Super Science! This new season on Sesame Street, which premiered on September 27th, focuses on scientific investigation. Continuing our two-year emphasis on science-related topics, new storylines, animations, and live action films encourage children to create meaning of their world through discovery and investigation. Sesame Street’s colorful and loveable characters model asking questions, making observations using all of their senses, documenting changes, and forming conclusions. Children become true scientific investigators and thinkers as their innate sense of awe and curiosity about their everyday world is fostered. Season 41 Science Street Stories Chicken When It Comes to Thunderstorms Elmo, Abby, Chris, and Leela explain all about thunderstorms to some chickens and experiment with different ways to help them not be afraid. The Whoosh and Vanish Mystery Telly and Elmo become investigators to solve the mystery of their missing basketball by observing clues, forming hypotheses and experimenting with wind. Bert’s Pigeon Search Abby and Elmo search all over Sesame Street to identify a Blue Bar pigeon for Bert, who has never seen one before, by observing and comparing different types of birds. Camouflaged Challenge Elmo, Rosita and Chris investigate all around Sesame Street and photograph six camouflaged things so they can join the Camouflage Club. The Happy Scientists Telly, Rosita and Elmo become scientists to investigate if everyone on Sesame Street takes a bath What’s That Noise? Elmo, Luis and Maria discover a grasshopper in the house and, through observation and investigation, must figure out answers to their questions to get it back outside. Up in the Air Big Bird and Snuffy experiment with gravity and learn how important it is when Abby magically makes gravity disappear. Snuffle Sneeze Snuffy is allergic to something on Sesame Street so Gina helps him and Big Bird experiment to figure out what is making him sneeze. Where’s the Itsy Bitsy Spider? Elmo, Telly, and Rosita make observations and learn all about spiders as they search for where the Itsy Bitsy Spider might live, so they can sing to her when she crawls up the water spout. Puddle Jumping Elmo explores and learns to appreciate all of the great things about rain as he finds things to do while he waits to jump in puddles Fairy Tale Science Fair Telly and Baby Bear report on the Fairy Tale Science Fair, where Little Red Riding Hood observes and compares her Granny and the Big Bad Wolf, Cinderella investigates whether a pumpkin sinks or floats and the Three Little Pigs experiment with different materials to build a house. Rock Rock Band Elmo, Abby and Zoe help Vergil Von Vivaldi search for rocks to be part of his Rock Band by observing, comparing, and learning about different types of rocks. Dirtballs Oscar has had it with Sesame Street’s cleanliness and starts a new company to help dirty things up, but instead learns what lives inside dirt and how useful it can be. Super Grover 2.0 Season 41 of Sesame Street introduces a new segment, featuring the lovable, blue monster Super Grover. “Super Grover 2.0” is a continuation of this season’s curriculum, scientific investigation, allowing young children to become active participants in the process of scientific inquiry. In this all new segment, Super Grover comes to the rescue of those who need some super hero help. The segment, focusing on a STEM curriculum (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), promotes problem solving using critical thinking and scientific process skills. As Super Grover questions, observes, investigates and reports, our hero literally stumbles across the solution to scientific problems all across the world. Super Grover 2.0 Storylines A Prickly Problem Through observation and trial and error, Super Grover discovers the perfect ball for a cactus to play with in the desert. W hy Did the Chicken Cross the Wall? Super Grover helps a chicken get over a wall by discovering that levers are tools. W heels After a group of penguins are unable to complete their dance routine because of a giant block of ice in the middle of their dance floor, Super Grover discovers that wheels can move heavy things, including the block of ice. P ulleys After helping a family of birds lift a piano into their nest, Super Grover discovers that pulleys make it easier to lift heavy things. R ockin' the Boat Super Grover discovers how to balance a boat when each side is unequal in weight. H ow Now Down Cow Through trial and error, Super Grover helps a cow get down stairs by making a ramp. Encouraging children to explore the fascinating worlds of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics is what connects Sesame Street’s 41st season with the current national focus on STEM concepts. Additionally, the learning of specific STEM ideas is highlighted by focusing on the underlying process skills which connect all four STEM subjects: Observing and questioning Encouraging children to explore, discover, observe, wonder and mess about in their everyday world. Investigating Encouraging children to plan, set up, and create a fair test to gather information. Investigation is all about multiple trials and learning new information along the way. Analyzing and reporting Looking at the data collected and interpreting the evidence. Data collection is used to elaborate on the “because” in children’s thinking. Reflecting on the big idea Drawing meaning and reflecting on the “big idea” or take-home message. TM/© 2010 Sesame Workshop. All rights reserved.
