Illustration by John Pils the M aple Leaf City of Maplewood, Missouri www.cityofmaplewood.com January / February 2012 Mayor White’s Message: F or years I have been talking and writing about what a wonderful place Maplewood is to live, shop, work and play. Maplewood is great because of its churches, schools, businesses, social organizations and the most important factor is its people. Putting this message in the newsletter is like preaching to the choir. We all know how great Maplewood is and that is M ayor why you have chosen to live here. Well the secret is getting Ja mes Wh i te out. In a recent article the Saint Louis Beacon featured two Maplewood residents, one with a young family who grew up in Maplewood. The second family with no children shared why they chose to live in Maplewood. The mother of the family with children commented that she couldn’t wait to leave Maplewood as a young adult. She and her husband did just that. After 13 years they decided to raise their family in Maplewood. She indicated the importance of community, schools and the ability to walk for shopping, dining and to play in the many neighborhood parks. The second family chose to live here because of Maplewood’s location and the affordability of a home. They have come to enjoy the resurgence of the city with all its businesses and the many fine restaurants in which to eat. They also indicated that the ability to walk anywhere in the city was important to them. So the secret is out, but it was no secret to the many people who have made Maplewood their home for years. Sincerely, Mayor James White Fiddlin’ Around in the New Year The Folk School of St. Louis just celebrated its 10th Anniversary! We are very lucky to have this group in Maplewood. Every effort will be made to plant a tree in the tree lawn; however, it may be necessary to plant the requested tree at a nearby location. Maplewood Pet Licenses The City of Maplewood’s 2012 pet licenses are now on sale at Maplewood City Hall. The fee for a pet license is five dollars ($5.00) for each dog or cat. Proof of rabies inoculation is required at time of purchase. All dogs and cats residing in the City of Maplewood are required to have an annual pet license. Dog Park Memberships Memberships to the Maplewood Dog Park are on sale at Maplewood City Hall. The Maplewood Dog Park is located in Kellogg Park. Use of the dog park is by membership only. Dogs owned by Maplewood residents are charged a membership fee of twenty dollars ($20) for the first dog and five dollars ($5) for the second dog per calendar year. Proof of vaccinations and a photo of the dog (digital photos are preferred) are required during registration. Please submit digital photos to g-komero@cityofmaplewood. com. Snow Removal If possible, during and for 24 hours after snowfalls, please do not park your vehicle on the street. This will allow the Public Works Department to plow and spread salt closer to the curb. Also, note the Public Works Department does not widen plowing paths or clear driveways after snowfalls. Fewer vehicles parked on the street means speedier snow removal operations. Your cooperation is appreciated. Beet Juice The City will be evaluating the use of beet juice as a deicing agent. The combination of beet juice and salt works more effectively in lower temperatures than salt alone. Additionally, studies have shown that beet juice is less corrosive and less harmful to the environment and if used properly, it can be a more cost effective option. The following streets are in the test area: the 2000 block of Laclede Station Road, the 7700 block of Folk Avenue, the 2100 block of Bredell Avenue, Williams Court and Alicia Court. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please contact the public works department at 314-645-3600. Christmas Tree Removal Christmas trees placed out for removal will need to have a yard waste tag on them. They will not be picked up without a tag. Yard waste tags can be purchased at a cost of $1.80 per tag. Yard waste tags are available at City Hall, the Public Library and Scheidt True Value Hardware. Additionally, yard waste bags are available at a cost of $2.25 per bag. Page 5 Recycling Becomes Maplewood! January / February 2012 the Maple Leaf Page 7 Fire Exposing an Invisible Killer: The Dangers of Carbon Monoxide T he Maplewood Fire Department would like you to know that there are simple steps you can take to protect yourself from deadly carbon monoxide fumes. Carbon monoxide poisoning claims more than 400 lives and sends another 20,000 people to the hospital annually. What is carbon monoxide? Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless and toxic gas. Because it is impossible to see, taste or smell the toxic fumes, CO can kill you before you are aware it is in your home. At lower levels of exposure, CO causes mild effects that are often mistaken for the flu. These symptoms include headaches, dizziness, disorientation, nausea and fatigue. The effects of CO exposure can vary greatly from person to person depending on age, overall health and the concentration and length of exposure. Where does carbon monoxide come from? CO gas can come from several sources: gas-fired appliances, charcoal grills, woodburning furnaces or fireplaces and motor vehicles. Who is at risk? Everyone is at risk. Medical experts believe that unborn babies, infants, children, senior citizens and people with heart or lung problems are at greater risk for CO poisoning. What should you do if your carbon monoxide alarm goes off? If no one is feeling ill: 1. Turn off all appliances and other sources of combustion. 2. Contact the fire department so that they can check your home for the possible presence of CO, but be sure to tell the dispatcher no one is ill. 3. Wait outside the home for the fire department to arrive and follow their instructions. If weather is unsuitable to wait outside, all occupants should wait at the front door. 4. Call a qualified service professional to further investigate the source of the CO alarm. If illness is a factor: 1. Evacuate all occupants immediately. 2. Determine how many occupants are ill and determine their symptoms. 3. Call 911 and when relaying informa- tion, include the number of people feeling ill. 4. Do not re-enter the home without the approval of a fire department representative. 5. Call a qualified professional to repair the source of the CO. How You can Protect Yourself and Your Family from CO Poisoning n I nstall at least one carbon monoxide alarm with an audible warning signal near the sleeping areas and outside individual bedrooms. Make sure the alarm has been evaluated by a nationally recognized laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL). Carbon monoxide alarms measure levels of CO over time and are designed to sound an alarm before an average, healthy adult would experience symptoms. It is very possible that you may not be experiencing symptoms when you hear the alarm. This does not mean that CO is not present. n H ave a qualified professional check all fuel burning appliances, furnaces, venting and chimney systems at least once a year. n N ever use your range or oven to help heat your home and never use a charcoal grill or hibachi in your home or garage. n N ever keep a car running in a garage. Even if the garage doors are open, normal circulation will not provide enough fresh air to prevent a dangerous buildup of CO. n When purchasing an existing home, have a qualified technician evaluate the integrity of the heating and cooking systems, as well as the sealed spaces between the garage and house. The presence of a carbon monoxide alarm in your home can save your life in the event of CO buildup.
