine by positioning it under the boiler outlet with the handle towards the left of the unit. Turn it to the right to the “lock” position (see Fig. 1). 2. Place a suitable cup under the filter holder, it is a good idea to use the cup in which the coffee will be served, so that the cup may be pre-heated, turn the dial to the pre-heat setting ( ). 3. When the thermostat indicator light (green) comes on, turn the control dial clockwise again to the cup symbol ( ) on the control dial (see Fig. 2). Allow the water to run until the green light goes out and then turn the dial back one click, the pre-heating has now finished. Figure 1 Figure 2 7 How to prepare Espresso coffee. 1. After carrying out the pre-heating of the machine as described above, remove the filter holder by turning it clockwise. Make sure any coffee grounds from the previous infusion are removed. Add ground coffee to the filter using the spoon provided (the filters will hold enough coffee for one or two cups), then press the ground coffee tightly with the tamper, the coffee needs to be tampered to achieve a good crema on top of the coffee. 2. Remove any excess coffee from around the rim of the filter holder; otherwise you will not get a good seal. Attach the filter holder to the machine by positioning it under the boiler outlet with the handle towards the left of the unit and turn the handle towards the centre to the “lock” position (see Fig. 1). 3. Pour out the hot water from the cup (from pre-heating), and place the cup back under the filter holder, making sure the cup or cups line up with the dispensing holes on the filter holder. 4. When the thermostat indictor light is green, turn the control dial clockwise to the cup symbol ( ) on the control dial to initiate the flow of coffee. Once the desired quantity of coffee has been obtained, turn the control dial back to the pre-heat setting ( ). The longer the coffee is allowed to flow the weaker the flavour will be. 5. To remove the filter, turn the holder clockwise, and make sure this is done after the coffee has finished flowing; do not do this while brewing coffee. 6. To remove the used coffee, tap the coffee out of the filter by turning it over. Take care as the filter holder will be very HOT. 7. Turn the control dial to the centre to the (OFF) position if you do not require any frothed milk. How to Steam/Froth Milk This is perfect for making your own Latte and Cappuccinos just like a true Barista! To make the perfect steamed or frothed milk you will need a suitable container to do this in, remembering that the milk will double in size, a small stainless steel jug is the best. Whole or semi-skimmed milk straight from the fridge is recommended. 1. Prepare the espresso coffee first by following the instructions Figure 3 detailed above. 2. Turn the control dial anti-clockwise to the steam position ( ), wait for the thermostat indicator light to illuminate (see Fig. 3). 3. Fill a jug with approximately 100ml of milk per cappuccino/ 150ml for a Latte. 4. Place the jug underneath the steam spout, with the steam spout in the milk, then turn the steam control knob slowly in an anti-clockwise direction. Steam will come out from the spout, giving the milk a creamy frothy appearance. To obtain more froth insert the spout to the bottom of the jug and rotate in a circular motion to just underneath the surface of the milk. You will be able to tell if the milk is at the desired temperature by feeling the outside of the jug. Take care - the jug will get HOT! Do not boil the milk, as this will spoil the flavour. 5. To stop steam production, turn the dial in the opposite direction. 6. The secret is to tap the jug on the counter; this will ensure all the foam is at the top of the jug. Pour the steamed milk into the espresso to make a Latte or both steam milk and froth to make a cappuccino. Finish with a dusting of cocoa power or cinnamon and sweeten to taste. 8 TROUBLESHOOTING Problem Possible Causes Solution Coffee drips from the edges of the filter holder, rather than through the holes. The filter holder has not been inserted correctly. Remove the filter and re-attach the filter again (see Fig. 1) The holes are blocked in the filter holder. Remove the filter and clean the filter holder. There is insufficient water in the water tank. Fill the water tank with fresh cold water, taking care not to exceed the “max”. The holes in the filter are blocked. Rinse the filter under the tap and if necessary clean with a pin. The espresso machine had not undergone the preheating process. Follow the “preheating” instructions. The green indicator ready light was not illuminated. Wait for the green light to come on. The cups were not pre-heated. Place the cups on the warming plate for 10 minutes or rinse the cups under hot water. The pump is very noisy The water tank is empty. Switch off the machine, remove the water tank and refill with fresh cold water. The crema is poor The ground coffee has not be pressed down firmly enough. Use the tamper on the end of the measuring scoop to press down the coffee more firmly. There is insufficient coffee. Make sure you use one scoop of ground coffee per cup of espresso. The ground coffee is not finely ground enough. Only use coffee specially designed for espresso machines, the coffee will be a finer grind. The steam nozzle is blocked. Clean the steam nozzle. Espresso no longer drips out The coffee is cold No steam or reduced steam from the steam spout 9 CARE & CLEANING You must clean the steam nozzle and froth attachment immediately after each use, if you do not this can get blocked. After you finish frothing milk, the best solution is to run a small amount of steam through the nozzle to remove any traces of milk. 1. Remove the steam wand protector and place this under running water to remove any excess milk. 2. Wipe the steam nozzle, removable cup tray and the exterior of the unit with a clean, damp cloth. Do not use any harsh abrasives or metal scourers as this will damage the cosmetic finish of the unit. 3. Remove the filter holder by turning it clockwise and tapping out any coffee grounds rinse the filter and holder under running water. 4. Lift out the removable drip try and wash in warm soapy water. Rinse and thoroughly dry before refitting. DESCALING Lime-scale build-up will reduce the efficiency of your Espresso Machine. Regular cleaning every 6-8 weeks is essential to prevent lime- scale build-up and prevent reducing the Espresso Machine’s working life. More frequent cleaning will be required depending on the quality of water where you live and how often the Espresso Maker is used. If the water is filtering through more slowly than usual this is also a sign that the machine needs to be de-scaled. We recommend you use a specific “household descaler” especially designed for Espresso Machines. 1. Fill the tank with cold water and the descaler to the “Max” line. Figure 4 2. Follow the “preheating instructions” but do not place the filter holder underneath the water boiler, instead place a suitable container to collect the water underneath. 3. Run half the water from the water tank through the machine, by turning the control dial to the coffee extraction indicator (see Fig. 4). When half the water has passed through the machine switch off the button. Turn the control dial to the steam indicator (see Fig. 5) and wait for the green light to appear and rotate the steam control dial a little to allow steam to come out of Figure 5 the frothing nozzle for 1 minute, and then turn the dial off. 4. Turn the dial to the OFF position. Leave the descaling solution to work for about 15 minutes. 5. Re-start the unit and allow the remainder of the water/descaler mixture to flow through the machine following step 3. 6. To elimate any residue left behind from the descaling solution, rinse the water tank well and re-fill with clean cold water and replace. Repeat the “preheating instructions “at least 3 times to ensure there are no residues left. STORAGE Ensure that the Espresso maker has completely cooled down and is clean before storing away. Store in its packing box or in a clean, dry place.
