CPICOOP.COM 3 CPI 2012 & BEYOND > By Bob Fifield It is hard to believe that the “New” CPI is now five years old. There have been many changes and much growth since 2007. We started out with locations in 26 South Central Nebraska towns with 400 plus employees. There are now 37 locations in Central Nebraska with over 600 employees. Sales in 2007 were $400 million. This past year a new milestone was set with over $1 billion in sales. Profitability has gone from under $4 million to $16 million per year. CPI, Cooperative Producers, Inc., believes strongly in the cooperative principles upon which the original company was founded on in 1906. CPI, in the true cooperative sense, is an extension of its owners’ farming and ranching operations. We are here to serve the needs of our owners with excellent facilities and well trained employees. The profit CPI earns is returned to its patrons in the form of patronage, is used to settle estates and retirements of its members, and to continually improve and replace its assets. The growth in CPI has come about and will continue in the future in four ways. The first is internal growth because of improvements in facilities and service. The second is the merging of other cooperatives into CPI. The growth through the acquisition of other businesses is the third. The last way is growth through investments in LLCs. All growth opportunities are presented to the CPI Board of Directors for their approval. Each opportunity must show a good financial payback and must fulfill the CPI purpose. As your farming operations grow and change, you have put more demands on CPI facilities. We need speed and space in all divisions to continue to service your needs. We have continued to make improvements. There is a limit on the amount we can reinvest every year. This is based on our profitability and, ultimately, the strength of the balance sheet. The costs of improvements continually escalate. CPI has been reinvesting over $15 million per year in its operations. CPI was formed by mergers. We have welcomed the opportunity to bring other cooperatives into CPI. This past year we merged Farmers’ Cooperative Grain Company of Merna and Logan County Coop into CPI. These were very successful cooperatives and have meshed nicely with the rest of our operations. When mergers are done correctly and for the right reason, it is good for all patrons. On July 1st we acquired Ted’s OK Tire of Sutton. It was a very well-run successful family business that fit our needs of Mr. Tire in the Eastern Region. We have also added Archer Oil into our energy group. Both of these filled voids in that department. We will continue to look at these types of opportunities in the future in all divisions. The BOD has continued to approve investments in LLCs. In 2008 we started Red Cloud Grain with Lansing Trade Group. It has been very successful, and in 2012 we changed the name to CPI-Lansing, LLC, as we began construction of the new BNSF shuttle loader in Fairmont. Construction is progressing nicely, and we plan on a March 1st start up. Lansing Trade Group has grown into a tremendous partner. The energy division has been invested in APM for about 7 years. This jobber fuel business has seen very good growth and return on investment. This is a partnership with an OK coop, two Kansas coops, and one in Colorado. The sales dollars from the LLCs do not appear on our financial statements; however, the profits on investments are recorded on the financials, and they are listed on the balance sheet as investments. In order to better serve your needs we make constant investments in CPI’s most important asset, its people. CPI has a policy of providing outside training to all employees every year. There is ongoing specialized training for employees in all departments. Continually improving our employees’ knowledge pays dividends. As we have openings within the company, we are able to offer advancements to our work force because they are prepared to take on new challenges. Senior Management and the BOD have ongoing training and education to better prepare themselves and CPI for the future. CPI, meeting your needs in 2012 and beyond. Your company, your future-Right Now. Bob Fifield CEO, Cooperative Producers Inc. BY THE NUMBERS A Snapshot Inside > By Dan Olson 4 COOPERATIVE PRODUCERS INC. 2 MILLION + CPI-Lansing has added a second facility to its portfolio with a new shuttle loading facility just west of Fairmont, NE. This facility will be a combination of cement and steel totaling 2,100,000 bushels with a loop track and both 60,000 bushel receiving and loading capabilities. This project will be ready for operation March of 2013. CPILansing also has a shuttle loading facility in Red Cloud, NE which has been very successful for the companies the past few years. 37 LOCATIONS CPI has continued to grow this past year with mergers in the North West territory including Merna, Anselmo, Arnold, and Stapleton. This brings our total number of CPI locations to 37. As we grow we have added new application equipment, new dry and liquid fertilizer receiving and blending capabilities at Stapleton and Merna, tire trucks, fuel trucks, and high speed diesel pumps along with a new 24 ton cake trailer and added feed product lines for our cattle producers. At Arnold we constructed a new 525,000 bushel bunker and scale and look at continued expansion at that facility in the years to come. We feel we have some great growth potential in this NW region. $15,000,000 BACK CPI’s serious committment to speed and space shows again this year adding an additional 1,600,000 bushels of storage lifting the company over 80,000,000 bushels of capacity. Upgrades and improvements of grain, agronomy, energy, and feed facilities and equipment continue on a fast pace to better accomodate our valued producers. Adding up Capital Expenses, Repairs and Maintenance, Leases, and other Investments CPI put more than $15,000,000 back in your facilities in 2012. A strong commitment from our board of directors and the management team, along with our employee group definitely sets CPI apart in the ever-growing ag world. Basis Contract The basis is a price level in cents/bushel above or below the CBOT futures. Delivery date, quantity, and basis are established against a specified futures month in a contract. The final price is set by fixing the CBOT futures level during CBOT trading hours. Deferred Pricing This contract allows for movement of grain without establishing a price. Unlike storage, charges will vary with market conditions. It is important to note that title to the grain passes to the buyer upon delivery. This contract is also known as Price Later or No Price Established (NPE). Hedge to Arrive The CBOT futures price is set at the time the contract is made, and the basis is established at a later date. This contract allows the ability to take advantage of high futures market and possible basis improvement later. Basis must be established prior to first notice day of the futures month. Deferred Payment Contract allows the customer to take income in the tax year that best fits financial requirements and cash flow needs. This agreement corresponds with other contracts and sets the date and amount of payment. Title to the grain passes to the buyer at the time of delivery. (NAPS)—Those who paid attention during basic chemistry classes may recall that phosphorus is one of three essential elements for plant life. Without phosphorus, farming and food production would be impossible. For this reason, some say that phosphorus is just as important as oil in the industrial world. However, while issues involving petroleum are front-page news, phosphorus rarely garners any attention at all. That is, unless you work in agriculture. The truth is that phosphate rock is a limited resource and supplies are under siege. Dr. Larry Sanders, president and CEO of SFP, warns that phosphate is finite in nature, and supplies are threatened by geopolitical situations which is compounded by the fact that phosphorus, when applied as a fertilizer, loses as much as 75 to 95 percent of its value due to “lock-up” in the soil. He says the fixation of phosphorus in the soil makes much of the element unavailable for plant uptake. Fortunately, today there is AVAIL®. AVAIL® Phosphorus Fertilizer Enhancer is added to phosphorus fertilizer and allows a much higher percentage of the nutrient to be available for plant uptake. Increased uptake can improve plant health, facilitate a stronger root structure, and generate better crop growth. The results are higher-yield opportunities for any crop where AVAIL-treated phosphorus is applied. To learn more, visit www.sfp.com. I am sure many think about the next day’s business or perhaps the hassles at the airport. I find myself looking out the window at the pivot circles that surround the towns that consist of CPI’s trade territory. What an unavoidable reminder of the power of agriculture in Nebraska. The trip I was on ultimately resulted in CPI receiving the “Grand Summit Energy Award” from our primary energy supplier, CHS/Cenex. Returning from the trip with an award is a humbling experience. Many fellow cooperatives congratulated me as a representative of CPI, and I worked to express to them the hard work everyone at CPI put in to continue our record growth and success. Without our customers to purchase our goods and services, our front line employees to deliver best in class service, and our leadership to continue raising the bar, the energy group could not be what it is. Sitting in my little airplane seat with my tray table down I worked to create a simple document to express what CPI does every day for its energy employees and customers. It was many hours later that I saw the true nature of our business. We have customers that count on us every day to provide an array of goods. As varied as those goods are the needs remain the same. We must give the customer what they want, when they want it, and we must be pleasant and accommodating while doing it. On any given day last year we provided 3659 Snickers bars and 4782 cups of coffee. We installed 125 tires and repaired 98 flats while changing 54 cars’ oil. Without running out of diesel fuel at our bulk plants during the most severe irrigation season we have ever experienced we delivered 92,000 gallons per day while making sure that 1,100 gallons of oil were taken care of. Pizza? 320 slices per day. Espresso? 58 shots per day. Drivability car problems? 21 solved every day. 20 car washes per day. CPI is there for the customer because the customer is there. ESPRESSO MUSING Driving home from Omaha I stopped at one of our Amprides and walked over to get my usual Mountain Mudd double espresso dry macchiato. I was greeted by three employees and four customers. How pleasant it was to be back among casual acquaintances that treated me like a long held friend. 20 COOPERATIVE PRODUCERS INC. After the coffee was gone and the paperwork finished I headed out to visit Mr. Tire stores. Again, I ran head long into friendly customers and employees. Our new store in Sutton (formerly Ted’s OK Tires) was a frenetic place. The seven staff members were synchronized in a choreographed frenzy of paperwork, tires, and oil, yet all had a good word and friendly hello waiting for me. The new customers were likewise happy to be receiving service that is second to none. Strategic acquisitions like this allow CPI to provide even more critical services to our primary clientele. Rural Nebraska residents need to have first class facilities, and CPI is committed to finding the partners and businesses that we can join with. Existing stores are remodeled and updated as budget, time, and technology permit. Our gas stations have all undergone extensive behind the scenes technology upgrades that will allow us to take your credit card transactions seamlessly and with encrypted security. New pumps in Giltner, Ragan, Anselmo, and Minden compliment a commitment by CPI to make the CPI gas card available in or near every town where we do business. yet more lubricant companies make CPI a formidable force in AG lubricants, delivering over 300,000 gallons in Nebraska. Shortly before Major Oil came on board with CPI we entered into a distribution agreement with Archer Oil, a division of Growmark. CPI has been tasked with using our service and delivery to take this first quality Archer oil to the farmer dealers that redistribute them to the end user. It is a joy to have Archer as yet another point of pride for Mid-Nebraska Lubricants. Archer began as airplane oil back in the bi-plane days and has evolved into a brand known for free oil samples and unsurpassed quality. Regardless of the color or age of your equipment CPI can provide extended warranties, oil sampling, and advice on drain intervals using a variety of oils from a variety of manufacturers. PARTNERS DEVELOPING RELATIONSHIPS At my meeting a recurring topic of discussion was drought and its impact on agriculture. During the flight I saw the sun turn Lake McConaughy and the Platte River basin a beautiful golden color. A fitting indication of the value of water. This past year pushed CPI to new heights in volumes within the energy department. The three irrigation months of June, July, and August saw us deliver nearly 8.3 million gallons of premium diesel. We are now averaging over 1 million gallons a month through our gas pumps. The 25 gas stations we have are servicing a rural population of 16,500. In 11 cases they are the only fueling station available, and in 24 cases they are the only farmer owned fueling stations CUSTOMERS & EMPLOYEES AS PARTNERS Reflecting on the trip I realize the number of people that make CPI’s retail and energy successful. You can begin with the 94,000 customers at our Farmers Coop GW grocery store in Red Cloud or the 24,000 people who buy lunch at the Godfather’s Pizza. Maybe the 24 transport and tank wagon drivers are the key in addition to the 8 operations people in Juniata. It could even be the 63 tire employees that stretch from Wilcox to Sutton. Ultimately, it is the tens of thousands of individual customer-employee interactions that make CPI and the Energy group relevant to agriculture in Nebraska. The baseline impact agriculture has on the economy of Nebraska is reflected in the 120,000,000 million dollars of business the Energy group does that multiplies tenfold as it gets spent throughout the towns where you live. FUNK - WILCOX - AXTELL - TRUMBULL - GILTNER - SUTTON - STAPLETON - MINDEN SUPPLIERS BECOME PARTNERS Returning from the Sutton Mr. Tire to Hastings I see the Major Oil Sales sign on a repurposed munitions building. Beginning back in 1992 I formed a relationship with Major Oil Sales Hastings. Craig, the owner, came to the CPI Midas in Kearney to sell us specialty oils and supplies. That relationship continued as Craig began bringing automotive supply liquids to our Ampride stores. Now, twenty years later, Craig has brought his skills and customers to Mid-Nebraska Lubricants. The addition of another salesperson, another delivery truck, and supply agreements with available. Our Cenex brand gives us the opportunity to sell premium diesel at some locations, support a 2% rebate on Cabela’s branded Visa cards, and lock in supply during times of heavy demand. The relationship CPI shares with CHS/ Cenex is interdependent in many ways. Having a partner with two Midwestern refineries is key to maintaining fuel supply. CPI’s retail gas stations provide a constant measurable use of gallons from CHS’s two refineries. Being a partner that pulls constant gallons allows CPI to negotiate and demand increased levels of supply and storage from CHS/ Cenex. Past programs such as the railroad diesel fuel in Axtell have been replaced by Condo diesel storage programs in North Platte and Osceola, Nebraska. Our leased storage of 390,000 gallons gives CPI a three day inventory cushion during irrigation season. No other Midwestern refiner or supplier has storage programs to support CPI. 1-800-325-2379 ANSELMO - KENESAW - JUNIATA - WOOD RIVER HASTINGS - RED CLOUD - ARNOLD - LAWRENCE QUALITY SERVICE Premium diesel, gas, convenience stores, tires, tire trucks, diesel exhaust fluid, floor dry, groceries, coffee, pizza, propane, lubricants, grease, auto repairs, and customer service are ready for you. CPICOOP.COM 21 EMPLOYEES THE OF COOPERATIVE PRODUCERS INC. 6 Tricks of the Trade The important values and qualities we pride ourself on having in our employees > By Ron Ziggafoos CPI’s corporate purpose statement is “Growing Partnerships Through Agriculture While Delivering Value to our Owners and Communities.” In order for us to deliver on our purpose, we must have a system in place that focuses on “Employees Committed to Delivering Value.” We believe this is one of our core values that cannot be sacrificed. We must look at six major areas to do this properly. To start, hire qualified and engaged employees. We utilize modern screening technology to assist us in placing the right people in the right seats so as to make them more satisfied with their jobs. Satisfied employees are more productive, feel rewarded by their accomplishments, and provide superior customer service. Next, provide ongoing career development opportunities. One of our objectives is that every CPI employee will participate in a training program provided by an outside resource on at least an annual basis. With over 600 employees this is a daunting task. 22 COOPERATIVE PRODUCERS INC. However, we believe it’s critical for professional growth. In addition, we strive to promote from within, to respond to those employees that have aspirations of growth. Third, maintain a T.E.A.M. atmosphere. The culture we work towards is one where “Together Everyone Achieves More.” Fourth, providing S.O.T.A. equipment and tools. Our Board of Directors, staff, and employees are very proud of the commitment we make towards providing State-Of-The-Art equipment and facilities. We are very conscientious of the appearance and quality of our patrons’ assets as well as our fiduciary responsibility to be good stewards of the company’s resources. Number five on our list is maintain a competitive compensation package. To hire and retain the best employees we must be positioned competitively in the marketplace. Finally, encourage community involvement. Currently we have operations in 37 central Nebraska communities. These communities are where our employees work; where their children attend school; where they go to worship or otherwise participate in a variety of organizations. We encourage employees to get involved. The only true, differentiating characteristic any one company has over its competitors is its employees. By focusing on our corporate purpose and our core values, we are fortunate to have the best employees in the industry.
