Jubilee Year of Mercy
Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Mary, whom Catholic tradition names “Mother of Mercy,” at Cana intercedes with her Son to show
mercy toward the bridal couple: “Son, they have no wine.” But he does more! Jesus’ transformation of water
into wine is a “sign” (John’s term for “miracle”) that God’s marriage with the whole human race has begun in
Jesus’ person and ministry, a marriage that will be consummated on the cross: “It is finished”—we are saved!
But before Jesus acts, Mary instructs the servers to prepare the way for Jesus’ miracle of mercy: “Do
whatever he tells you.” During this Jubilee Y ear of Mercy, Mother Church, like Mother Mary, instructs us to
share the Spirit’s manifold gifts—some of which Paul lists in today’s second reading—in generous service to
the human family. Thus we prepare the way for Jesus’ new miracles of mercy, transforming life’s sometimes
stagnant water into the refreshing wine of God’s mercy.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Although our tradition carries a long memory of marriage as a sacrament, it may surprise you to learn that for nearly eleven
centuries, there was no single wedding ceremony approved for use in the Church. While we have evidence of priests blessing marriages
as early as the second century, in the early period church leaders relied on civil authorities to manage marriage for everyone in society.
In most cases, society yielded its authority to sanction marriage to the male heads of households.
From ancient times, marriage had been a family affair, managed by the father of the family, who acted as priest and guardian of
family tradition. Each head wanted to keep the family gods alive, and so he would arrange for brides for his sons, paying a “bride price”
as compensation for the loss of a skilled household worker. As creepy as that sounds, it was a step up from the kidnapping practice of
earlier years. Even after the kidnapping raids stopped, the customs remained. Every wedding contained the ritualized kidnapping of the
bride, the husband abducting his bride from the festivities, carrying her over the threshold to prevent her father’s gods from following
her into her new religion. There, he fed her a piece of “sacred cake,” initiating her into a new way of life. It’s fascinating to see how
customs endure, long after we have completely rejected the values and attitudes they originally expressed!

Children preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation are reminded to practice the Act of Contrition each day and to
review the process of the Sacrament. Parents are encouraged to assist and support us in this important preparation for the
celebration of 1st Reconciliation in February.
1st Reconciliation : Monday February 1, 2016, 6 :30 p.m. in the Chapel
for children in Mrs. May’s class and all Sunday Religious Education 2nd Graders
Tuesday February 2, 2016 , 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel
for children in Mrs. Murphy’s class and all Wednesday Religious Education 2nd Graders.
We look forward to celebrating with all of you! Let us keep these children, their Catechists, Teachers, and Parents in
special prayer.
Did your child enjoy our Vacation Bible School experience of last June?
Would you like to see this important program offered again this summer?
If you answered yes to both of those questions then we need your assistance and support. Join us on Wednesday Jan. 20
in the Marian Room for a VBS Planning/Brainstorming session. We need some adults willing/able to join us in
producing this important experience. High school students are invited to join us as well.
See you Wednesday, January 20 at 6:30 p.m.
The celebration of a sacrament is always one that involves our whole Church Family. In order to support our 8th Grade
RE and ICGS we ask members of our I. C. Parish family to pray for our Confirmation Candidates from both our
Religious Education and Grade School. You will find prayer cards with a candidate’s name in a basket in the Narthex
on the weekends of January 30 & 31 and Feb. 6 and 7. Please take one and pray to the Holy Spirit as our Candidates
prepare to receive the sacrament on April 16, 2016. If you choose to send a card or note to the student, please send it to
the Rectory and put “Attention RE Office” and the student’s name and we will forward it to the student. It will mean a
great deal to our Candidates to know you are praying for them.

Although our 2015 annual appeal is winding down, we
are still short of our projected goal. If you are seeking to
donate to a local charity, where 100% of your donation
is spent exclusively for the benefit of our clients, (no
overhead whatsoever), please prayerfully consider the
IC Daybreak program. Our program is funded solely
through private donations and we need your financial
support to continue this outreach to our homeless
brothers and sisters. May God bless you for your
generosity.
Please remit donations to IC Daybreak of Elmhurst,
P. O. Box 2033, Elmhurst, IL 60126

Evening of Prayer for the Protection of the Unborn and Pro-Life Witness
On Friday, January 22nd, the 43rd Anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court Abortion
Case, Immaculate Conception Parish (134 Arthur St. Elmhurst) will host an Evening of Prayer
for the Protection of the Unborn in solidarity with the March for Life 2016. The evening
begins with the Rosary at 6:30 pm, The Sacrifice of the Mass will be celebrated in the
Church at 7:00 pm, following the Rosary. Pro-life witness, Jessia Schuessler, will speak
in
the Agnesian Room from 8:00—9:15 pm.
Jessica Schuessler is a young Christian mom with four children who is on fire to stop the tragedy of abortion. She goes
to Planned Parenthood-Aurora most weeks to pray and plead with men and women not to have an abortion. In March
2015, she began sending the book Deliver Us from Abortion: Awakening the Church to End the Killing of America’s
Children by Brian Fisher to local pastors and priests. Currently, 675 pastors/priests have received the book (covering all
churches in Kane County and almost all of Dupage County). Jessica will talk about how she found forgiveness from her
own abortion when she was 14 yrs old, how she is reaching out to others and answer questions from attendees. Snacks
and refreshments will be served. All are invited. Bring the entire family. Please contact Mary Kay at
mklivorsi@comcast.net with any questions or call (630) 279-5825.
