The water comes from the Bagniers hot spring and is 18°C. 1 Due to building work in the Place Verdun and Place des Prêcheurs squares from July 2016, the markets will be held elsewhere. 4 FONTAINE DU ROI RENÉ Built in 1819, it shows a statue of the king holding a cluster of Muscat grapes that he grew in Provence. 5 PLACE ET FONTAINE DE LA MAIRIE Built in 1756, the fountain decorated with gargoyles spewing water from the Pinchinats spring is in the centre of an outstanding complex: Town Hall, Corn Exchange and Clock Tower. 6 PLACE DES CARDEURS ET FONTAINE AMADO Italian-style esplanade dotted with cafe and restaurant terraces, it has a fountain created in 1977 by the Aix artist Jean Amado. PLACE DE L’ARCHEVÊCHÉ The Archbishop’s Palace (1650-1730), adorned with a fine Regency door, hosts the Aix-en-Provence Festival (opera) in its courtyard every July. www.festival-aix.com 7 PLACE ET FONTAINE D’ALBERTAS Baroque and Rococo site, completed in 1745 for the Marquis d’Albertas in the style of royal squares in Paris. The fountain dates from 1912. 8 9 PLACE ET FONTAINE DES 3 ORMEAUX Built on the site of a well and pleasantly shaded, the square has a 17th century fountain. 10 PLACE ET FONTAINE DES 4 DAUPHINS Surrounded by mansions including the Hôtel de Boisgelin (stunning wrought iron courtyard, façade decorated with monumental friezes). Fountain built in 1667. 11 MUR VÉGÉTAL 2008 (Patrick Blanc, botaniste) 650m2 surface area, 27m high and 22000 plants make this the largest green wall in France. 12 MUR D’EAU 2014 (Christian Ghion, designer) 700m2, 17m drop over a 56m width which makes it the largest curtain of water in Europe. 2 PASSAGE AGARD • Former Carmelite monastery, linking Cours Mirabeau to the Law Courts. Across the Cours: the Oblates’ Chapel, former Carmelite monastery chapel. In the former White Penitents’ Chapel (1654) on Place Jean Boyer, the Jean Planque collection displays works by Monet, Van Gogh, Rouault, Dufy, Braque, De Staël, Picasso and others. 3 MAUSOLÉE JOSEPH SEC • Dating from 1792, this is one of few examples of Revolution architecture. MAISON DE DARIUS MILHAUD • Classical music composer. He was buried in Aix-en-Provence in 1974. The building houses the ARCADE (Regional Centre for the Performing Arts). 4 5 PALAIS DE JUSTICE • Built on the former Palais des Comtes Souverains and completed in 1832. 6 HÔTEL DE VILLE • Completed in 1670, remarkable Italian-style façade with carved wooden doors and old town belfry with astronomical clock, 1661. 7 ANCIENNE HALLE AUX GRAINS • Completed in 1761, topped with an allegorical pediment representing the Rhône and the Durance. 8 HÔTEL MAYNIER D’OPPÈDE • Named after a very old family of magistrates, its current form dates back to 1757.
