Mental Health Awareness Week May 4-10, 2015
Our collective voice and collective action can make a difference! We want to support the mental health of our
children by showing that we care. We want every child to have a sense of belonging with friends, families,
schools and communities. Mental Health Awareness Week is a week to connect with kids and let them know
that their mental health is important and we are there for them.
Just like physical health, everyone has mental health. Good Mental health is not merely the absence of mental
health problems. People who are mentally healthy build and maintain healthy relationships, they are resilient
and can easily adapt to change, they have balance in their lives and better self-confidence. Emotionally healthy
children are more likely to be successful in school and in life.
Mental Health Awareness Week Events:
May 4 – Family Games Night
HUB and Addictions Prevention Coalition are sponsoring a Family Games Night at the Drill Hall in Wetaskiwin
from 6:00-8:00 pm. This is a fun filled evening, free of charge. Community Services and organizations will be
hosting game tables to break barriers that may exist and create awareness for what the community has to
offer.
If you are unable to make it into the Drill Hall, families are encouraged to have a Family Games Night at home.
Dust off the old board games, turn off the TV and enjoy some family fun and connection.
May 5 – “Let’s Chalk About It”
Students will be encouraged to create positive messages and art on the sidewalks of our school. We
challenge community members and businesses to spread the positivity through art on their properties as well.
May 6 – Hats on For Mental Health
For a small donation, students are allowed to wear their hats in school in support of Mental Health. Donations
will be given to the District’s HUB program that supports our schools by providing positive health and wellness
programs.
May 7- Kindness Wall
Look for our Kindness wall in our main hallway. Positive messages will be posted on “Post – it” notes. Students
can take the message they need and leave behind words of kindness for others.
May 8- “Disconnect to Connect”
Disconnect from electronics and connect with each other. We encourage families to turn off all electronics - cell
phones, gaming systems, TV’s etc and connect with each other to build positive relationships in your life, family,
school and community. Watch for activities that may be taking place or create then yourself or even just plan a
social activity with your friends or family!
Eye See Eye Learn - an Eye Health & Vision Awareness Program
Attention parents of this year’s kindergarten graduates! Kindergarten students
who need eyeglasses have until the end of the school year to get their free pair
through the Eye See Eye Learn program. All you have to do is go to your local
Doctor of Optometry for a comprehensive eye exam, which is covered by
Alberta Health Care. If the child (kindergarten students only) needs glasses,
they will get a free pair!
In Alberta, 25% of children begin Grade One with an undiagnosed vision or
eye health problem, which can interfere with their ability to learn during their
first critical years in school. The Eye See Eye Learn program was developed
by the Alberta Association of Optometrists to help children reach their full potential. Through Eye
See Eye Learn, Doctors of Optometry detect, diagnose & treat eye health problems in children as they
enter the school system. Alberta Health Care already covers the cost of comprehensive eye exams for
all children in the province. This program takes that one step further by providing free eyeglasses to
kindergarten students who need a prescription.
Visit the Eye See Eye Learn Alberta website or call the Alberta Association of Optometrists
at 1-800-272-8843 for more information.
