MultiCatchTM Shell Catcher Instuctions For 12 Gauge Beretta AL391 Urika, Urika 2, Teknys, 390 and 3901 Model Shotguns Safety is always first and foremost in the use and operation of firearms. Before installing the MultiCatchTM you must be fully familiar with the safe operation of your gun and all of its features. This model of the MultiCatchTM is only for use on 12 gauge Beretta AL391 Urika, Urika 2, Teknys, 390 and 3901 model shotguns. This model of the MultiCatchTM does not fit the Beretta A391 Extrema or Extrema 2 guns. It is only for use with 2 ¾ inch plastic shotshells which are sized or re-sized to factory dimensions with typical target shooting loads with 7/8 to 1&1/8 ounce payloads. Make sure your gun is in good working order and is completely unloaded. Check both the guns chamber and magazine to make sure there are no live shells in the gun, and make sure the guns safety is engaged and the barrel is pointed in a safe direction at all times. Read These Instructions COMPLETELY START TO FINISH BEFORE Beginning Installation Installation Review Figure 1 to become familiar with the different parts of the MultiCatchTM. Place the gun on a clean flat surface that won’t scratch the gun with the right (ejection port) side of the gun facing up and the barrel pointed to the right in a safe direction. Position a cloth or towel under the gun to ensure that the receiver is level with the table top and not tipped. Doing so will aid in properly positioning the MultiCatchTM on your gun. Close the bolt and remove the factory supplied bolt operating handle from the bolt according to the gun manufacturers instructions. Wipe the indicated areas of the receiver with a soft cloth and common rubbing alcohol to clean the surface for attachment of the MultiCatchTM mounting bases and let dry. Install the Parking Handle in the bolt in place of the factory supplied operating handle. The shock absorber portion of the Parking Handle should point to the right (barrel end) after installation. Ensure the Parking Handle is completely seated in the bolt. See Figure 2. Next remove the Brass Hinge Pin from the Front Base of the MultiCatchTM so the lower half of the Front Base separates. An adhesive strip is attached to the underside of the lower half. See Fig 3. The lower half of the Front Base is attached to the gun immediately in front of the ejection port as shown in Fig 4. It is important that this piece be properly positioned with the left edge of the lower half flush with the forward edge of the ejection port and properly aligned with it. On Teknys model guns there is a styling recess in this area and you may want to trim an extra piece of the supplied adhesive strip to fill in this recess to make it level with the rest of the receiver. 1 With the bolt in the closed position hold the lower half of the Front Base with the right hand so that the contoured surface with the adhesive strip is facing down with the hinge side facing to the right (barrel end). The upper surface of the lower half of the Front Base has two indexing marks which are the same width apart as the sides of the Parking Handle. See Fig. 4 With the adhesive strip protective film still in place hold the lower half of the Front Base in front of the Parking Handle so that the indexing marks line up with the sides of the Parking Handle and the left edge is flush with the front edge of the ejection port as shown in Fig 5. While maintaining this alignment place a piece of masking tape on the receiver so that the upper edge of the tape aligns with the lower edge of the properly positioned lower half of the Front Base. See Fig. 6 Next lock the bolt in the open position and remove the protective film from the adhesive strip. Without touching the receiver, re-position the lower edge of the lower half so that it is aligned with the upper edge of the masking tape and the left edge of the lower half is flush with the front edge of the ejection port. Press down firmly so that the base attaches to the gun as shown in Fig. 4. Then remove the masking tape. Next remove the Parking Handle from the bolt and set it aside. Re-assemble the hinge consisting of the lower and upper halves of the Front Base and re-insert the Brass Hinge Pin. See Fig. 7. Next insert the lower half of the Rear Base into its recess in the upper half leaving the protective film on the adhesive strip in place. See Fig 8. While gently pressing on the lower half of the Rear Base to hold it in its recess, lower the combined halves of the Rear Base on to the receiver. The MultiCatchTM is shipped with the Jaws in the closed/released position. However to ensure that the Jaws are in the closed/released position, slide the Jaw Trigger rearward with your finger. If the Jaws are in the open/cocked position, this will cause them to snap into the closed/released position. See Fig.9. The closed/released Jaw’s will hold the Jaw Trigger out of the way so that it does not interfere with re-installing the Parking Handle. Re-insert the Parking Handle into the open bolt. See Fig 10. Always ensure the Jaw’s are in the closed/released position before inserting the Parking Handle into the bolt to ensure it is fully seated and will not dislodge. Align the MultiCatchTM so that the Parking Handle is centered between the Rails with the bolt locked in the open position. Use a piece of masking tape placed on the receiver to mark the lower edge of the Rear Base when the Parking Handle is properly centered between the Rails. See Fig 11. Next remove the Parking Handle from the bolt and remove the protective film from the adhesive strip on the lower half of the Rear Base and re-install in its pocket in the upper half. Lower the assembled Rear Base onto the receiver so that its lower edge is aligned with the upper edge of the masking tape and press firmly so that the adhesive strip attaches to the receiver and then remove the masking tape and re-install the Parking Handle into the open bolt. Next, take a single live shell and using the crimped end depress the Jaw Cams all the way down until the Jaw Trigger springs forward to engage the rear ends of both Jaws and holds them in the open/cocked position. See Fig. 13. The bolt can then be released and proper clearance with the Rails on each side of the Parking 2 Handle in the forward position can then be verified. Never close the bolt with the Parking Handle installed unless the Jaws are fully cocked. Doing so will cause excessive wear on the Parking Handle and impair the operation of your MultiCatchTM over time. When properly installed the upper Rail of the MultiCatchTM should be parallel to the top of the guns receiver and there should be approximately a 1/32” gap between each Rail and the side of the Parking Handle when the bolt is in both the open and closed positions. See Figs. 11 & 12. A 1/32” drill bit can be used to verify correct spacing if desired. The gap doesn’t have to be perfect but it should be close. It may take a couple of try’s to get the proper alignment and extra adhesive strips are included for that purpose. The strips can be trimmed with scissors to fit the mounting bases. Please note that the protective film on each side of the adhesive strip has a different color. The red print side should be attached to the mounting bases and the black print side should be attached to the gun. This will help ensure that the strip will release completely from the gun and adhere to the mounting base after removal. Operation At an appropriate shooting location ensure that the gun is unloaded and the safety is on and that you and others in your immediate vicinity are wearing eye and ear protection appropriate for shooting. Hold the gun in your left hand with the installed MultiCatchTM facing up and the barrel pointed in a safe direction. Make sure the Jaws are cocked in the open position and if not take a single live shell and using the crimped end depress the Jaw Cams all the way down until the Jaw Trigger springs forward to engage the rear ends of both Jaws and holds them open. See Fig 13. Following the gun manufacturers instructions, open the bolt all the way so that it locks in the open position. Single Shot Operation Always verify that the Jaws are fully opened/cocked before firing the gun. Firing the gun with the Jaws closed/un-cocked can severely damage your MultiCatchTM . For firing a single shot, take the same live shell and align the rim of the shell base with the Rail Slots (see Fig. 9) and drop the shell into the receiver just as you would normally load the gun for a single shot. See Fig 14. Chamber the shell by closing the bolt. Shoulder the gun, point it in a safe firing direction, disengage the safety and when ready, fire the gun in a safe direction. When loaded with a single shell the bolt should automatically lock in the open position after firing and the ejected shell will be caught by the Jaws and Rails as shown in Fig 15. Remove the ejected shell from the MultiCatchTM by sliding it forward along the Rails. The rim of the shell will engage the Jaw Cams and by continuing to firmly push the shell along the Rails the Jaws will open. Guide the shell into the front of the MultiCatchTM. As this occurs the Jaw Trigger will again slide forward and engage the rear ends of the 3 Jaws and hold them open for reloading. Continue sliding the shell forward until it is removed through the front of the MultiCatchTM. See Fig 16. Repeat the loading and firing sequence with a single live shell as described above until you are comfortable with single shot operation. This will also help to “break in” your new MultiCatchTM. Two Shot Operation Re-engage the safety and make sure both Jaws are being held in the open/cocked position by the Jaw Trigger. If they are not, cock the Jaws with the crimped end of a live shell and load it into the guns chamber as described above. Firing the gun with the Jaw’s in the closed/un-cocked position can severely damage your MultiCatchTM . Next load a second live round into the guns magazine as you normally would. Shoulder the gun and point it in a safe shooting direction. When ready, disengage the safety and fire the gun in a safe direction with a single pull of the trigger. After firing, the first shell will be caught by the Jaws and Rails. However because the gun was loaded with two shells, the bolt will not lock in the open position after firing the first shot. After ejecting the first shell the bolt will travel forward in order to chamber the second shell and in doing so the Parking Handle will push the first ejected shell along the Rails and engage the Jaw Cams thereby automatically re-cocking the Jaws and “parking” the first ejected shell in the shell parking area of the MultiCatchTM Front Base. The gun is then immediately ready to fire the second shell. See Fig 17. Next, fire the second shell in a safe direction. After firing, the bolt should lock in the open position with the first ejected shell retained in the Parking Area and the second ejected shell caught and held by the Jaws and Rails. See Fig 18. Slide the first ejected shell forward out of the parking area and remove it from the MultiCatchTM . Then slide the second ejected shell along the Rails as before to re-cock the Jaws. Continue sliding the second ejected shell through the parking area to remove it from the MultiCatchTM. Both ejected shells can now be properly disposed of or retained for reloading. Repeat the loading and firing sequence with two live shells as described above until you are comfortable with two shot operation. This will further assist in the “break in” of your new MultiCatchTM. This model of the MultiCatchTM unit is only designed to catch two shells. Never load your gun with more than two shells with the MultiCatchTM installed on it. Clearing a Jam All autoloaders jam at least once in a while. When one occurs, make sure the gun is pointed in a safe direction at all times and place the safety in the on position. If you experience a classic “stove pipe” jam with the shell partially ejected through the MultiCatchTM Rails (see Fig 19) the jam can usually be cleared by firmly grasping the ejected portion of the spent shell and pulling rearward (to pull the bolt back slightly) and outward until the shell rim engages the Rails. The shell can then be slid along the Rails 4 and removed through the front of the MultiCatchTM unit as you would normally. Make sure the Jaws are properly re-cocked after doing this and if they are not, re-cock them manually using the crimp end of a live shell as described above in the “Operation Section”. Also ensure that the Parking Handle is fully seated in the bolt as a “stove pipe” jam can sometimes dislodge the Parking Handle from its fully seated position in the bolt. If you experience an internal jam where a fired shell is not partially ejected, make sure the gun is pointed in a safe direction at all times and place the Trigger safety in the on position. Remove the Parking Handle and either remove the MultiCatchTM unit from the gun by pulling the Brass Hinge Pin from the Front Base and lifting the main MultiCatchTM unit off of its mounting bases as described below in the “Removal Section”. This is the recommended method for accessing an internal jam. However after removing the Parking Handle, the Rear Mounting Base Tab can be gently flexed rearward to release the Rear Base of the MultiCatchTM. The MultiCatchTM unit can then be pivoted forward using the Front Base hinge. See Fig 20. However if you use this method be very careful not to over flex the Rear Mounting Base Tab as it can break which is not covered by the warranty. Which ever method you use, once the ejection port area is exposed the jam can be cleared. The MultiCatchTM unit is re-attached to the gun by reversing whichever method you used to remove it. After clearing a jam always ensure the MultiCatchTM Jaw’s are re-cocked before loading and/or firing the next round. Severe damage to the MultiCatchTM can result if you fire the gun with the Jaws in the closed/un-cocked position. Unloading Unfired Shells Make sure the guns safety is engaged and the barrel is pointed in a safe direction. Unfired shells can be unloaded by removing the main MultiCatchTM unit from the gun as described above or with it attached by making sure the Jaws are in the open/cocked position. Hold the gun with the ejection port side of the gun facing downward and following the gun manufacturers instructions for removing live shells, manually cycle the bolt back and forth by hand using the Parking Handle as shown in Fig 21. As each live round is ejected it will be caught by the Rails and Jaws just as a fired shell would be and it can then be manually guided along the Rails by hand and through the front of the MultiCatchTM. Removal of the MultiCatchTM Make sure the gun is completely unloaded. Check both the chamber and magazine and make sure the barrel is pointed in a safe direction. With the Jaws in the open/cocked position open the bolt all the way so that it locks in the open position according to the gun manufacturer’s instructions. Lay the gun on a nonscratching flat surface, ejection port side up. Remove the Parking Handle by firmly grasping it and pull it straight out from the bolt and set it aside. 5 Next remove the Brass Hinge Pin from the Front Base by grasping the bent end and pulling it out of the hinge and set it aside. Next grasp the upper half of the Front Base of the MultiCatchTM and lift the entire unit away from the gun. See Fig 22. It should come clear of both mounting bases and set it aside. Your guns original operating handle can be re-installed and you can use your gun as you normally would leaving the MultiCatchTM mounting bases attached to the gun so that the MultiCatchTM can be easily re-attached later. If you prefer, each mounting base can easily be removed by firmly twisting it until the adhesive material “shears” allowing removal from the gun. For re-installation, replacement adhesive strips can be attached to the mounting bases and trimmed to fit. Maintenance and Storage Always make sure the gun is completely unloaded before performing any maintenance on or storing your gun. Check both the chamber and magazine. A small drop of oil should be periodically placed on each Jaw Spring, the Trigger Spring and the Jaw Hinges and a dab of light grease can also be applied to the rear edges of the Jaw Cams as shown in Fig 23. The Rails should also receive a light coating of oil periodically to avoid rust. The main MultiCatchTM unit should be periodically removed from the gun and gently cleaned with a soft brush to remove any accumulated dirt or powder residue. A cloth with a small amount of an appropriate solvent can be used to loosen stubborn material. If you store your gun with the MultiCatchTM attached you should do so with the bolt locked in the open position and with the MultiCatchTM Jaws released from the Jaw Trigger. The Jaws can be released from the Jaw Trigger by pushing rearward on the Parking Handle to push the Jaw Trigger all the way back to release the Jaws from the cocked position. PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING The MultiCatchTM uses 3M brand CommandTM Strip Mounting and Replacement Strips to attach to the gun. A package of these is supplied with each MultiCatchTM . Additional strips can be obtained at most hardware stores. The strips supplied will resist some moisture but are not recommended for use in very rainy weather. 3M makes a more water resistant version of its CommandTM Strip brand which is also available at most hardware stores. Although the strips are very durable, try to avoid long term exposure to direct summertime sunlight as the adhesive can soften at high temperatures. If you must leave your gun sitting in a gun rack exposed to the summer sun for a long time, try to position it so that the side of the gun with the MultiCatchTM attached is not exposed to the direct rays of the summer sun. Please note that the CommandTM Strips used are about .040 inches thick and raise the MultiCatchTM off the side of the gun by that amount. This allows the pivoting Jaws to 6 clear the guns receiver without contacting it. If you intend to use some other method (adhesive or mechanical attachment) to attach the MultiCatchTM to your gun be sure that whatever method you use also provides sufficient clearance for the Jaws to pivot. Some guns eject spent shells farther than others. On guns which have very vigorous shell ejection an occasional shell may “pop through” the Rails. If this occurs the “pop through” shell should be on the ground near your feet. Never replace the Jaw Trigger Spring supplied (See Fig 8) with another spring. The size and tension of the supplied spring is necessary for proper operation of the MultiCatchTM . Using a different spring could prevent proper operation and result in severe damage to the MultiCatchTM and will void the warranty. The MultiCatchTM has a thirty (30) day from date of shipment full money back guarantee (returned in good condition in original packaging) and a one year repair or replacement warranty (shipping excluded in each case). We hope you enjoy your MultiCatchTM and that it makes your recreational shooting experience more pleasant and convenient! 7 Figure 1 Parking Handle Shock absorber Lower Front Base Lower Rear Base Rear Cams Jaws Front Cams Brass Hinge Pin Rear Base Shell parking area Jaw Trigger Rails Front Base Figure 2 Factory Operating Handle Removed Clean Area with Rubbing Alcohol Parking Handle Installed in Bolt 8 Clean Area with Rubbing Alcohol Figure 3 Hinge pin Adhesive Strip with Protective Film in Place Figure 4 Lower Half of Front Base Properly Installed Index Marks 9 Index marks Figure 5 Index marks Figure 6 Masking Tape 10 Figure 7 Re-align upper and lower halves of Front Base and re-insert hinge pin Figure 8 Lower rear base properly inserted in pocket of upper half Trigger Spring 11 Figure 9 Slide Jaw Trigger back with finger until Jaws are released Parking Handle re-installed and properly seated in bolt.
