Ulbrich Chairman/President Mike Korologos Vice President Barbara Yamada “Five years and still going strong!” Secretary Michael R. Maughan Treasurer We are very much looking forward to celebrating our fifth birthday with you all on Saturday, July 14 here at Utah Olympic Park. It is hard to believe that five years have passed so quickly, and also amazing how much we have grown, thanks to folks such as yourselves. The history of the Alf Engen Ski Museum Foundation began in the late 1980s. Alan Engen had a vision to build a museum to honor the early pioneers of snow sports in the Intermountain Region. Jim Gaddis was thinking along the lines of a modest A-frame structure somewhere in the Park City area. One thing led to another, and over the next few years the scope of the project grew in terms of both complexity and financial commitment. 2 With substantial support from the Quinney and Eccles families, complemented by an outpouring of support from other foundations and individual donations, the Joe Quinney Winter Sports Center opened to the public in May 2002. The 29,000 square-foot facility houses the Alf Engen Ski Museum, 2002 Olympic Museum, café, retail shop, theater and conference room. Connie Nelson Executive Director Dr. A. Sackler, M.D. norwalk, ct Summer 2007 Greetings from the Executive Director By Connie Nelson Happy 5th-Year Anniversary to the Alf Engen Ski Museum and Joe Quinney Winter Sports Center! What a privilege it has been for me to be a part of this organization for the past five years! I feel very fortunate to work with such a professional and supportive Board of Trustees. I have had the honor of meeting some amazing ski innovators, historians and athletes, and am continually in awe of what folks have achieved in all areas of snow sports here in the Intermountain West. Our Education Program has educated and enticed over 1,600 parents, students and teachers from 25 different schools this school year. Our docents have taken ownership of the program and it runs flawlessly, thanks to their watchful eyes. With a generous grant from the Marriner S. Eccles Foundation, we have upgraded our DVD production for the Silver Ore to White Gold station. Thanks also to the Summit County RAP tax folks and Wells Fargo Bank for their donations, which have enabled the schools to visit the Museum, tour the Park and receive goodie bags free of charge. We are thrilled to report that our membership base has increased 31% since its inception in 2004. Thank you Museum members! Your donations help us maintain and expand our wonderful Museum! Our latest project is revitalizing the entrance to our Museum. Our Exhibit Committee’s goal is to make the entrance more inviting, thus ‘drawing’ the visitor down the hall into the Museum. Libby Hyland and crew will be working on this exciting project, anticipating completion in time for our 2007 Intermountain Ski Hall of Fame induction in September. Many thanks to the Office of Museum Services for making this project possible. We are in the process of changing our membership benefits as explained on the enclosed envelope. As of May 19, 2007, entrance to the Utah Olympic Park is FREE. This means there is no charge for visitors to see athletes training or to tour the Alf Engen Ski Museum and Eccles 2002 Olympic Winter Games Museum. Our promotional marketing budget got a boost thanks to the 1% Restaurant Tax Grant. Thank you Summit County! Looking forward to seeing everyone at our Family Fun Day on Saturday, July 14th from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. We are able to host this celebration thanks to the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation and the Park City Chamber Bureau. Thank you! Foundation News Meet a new employee Jane Hamilton A warm welcome to Jane Hamilton, who has joined our team as Connie Nelson’s Administrative Assistant. Born, raised and educated in the United Kingdom, Jane has lived in Park City for ten years with her husband, Steve. She is excited to be part of such an important local organization and looks forward to making a valuable contribution to the running of the Foundation. The 2007 Class Woody Anderson Ted Johnson Pete Karns Paul McCollister - deceased K Smith – deceased Margo Walters McDonald Summer 2007 Skiing News A Tribute to Two Wasatch Mountain Snow Safety Personalities – Ed and Dolores LaChapelle By Alan K. Engen When two people who have closely shared a lifetime of experiences pass away within a matter of days, not only is it a loss, but it presents a unique situation. It happened in 1997 when close friends and “gentle giants of the ski world,” Chic Morton and Alf Engen, passed away within five days of each other. In early 2007, ski snow experts and pioneers Dolores and Ed LaChapelle died independently, but again within a few days of each other…Dolores of a massive stroke and Ed of a heart attack. Dolores LaChapelle passed away on January 21, 2007. During her lifetime, she distinguished herself in a number of ways…namely as a member of the Forest Service’s avalanche and snow research team, an outstanding powder skier, and as “one of the West’s most prolific ecological writers.” In the early 1950s, she married Ed LaChapelle and they moved to Utah…making Alta their winter home for the next two decades. Dolores achieved many “firsts” in her lifetime including making the first ski ascents of Mt. Columbia, the second highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, and the Snowdome, the hydrographic apex of the continent. In addition, she was one of the first to ski Alta’s famous Baldy Chute in the early 1950s. Dolores LaChapelle authored a number of books focusing on the mountains and ecology. Among her more celebrated writings are two books titled, Deep Powder Snow: 40 Years of Ecstatic Skiing, Avalanches, and Earth Wisdom; and Rapture of the Deep: Concerning Deep Ecology and Celebrating Life. In recognition of her many lifetime accomplishments, the University of Utah J. Willard Marriott Library Ski Archives honored her with a prestigious Utah “History Maker” award in 2004. Alf Engen Ski Museum Foundation Perhaps no person is more celebrated in the history of snow safety than Dolores’s former husband, Ed LaChapelle. Ed died at the age of 80 on February 1, 2007, following a ski outing at Monarch Mountain in Silverton, Colorado. After doing what he loved best, skiing early morning fresh powder snow, he complained of chest pains, lay down to rest, and within a few hours left this world in search of new powder. Ed LaChapelle leaves a legacy which will be remembered for years to come. He began his avalanche research profession in the early 1950s, after being a participant in the Swiss Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research in Davos, Switzerland. Another Alta ski pioneer, the late Montgomery “Monty” Atwater, also attended the same prestigious institution, where he met and encouraged Ed to come to Alta to further his snow safety studies. Ed went to work for the U.S. Forest Service and became Alta’s Snow Ranger in the mid 1950s after Atwater took another position in California. For the next two decades, Alta had the benefit of having one of the nation’s finest snow safety experts. Ed’s overall knowledge regarding avalanche control provided him with national and international acclaim. He wrote one of the first U.S. Forest Service handbooks on snow safety, titled The ABC’s of Avalanche Safety for winter sports professionals and backcountry travelers. That writing is still regarded as a must-read for anyone going into the high country for winter activities. While both of these individuals will be sorely missed, Ed LaChapelle left a lasting message to all skiers when he said, “Use your head in deep snow but don’t stay out of it…it’s the greatest thrill in skiing.” 7 Alf Engen Ski Museum Foundation www.engenmuseum.org 2990 Bear Hollow Drive P.O.
