Mother Lillie Marie Lewis (McCoy) was born
March 4, 1924, to Charlie and Gertrude Lewis
in Brooklyn, (Lovejoy) Illinois. She was the
youngest child born to this union with six
brothers; Jefferson, Wilbert, Willie, Albert,
Johnny and Eddie; and two sisters; Edrena
and Ora D.; all of whom preceded her in
death. Three of her children also preceded
her in death; Lawrence, Adele, and Yvonne.
When Mother McCoy was three years old the family moved to
Saint Louis, Missouri, where she lived with her aunt, Mother Lillie
Beatrice James. She received her education at L'Ouverture
Elementary and Middle School and then Vashon High School.
Mother McCoy did very well in Art and Sewing.
While visiting some friends, Isom and
Mollie McCoy, in Lovejoy where she
was singing and playing the piano in
their home. Their nephew, Alphonse,
heard Mother McCoy singing and
playing the piano and the rest is
history. They wed in Holy Matrimony
in a ceremony performed by Reverend
Roy Harris on February 27, 1942. To
this union fifteen children were born.
Mother McCoy loved and cared for her
husband and family unceasingly. She
led her children in daily prayer before
they would leave home. Though she
worked as a household technician, most
notably for Lennie and Geraldine Gipson, who treated her like a
cherished family member for many years, she never retired from
being a mother. She called everyone “baby” and her husband she
lovingly called “Daddy” or “Mac”. They remained faithfully
married until Deacon McCoy departed this life on April 6, 2013.
Mother McCoy was a very sweet and kind woman who did not
meet a stranger, and she felt that everything that God had made
was beautiful. She would tell everyone she met that they were
beautiful no matter how they looked. She was a woman given to
hospitality and full of love for so many. Her love and generosity
did not stop at home, but it went far beyond. She provided a
home for displaced youth, lovingly caring for them until she could
reunite them with their parents.

Mother McCoy accepted Christ at the early age of ten years old. She
was saved during a month long revival run by Pastor and Evangelist
Goldie Haynes at Lovejoy Temple. She became a member of
Paradise Temple COGIC under the leadership of Pastor Willie B.
Nunley, and later Windsor Temple and Memorial Church of God in
Christ under the pastor, Bishop Willie E. Turner. She later united
with Pastor Robert C. Williams and Mother Catherine Williams. She
served with them at National COGIC, National Memorial COGIC,
and National Memorial St. Louis Holy Temple COGIC. She was the
church pianist and rendered her services for 57 years, until her health
failed her and she was unable to play. She was full of the Holy Spirit.
As a member of National Church of God in Christ she started a
summer program at her church where she fed the neighborhood
children with the money from her own pocket. Somehow the word
got out to the Government Agency and they began to supply the
church with the breakfast and lunch for the children in the
neighborhood. She has given away shoes, clothes and food to anyone
in need. Mother McCoy would come into the church shouting and
praising God. Psalm 100 says “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving,
and into his courts with praise.” Upon the demise of Pastor Williams
in January 2013, she united with Pastor Belafae Johnson and the One
Way Christian Fellowship Church. Though she had been wheelchair
bound for many years, her children faithfully took her to church.
Mother Lillie McCoy’s favorite song was, “Through It All”. Her
favorite Old Testament scripture was 23 Psalms, “The Lord is my
shepherd I shall not want”, and her favorite New Testament
scripture was Revelations 21, “And I saw a new heaven, and a new
earth…”
On Tuesday, July 15, 2014, Mother Lillie M. McCoy departed this lifegoing home. She leaves to cherish her memory twelve children;
