Imagine waiting at home for an expected loved one, but they never arrive. You begin calling hospitals and they do not have your family member there, although they do have “John Does.” Now imagine you were in an accident on the way home from work and you were unable to speak. How would the paramedics contact your loved ones? These reallife scenarios can be prevented with just one ICE Key Tag. When it comes to receiving true “emergency” care, Lakeview Regional is now offering an added assurance for patients. The ICE (In Case of Emergency) Key Tag was recently developed as a means to alert first responders and hospital personnel of who to call if a patient is unresponsive during an emergency. That person can then alert the medical team of any allergies, medications or specific medical conditions. “When seconds count, the ICE Key Tag can mean life or death,” states Dr. Charles Muntan, Lakeview Regional’s Emergency Department Medical Director. “If an unconscious patient is brought to us, we can certainly provide the necessary treatment, however, it is most desirable to find out as much information about a patient in order to deliver the optimum care.” Lakeview Regional Medical Center is centrally located between Mandeville and Covington, making it the provider of choice when an emergency arises. Lakeview Regional is staffed with boardcertified, emergency trained physicians specializing in chest pain, heart attacks, stroke, and is the first facility to offer 24-hour trauma coverage, including trauma surgery. Lakeview Regional was also the first hospital on the Northshore to offer 24/7 neurosurgery services for patients. “At Lakeview Regional, we are dedicated to providing the best care possible,” states Bret Kolman, Lakeview Regional’s Chief Executive Officer. “Being able to reach emergency contacts helps us achieve that goal; and in turn offers a sense of assurance for our patients.” We Are ER ad We Fix Broken Hearts When Jeff’s chest pain got so bad that he knew he couldn’t ignore it, he thought about driving across the lake to seek care. At the last minute, Jeff decided instead to drive the two blocks to Lakeview Regional’s ER.* Shortly after arriving at Lakeview Regional, Jeff collapsed on the floor, unresponsive. Jeff had a heart attack. Jeff realizes now that his decision not to drive the Causeway not only saved his life, but probably the lives of others. But all that changed one day when she began having chest pains at work and was taken to a hospital close by. While there, she underwent an angiogram— a diagnostic tool used to uncover heart and blood vessel conditions. April’s heart turned out to be fine and her symptoms resolved. But within three weeks of the procedure she began having horrible pain in her right leg. “My primary care doctor ordered an ultrasound to see what could be wrong. I remember the tech stopping in the middle of the procedure to rush to get the doctor,” April says. The ultrasound showed a major blood clot that had settled in April’s hip following the angiogram. The complication is very rare but is a known potential risk of the procedure. Over the next two years, April underwent multiple procedures to clear the blockages, including three femoral bypasses. But the clots kept returning, as did the horrific leg pain that came with them. The procedures eventually made things worse and caused blockages all the way down to April’s lower leg. She couldn’t sleep or stand and was eventually wheelchair bound as walking was impossible. She lost her job and had virtually given up hope of having a normal life again. With seemingly no other options, April decided that amputation of her leg was her only choice. Prior to the surgery, April was told to get clearance from a cardiologist and was referred to Dr. Frank Arena, lead physician at the Cardiac Vascular and Vein Center at Lakeview Regional Medical Center in Covington. April says everything changed during that appointment. “Dr. Arena told me he thought he could save my leg with an angioplasty. At first, I told him ‘no’ because by that time I already had my mind set on the amputation. I had a second opinion that agreed I should amputate. I didn’t want to get my hopes up—I hadn’t walked in two years when I met Dr. Arena,” says April. “But he convinced me to try. He told me not to give up, and that if I was willing to fight, he would fight with me. After he walked out of the room, I cried. I said to myself, ‘This has got to be my chance.’” The procedure Dr. Arena suggested would attempt to open blockages in April’s damaged blood vessels to restore better blood flow. Dr. Arena compares the vessels in the leg to an interstate system—most of the exits on April’s interstate were closed. Not having blood flow was causing her leg to die, and restoring flow was not going to be easy. He had to study April’s case and the notes from her past procedures extensively to determine how her native anatomy had been reworked. “All we were left to work with really were grafts,” explains Dr. Arena. “We just had to make what we were left with work.” The angioplasty, which coincidentally was performed on the same date that April’s leg amputation surgery was scheduled, was successful. After a few months of rehabilitation, April was walking and enjoying life again. She now works six hours at a time on her feet cooking in her daughter’s café and enjoys playing with her grandchildren. Her last ultrasound showed good flow in her leg, as well as positive signs that her remaining native anatomy has maintained since the procedure. April may need a follow up angioplasty every five years or so to maintain good blood flow, but Dr. Arena is optimistic about her prognosis. Dr. Arena says that an angiogram is a common procedure that diagnoses real problems and can lead to lives being saved, but he stresses that all procedures come with risks. He encourages all patients who undergo an angiogram to recognize the signs and symptoms of blood clots and know where to go to treat them. Most important is choosing a doctor who uses an experienced team in the catheterization lab, who will listen closely to patient concerns and who will pay attention to details. April knows how lucky she is to have found a doctor as passionately aggressive as Dr. Arena. She credits him with not just saving her leg, but giving her back a normal life. “I thank God every day for him,” she says. “He’s my angel!” 3 Marketing, Media and Press Releases Real Age Test Offered Through Sharecare Lakeview Regional Medical Center is pleased to announce it now offers the RealAge® test on its website— lakeviewregional.com, powered by Sharecare, an award-winning comprehensive health and wellness engagement platform. Three speakers and 15 vendors presented topics related to girl’s health issues to an audience of 100 people. The theme, “Be Healthy. Be Happy. Be You.,” focused on self-esteem, healthy eating, and internet safety. “Girls’ Health Day was designed to promote healthy, positive behaviors in girls between the ages of 6 and 16,” states Dr. Brandee Simon-Davis, Girls’ Health Day organizer and physician at Lakeview Regional Medical Center. “When girls are given the tools they need to be strong at a young age, they will grow up to be strong women, and know how to make responsible and healthy choices.” Girls took part in discussions presented by Sherrí Hansen (owner, Culinary Kids), Cathy Williams, Steve Babin, Christine Howell (local practicing counselor), Emily Ruffino (Franco’s trainer & Katie Baird and nutritionist), Catherine Wilburn, MD (owner of Nutrition Company), and Noah Cockfield, IT Director (social media safety and internet safety). Louisiana State Troopers discussed seat belt and booster seat safety and distributed materials on bullying. Girls learned about making healthy food choices from the Junior League Kids in the Kitchen project and participated in fitness and interactive health activities. Several local health and wellness vendors provided information to help girls educate themselves on topics relevant to their own lives. Other activities included free health screenings (vision, hearing, BMI measurements and blood pressure assessments) by local physicians. The event also included an opportunity to “Be a Doctor for the Day,” by performing simulated surgical activities using the da Vinci® surgical robot. AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION NAMES LAKEVIEW REGIONAL A GOLD LEVEL FIT-FRIENDLY WORKSITE Walking Path set as site for Stroller Walk Meet-Up for Moms with Strollers Lakeview Regional Medical Center is pleased to announce it has been named to the American Heart Association’s annual list of Gold FitFriendly Worksites. This is the second year Lakeview Regional has received this designation. The American Heart Association’s Fit-Friendly Worksites Recognition Program recognizes employers who champion the health of their employees by creating physical activity programs within the workplace. In 2009, Lakeview Regional introduced the Start! Walking Path as part of the national initiative to be a catalyst for positive change in American business. Recently, the path, which measures 3 tenths of a mile long, was selected as the first American Heart Association officially designated Walking Path on the Northshore. “We are proud to be recognized as a leader in the national movement to improve corporate wellness,” states Bret Kolman, Lakeview Regional’s Chief Executive Officer. “On a daily basis, Lakeview Regional is committed to providing physical activity and wellness opportunities for our employees to improve their overall health and well-being.” Lakeview Regional’s commitment to a healthier workplace environment also includes a comprehensive wellness program and, more recently, the addition of an H2U Health Center, both of which are creating a culture of health within the hospital community. In addition to promoting healthier lifestyles to its employees, Lakeview Regional is committed to offering opportunities for better health to the community. On Tuesday, June 23 at 10AM, moms with strollers were invited to a Stroller Meet-up where they can join other moms for a walk along the Start! Walking Path. According to the American Heart Association, studies suggest that implementing a worksite physical activity program and promoting a culture of activity will help increase productivity, reduce absenteeism, lower turnover and reduce healthcare costs. Lakeview Regional’s recognition as a Gold Level Fit-Friendly Worksite will serve as an encouragement to other businesses to participate and demonstrate similar activity practices for their employees. 29 In The Community “GREAT SAVES” DON’T ONLY HAPPEN ON THE BASEBALL DIAMOND Lakeview Regional honored EMS Heroes during National EMS Week During National EMS Week, Lakeview Regional recognizes and gives back to EMS, our healthcare partners who make a difference every day for our patients. EMS Great Save Event honored those first responders that saved lives through quick action and competent care. In honor of National EMS Dennis Boushie, operator/EMT, St. Tammany Fire District 12; Week (May 17–23, 2015), Lakeview John Becklehimer, ED RN; Mary Folse, patient, David Folse, patient’s Regional Medical Center recognized husband; Dr. Ramy El Khoury, Lakeview Regional Medical Center the dedication of those who provide Stroke Director; Dr. Jay Desalvo, ER physician, Lakeview Regional the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine’s “front line.” At the Medical Center; Elliott Ory, paramedic, St. Tammany Fire District 12; event, one patient was reunited with Jeanne Terrebonne, RN ED her EMS crew and medical staff that was instrumental in her care and subsequent recovery, providing a rare opportunity to say “thank you,” a step that is often a significant part of the healing process. “We thought National EMS Week was the perfect time to honor the emergency medical services personnel for their fast, efficient, and compassionate treatment,” states Bret Kolman, Lakeview Regional Chief Executive Officer. “If it wasn’t for the immediate response of these individuals many would not have survived or would have faced severe debilitating deficits.” First responders seldom learn of the outcomes of the patients they treat. This Great Save Event, which is set to become a quarterly event, will offer a chance for updates and reunions. EMS Patient Testimonial — Mrs. MARY Folse During a recent stay with family in Covington, Mr. Folse found his wife on the ground unresponsive. Paramedics from Fire Department 12 who responded were expecting a head injury, but upon assessment of Mrs. Folse’s condition they realized it was more likely a stroke. Paramedics immediately took Mrs. Folse to Lakeview Regional Medical Center. During transport, Lakeview Regional activated Code Purple, an internal alert for a potential stroke patient which mobilizes appropriate staff and ensures the CT scanner is ready. Mrs. Folse had a significant stroke involving a blood clot, which required administration of tPA to help dissolve the clot and restore blood flow to the area of her brain that was affected. As any medical decision can be frightening, Mr. Folse relied on the expertise of ER physician Dr. Jay DeSalvo and the neurologist on call, Dr. Ramy El Khoury. He said, “Do for my wife whatever you would do for yours.” (continued on p. 31) 30 Patient Mary Folse & Brittany Mobley, ER Nurse In The Community Mrs. MARY Folse Testimonial, CONT’D… her “rebirth” at Lakeview Regional on the night of her stroke. Although tPA administration is given at Lakeview, the nature of Mrs. Folse’s stroke necessitated that she be transported to a higher level of stroke care in order for her to have the best chance of a positive outcome. She was transported by Acadian Ambulance to Tulane Medical Center, a comprehensive stroke center with interventional capabilities, not currently available on the Northshore. Following her procedure and inpatient rehabilitation therapy, Mrs. Folse returned to Covington to live with her daughter and continue outpatient rehabilitation therapy and occupational therapy at Lakeview Regional. She is doing extremely well considering the severity of her stroke. Mrs. Folse’s husband spoke on her behalf at the event. He relayed the story of that night, his voice full of emotion as he recounted the event. He spoke to the caregivers and thanked them Dr. Ramy El Khoury, for helping his Stroke Center Director family in their time of need. Administration of the hospital also thanked the EMS crews for their ability to assess that Mrs. Folse was having a stroke and not a head injury, and for making the decision to bring her to Lakeview’s ER, a certified primary stroke center. On May 21, Lakeview Regional hosted their firstever EMS Great Save Event, highlighting Mrs. Folse’s story and re-uniting her with the paramedics and ER staff who cared for her that night. The event was held during EMS Appreciation week as a way of highlighting the importance of the relationship between first responders and hospitals in emergency care. Medics from both Fire Department 12 and Acadian Ambulance were present to receive recognition for their roles, and Mrs. Folse was presented with a new birth certificate commemorating Fight like a “Fight Like A Girl” Honored Breast Cancer Awareness Month Lakeview Regional Medical Center Women’s Center, the most technologically progressive hospital on the Northshore, is committed to the fight against breast cancer. We are humbled to be a part of making those happy Christmas memories for some of the most disadvantaged families in St. Tammany Parish.” According to organizers of St. Tammany Project Christmas, 1,500 children from nearly 500 families across St. Tammany Parish were presented with gifts in 2015.
