ilton Head Island offers world-class golf, vibrant arts and culture, 12 miles of pristine beaches and
refreshing outdoor recreation in an ecologically sensitive setting.
How do we market our destination to attract visitors? Earlier this year the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce
hosted Operation Engagement, an annual process in which the chamber seeks input from the collective tourism community. Overall,
the chamber met with over 90 leaders in the business, tourism and real estate community to help develop the marketing plan for our
destination.
This community input along with consumer-based research shaped the plan which was developed across all platforms, including
print, digital, social, and broadcast media. This combined approach reflects the changing economic, cultural and consumer
behavioral trends impacting the travel and tourism industry and both the global and local business community.
Media Marketing PrograM
The tourism community helped shape the 2011-2012 media campaign, targeting
the affluent traveler and how we as a community define this leisure market.
The campaign includes national and regional media with an emphasis on
Philadelphia, Atlanta and DC.
Destination marketing will focus on third quarter 2011 and first quarter 2012
campaigns designed to drive shoulder season travel.
goals & strategic direction
• Actively and collaboratively engage our partners in working with us to define
changes needed in the local tourism marketplace and advocate for change
implementation and management.
• Foster cross industry networking, cooperation, cross-marketing, packaging and
sales, and opportunities for innovation in pursuing new market segments.
• Research to understand the changing consumer and the most powerful value
proposition we offer to meet their needs.
• Advocate for new and innovative product re-development and packaging on
Hilton Head Island.
• Advance marketing promotions that target high value visitors with compelling,
brand consistent messages.
• Empower our partners to network with each other to cross market the
destination on their own, particularly in ways that support the overall
destination brand.
• Pursue seasonal growth in group & leisure markets.
• Lead the local travel and tourism industry and advocate for its success
through educational forums, workshops, research investment, convenient
digital information access, online dashboard metrics and ROI reporting
systems, enhanced local communications program and advocacy that gives a
cohesive voice to common concerns.

The chamber’s destination travel planning is designed
to meet the needs and expectations of today’s tourism
marketplace, including leisure travel, specialty interest
segments and groups and meetings.
Whether you’re building a new business or
retrofitting an existing space, clean burning
natural gas is your environmentally-friendly energy
choice. Natural gas appliances not only make every
day life better, they’re cost-effective to operate,
generally last longer and require less maintenance.
In addition to the environmental benefits of lower
emissions, plus higher energy efficiency, more than
80 percent of the natural gas used in the U.S. is
domestically produced.
Operating your business with natural gas can help
reduce your impact on the environment without
sacrificing comfort and convenience. If you want to
make your business a little greener, while enjoying
cost benefits, ask for natural gas. To learn more,

ilton Head Island
residents and the national
audience of Food Network
Star all agree that local chef
Orchid Paulmeier is one “hot
mama.” She’s been a Food Network Star
fan-favorite from the very beginning.
It may be hot in the kitchen, but she’s
cool as a cucumber, smoothly stirring up
some classic spice and wowing judges
with her megawatt charm and signature
warmth.
Her chocolate chip pecan pie with
graham cracker bacon crust won raves
from Food Network “Dinner Impossible”
host and Hilton Head Island resident
Robert Irvine. The week three judge
marveled at her creation and her persona, “She never stopped
smiling and having fun the whole time through!”
Owning a restaurant was always part of Paulmeier’s
American dream.
Intent on learning more about the restaurant business,
Paulmeier accepted an internship on Hilton Head Island in
1994 and settled in the Lowcountry and began digging into
the deep, colorful cooking traditions of this region.
In 2003, Paulmeier opened One Hot Mama’s, handpicking
the menu and mixing up all the signature sauces herself.
“I blended Southern favorites like collards, cornbread and
slow-cooked barbecue, with my own family recipes,” she said,
describing the cuisine as “comfort food with a kick.”
And now she is becoming familiar to millions of people
throughout the country. With husband Mike and their three children
cheering her on, she auditioned and won a slot on Food Network
Star, Season 7. The series takes 15 chefs and puts them in what has
become a familiar reality TV showdown. Contestants are eliminated
weekly, with the winner getting his or her own Food Network show.
The program’s been a great platform for Paulmeier’s dynamic
culinary style and offers even greater national exposure for the
burgeoning culinary scene on Hilton Head Island and throughout the
Lowcountry.
At press time, Paulmeier’s star quality was shining brightly. Her
culinary creations have been praised by the judges and she has
consistently been one of the leaders in the fan vote. Follow her
progress and vote at foodnetwork.com/the-next-food-network-star and
on the chamber food blog at hiltonheadisland.org.

ONLINE SURVEYS INCREASE CUSTOMER LOYALTY
Surveys are a great way to show customers you value
them. They also provide valuable insights on running
your business better. Online surveys have an advantage
because they are often quick and easy to complete.
The best strategy is to keep your survey focused on a
single objective and limit the number of questions.
Share results with your customers by sending them
a summary e-mail or by posting the results on your
website. This helps close the loop and shows your
customers that you truly value their feedback.

SUCCESSFUL BRANDS CONNECT WITH
AUTHENTICITY
Authenticity is the key to attracting and retaining
customers, according to attendees at the June New York
Times Small Business Summit. Customers’ craving for
authenticity also has changed the way companies are
establishing themselves.
Successful businesses have team members who
truly exude the brand message. By sharing worthwhile
information with customers, it becomes less like
marketing and establishes more of a connection.
“Today, people create the story along with the product
and it’s more authentic,” said Naked Pizza co-founder
and chief brand architect Robbie Vitrano – “the
storytelling is baked into the whole package.”
