Pet First Aid Can Save Your Best Friends Life
Hot summer temperatures combined with a variety of
outdoor activities increase the risks to your pet’s health
and could result in an unexpected emergency for your pet.
While no one wants to face an animal emergency,
knowing how to provide first aid to your pet could very well
save your best friend’s life. Taking time out of their busy
schedules to learn life saving techniques for their furry
friends is exactly what a group of Myrtle Beach area
residents did on July 10.
This group of dog and cat owners as well as area pet
professionals participated in the American Red Cross
Pet CPR & First Aid Class hosted by Coastal Canine
Dog Sports in Surfside Beach. Participants learned various ways to be prepared for when the unexpected occurs
and a pet needs emergency care. While not designed to
replace veterinary care, this class instead taught
participants the appropriate measures to take to help
stabilize the pet until emergency veterinary help could be
obtained.
From the basics of what essentials to stock in a
pet first aid kit and how to manage trauma and injury
until veterinary treatment is available, to life saving
rescue breathing with hands-on CPR and ‘mouth to
snout’ resuscitation on life-size pet mannequins, class
participants were exposed to numerous pet first aid
scenarios. First aid techniques for a wide range of
illnesses and injuries were discussed with emphasis
placed on providing first aid for typical summertime canine

emergencies.
Participants completing the class not only received
Certificates of Completion from Coastal Canine Dog
Sports, but became Pet CPR & First Aid Certified by the
American Red Cross. Additional First Aid classes will be
held in the fall at Coastal Canine Dog Sports.

SHELTERS & RESCUE GROUPS
Critter Magazine™ is an animal adoption publication dedicated to
improving the quality of life for animals through education, support of spay/
neuter efforts and encouraging responsible pet ownership, as well as helping
to find loving homes for animals in need. Although the majority of the animals
profiled are dogs and cats, we will feature any animal that is in need
of adoption. We publish each month and distribute throughout Horry and
Georgetown counties. Advertising and editorial deadline is the 15th of the
month for the following month’s issue. We welcome letters to the editor,
comments and suggestions, as well as informative articles and stories which
are relevant to our goals.
Subscriptions are available for $24 per year.
Critter Magazine cannot screen either potential adopters or animals for health or
temperament. We urge all parties to act responsibly in these matters. All animals
adopted through Critter Magazine must be spayed or neutered prior to adoption.
Critter Magazine™ is a publication of Critter Communications, LLC

If you are on the fence about adopting a pet, consider this:
Studies have shown that pet owners, particularly the elderly, have
lower blood pressure, are less likely to be depressed, and have higher
self-esteem than people who don't have companion animals.
Dogs help us get exercise by going for walks … and petting
cats reduces stress … so it’s a no-brainer.
If you’ve been debating about adopting a companion,
you could consider fostering a pet. Check out the rescues
and shelters in Critter for more information on fostering.

TARA’S STORY
Upon returning home from work, Jim,
founder of Animal Guardians of South
Carolina, went to visit the rescued dogs
in his care. He was shocked to find
blood all over the kennels. After a quick
assessment, he found the blood was
coming from Tara, the sweetest Pit Bull
ever! After consulting with the vet and
looking at Tara’s severe injuries Jim
feels that Tara was protecting the other
rescues from a raccoon. She had over
25 bites, mostly on her face and inside her mouth. There
was a hole the size of an egg in her chest. She still
cannot eat, so she is on an IV and pain
medicine. She will probably be at the vet
another week and more surgeries are
necessary. She will recover but it will take
a long time and a lot of patient care. Jim
lovingly says of Tara: “She is not only our
mascot but in our hearts, she is a true
HERO.” The cost of Tara’s medical
treatment so far is over $1,500. If you could
find it your heart to send a few dollars to
help with Tara’s treatment, not only will you
be helping a rescue who does great work in our area, but
you will be showing Tara that people really do care.

What’s new at the Horry County Animal Care Center?
Hope. For the each of 12,000 animals that cross their
doorstep every year, the possibility of a new home looks
very slim. It takes a sincere commitment to adoption to
make that slim possibility a reality. And now the Horry
County Animal Care Center has brought hope across
that doorstep, too. And her name of is Kelly Bonome,
Operations Manager.
Critter Magazine stopped in at the July Petfinder
Birthday Bash, a big adoption event sponsored by the
Animal Care Center. Included were Wild Heir Lab Rescue,
Waccamaw Area Rescue Mission, Sunshine Animal
Haven, Angel Dog Acres Rescue, Robin’s Rescues,
Phoenix Rising Border Collie Rescue, Grateful Goldens,
Two x Two Animal Rescue, and St. Frances Animal
Center. What a wonderful gathering of rescues and
shelters alike. “Rescue groups are our lifeline,” explained
Kelly Bonome.
Kelly is able to help the rescues with low-cost spay/
neuter, as well as other medical issues - and the rescues
help reduce the population at the shelter by providing
foster homes until the pets are adopted. Amazingly, St.
Frances Animal Center has also helped Horry County by
taking up to 100 dogs who might find homes more easily
in the Georgetown area. While we were there, a Blue
Merle was on his way to St. Frances. What a beautiful dog
some lucky adopter will get!
At the event, the rescues were able to keep their cats
cool in the mobile unit provided by the Animal Care
Center. The dogs and visitors enjoyed cool breezes under
a large tent with fans. Everyone worked together with one
purpose in mind - find every animal a home! And that day,
many animals did.
It is often said “it takes a village to raise a child.” Maybe
we need to adopt that philosophy to animal rescue. It
takes many different people working together to keep all of
our animals in good homes. We need to spay and neuter
our pets so there aren’t any surprise additions to the
family. And we need to offer help to those who suddenly
have trouble feeding and caring for their pets - and we
need to help the rescues and shelters who help our strays.
What can you do?
Volunteer at a shelter or rescue to help with
fundraising, help with administrative work, or even
provide the social contact all of our dogs and cats need to
be happy and healthy. For rescues, become a foster
home. When you can get one animal out of a shelter, and
into a home, the chances for a successful adoption to a
permanent home are far greater for that animal; and it
makes room for one more stray at the shelter, one more
slim possibility for a second chance at a good life.
The rescues need foster homes desperately. Please
call or visit one that interests you to see how you can help.

Bowser’s Birthday Cake
From The Simple Little Vegan Dog Book by Michelle A. Rivera
1½ cups unbleached white flour
1½ teaspoons baking powder
1 cup pureed cooked lentils
1 cup unsweetened applesauce
½ cup vegetable oil
Unsweetened apple butter (optional)
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Oil and flour and 8x5x3 inch loaf pan. Sift together flour and
baking powder and set aside. Place the lentils, applesauce and oil in a large bowl. Stir until
smooth and well combined. Gradually add the flour mixture and stir to make a smooth batter.
Pour into the prepared loaf pan. Bake for 1 hour. Cool for 10 minutes before removing the cake
from the pan. If desired frost the cake with apple butter just before serving. Stored in a sealed
container, cake will keep for 5 to 7 days in the refrigerator or 3 months in the freezer.

Hive, Sweet Hive
Just as people need safe, comfortable
homes, so do wild animals. Each kind of
wild animal makes its own home. Homes are
important to animals. They are places where
animals live, rest and raise their babies.
When you see an animal’s home, look - but
don’t touch! Can you match each home
below with the animal who lives there? Draw
a line from each picture on the left to a
picture on the right.
The animals on this page are wild animals. Pets are not wild animals. Pets need to live
with people who take care of them. On another sheet of paper, draw a pet at home.
