Like a car, bikes have a right to their space in a lane on the road and other drivers must yield to them. Drive on the right. Bikes are a vehicles and should be in the right side of the street, traveling in the same direction as other traffic. Riding against traffic is extremely dangerous. Sidewalk riding is also more dangerous and not legal in some cities. 3 Yield to Cross Traffic. Bikes are smaller than cars and harder to spot. Only enter a roadway, especially from alleys or driveways, when it is safe to do so. And, please obey all traffic control devices. 4 Yield for lane changes. When preparing to make a turn it is often necessary to change lanes. Before changing lanes: • Plan ahead and be predictable Photo courtesy of John Hardy • Scan to make sure it’s clear (This also communicates your intention to other drivers.) • Signal your intention to turn 5 • Use caution and never move more than one lane at a time or move in front of vehicle in a way to cause a hazard. Speed positioning. Usually stopped or parked vehicles are closest to the curb with faster vehicles towards the center. Passing or overtaking traffic on the right is not something other drivers expect and can be risky. If traveling at the same speed as traffic, take control of the whole lane. 6 Ride as far to the right as practicable. That does not mean to ride on the curb or in the gutter, where it is harder for cars to spot a bike. It does mean leaving room for cars to pass if the lane is wide enough to share. (A 14’ lane allows cars the required 3’ to pass). If in a narrower lane or there are hazards, take full control of the lane so that other vehicles do not attempt to pass unsafely. MDH has helped over 180 schools across Minnesota begin or expand their Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs through the Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP). Early successes, such as Red Pine Elementary School in Eagan, Minn., show that Safe Routes to School can help get more families bicycling and walking. In just three years, Red Pine’s SRTS program has doubled the number of children bicycling and walking to school and has reduced traffic congestion problems during drop-off and pick-up times. SRTS combines safety, enforcement, education and promotion activities to encourage more families to choose an active way of getting to and from school. Children under the age of 18 should get 60 minutes of physical activity each day top stay healthy. Bicycling or walking to and from school can help kids meet that goal. Research also shows that getting physical activity helps children arrive to school more focused and ready to learn. “When I see kids walk and bike to school, I see kids that are full of energy the minute they step into our school,” said Red Pine Principal Gary Anger. SRTS programs can benefit the whole community. Safety improvements help not only children and families, but seniors and others walking or bicycling in the area around the school. Community members can also get involved as volunteers as Safe Routes to School champions to get a new program started or to help with specific programs such as bicycle trains or walking school buses.
