A FOCUS ON
MEMBER SERVICES
The refurbishment of the
restaurant at Lanyon is complete
and we welcome Jacob and his
team to Red Rock Bistro.
Red Rock delivers modern Australian fare at great
prices, complemented by the addition of a Children’s
area directly off the Restaurant. Works at Erindale
and Chisholm continue and I thank Members for their
patience during this time. Improvements to roll out
throughout April include re-carpeting, re-decorating
and re-furnishing.
We have teamed with our quality beverage suppliers
in bringing two special events to Vikings – the
Robert Oatley Wine Dinner and the Matilda Bay
Beer Dinner. I encourage Members to book early for
these nights as we continue to strive to provide different
experiences to suit our broad membership base.
Due to The Vikings Group commitment to our
community, nearly 8,000 athletes (mostly represented
by our affiliated teams) competed in the past year.
The achievements of these teams and individuals
from our affiliated clubs were recently recognised
at the 2011 Vikings Sports Awards – we congratulate
them on their efforts.
Lastly, Australians recognise 25 April as an occasion
of national commemoration. Services are held at dawn
– the time of the original landing – across the nation.
The culture and tradition of Anzac Day will continue with
Two-up scheduled at The Auditorium, Vikings Erindale.

APRIL 2012
Changing
How We Play
The rejuvenation of Vikings Erindale, Chisholm and Lanyon has
commenced. The following is an update of the current works in progress:
CHISHOLM
ERINDALE
LANYON
Tiling throughout the club
has been finalised and what
a difference it makes! Distinct
pathways have been created
throughout the venue and the
designated outdoor smoking
area located adjacent to the
Sports Bar has been tiled.
The second stage of the
refurbishments is focusing on
painting which is due to be
completed by the 2nd week of
April. New carpet, lighting and
furnishings are on their way
with the works at Chisholm
due to be completed by end
of April 2012.
The first stage of the
Gaming Lounge upgrade
focusing on ceiling works is
nearly complete, and tiling
throughout the venue has
commenced. Re-carpeting,
upgraded screening and new
lighting is expected to be
installed late April. Proposed
works in the foyer and Café
are also due to commence at
this time along with the arrival
of new furnishings. The entire
project is due for completion
by mid May 2012.
The Gaming installation has
been relocated to the far end
of the club, opening up the
lounge area for Members.
The Restaurant which was
closed during most of March
for refurbishments has reopened with a distinct new
character. The inclusion of
a children’s area, equipped
with the latest games and
a movie screening area, is
an exciting and welcome
addition to Lanyon.

WINE OF THE MONTH
DE BORTOLI WINES
WILLOWGLEN
Willowglen is produced exclusively for
restaurants and cafes so the wines in this
range are designed to complement good food.
The label evokes the idea of leisurely wining
and dining in the great Australian outdoors.
Willowglen Cabernet Merlot
The lead up to the 2009 harvest in the Riverina
was one of the best on record, with refreshing
rains during spring and mild December
temperatures. This lead to fruit with flavour
intensity and acid structure not seen for a few
years. This all changed at the end of January
with an unprecedented heat wave of plus
40 degrees for 14 days which saw ripening
stall for 3 weeks. Overall the vintage was
good to excellent. Willowglen Cabernet Merlot
offers sweet fragrant aromas of blackberries
with underlying mint and hints of milk
chocolate oak. A generous wine that shows
sweet and vibrant fruit on the fleshy palate
with soft mouth-coating tannins.
Willowglen Semillon Sauvignon
Blanc
2011 was a very difficult vintage with some
of the largest rainfalls recorded in a growing
season. However, the summer ripening period
was cooler because of this rainfall. This led to
long ripening periods and great flavour and
acid balance, rarely seen in the Riverina region.
$5.10 per glass | $17.50 per bottle
To accompany the clean citrus aromas with
herbaceous hints is the zesty palate upfront
of lime and lemon, which rounds slightly for
passionfruit and gooseberry notes on the
lengthy finish.
CIDER OF THE MONTH
MALTILDA BAY DIRTY GRANNY CIDER
Dirty Granny Matured Apple Cider is the new Apple Cider
from Matilda Bay! Classic and craft in style, Dirty Granny has
a rich and full flavour which combines a good balance of
sweetness and acidity and the crisp, refreshing taste of 100%
Australian apples.

with their debut album,…ISH, selling half a million copies in Australia.
Following it’s reissue in September 2009, on iTunes, the album peaked at
#10. Featuring the hit singles “That’s When I Think Of You”, “If I Could”,
You’ll Never Know” and “Compulsory Hero”, ..ISH, remains one of the
highest selling debut albums ever by an Australian band. Now after a long
hiatus, the band are back together, due mainly to the unbelievably positive

SOUTHERN CANBERRA
GYMNASTICS CLUB
Fifteen of our senior gymnasts have recently
taken on the world in Hawaii competing at two
international competitions against 9 countries and
130 clubs, including 6 other Australian clubs and
also New Zealand.
Our level 6 team members were Katerina
Babajanov, Naomi Hirth, Tiana McHardie,
Emma Newton, Maddison Pearce and Hannah
Peryman. The Level 7 competition saw Celina
Bianchini, Georgia Evans, Teagan McKeague and
Laura Pasquetti step up a level to show off new
routines. Also, progressing up to Level 8, Alannah
Bourandanis, Bianca Collicutt, Jaidyn Metcalfe and
Melanie O’Mara were strong competitors as was
Bianka Rose at Level 9.
The first competition, hosted by Kokokahi
Gymnastics Club and held at Le Jardin Academy in
Honolulu was the “Aloha Gymfest”. Emma, Tiana
and Hannah placed 7th, 8th and 9th in the 11-13
yr Level 6’s while Katerina placed 1st, Maddison
2nd and Naomi 5th in the 14yrs. Georgia placed 3rd
and Celina 5th in Level 7, 13yrs with Teagan 2nd
and Laura 9th in the 14yrs. Melanie came 2nd in
Level 8 12yrs, Alannah 3rd in 13yrs, Jaidyn 1st and
Bianca 6th in 14yrs divisions and Bianka placed 1st
in the Level 9 group. All girls received medals and
unique trophies, a hand selected shell mounted on
a wooden base.
Vikings Club News
There was certainly time for rest and play in
between competitions, with the next few days
filled with outings like learning to surf at Waikiki
beach, Snorkelling at Hanauma Bay, hiking up
Diamond Head crater, shopping at Ala Moana
Shopping Centre and the Outlets, visiting Cultural
Centres and experiencing the traditional Hawaiian
food and dance at Germaine’s Luau. The girls also
enjoyed learning the lingo with greetings of “Aloha
and Mahalo”.
The next competition was “Gymnastics in Paradise”
hosted by Hawaiian Island Tumblers. The girls
performed extremely well again this time bringing
home more medals and a wooden carved Ku
Tiki, known as the God of Strength. Results were
commendable again with Emma 2nd, Hannah 4th
and Tiana 5th, Katerina 1st, Maddison 2nd and
Naomi 6th, Georgia 2nd and Celina 5th, Teagan 6th
and Laura 8th, Melanie 1st and Alannah 3rd, Jaidyn
2nd and Bianca 3rd, and Bianka 2nd.
The entire trip was an amazing experience for all
gymnasts, as well as coaches Valeriy Shuster,
Carlene Bourandanis and Nicole Alexander and
the chaperones and families who travelled to
support the team. The club anticipates travelling
in the future to more international competitions
with both their Men’s and Women’s teams.

Tuggeranong Vikings
Triathlon Club
Tuggeranong Vikings Triathlon Club (TVTC) was
established in 1997 as a swim squad by a small
group of families in the Tuggeranong Valley looking to
maintain some fitness, in a fun and social environment.
Since this time, with a switch in focus to triathlon, our
membership has steadily grown to now be in excess of
100 people of all ages, with the club continuing to pride
itself on its friendly and social atmosphere, while at the
same time offering both the serious and ‘not so serious’
athlete professional triathlon coaching services.
Novice Program
The Club offers a Novice Program in the latter half of
the year as an excellent way to get started in the sport
of Triathlon. It is perfect for everyone from complete
beginners, to those who are looking for a structured
and supported way of starting out (or returning to) the
sport of Triathlon. Participants are offered 10 weeks
of coaching and introduction to the four disciplines of
triathlon – swimming, cycling, running, and transition.
Participants are also assisted in preparing for the
Novice series of triathlon events this summer. We are
proud to state that we have a high number of novices
who stay on after the program and become valued
club members.
The success of our
club can be measured
by representation by
our members at club,
territory, Australian
and International
levels.
Our racing history
The success of our club can be measured by
representation by our members at club, territory,
Australian and International levels. Vikings have
successfully completed some amazing races
including the Ironman World Championships in Kona,
Hawaii, Australian Ironman, various Age Group World
Championships, Long Distance World Champs, Xterra
World Champs, Australian Schools Championship, Sri
Chinmoy Triple Tri (Solo), Canberra Marathon, MONT
24 Hour Mountain Bike race and the Deca Ironman.
Junior Program
The Club offers the only Junior Triathlon Participation
Program in the ACT. This program is run in conjunction
with Triathlon ACT (TACT) and is designed to introduce
kids to the sport of triathlon. The program currently
has over 30 children participating and commits three
coaches to skill development in swimming, riding,
running and transition. Training sessions are provided
from October to December (just before school ends
for the year). Over the past three years the program
has proven to be immensely successful with numbers
more than tripling over the last two years. As a result
of the success of the program the Club has now
been approached to work with local schools to assist
with running fundraising Duathlons. This is a great
opportunity to encourage further development of
our program and the sport whilst ensuring the local
community is supported. Many of our older participants
are now members of the elite squads that represent
Canberra at local and state competitions.

ROUNDS
Vikings Win Australian
Club Championship
The team arrived in Sunnybank all set for a pre
season fixture only to find out the game was a
little more important. It was confirmed during the
warm up that it would be for the Australian Club
Championship. So things got a little more serious
but the Vikings were still confident, as they had
put in a good pre season. The game kicked off in
some sweltering Queensland heat, with the Vikings
showing early on that they weren’t here to make up
the numbers. From the start the red men dominated
their opposition pack in all aspects of the game.
The first points came from former Sunnybank player
Tom Murday. He muscled his way over in the corner
after some good build up play from the pack.
Rodney Iona stood up and slotted the touchline
conversion and it was game on. The next try came
from an excellent counter-attacking piece of play,
which involved the whole team and was finished off
by captain Beau Mokotupu. After some sloppy play
Sunnybank got the next score through an intercept.
This slowed down the good momentum the Vikings
had been building. But it didn’t take long for the
Canberra boys to get themselves back into the
opposition territory and get the 3rd try. JP Mynhardt
finished off a nice piece of play from an attacking
lineout in the far corner after some delicate hands
from James Turner. This spurred on Sunnybank to
pick it up they got into their impressive offloading
game and after some good play scored a try in the
corner. Penalties were exchanged and the score
was 20-13. With the introduction of Brumbies
prop Scott Sio the Vikings pack became even
more impressive at set piece time. After gaining
good territory again and some strong carries
by the pack, Scott barged over for a try to
make it 27-13 after Rodney added the extras.
Vikings Club News
A brief lapse in concentration led to Sunnybank
slipping in for a cheap score on the half time whistle
to make it 27-20 at the break.
But the Vikings weren’t going to let this slip away.
After the break a turnover from a scrum and 2 big
passes to the far touchline gave Vikings a break,
which resulted in a try from fullback Brenden
Taueki. This saw the introduction of some of our
young guns Colts back rower Kerry Mcinerney who
got stuck in from the start and 17 year old Andrew
Robinson. Robbo was only on the field when a
quick lineout saw him bullet off and show no fear as
he ran at the defenders beating them for fun. Still in
school the young back showed he has a very bright
future. With momentum back on their side Vikings
went hunting for their next score. A turn over deep
in their own half saw big prop JP Pradaud break
and off load to winger Darragh Fanning who broke
down his touchline and took on the full back to
send Paula Kaho racing under the posts to add
a 7 pointer. With the bench emptied and the heat
not dying the game got a little scrappy towards
the end and Sunnybank got in for 2 late tries.
But the final say of the day came from the Vikings.
Another 17 year old making his debut was fly half
Willoughby Axelsen getting a great turnover on the
Sunnybank line, which David Pocock would have
been proud of. The ball was sent out to big Mikey
Noble with a clear 1m run to the line he made some
seriously hard work of dotting down the ball.
Final Score 47-32 and the Vikings won the
Australian Club Championship for the first time.

Vikings Charity Day
After the great success of last year’s charity day
the Vikings are proud to announce it is back again.
This year we are hoping to be as successful as last year.
It again will be run in conjunction with The Cerebral
Palsy Alliance and Community CPS. Last year the
Vikings had great success in this event by raising over
$12,000 for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance. The day will
also double up as the clubs Sponsors / Ladies day,
so all ladies and sponsors are invited to be guests of
the club and enjoy the rugby with refreshments and
the after match entertainment. Last year was a very
enjoyable affair with the highlight of the evening the
jersey auction. Again the 1st Grade side will be wearing
a specially designed jersey for this event and they
will be auctioned off afterwards. The day will kick off
early for the rugby and will continue onto VP3 after the
rugby action is over. Please come along and support
this great event, which is for a great cause and is a
fun day out. Our aim is to top last years amount raised
so try support where possible. Keep an eye on the
rugby club website for updates in the run up to the
day at www.vikingsrugby.com.au.
