S ummer is upon us, and we are ready to relax and enjoy our Club. With the increase in utilization for all areas of Carmel, we’d like to share these reminders about the importance of showing courtesy to your fellow Club members. Mark Anderson President Currently, our Golf Committee is developing an awareness program called “Care for Carmel”, asking every golfer to take responsibility for proper care of the courses as they play. Other committees and board members are also hearing about issues relating to courtesy at Carmel. A caring and courteous respect for our facilities and for other members’ enjoyment needs to be an inherent part of the Carmel experience. What actions can you take to show you are part of the “Carmel Cares” community? Here are a few areas of note: Golf: Pace of Play – Players must maintain pace with the group in front of them. If your group falls behind, you must allow the group behind to play through. This is the rule. Golf Course Care – All members are expected to the leave the course in better condition than they found it. As necessary, this includes raking bunkers, filling divots and replacing ball marks. Please always take the time to fix your own, and one other. Practice – Rather than hitting multiple shots from the same spot on the golf course, members should make use of the range for all practice. Dress Code - Proper golf attire is mandatory for members and guests on the golf courses and all practice areas. Tank tops, halter tops, tee shirts and cut-offs are not permitted. Shorts are permitted providing they are no higher than four inches above the knee. Short shorts, gym shorts, tennis shorts, swim attire, blue jean cut-offs, and denim attire are not permitted in golf areas. Golf shirts must be tucked in. Golf caps must be worn with the brim facing directly forward. Golf shoes with soft spikes or turf friendly shoes must be worn in golf areas. Pool: Towels - Members are responsible for the return of all towels issued to them, their children and guardians and their guests. Towels are to be returned to the appropriate bins. Seating - A key area for member satisfaction involves seating at the pool. Members may reserve chairs for their children, and guests, but only while they are present in the Pool Complex. Saving chairs for future arrivals is not permitted. Trash - All trash should be disposed of in the trash cans and not left on the tables or poolside. Child Supervision - All children under the age of 11 must be supervised by a guardian aged 14 or older at all times while at the pool. Page 2 Carmeline Clubhouse: Dress Code – The following are not permitted in the Clubhouse: torn, tight, short and baggy clothing; bathing suits; t-shirts; bare mid-sections; and untucked shirts (Tommy Bahama Style Box Cut Shirts are permitted). Child Supervision - Parents must supervise their children (under the age of 13) on the Honors Terrace. The West Patio is for ADULTS ONLY. Children are not permitted to run on the golf course at any time. Children are NOT PERMITTED past the cart path unless they are playing golf. While dining in the Grill or on the patio, please watch your children, monitor their noise level (no screaming/shouting), and take necessary steps to ensure they are not causing a disruption to other members. We should remember that while we are a family oriented club, we should also respect the rights of other members to have a peaceful and relaxing place to enjoy, and not ask them to contend with loud or disruptive behavior from adults or children other than in appropriate areas such as the pool. Tennis: Reservation of courts - Please remember to reserve a court prior to coming out to play. Proper Attire - Appropriate tennis attire and shoes are required at all times (unacceptable clothing/shoes include: tank tops or sleeveless shirts worn by men; cut-offs; swim wear; jeans; running shoes; street shoes; deck type shoes; and sandals or bare feet.) Finally, please remember that all guests must be registered before utilizing Club facilities. In conclusion, we don’t want to ask staff to police our behavior. Instead, let’s take it upon ourselves as members to be part of a caring community at Carmel by respecting each other’s enjoyment of our Club. I also encourage you to discuss this with fellow members, and encourage everyone in the Carmel family to respect one another. Thank you in advance for your attention to these rules and your support of Carmel Country Club. n o s r e d n A k r a M Dear Carmel Members: It’s great to be on board as the new Clubhouse Manager here at Carmel. I have joined the Carmel team after serving as Food & Beverage Director at Memphis Country Club for the last 6 years, but I also bring 14 years of private club experience to Carmel. I believe my experience has provided me with excellent grounding to advance, promote and carry on Carmel’s tradition of excellence. The ongoing pursuit of elevating service and amenities has me focusing on some areas important to every member. Improving service in the Grill is a top priority for me. My focus includes bringing in a new Grill Manager, establishing a specific set of service standards for all wait staff, and making overall refinements to organization in the Grill and around all of our Food and Beverage services. Another area of focus for me will be staff training. We have already begun assessing, redesigning, and developing new training material and will begin implementing a very aggressive approach to retraining current and new staff over the coming months. Also, those who dine with us in the Grill will begin to receive a short five question survey via email the following day. It is my hope that, through your feedback, we will be able to identify exactly what areas we need to advance and improve as well as recognize what we already do successfully. Another immediate priority is to increase the effectiveness around our banquet planning process. We’re working with a nationally recognized catering consultant to assess and define opportunities to elevate our offerings in this area, and also help apply these improved processes and innovations at Carmel. This includes developing new banquet menus catered to specific groups, along with reviewing all policies and procedures in our banquet and event offerings. Ultimately, my goals and priorities as Clubhouse Manager have the best interests of you the member at heart. Please remember that one of the most effective ways to improve your member experience is by providing us with your input and opinions about Carmel. Filling out the comment cards available on the Club’s website is the easiest and most direct way to do just that. Those comments are shared with all relevant management and leadership and help us continue in our Club-wide pursuit of excellence in all areas. Thank you to everyone I have met thus far for their very warm welcome. I look forward to meeting and getting to know more of the membership over the coming weeks and months. What an incredible group of bright, energetic and talented girls that are eager to learn! Their enthusiasm was the highlight of my entire week and I can't wait to see where the girls golf program goes from here!" ~ Perry Swenson Livonius First of all, I want to thank Perry for her time and efforts in hosting this clinic. She was a gracious host and very generous with the girls too: she posed for professional portraits with them, gave them her personally signed player cards, tossed autographed golf balls out to the young ladies that asked questions; it was really fantastic. I know the girls were very impressed with not only her playing ability, but her kindness as well. I figured that we would have a good group together for Perry's class; but 50 girls!?! For me it was an encouraging sight. I am sure now that Carmel has a significant group of young ladies that will take an active role in a girls only golf program if it is available to them. I am excited to set up more events where the girls have the chance to enjoy golf and each other's company. Page 7 Carmeline Carmel Invitational Summer Member Guest July 20th- 22nd The tournament begins with a practice round on Friday afternoon, and the tournament days are Saturday and Sunday, with 9:00 Shotgun starts both days. On Saturday the format is Texas Scramble on the North Course and on Sunday the format is Best Ball (Both Gross and Net) on the South Course. Call the Golf Shop to see if spaces are still available in the event. The cost is $425 per team. Fee includes three days of lunch, two days of breakfast, cart fees, guest fees, beverages on cart each day and prizes. Parent Child Championship Sunday, August 5th Don’t miss out on one of the best events of the year! This event is open to all members and their fathers, mothers, sons and daughters. Grandparents may play with grandchildren as long as the grandparent is a member. The format will be Modified Alternate Shot played on the North Course. Each participant hits their drive, and then the players switch and hit each others second shot. The best ball is then selected and the participants will alternate until the ball is holed. You may play with multiple children at the same time and request a tee time range but please note that all age groups that play 18 holes must tee off prior to 2:00. The cost for the 6-8 and 9-10 age groups is $35, and the cost for the 11-12, 13-14, 15-17 and 18+ age groups is $60. Any member with more than one team pays ½ the entry fee for additional teams. The cost includes prizes, cookout (Noon to 4pm) and refreshments. One Day Member Guest (North Course) Thursday, August 9th This event will be a 1:00 Shotgun on the North Course. Teams will consist of a member and one (1) guest playing Best Ball (Both Gross and Net Divisions). The entry fee of $165 includes lunch (before golf in the men's grill), guest fee, cart fee, prizes and post round cocktails and hors d' oeuvres. The field is limited to the first 44 teams that sign up. Don’t delay and sign up today for this fun event! August 24th, 25th and 26th concludes Championship Month at Carmel Country Club. Members and spouses practice up as the Men’s Club Championship, Women’s Club Championship and the President’s Cup are contested on this very busy and exciting weekend. Men's Club Championship The Men's Club Championship will take place August 24, 25 and 26 and will be a 36 hole stroke play tournament which begins on Friday afternoon. After the completion of play on Saturday, the low 4 participants will play the match play semi finals and finals on Sunday. The other participants will play 18 more holes of stroke play on Sunday. There will be no handicaps taken into consideration, and the course and tees will be set up in true championship conditions. The low 4 players in the Men’s Club Championship will receive an exemption onto the Carmel Country Club InterClub Team. The course rotation for this event will be South/ North/ South. Women's Club Championship The Women’s Club Championship will take place August 25 and 26 and will be played on Saturday and Sunday, with tee times beginning at 8:00 AM. The rotation will South Course/ North Course, and will be a 36 hole stoke play event. The field will be split into flights based on handicap index, and prizes in each flight will be paid out to low gross scores and low net scores. President's Cup The President’s Cup makes it’s return to golf schedule this year, and will be played on Saturday, August 25 and Sunday, August 26 only. This will be a 36 hole stroke play event. The field will be put into flights based on handicap index, and the course rotation for the event is North/ South. Within each flight, the majority of payouts will be for net scores, however there will be some gross payouts in each flight. The cost for each of these events is $60, and the deadline for registration is August 17th. Member/ Spouse Championship Sunday, August 12th This championship will be contested on the North Course with a 2:00 Shotgun. Please note that this tournament is for husband and wife teams only. This includes members, spouses and guests. Page 8 Carmeline 53rd Annual Carmel Fall Classic October 18, 19 and 20, 2012 The field size for this year's event will be capped at 96 teams, and the cost will be $900. The sign up procedure for the Fall Classic will be as follows: Entries will be taken starting at 7:30 AM on Saturday, July 14th and ending on Sunday, July 22nd at 7:00 PM. You will have these eight days to return your completed entry form to the Golf Shop with your guests name and check made out to Carmel Country Club for $900. All entry forms must be filled out in their entirety. On Monday, July 23rd, if we over-subscribe the tournament, names will be drawn out of the completed forms to form a waiting list. Please remember that all guests must have an official USGA Handicap Index. Please note that no entries may be faxed in, and refunds will only be given if your spot can be filled by a team on the waiting list. Entry forms must be dropped off at the Golf Shop. Junior Inter-Club The Junior Inter-Club Team has once again completed its seeding for the top 16 spots to represent Carmel in the league matches. For those of you who don't know about the junior inter-club team, here is the scoop. Carmel's juniors are apart of a Junior Golf League comprised of 16 teams from various private clubs in the Greater Charlotte Area that this year is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Their are four age divisions: 10 & Under, 11-12, 13-14, 15-18, and four juniors represent their club within each age division. At Carmel this team has become so popular that we hold an extensive qualifying process involving seven different 9-hole rounds for the kids to come out and try their hand at qualifying. This year the number of juniors has exploded - 60 juniors tried out for the coveted 16 spots on the Team! The biggest increase has come from the 7-10 year olds, with a total of 25 kids in that group alone! Carmel has won the League Championship the last two years and is hoping to make it three years in a row this Summer! From Coach Adam Ohsberg, PGA - "For me it is a real privilage to Coach such an outstanding group of Juniors. I am always so impressed by their focus, and competitiveness within even the youngest age groups. Beyond the competition though, it is especially rewarding to see the juniors bonding with each other through golf. I love to see them remove their hats and shake hands on the 9th green after their matches. This year I am creating highlight videos for the group with player interviews immediately after their rounds; anything I can do to help the kids feel like big-leaguers! I feel confident about our chances in League this year. We would love to bring the Inter-Club Trophy home to Carmel for a third consecutive year!!!" All abilities are encouraged to come out and enjoy some court time. We will cover a basic understanding of all strokes, general rules and some strategy. The cost for this clinic is $15.00 and make sure you check the Carmel website for dates and times. Cardio Tennis Looking for a great workout? This fast-paced, hour long session is designed for all levels of play and focuses on conditioning rather than stroke development. Different drills are used to increase your heart rate while being out on the court. No matter what your playing level is, male or female…everyone is welcome! The cost for this clinic is $12.00 and make sure you check the Carmel website for dates and times. Upcoming Events Men’s Member/Guest Guys grab a guest and come join us for the Carmel Men’s Member/Guest Tournament on Saturday, August 4th . We will play a round robin format using the average of you and your guests USTA rating to flight the teams. The cost for this event is $60.00 which includes a gift for the member and guest and lunch for both after tennis is completed. Play will start on Saturday promptly at 9:00am and wrap up around noon. You will have the option to play golf on Friday with your guest for an additional $80 which includes the guest fee and cart fee for the member and guest. Please reserve your space on the Carmel website. Men’s Night Every Wednesday night all men regardless of skill level are welcome to play and enjoy some fellowship. There will be a clinic from 6:30-8:00pm followed by an hour of flighted doubles play. The cost for this event is $20.00 and the sign up will be weekly on the Carmel Country Club website. Ladies Night Every Monday night during the summer months until August 6th, all women regardless of skill level are welcome to come play and enjoy some fun and fellowship. A member of the tennis staff will run a doubles round robin starting at 6:30-8:30pm. Mixed Doubles Mixer Join your Carmel friends Friday, July 13th and August 10th on the courts for a night of relaxed mixed doubles play. It will be pro-supervised and all levels of play are encouraged to participate. Play begins @ 6:00pm and will wrap up around 8:00pm. You can play with or without your better half, so no matter your level or your spouses come out and have a good time. In order to participate you must sign up online. Tennis Page 12 Carmeline Summer Tennis Camps (Ages 7 & Up) Monday-Friday Session Dates: July 2-6, July 16-20, July 30- Aug 3 Time: 9:00- 12 NOON Cost: $180 Student-to-instructor ratio 8:1; Limited to 24 per session; 8 spots per age division (7-8) (9-10) (11-12) (7-8) year olds This group will be using the red quick start ball on the 36’ court and they must have a 23” racquet. (9-10) year olds The orange quick start ball is used in this group and the kids will be on the 60’ court with a 25” racquet. (11-12) year olds We will be using a regular size tennis court and the green dot tennis balls with this group of players. They can hit with either a 25” or 27” racquet. This summer camp is designed to strengthen all aspects of the tennis game for players of all ability. Each day will include footwork, agility, stroke development, general rules and sportsmanship. The pros will focus on a different skill Monday through Thursday and all of the drills and play will be centered on that particular stroke. Daily, there will be round robin play, both singles and doubles, encouraging students to play points and matches preparing them for eventual team tennis at Carmel Country Club. Throughout the week, each child will have the opportunity to have his or her strokes filmed and analyzed. Every day will consist of footwork, live ball drills, singles and doubles strategy and a lot of match play. Spend the week sharpening your skills and building your confidence as you enter the fall tennis season. Junior Clinics For The Fall MINI STARS (ages 3 and 4) Mondays and Wednesdays 2:15-2:45 August 27-October 24 $8.00 per clinic Our goal with this introductory clinic is to make the court a fun place to be! We will focus on tossing and catching drills, hand/ eye coordination and moving our feet. We will practice listening to our coaches and introduce the idea of score keeping by catching the red foam balls. The juniors in this clinic will need a 19” racquet in order to participate. BRIGHT STARS (ages 5 and 6) Mondays and Wednesdays 4:00-4:30 August 27-October 24 $8.00 per clinic In this clinic the juniors will start to develop basic forehands, backhands, volleys and serves while using the correct grips. They will continue to work on movement, balance, agility and hand eye coordination while beginning to understand about the flight of the ball. The learning in this session is made easier and more fun by continuing to use a variety of games while ensuring each child’s success. The children will be using a red foam ball and will be on a 36’ court and must have a 21” racquet to participate. FUTURE STARS (ages 7-8) Mondays and Wednesdays 4:30-5:15 August 27-October 24 $10.00 per clinic Juniors in this clinic will be continuing to develop their forehands, backhands, volleys and serves and learning to execute simple tactics. The development at this level allows for an “all-court” game style with net play, but with a ¾ size court. Full tennis rules begin to apply with no-ad games and shorter sets. This group will be using the red quick start ball on the 36’ court and they must have a 23” racquet in order to participate. SHOOTING STARS (ages 9-10) Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:00-5:00 August 28-October 25 $12.00 per clinic In theses sessions, we are learning athletic skills required in tennis combined with learning how to think quickly, listen and work in a group. This level moves up to the orange ball and the 60’ size court and would use a 25” racquet in order to participate. SUPER STARS (ages 11 and up) Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:00-6:30 August 28-October 25 $17.00 per clinic After “graduating” from the progressive tennis, the children in this clinic will be fully developed to successfully use regular balls and play on full size courts. Focus is primarily on tactical aspects of the game mixed with technical development. Footwork, agility and strength development will also be incorporated. Page 13 Carmeline 9 Holers Golf Is Hot Hot Hot For Nine Holers Carmel Nine Holers hosted the "Carmel Caliente" Invitational on July 18th. Providence CC, Ballantyne, Raintree, Cedarwood and Sun City Nine Hole Golf Associations were invited to participate in formatted tournament on the South Course. Golf was preceded by a continental breakfast on the patio and followed by a Mexican Fiesta on the Terrace. Each participant received their own Carmel Caliente Hot Sauce in their Welcome Packet! Mulligans and Sand Tosses were available for purchase with the proceeds donated to The Doves Nest in Charlotte. It was a great day of "hot golf "! Look for the sign up sheet on the locker room bulletin board this summer and join us! 18 Holers T he 18-hole ladies annual two-day Ryder Cup tournament got off to a soggy start. Monday’s competition was called due to severe rainfall. Tuesday’s event was played on the South course and the Red team captained by Joyce Shields prevailed over Julie Cowman’s Blue team. A buffet lunch was served on the honors terrace. The grand finale was a spontaneous water gun fight, which cooled everybody off ! Julie Cowman and Joyce Shields The ladies traveled to the Pinehurst area again this year for the annual road trip. The 15 women had lots of fun and it included 3 days of golf competition. Patty Moore hosted the ladies for supper one night at her Pinehurst home. The second Leslie Estelle, Patty Moore and night the ladies ate at Laura Quillin in Pinehurst a lovely restaurant in the historic Pinehurst village. All the ladies received party favors—personalized flasks for our infamous “birdie juice”!! The weather was wonderful and people are looking forward to next year! A big thanks to Barb Nash and Lauren Helbein for planning the trip. The North Carolina Women’s Net Play Day was won by Joan Eliason this year. Joan has won this event before and we offer her our hearty congratulations. He was born and raised in Minnesota and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in 2011 with a Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management. He has completed management internships at Beach Point Club in Westchester, NY, the Bohemian Club in San Francisco, CA, the 2011 Masters Tournament, and with the Club Managers Association of America. Dave Jenkins has been employed with Carmel since November of 2003. During that time, Dave has worked various positions throughout the kitchen. He also worked in the turn rooms for over a year. In his current role as pool grill manager, he is responsible for the daily operations in the kitchen and ensuring quality of food for the members and families at Carmel while at the pool.
