Carmel Cares Initiative Carmel Cares A clubwide and member-driven program to promote and encourage respect for every area of Carmel Carmel Cares is a clubwide member-driven program designed to educate, inform and encourage respect for our Club and shared Member experiences. This program has been created to raise awareness and change our culture so that each member cares for the condition of our facilities by showing courtesy and consideration for the experiences of fellow members. Why are we doing this? We have invested millions of dollars in upgrading our golf, pool, fitness, and tennis facilities. The pursuit of excellence is a tradition and mainstay of Carmel and one of the major reasons why so many families choose to be a part of our Carmel community. Unfortunately, not everyone properly cares for our facilities. Ball marks are not repaired, bunkers are not raked, trash is left behind on tennis courts and pool chairs. Carmel’s professional staff is held accountable for properly preparing the facilities we all enjoy. It is up to us as members to hold each other accountable for the care of those facilities while we use them, so that those who come behind us are able to enjoy excellent conditions as well. In the coming weeks the “Carmel Cares” program will begin to share with you tips on how we can care for our facilities and make the experience even better for everyone. Participation from all members in this program will further strengthen the quality and pleasure we all take in our club. ~ The Carmel Board of Directors Social Events TACO & TEQUILA TUESDAYS - HONORS TERRACE June 4, 11, 18 and 25 6-9pm Honors Terrace Cocktails by Member Signature Don’t worry about dinner on Tuesday nights in June; join us for a specialty Taco Bar and Tequila sampling and drinks, including Cordials and Margaritas! Schedule Details: Mondays forehands and backhands Tuesdays volleys and overheads Wednesdays serves Thursdays transition game Fridays fun games Tennis TENNIS FACILITY UPDATE: CLAY COURT CONDITION REPORT Moving into our second summer season playing on the new Har-Tru HydroCourts, we’re pleased to report that the courts are playing and looking good, according to both membership and outside analysis provided by Har-Tru. If you haven’t played tennis at Carmel lately, what are you waiting for? The conditions are ideal and the weather is cooperating! Tracy Lynch of Har-Tru visited Carmel in early May, evaluating court conditions, reviewing maintenance practices, and offering his advice and analysis for moving forward. His report was excellent and our courts are performing very well. Lynch met with Tennis Staff and Board Member Steve Carley, and the bottom line was to “keep doing what you are doing” to the courts. Overall, the courts will take another couple years to fully cure, typical for any new clay courts. Because the Har-Tru Hydro Courts have increased capacity for retaining moisture, playability is increased over other types of clay courts, and maintenance needs to be adjusted accordingly. Increased moisture eliminates the need for nighttime and midday watering cycles, thanks to the consistent saturation levels. The HydroCourt requires more scarification and less rolling than conventional clay courts, and routines must be adjusted as weather demands. When the courts start to get hard and slick late in the summer months, it’s time to increase the scarification routine. It is also recommended that we incorporate the use of coarse blend in the summer months to help prevent slickness on the courts. The daily maintenance schedule includes continuing use of the Court Rake early in the morning and steel drag broom at mid-day, with adjustments as the court surface dictates. (The more play, the more need for using the Gator Rake for both morning and mid-day maintenance.) Seasonally, the increased moisture of the HydroCourts does present increased chances of freeze/thaw cycles that make courts unplayable. The best practice for trying to keep them from freezing is to pull the drain plugs and let the courts drain as much water as possible out of the cells when freezing temperatures are in the forecast. This doesn’t guarantee the courts won’t More information here... freeze, but could aid in the severity of the freeze thaw cycle. Annually, the Har-Tru consultant recommended that we start to have the courts top-dressed as a means to replace the material that is removed from the court through natural playing conditions. This process also allows for the high play areas (baselines/service lines) to be patched, thus eliminating any low areas forming in the court surfaces. The current plans are to assess conditions in the fall and top-dress low areas at that time. Topping is also added throughout the year as needed, and the courts are closely monitored. Overall, as Board Member Steve Carley reported, Carmel is “on the right track” with care and maintenance of our new clay courts. Tennis Director Katie Carpenter and her team are very pleased with how the new courts are playing and how the team at Carmel is working to maintain them. So if you haven’t been by the Tennis Facility lately, please stop by. There’s plenty of room for spectators to enjoy both the tennis and the gorgeous landscaping superbly maintained by our own Bill Whitman of the Carmel Greens & Grounds Department. With plenty of clinics and play dates for players of all levels, not to mention plenty of great spots to watch the action, we hope all Carmel members will find time to enjoy our excellent Tennis Facility. If you have any questions about the courts, or any aspect of the Carmel tennis program, please contact the Tennis Shop or fill out a Comment Card on the website. POOL UPDATE FROM BRIAN NELSON - POOL MANAGER With the pool season starting off as one of the busiest and most successful yet, we would like to talk about some of the great things to find at Carmel. First we have Maddie Keane. She is a third year Hospitality Major at USC and is in her third year at Carmel. This year she has taken on the main roll of Cocktail Service at the upper and lower pools! Look for her on Weekends! Brian Nelson One of our main focus’ this year has been the overall cleanliness of the Carmel pool. With dedicated staff to clean and restock bathrooms every hour, and pick up towels that didn’t quite make it to a towel bin, you can expect a more refined but still very relaxing atmosphere. The new grill menu has been met with rave reviews! While still working out of confines of the small kitchen we have put together a great menu! Top sellers of course are the Chicken Fingers and French Fries. Not far behind is the New Southwestern Chicken Sandwich and Classic Caesar Salad. Katie Rango is here for her 4th year as the Activities Manager and has put together an action packed season. Look forward to seeing everyone this summer! - Brian Nelson
