Commodore`s Log - Newport Shores
September 2015 Commodore’s Log Newport Yacht Club 81 Skagit Key Bellevue, WA 98006 General Manager: Eric Bartleson eric@newportshoreswa.org Membership Director: Beth Paschall beth@newportshoreswa.org With the summer winding down, you may be asking “where did all those kids come from?” Bellevue schools started on September 1st which means increased foot traffic as school children will be waiting at the neighborhood bus stops or walking home from school. The community wide speed limit is 25 mph, which can be fast when there are young children excited to be going or coming home from school. Speaking of kids, our fantastic clubhouse staff has put together some creative offerings for those Wacky Wednesday afternoons. An art class will be offered Contact Us: Clubhouse (Office) 425-747-3291 (Fax) 425-747-3297 once a month and the milk and cookies tradition will continue. Be sure to check out the web calendar for more information. Our annual Community Garage Sale is on September 12th. There is nothing like a massive swap meet to really bring neighbors together. I have had the opportunity to swap toys, sports equipment, and other gently used items with our Connect Online Newportshoreswa.org And on neighbors, in years past. Our neighborhood draws in deal seekers from throughout the Puget Sound which makes for a really unique experience. Lastly, can’t beat the heat! Although this amazingly warm and dry summer in Bellevue has been hard on our lawns, gardens, and trees, it’s provided a great opportunity to spend quality time https://www.facebook.com/groups/ Club Office Hours Open Daily (Sept 1-13th) Open Daily (Sept 14-26th) 9am-8pm 9am-6pm Beginning Sep 27 the office will be closed on Sunday and Mondays Pool Hours Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri Wed Sat-Sun 3:00pm – dusk 1:00pm – dusk 11:00am –dusk Pool Closes for the winter on Sunday, September 13th with friends and family at the pool, courts, and lake play. Hanging by the pool, playing tennis, riding bikes and scooters, playing flashlight tag, or just hanging with friends….ah, youth! But school is starting soon and with that, excited kids heading off to the bus stops. So, let’s watch out for them so they stay safe! A whole bunch of young girls and their moms from our neighborhood got to see Taylor Swift perform recently in Seattle. Word is a good time was had by all! Next time we think Taylor should perform at the Club so that even more of us can see her! We hear again about our own Matt Marrese (Decatur Key). He had a nice write-up in the weekly Bellevue Reporter recently (look for a copy on the Club’s bulletin board!) Matt’s heading off to UW soon and will participate in the Husky’s golf program. All the best, Matt! Odds and Ends…. Have you noticed that someone planted a tomato plant on the island at the neighborhood’s entrance? It’s producing! So, who is harvesting? Word is that Crescent Key has 4 Tesla owners! Really? That’s way, way above average! Caryl and Roy Cline (Crescent Key) decided there is way too much traffic around here and have moved to Wyoming! Yes, Wyoming! They both went to U of Wyoming and one of their daughters and family live there. So, why not, they said. What an adventure for them! Roy was NYC Board treasurer for 9 years. We will miss you, Clines! A personal comment – Clines gave me a bunch of medical paraphernalia to store that they did not want to take along – so, anyone needing a shower stool, walker, canes, etc. give me a call! Geri Vanik, widow of NYC’s first commodore, Mil Vanik, passed away recently. She left the neighborhood in the late 90’s and most recently lived in Bellevue. Also, my neighbor and friend, Chuck Nichol (Glacier Key) passed away last month. He was Paul Nichol’s (also Glacier Key) father. Chuck lived here for 16 years. Our condolences to Paul and Linda for their loss. I might take next month off…send any news you have and I’ll write it up for October’s newsletter. All for now….Norma 4 . Ben Froslan and Charlie Clemons won the JET league boys 12's doubles title at the year end tennis tournament! This is quite an accomplishment as the award has only gone to Newport 2 times since the beginning of Newport's participation in the event! Ben and Charlie were down 4-1 and came back to win the title 6-4 in a complete display of determination and tenacity! Congratulations Ben and Charlie!! Also, honorable mentions go to Caleb King and Sara Bowar who won the JET league sportsmanship tennis awards this year. Congratulations! Newport Knockouts on course for Play Offs With 3/4 of regular season done, The Newport Knockouts are sitting pretty in 2nd place with a 9-3 record. Results so far: With 5 games to cover and limited space, I will focus on a few of the highlights... Newport Knockouts at Sample Smashers W 17-14, W 14-4 Polarisites at Newport Knockouts W 10-11, W 10-12 Killer Kleats at Newport Knockouts W 5-8, L 22-21 Newport Knockouts at DreamKillers W 21-13, W 13-12 Newport Knockouts at Sample Smashers W 10-6, W 16-3 Brookshire Homes at Newport Knockouts L 20-13, L 16-13 vs DreamKillers, Mr Erik Baserman kindly stepped in as we were short. Having not played since he had a full head of hair we were unsure as to how he would cope with the intensity that is Bellevue Coed League 4. He stepped up to the plate and promptly hit a booming home run with his first at bat. He also made a great catch in outfield tracking the ball to make a telling contribution to the win and earn a spot on the roster. In the same game, Suzy Chalmers made a spectacular (not exaggerating) diving catch at 2 nd base that will take some beating as play of the season. In fact I will go so far as say, I will run through the neighborhood in a pair of Union Jack speedos, if we see a better play this season.... Home runs a plenty. Big hitters Greg Doyle, Chris Chalmers, Mason Denger and Dusty Highland have all hit plenty of home runs this season Mr Dependable Greg Doyle in left field. Covering the ground like a young gazelle in the summer sun there's not much that gets past Greg. Teams are slowly learning not to test his arm as he rockets them from way out in left field. With 2 double headers left in regular season, the goal of winning a back to back championships is in sight but will not be easy. There are 3-4 teams in the league that could win and Knockouts will need to be at their best to bring it home. 8 Kid’s Triathlon Results Congratulations to all 19 participants of this years NYC Kid's Triathlon!! Every participant finished the race and competed at a high level! The following had tremendous times and finished in the top of their age bracket. Please keep a watch for next years event in August! 8 and under 1st - Hudson Reed 2nd - Harry Blizzard 3rd - Mickey Gregov 11 and under 1st - Taiyo Barton 2nd - Gabe Hoffmann 3rd - Caleb King 13 and under 1st - Carter Holmes 2nd - Ethan Fowler 3rd - Josh Hoffmann Newport Yacht Club Tennis, Basketball, Sand Volleyball Court and Pool Use There are plenty more sunny days coming this fall. Though the pool closes on September 13th, there is a lot of recreation to be had here at the Club. As a reminder….The Newport Yacht Club property and sport facilities are for the exclusive use of club members and their invited guests only. Guests must be accompanied by an Active or Associate Member. Please report any suspected violation of use, with details, to the clubhouse staff. 9 Salmon Spawner Surveys Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife staff will be walking Coal Creek weekly, starting on the upstream side of Skagit Key and walking approximately 3 miles upstream. See the map here showing the area being surveyed, including the reach above Coal Creek Parkway that was added after the opening of the new culvert. The sockeye and chinook (“king”) salmon returns to Lake Washington are grim this year, likely due to the warm water barrier at the locks. Coho (“silver”) salmon typically return later, so hopefully they may not be as affected. NEIGHBORHOOD SAFETY TIPS—“BACK TO SCHOOL” Neighbors, the fall season is upon us and kids are heading back to school. This means more kids and cars out on the streets in the peak commuting hours, school buses and stranger danger. This is a reminder to watch out for yourself and others. Drive slowly. Be careful driving in the neighborhood, around schools and bus stops. Watch for children entering the street from behind buses or running to catch the bus. Be watchful around the neighborhood for suspicious activities, including parked cars and people that do not belong. If you encounter a solicitor, let them know that the neighborhood does not allow solicitation. If you are concerned, ALWAYS call 911. 10 Bronze Birch Borer Infecting Neighborhood Birch Trees By Diane Haelsig Over the past few months Dick and I have had our most westerly birch tree drop limbs and look wilted and brown at the top. Our master gardener, Jeff Bell, did some research and discovered that two of our three trees are likely infected with the Bronze Birch Borer. As we walk about the neighborhood we can see many other birch trees with the same symptoms. The pest arrived in the Northwest about a decade ago and tends to impact trees under stress due to drought and excessive heat. If you have birch trees in your landscape, look up. If the tops appear dead, you probably also have an infestation. Jeff was told that there is a systemic pesticide that can be applied in the winter that may save the trees. He recommended we contact Washington Tree Service to get an assessment and treatment plan. We are in the process of doing that but this article needed to go to press before we have the results to share. Contact me if you would like to know their recommendations.
